If you guys can't stop this constant bickering, you will force me to
actually measure and report the true latency. (I have the technology).
Any takers?

RE: [RCSE] JR/Specktrum 2.4 Stuff, Bet You Didn't Know This!

2008-04-24 Thread Hank Schorz
I own (and use) the 9303 in 72 mHz, 2.4 Add on Module, and 2.4 Integrated. The
only real difference between the 2.4 Module and Integrated that matters is the
model memory. I may be a knucklehead (and I have the 72 and 2.4 Integrated on
slightly different models, one on a Pike Perfect, and one on a Pike Perfect
Light), but I don't notice any difference in response or in latency. I suspect
that if I could A/B quickly back and forth between the two radios on the same
plane, that I might notice a difference. Where this feature will pay off is on
helicopters and/or 3D type electrics.

Gordy,

I guess what all this means is that the TX trnansmits your screw-ups
faster to the plane?

Gee, now everyone will see the plane swerve faster left and right as it
approaches the spot.

I'm glad I got the new 9303.

I have owned an XPS conversion for my 9303 for some time and used it at the
SWC in my Woody, the same carbon fuse challenges apply to their system but
 not
much has been done by sailplaners to solve the install to make it work

I'm new to the JR Spektrum systems so spending more time and thought on it
right nowand like the rest of us, I've been nagging the experts with
questions, so to minimize FAQ's I'll keep sharing what I find out.:-)

 I asked if there was a difference between a dedicated 2.4 9303 and a 9303
with a Spektrum 2.4 module, cuz you knowlike all sailplaners I'm cheap!
 :-)

I had heard some thing on the fields about one being faster or some such
so didn't pay much attention, but there really is a reason to get the
 dedicated 2.4 TX.

 Take a look,
Integrated 2.4 has 2048 resolution and lower latency (faster response time)
then the module system which reads the PPM data stream coming off the pins
into the module. With the module the speed and feeling is the same as a PCM
 system.

Also the integrated X9303 gives you Model Match (model is linked to the
model number in the tx so if you're not on the correct model it don't work)
 and
Servo Sync (data stream is changed so servos on the same surface receive
 data
at the same time: most noticeable on heli collective and elevators on GS
 models).
 So there you go! :-)

[RCSE] Contest Format

2008-01-10 Thread Hank Schorz
This topic always brings a chuckle to me.

Larry's idea is the only one (other than rolling dice or cutting cards)
that gives everyone an even chance to win with no regard for their
skills or equipment. If that's what you're looking for, that's the way
to go. But who's looking for that?

I've been to contests for over 20 years, and the best pilots, with the
best skills and equipment usually win, as they should. What would be the
point of anything else? Does winning a contest by luck make anyone feel
any better? I doubt it. The real benefit of contest flying (to me) is
the comradery, the sport, the challenge, and the competition (the thrill
of victory and the agony of defeat). I would never throw that away for a
win of a luck driven contest. The pilots that are better than I (and
there are many), challenge me and push me to fly better. I wouldn't have
it any other way!

Yes, some folks have had some initial difficulties setting up their own
transmitters as compared to buying it with the dedicated transmitter.

But the product support has been terrific so far, and people are loving
it once they get the Tx set up and calibrated, etc.

See my thread at:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=581117
and the new FAQ at: http://www.inertiasoft.com/fsonefaq/

All new products have some problems when exposed to people and
especially to computers in all their various setups. Adding the ability
to hook up many different transmitters, including computer transmitters,
adds a whole nother dimension to the challenge. My DX6 Tx is working
just fine with FSOne.

JR transmitters are positive shift. This is not the transmitter module,
but it is in the encoder before the module. You can actually modify the
JR transmitters by adding a phase shifter. I have done this for my

Originally I was using DS5125's and had so many problems, they reside in

[RCSE] Inexpensive Power towing

2005-12-27 Thread Hank Schorz

Scott Marnoch and I have been doing some towing with the
Multiplex Magister and Easy Glider combination. It is a blast. We have two
Magisters powered with AXI 2826/08 with a three bladed 11 x 7 prop and two
3-cell lipo 2200 maH battery packs. It is a real blast.

Scott made tow cables approx 60 long, and with the
large tricycle gear on the Magister it is easy to get the two up off the
ground. With a Castle Creations Speed Controller, you can program the power
down to about 300 Watts which is more than enough and keeps up the flight time.

You can tow the easy glider quite high and it flys real well,
not at all like a foam sailplane. It is lightly loaded (less than 6 oz/ft sq).
We modified the glider by building a simple releasable tow hook on it. The
Magister has a built in tow release so you can release from either end (glider
or tow plane). That came in handy on the second attempt when Scott (flying tow)
and I (fling the glider) both realized at the same instant that we had a
problem and release both ends simultaneously. That left the tow line free
falling and both planes ok.

I know that Scott has some pictures of the flying, and I
have a couple of the mods that Scott came up with to the Easy Glider for the
tow hook if anyone is interested.

The Magister is about $110 and the Easy Glider $90 or so.
The Magister comes with a stock 680 motor. I tried that first, but its a
little power short.

RE: [RCSE] RES Question

2005-07-26 Thread Hank Schorz
I have two Topaz's and love them both. One has the original airfoil, and
one has an airfoil just like the AVA (more camber and thus a bit slower
with less penetration). I prefer the original airfoil (better
penetration).

The Topaz is extremely strong and durable.

The new Topaz also has a smaller spoiler. I prefer the original wide
spoiler. I fly my Topaz with a Futaba Gyro in the mid section just below

Anyone flown more than one of these? How do they compare? Why do you

RE: [RCSE] Can I. . .with the 9303??

2005-04-20 Thread Hank Schorz
The best switch setup is to slightly moddify the radio and move the Elevator
dual rate switch to the right front panel (where the thermal/cruise/speed
switch is located), move the launch/cruise/land switch one place to the
left( where the elev d/r switch was) and rotate it 180 degrees, and move the
thermal/cruise/speed switchh (that you took out in the first step) over to
the remaining hole to (the right of the launch/cruise/land switch). This
will let you operate all of the flight modes with your left thumb. There are
instructions (in pdf format) with many pictures on how to do this at
www.rcsoaring.com under documents and tips - JR9303 Sailplane Switch
Modifications. It taks around 45 minutes, a small soldering iron, and a 6
piece of hookup wire to do the modification.

Guys. . .excuse my simple inquiry, but with all the frustrations I had with
the 8103, I'm reluctant to take the plunge on the 9303. Nevertheless, I must

do something pronto about a brand new Tx and have no time to read extensive
manuals and fuss with elaborate programming.

Would those of you who have the 9303 that has ailerons and elevator on the
right stick and throttle and rudder on the left, please tell me this:

Will it be a simple programming matter to operate the two flaps to full down

on the throttle stick and have elevator compensation? Will the throttle trim

tab then effect both flaps? Can I bypass flipping any switches?

Is it simple to get rudder mixed in with ailerons? Is it easy to program for

Dual Rates on elevator and ailerons?

What kind of running time are you getting on the standard battery pack?

That's all I need to fly the Genie, the LT/S or the Genie Pro. The other
things can come later. I have no time now to deal with them.

Would it be a simple and sure programming procedure to do those things???
Also, does the radio allow independent programming for throw and neutrals of

each aileron.of each aileron?

 (1) use the throttle stick to move both flaps to the full down

For the past two weekends in a row a rather informal group of fliers has
gathered at a local field in Durham, CT. Last weekend we had 8 fliers, this
weekend about 7 (some different faces). This is quite a resurgence in
activity from three years ago when I started and I was lucky to find 2 other
guys at the field on any day.

The favorite flying around here is handlaunch, either discus or zip start.
1/2 of the guys have the high buck types (e.g. Taboo) with the other half
having either built up Gamblers or homemade ships.

This is quite a resurgence in unpowered flight. While there is an esailplane
club nearby, for several years anyone in the local area wanting to fly
without motors with more than one or two other guys, such as at a contest,
would have to travel to Long Island, NY, up to the Charles River club in
Massachusetts, or Maine. While there are no plans for any contests locally,
and we will still travel to those locations to get our LSF vouchers points,
it is quite nice to see so many thermal/sink indicators in the sky at once.
It makes flying so much easier!

So how is sailplane flying attendance in your neck of the woods?

p.s. The glow fliers were outnumbered for these two weekends in a row. We
even had interest from several of the free flight guys wanting to dust off
their '76 polyhedrals, put in new radio gear and come flying again. Sweet!

[RCSE] 9303 Sailplane Modification

2005-02-24 Thread Hank Schorz

After using it for around 3 months in the conventional way
(way it was intended to be used), I modified my JR 9303. This was also prompted
by the way Joe has set up his 9303. He programmed the Elev D/R switch on the
far left to be launch mode on/off (toward you or down is on), and he
programmed the Land/Cruise/Launch switch to be Thermal/Cruise/Speed. I think he
also had to change the wiring on one of the switches, or turn it around. This
allows all of the various modes to be accessed with your left thumb so that you
can keep your right hand on the stick where it belongs.

My solution was slightly different, and required a tiny bit
of easy rewiring and relocation which is very easy on this radio. The total
modification took around 45 minutes including figuring out what to do.

The result is that my far left switch is Launch/Cruise/Land
switch moved over one position to the left and rotated 180 degrees so that
Launch mode is toward you (down) and Landing Mode is full up or away. The three
position switch from the right (Thermal/Cruise/Speed) is then relocated where
the left three position switch was located (requires one longer wire). The Elev
D/R switch that was on the far left is now where the Thermal/Cruise/Speed
switch was located next to the Ail D/R switch.

The radio front panel switches are now located as follows
(from left to right):

Land Speed Flap Trim Aux
Trim Elev D/R Aile D/R

Cruise Cruise

Launch Thermal

I will be modifying another for a friend and I will take
some pictures of what to do. If anyone else is interested just email me direct
and I can send you the info on how to do it.

RE: [RCSE] nagging 9303 issue

2004-10-29 Thread Hank Schorz
I have programmed my 9303 to do all of what you need. There is no need to
have a landing switch that allows the throttle stick to provide
flaps/crow/elevator comp. I do reduce the diff with the landing switch, but
never have it turn the throttle stick on/off ... it's on all the time.

I flew with a Futaba 8U for several years and forgot to activate the
landing switch only few times but now I'm a happy owner of a 9303 and
decided to try something different.

What I'm doing is having the landing flaps and flap-elev mix always on
and assigned to the throtle stick. The right lever sets the amount of
launch camber using two linear mixes with the Aux 4 channel. The left
lever is used to camber changes during the flight. So right now I have
only one switch to change from launch to cruise (I'm using the top
right switch behind the trainer switch).
If I wanted to actually use a landing mode to change trims and expos
it still could be done but the way it is if I forget to flip the
landing switch most of the landing functions would still work.

I'm real close to buying a 9303, but have this one nagging concern I can't
seem to work around. I can deal with the different switch locations, etc.

Just as being different. No big deal. The 9303 has many super positive
features that I find very attractive.

First, let me say I've been heavily influenced by the Airtronics way of
doing things, as I have owned a Vision, and now a Stylus for several
years.
I program the radio specifically to reduce pilot workload. Less things
to
think of and less things to remember. This has lead me to use the
flight-mode switch to control almost all settings. The XP9303 also shares
this philosophy. Great! Just what I am looking for. Lots of free mixers
too. Seems almost trivial to setup a wing with 6 servos on the TE.

I have this one nagging issue about landing mode. I realize the 9303 can
have the FLAP - ELEV mixing in all flight modes, so there is no safety
 issue (ala 8103).

When I use crow for landing mode, I want several different mixes. Things
like reverse diff, aileron - rudder, etc. As you may know, with the
Vision
and Stylus, landing mode is automatically engaged when the flap stick
starts
to be pulled down. This overrides any other flight mode in place at the
time. Not so with the 9303.

With the 9303, the pilot must remember to pull the flight mode switch to
engage LAND mode. This is fine. But... when is a guy to pull that
landing
mode switch? If I pull landing mode at 1 or 2-minutes to go, then
handling
will quirky when I'm cruising around. If I forget to put it in landing
mode
at all, handling will suffer on final approach. Ideally, I think landing
mode should engage precisely when I start to pull the flap stick. Not
before, not later. There's that pesky Airtronics mentality. ;)

To me, this is a serious pilot work load issue, ideally rememberin to pull
the LAND switch just as I'm entering my final turn. I certainly do not
need one more thing to remember to do during the last 30 seconds of
flight.

So, JR experts... how am I supposed to do things with this radio? Is a
 lobotomy required? I'm ready.

 Thanks,

 Jon

[RCSE] Topaz

2004-01-26 Thread Hank Schorz

I finished my Topaz and flew it this past weekend. Very
impressive. Mine cam out at 36.2 oz and neede no nose weight. For skegs, I used
a Tim McCann V skeg on the rear, and I made a nose skeg from G10
for the nose (although a friend used a Tim McCann nose skeg for his and it
worked great). I hooked up the spoiler by putting an HS-85 below the wing on
the outside, with the linkage up through the precut hole. The HS-85 jus barely
fit, and an HS-81 might work better for this. I also removed the silicon hinge
and replaced it with tape and also removed the spoiler control arm, drilled a
new hole just over the rectangular precut hole, and replace the spoiler control
arm with one made from brass with a longer moment. I then used a standard klevise
with a very short z bend rod. One can get a full 90 degrees
(although not needed) of easy travel with plenty of servo push.

The Topaz flys very well and the wing looks a bit like the
old Mirage with plenty of dihedral. It turns well and behaves. IWe all launched
on a full 12 volt winch with no problems although pedaling. Good zoomies
presented no problems, and there was no flexing on the way up. All in all I
think its much like the highly touted AVA (I have one of these as well).
It was pretty breezy on Sunday, and the Topaz handled the wind just fine with
more penetration that you might expect for 36 ounces. Wing loading around 5.5
oz/sq ft.

Anyone have any pictures that might show contruction
techniques on the AVA?

[RCSE] JR8103

2000-01-17 Thread Hank Schorz

I've been using an 8103 for about two years. I love the radio, but only
after a slight modification. The standard way to get landing mode (crow) and
camber, is to use the left vertical stick and a switch. Very bad idea since
you have to remember to throw the switch when landing. I swapped that switch
(which was on the front panel) with the timer switch (on the top left rear -
where the launch/reflex should be), and replaced the timer switch with a
nice push button that can easily be reached with my thumb. Lastly, I added a
micro rotary switch to the left side near the top, and rerouted the wires
from the right top pot, and assigned this to camber.

It really seems natural to have those functions positioned that way (like
the vision), and it's a real simple modification.

I'd say that after that, the 8103 has more functionality that the Vision,
and somewhat less than the Stylus.

[RCSE] Visalia September Schedule

1999-09-07 Thread Hank Schorz

I normally go up to CVRC for their normal Spetember contest, and for the
Landing Cup Contest held on a different day. Does anyone know the dates and
times for these two contests?
