RE: [RCSE] Why are so many guys unsubscribing?
Very well said, Harley. I could not agree more. I too, have thought of unsubscribing lately for the exact same reason. I read the list to learn useful stuff, and all the banter is a waste of time for me too. Jack [Original Message] From: Harley Michaelis [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: soaring@airage.com Date: 7/27/05 6:14:13 PM Subject: [RCSE] Why are so many guys unsubscribing? I wonder if those who have been unsubscribing have lost interest by the lack of useful content of late. At times, lately, I've also thought of unsubscribing. I think what I appreciate least is banter between friends who for some reason, must think the rest of us are interested in what they are saying. So much of what has come in lately has been that sort of thing. To me, and perhaps to others, it's just a waste of time to see that mail has come in, wait for messages to display and then see it's a bunch of stuff that should have been kept personal between the correspondents. Innovative ideas, techniques, discoveries, etc. are great to learn about and most welcome. Give us more of that to again make the exchange more worthwhile. Re: [RCSE] Vacuum bags
I am using the bag tubes, clips, and nipples from ACP, also their pump system with the cut off switch. I pump 23 - 24 inches of mercury. The bag will not leak enough to turn the pump back on all night, or maybe once in the week hours of the morning. I am still on the same bag I started with after many uses. To make the hole for the nipple, I found a paper punch the right size, so the hole is round (no splits) and a tight fit. Jack Haprer -Original Message- From: Al Scidmore [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Apr 5, 2005 1:26 PM To: soaring@airage.com Subject: [RCSE] Vacuum bags Yesterday I decided to bag the latest version of my DLG. When I got the bag set up I found that it leaked...again. Seems like every time that I start to do some bagging I have to spend an inordinate amount of time to get a non-leaking bag. You know, the kind where you can leave the pump off after pulling the vacuum. Many of you guys (and dolls?) have been to this dance before, I am sure. So, I thought to ask for advice... what you do in this regard? How do you create a never-fail bag? What tricks work for you? I hope that this doesn't start a thread as contentious as the one on the new JR frequency synthesized transmitter modules did. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Thanks, Cal, but I have seen this. I use one of his new 6 volt motors in my Real Balls winch, and it is excellent. Still, there is no part number, or vehicle listed that it is used in. These must be available locally with the part number, so no shipping costs or wait involved. Does anybody know what vehicles these are used in or a part number? Thanks. Re: [RCSE] Glider Bag choices?
Separator/cushion is easy. Just cut up a 5$ sleeping bag pad from WallyMart, the light blue ones are good for this. I use these to get two three piece wings in a regular sailplane bag with all the parts separated and padded. Really helps the hangar rash. The snow board bags are great, and they are way more rugged than the sailplane bags. For travel to the field they work well. But, I would not ship in one of these, because your sailplane will not take near the abuse that a snow board will, and the baggage guys have been known to break/damage snow boards. They may think your ship is a snow board - and handle it that way. Here's an interesting alternative if you just need to store the wings... These bags, some of which are padded, are for snowboards (single compartment) so you'd have to come up with your own wing panel seperator/cushion but that shouldn't be difficult (foam, bubble wrap, etc.) Some are 165 cm (64) and others are 180 cm (70). The price is definitely right! http://www.sportmart.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=701026 Just a idea. Dave RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] September/October thread -- interference
I frequently run into park flyers at the high school where I sometimes fly my DLG. They are mostly family types where Dad is trying to get the plane into the air by throwing it straight up. They are usually more than happy to get some help after seeing me throw DLG a few times. I have helped several of them get their planes into the air, and always take the time to explain about interference. They usually have no clue about that. So far, this has produced several new glider pilots and some new club members. In fact, one of them who was flying a park flyera couple ofyears ago will be Predident of our club next year. I look at it as an opportunity torecruitnew flyers and grow the sport. I hope to fly with them again sometime. These people are interested in participating in our hobby - I say let's bring them into the fold. As an added bonus - they expressed an interest in gliders andI was able to refer them to DAW and some of the other fine vendors that provide us with our toys. Take a look at MYHQ.com. I have been using this for years now for bookmarks. As long as you can log on to the internet, from anywhere, you have your bookmarks. It is free and reliable. It is a snap to add the page that you are looking at, and even add it to the category that you want to put it in You can export the links to a file on your computer for backup, or storage. WOW! :-) http://www.b2streamlines.com/RCSD.html Highlights of the December 2003 issue: The subject of Bill Bunny Kuhlman's "On the 'Wing..." column is Jochen Haas' Taborca 3. As well as being featured on the cover of RCSD, the Taborca 3 is examined in detail within this month¹s column. An American source for the LET Model kit is also provided. The cover photo shows Taborca 3 being launched at the Teck hills in southwest Germany. A color 8x10 "poster" of the cover photo can be downloaded from this link. Last month, the front and back covers of RCSD featured the Mantis. As promised, we provide its history this month. Written by Anker Berg-Sonne, the story unfolds beginning with the evolution and concluding with interesting developments which are curently underway. Between the beginning of the Mantis to it's current state of evolution, Anker talks about the major changes that occured during the Barnes era, the Luckenbach influence, the Drela revolution, and Phil Barnes who came to the rescue, again. The complete article is available as a single PDF file by downloading from this link. For those of you looking for Christmas or gift ideas throught the year, several members of the creative RCSD team have written a detailed article on the subject. Coordinated by Dave Register, the shopping list includes neat shop items, major projects, and a bunch of stuff in-between! Writers Bill Bunny Kuhlman, Dave Garwood, Greg Smith, and Dave Register started their shopping early! The Golden Age of model aviation, in the mind of Alvin Sugar, was the period roughly between 1965 and 1975, and he¹s written a book to better explain his philosophy on the subject. This month, Bill Bunny Kuhlman provide a review on Mr. Sugar's book, which includes tips, ideas and suggestions for anyone involved in the RC sailplane hobby. When it comes to in-depth technical design and analysis, Mark Drela is no stranger to the sailplane community! And, he keeps track of anything sailplane related that crosses his path. Beginning last month, Mark shared his findings and analysis on "Skin Sizing of Stressed-Skin Wings." This month Mark covers the elastic modulus of common foams. Technical editors Bill Bunny Kuhlman were pleased to have the opportunity to be in on the technical review of Mark's material, prepare the formatting for RCSD and, needless to say, get first read on Mark's articles!
Re: [RCSE] ARF problems
I expect that Tower Hobbies and that Group will replace the faulty BOT ARF wings. They are good with warranty and they take care of faulty goods that they sell. Their customer service is great. Today at a contest, I watched first hand, a brand new AVA, first launch ever, blow the tips off on a mild launch, and mild zoom, by an experienced flyer. The wing tips failed at the factory built outer joint, where there is a tiny short joiner, (not robust like the BOT :-) splitting the wood and carbon out. I am so glad I saved my $700.00 I was going to spend on one, until they are fixed correctly. At least with the BOT ARF, the cost is $135.00 with discount certificate. The AVA evidently has a problem too. The structure where the tips are factory attached is way too weak. IMHO (and others) . Bill G. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] What is the best winch battery?
I have not bought a deep cycle nattery for many years, so I thought this would be easy. I just started looking for one of these, and was amazed to see that some of the well known big retailers (like WallyMart) have only their own brands now. The largest of the 'house brand' batteries do not seem to have that much capacity, topping out at about 650 CCA. and maybe 150 reserve. Sears biggest one is about this same size also. I called some of the tire outlets and so far, they all seem to stop at about this size. We use a huge Trojan for the club winch (850CCA), and it will run us all day with lots of launches, but I can not locate a dealer from their web site. What are you guys using for winch batteries for club flying? Thanks Jack Harper RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News.
