2004-11-29 Thread Karlton Spindle

I still sell "cutting edge" radio equipment except much more power (16w) focused on a pinpoint target, much more precise then the RF we use in R/C. I hope no oneonRCSE ever needs what I sell, ever. http://www.orionemf.com/

I also sell bone hardware that is usedto fixate spines, thus the strange email address.
What gets me is that I just tried from my other email address to subscribe to RCSE but how in the world that other email showed up over a year old with this email address is beyond me. Can't be lurking on my PC because I have switched PCs in the last six months. Can't be from my subscribe attempt because I was using my other address.

How you doing?

Also I will be shipping out some other orders to Mike and Gordy.

I did this once, with mixed results...covered a carbon Renegade wing with
Ultracote Plus. This was the self adhesive stuff that doesn't require
much, if any heat. The results were quite good...until the first really
hot Southern California day on the slopes a few months later. At that
point, the covering totally bubbled all over the place and looked terrible.
I ended up stripping off the covering and just painted the thing.
Getting
the old adhesive off was also a huge pain, btw (though I didn't know about
Goo Gone at the time).

I'd just paint it..even with cans.

RE: [RCSE] Royal Evo's

2004-01-15 Thread Karlton Spindle
The concept for the EVO was to replace the 3000 series that came out in
1984. It is not on the same level of flexability of the P4000. BUT it is
designed to do 90% for 90% of all pilots at a price that can not be beat.
In a hand held / tray radio.

Funny the last design meeting where we chose to put the stick switches on
the side rather then rocker switches we did that for Joe and Daryl who said
this is what they wanted. Then Hitec did not pick either one of them up to
continue flying MPX radios! LOL

[RCSE] Royal EVOs Status report

2003-07-18 Thread Karlton Spindle

Dear friends,

Glen at Hitec USA informed me that the first shipment of Royal EVO radios
either has departed Germany or is about to.

He further informed that the first allotment of radios on the way is only 50
units to which 12 or so units allocated to other distributors.

We have now learned that the much-touted Royal EVO synthesized transmitters
9ch and 12ch are now NOT in the first shipment as announced.

Further inventory of this much-anticipated radio system are not projected
until late August. The 7, 9, 12ch and Synth units may or may not be in the
next shipment.

ALL we are receiving are 9ch crystal versions with the 9ch IPD receivers. We
will be filling oldest backorders with deposits first.

Lee,

The MC/V2's require the MPX (p/n #82091) programmer. The new Digi servos
from
MPX are replacements for the MC/V2's but they require their own programmer
(p/n
#82093). Here's the best part, the MC/V2 programmer won't work with the new
Digi servos and the new Digi servo programmer won't work with the old
MC/V2's,
so make sure that you get the correct programmer for the intended servos ;-)

Other programmers will not work.

 Hi Martin
Electric blankets are fine. I had a problem getting BSI epoxies Ex-slow
cure to properly harden even after 7 days!
I checked with BSI and was told that to properly cure the epoxy
temperature
had to be higher than 75F (Their brochure says 70F!) at the start! And
that
if too cold during the initial setting the epoxy will NEVER cure properly!
 I was at 68-69F!

Since then I have used a simple homemade hot box,. I use BSI's Finish-Cure
and I microwave the bottles for a few seconds before mixing (if bringing
them directly up from my cold basement!) and have not had a problem!

I also use Devcon's 5-minute and 2-ton epoxies (Considerably cheaper at
Wal-Mart!) and I have not noticed this same low temperature curing
problem!

[RCSE] New radio good bye to an old friend

2002-02-19 Thread Karlton Spindle

May of you have asked about the new Multiplex Radio. The ROYAL Evo has been
under development for three plus years. The design blends the best of both
hand held radios and tray radios in to one case. The primary function of
the radio is to replace the Multiplex WORK HORSE RADIO the Profi MC 3030 TX.

The Royal will be out in the USA October 2002. MPX tells me June I do not
think it will be till October.

The radio is NOT in the same class as the Profi 4000. It is a replacement
for the 3030.

I have a few 3030s in stock but now that the new radio has been shown I do
not think there will be a big rush on the 3030 as there was before.
SO

Dealers contact me for a Dealer only deal and End users We will be doing a
SO LONG FARE WELL Deal on remaining 3030 in stock. Dealers this also
includes you.

Thermal-Gromit Works will continue to support its products for the

We still have a number of our items in stock but will be liquidating them

Imitation the sincerest form of flattery.

 Karlton,

If these servos are an imitation does that mean that the new MPX Digi are
now smaller and have side mount lugs for wing mounting. I sure hope so
cause we all know RED is RIGHT when it comes to digital servos.

batteries for something similar to a golf cart. They came from the MFG
with
Trojan batteries, but we had trouble getting them for a while, so we
explored other alternatives. We ended up going back to the Trojan
batteries, it was hard to beat the performance and longevity. We replaced
the Trojan batteries about once every 28 months, as opposed to once every
18

The best value for the money is the Trojan golf cart battery, it comes
in
6v and 12v. Most people like the 6v. because the plates are a bit
thicker
and they tolerate abuse better, but the 12v can be cycled deeper than
any
 of
the other lead acid batteries. There is one better battery AGM I think,
 but
  not sure.

To be very candid; I appose the minimizing of vendor bashing. It should
not
be made into a joke. No, public forum comments should not be taken as
gospel
truth; DUH! But, it's a serious topic that we should not turn into jovial
 silliness.

There are vendors who I can't ever remember hearing bashed. And there are
others who receive it frequently. Gee, ever wonder why? Might be a reason
(heavy sarcasm). Let's praise the good vendors and honestly criticize
(only
when required) those who deserve it without the silliness. Maybe a little
more business will to the good vendors and the less worthy vendors might
 learn something.

Am I an idealistic fool? Yep.

 Hi Guys,

I am looking at trading for a MPX MC3030 and am getting to read the
manuals
and play with the radio before making my final decision and I am
completely
stumped right off the get go and need a little help. Here's the problem
which I am sure has a very simple fix that is too complicated for my even
simpler mind I guess. When I turn on the radio, the first screen I get is
 as follows:

 Line 1: Fx Mx-Test PPM7
 Line 2: 7.28V
 Line 3 OP. TIME 00:20
 Line 4: PROFI mc3030 3.0

When I hit the menu (M) key to start programming it goes to the following
 screen:

 Line1: Fx Mx-TESTPPM7
 Line 2:
 Line 3: ENTER CODE:
 Line 4:

If I hit any of the keys all that happens is the numbers in line 4 change
 and nothing else.

If I have just turned on the radio and get the first screen above and hit
RETURN (R) I get a series of beeps and then a time starts up and no matter
what key I hit nothing happens.

Can anybody help me get pass this mess so I can get into the real meat of
the radio. From reading the manual it looks like this thing can do just
about anything I need except maybe do my taxes and who knows maybe that is
 later in the manual.

 TIA,

Orders will go out FIRST IN, FIRST OUT basis.
Dealers will have them soon based on when their orders were placed and if
their account it clear to ship.

At the IHLGF most people were flying the 555, some were flying the new FMA

Personally, I flew the entire contest with the JR610 with NO glitches at
all!. Contrary to last year, the new RX I have was of the new variety and
have been flying it for a while. Having 10 other pilots at the field
during
a round, and as close as we were, it held up great. I did see instances
of
the berg having problems, but since I do not know the issues, I cannot
commnet on iit further. it may have been a one time thing.

I also flew JR R600's with the case removed. They are almost as light as
the many others and have been flyign them at Spring Fling and Visalia for
3
 years with no problems.

 Just my Option.

WellI gave in to the urge. A few years ago I got 3
NIB original Hobie Hawks. 2 were kits and one was an
ARF. I sold off the 2 kits to fund other projects and
horded away the ARF. I looked at it many times but
could not bring myself to cut into it's long time
newness. About a week ago I came to the conclusion
that they were made to fly and not sit in boxs in
storage. i put in some radio gear and went flying. I
have had a few Hobies over the past 25 years and this
one has to be the best one yet. When I went to check
the wing for trueness they were both right on the
money. All I had to do was tighten up the Monocote. It
is great, fabulous and wonderful. Glad I de-NIB'd it.
Take a look see if you'd like at...

SO get one! VVVBG
Even on the Profi 3030 (designed in 1984) Page 81 of the book goes over how
to set up a 6 servo wing ;) $435.00 For a TX for a plane that costs how
much?
No glider card needed!

In all honesty though Skip Miller has a good Stylus setup for 6 servo wings.

If any of you Profi 4000 pilots need one I will email the program for you to
download in to your TX. Of If any of you Profi 4000 pilots have one email
me the file so I can post it on our web page.

While this is certainly easier to setup than what I've come up with, it
doesn't allow for the following landing configuration:

Outboard Aileron - Up in crow mode
Inboard Aileron - Down a few degrees, ie partial flap
 Flaps- 90 degrees down

I don't know how important this is, having never flown a 6 servo wing, but
it is speced on Muller's setup sheet. There is also no ability to
camber/reflex/preset the additional surface, which is also speced. Again,
is this important, I don't know.

A local club member is using an ATL/NASA like setup I programmed for him
on
an Escape, he felt the full blown setup was too complicated. The Escape
flies very, very well with it. The folks in Denver are using yet another
setup I'm not familar with, and it works fine, too. There's more than one
 way to skin a cat.

I tried to setup all the features found on a setup sheet for the Escape
that
somebody emailed me a while back. Think I've got the Stylus doing it, but
it takes just about every feature of the Stylus to do it, and it requires
a
Y harness on the flaps. This isn't the dark ages, its making the best use
of what you've got on hand!

Yes, this is MUCH easier to do on a Profi, but that doesn't help much if
you
 don't have one.

Re: [RCSE] Artemis conventional stab plane

2001-06-28 Thread Karlton Spindle

I have the V version and LOVE IT!

Mike Ratner just stuffed a new flying stab version I got the fuse VBG
Albert is fixing the fuse so I will have both V and normal tail versions in
the air. If the conventional tail is as good as the V this is going to be
one hard to beat plane.

ONE BIG hint I learned about the hard way. FLAPS do not need to come down
90 on the V version. Have them come down only to the edge of the sweeper
this keeps the speed up a little on landing if you have 90 degrees the plane
is WAY TOO slow on landing with the V version. I kept landing short :

said your turning right.
I KNOW I needed a fresh set of eyes looking at the plane. Same with all
flight conditions. YES it is silly but saved me more then one plane.

Wow Karlton! I need to come to work for you! You must be getting planes
like
crazy. During the last 10 years of flying, I haven't gone through 99
planes
yet. However, I have gone through 3 transmitters. I find that transmitters
get worn out and out dated faster than I go through planes. Maybe if I
lived
in CA. and could fly all the time I would go through 99 planes per
transmitter. Of course I would have to work for Karlton so I could afford
 all these planes.

Re: [RCSE] Servos

2001-06-07 Thread Karlton Spindle

Not all quite true the Cockpit Digi Servo $45.00. That's less then some
ANALOG servos ;) Due out in a few weeks.

$270for 6 DIGITAL servos
$750for a molded plane
$510.00for a Profi 3030 and IPD receiver (can handle 99 planes)
$1,530.00 Total using your logic you would have to divide the cost of the
radio by 98 more planes so the radio is $5.20 per plane a real bargain!

So revised
$270.00 for 6 digital servos
$750.00 for the plane
$5.20 Amortized cost of the radio over 99 planes
$1,025.20 for a top of the line set up.

Calling the local contractor I found getting a new septic tank installed is
$4K that's 3K more then a new plane the choice is yours, fly or get off the
pot Perry. VBG

  June's club contest canceled.

On Tuesday morning, 6/5/01, Edgar Weisman passed on while jogging.
All efforts to revive him at the scene were unsuccessful.

We have lost a dear friend and strong supporter of TOSS. For many
years, Edgar has been a key member of our club. He has served as
president, vice-president, contest director, field finder, instructor,
mentor, competitor, and teacher. We owe much of what TOSS is today to
Edgar and his actions. Besides being a leader in the club, he got us
our
Redwood School and Paramount Ranch fields at which we fly today. He was
an instructor and mentor for many current and past club members. Has
represented TOSS at SC2, the TRIAD and BUBW (RES) contests for as long
as
I can remember. Edgar, Myles Moran and others started a highly
successful
program at Redwood School teaching kids how to build model airplanes and
demonstrating R/C sailplane flight. His dedication to our hobby was
demonstrated by hauling out winches to the field every Sunday. Or
better
yet, was to see his amazing collection of model aircraft in his
  workshop/garage.

There will be a 10:00 AM memorial service for Edgar at Mt. Sinai on
Sunday 6/10. We will be gathering at the field at 8:30 AM to car pool
/caravan to the service. If you wish to attend, please meet us at the
field. Maps and additional details will be provided at the field.

  Our condolences for his family.

We will dearly miss you Edgar. Happy flying and may the thermal gods be
  with you.

SPECIAL NOTE from your club president: Sunday's, 6/10, club contest has
been CANCELED in respect for Edgar and all that he has done for TOSS.
In
his honor, starting next year, every club contest held in June will be
known as the Edgar Weisman Memorial Contest.

P.S. We will be writing a biography on Edgar. If you have any
information on his past, photographs, or memories that you wish to
share,

 This offer is too Kool
Those, that know you already, Know, that you are Most generous to the
hobby.
For those of you who do not know Mr. Spindle, this is the kind of fella
he
 is, all the time.
I would urge all LSF Club Coordinators , to speak to their clubs, about
 this offer.
The Plane will do fine and the radio is just what a beginner needs. Not
too
 much, not too little !!!
We all would like to see more kids and / or beginners get into soaring,
and
this is certainly cheaper than when I started.
 Thanks for the Bandwidth

Here is the deal we all know we want kids to get in to soaring or R/C and
most have little to no money. I would also like to see kids BUILD a
plane
rather then take it out of a box. For some reason I think they will stay

So if your club has kids that come out and you want to help them I am
willing to do our Panda plane so cheap it is almost a give away. $30.00
also
I will do a special price on PICO radio to go with it so your club can
get a
person in the air for UNDER $200.00 in fact $185.00.

The radio will be a PICO line TX + IPD 7ch RX with 2 Cockpit BB servos
switch harness, crystals, receiver nicad pack AND PICO Charger. The
radio
is a computer radio with 4 mixes built in. As it comes it is a 4ch TX
BUT
as the pilot gets better and or changes planes they can add the other
 channels.

This is for clubs and or people to get others in to soaring.

 Good Morning
Last weekend a few of us from the RMSA drug that asw27 out that Gary
Lewan won at the Phoenix contest.
We had no respect for this glider.. We figured it was free, why not
tow it?? If it crashes in the prosess well who cares
How could this little thing fly well anyway.. The wing is too small..
 The fuse is too big..
We are use to duration models that perform.
We did tow it!! We used an LT-40 trainer.
I can't tell you how much fun we had!! All the tows were successfull and
 very high.
I was very impressed with the perfomance of this scale glider... Now we
have all the respect for this glider!!
I took thermals out low,,, We speced the asw.. It flies well, looks
 nice!!
I want to thank Kalton for his generosity at the Southwest classic...
You have provided some pilots with a very fun day at the flying
 field
And I am thinking of getting some scale ship in the future What was
I thinking??? These scale ships are very cool!!
 Thanks again

  Sirius and JR Transmitters...
Les, The only reason you could have
this problem is if there is a short in the JR adapter. The charger cannot put
out enough current to blow the fuse, and if you were to plug in the Tx plug
without the adapter it would not turn on at all. I
just read the last paragraph, the probable cause is that the JR plug in the
radio is a different size as well as reverse polarity. My guess is that there
is a very high resistance connection because of the different sizes. This is
why we sell an adapter for the JR and request that you NOT cut the wires to
change polarity. THE PLUG IS A DIFFERENT SIZE. Put
it back the way it was designed and get our JR Adapter $7.95 and I
guarantee this will eliminate your problem.Smooth

Quick question...I have a JR 8103 in good

(sp?) charger, and when the little blinky said 'done', took it off and went
off to fly. Went to turn on my JR, and no familiar 'beep' of the power
coming up. Just a dead screen. Pulled the frequency module and
checked the fuse...burnt. So, I replaced it, turned on my JR, and
nothing. Checked the fuse again...burnt! At that point I gave up
and sent it off for repairs. $60 later it returned with an explanation
of 'a short' as the cause. I then decided to use my Alpha-4 for future
charging (since it tells you when you have things reversed).Forgot
all about that incident 'til last weekend, when I found I needed to charge
my transmitter at the field, and I only had my Sirius. I hooked it
up...got the little green light, and went off to help out until it was
charged. Came back about 30 minutes later to find the green light
blinking. Took it off, when to power it upnothing!Fearing
the worst, I pulled the module, checked the fuseburnt again! I had
one more fuse left, so I put it in, fully expecting to turn on my
transmitter and fry it, but to my surprise it came right up.So, my
question to the masses...can you (do you) use your sirrius charger to charge
up your JR transmitter, or is the reverse polarity of the plug a stopper (or
something elselike the fuse). I have modified my sirrius
transmitter lead by cutting it in half and terminating both ends with molex
connectors so I can swap polarity by simply rolling the connectors for
the lead. It works fine for my Airtronics setup, but now I'm hesitant
to plug either of my JR's into it. (Yet my Litco works fine with the
same type of modified lead. in fact I use the same lead segment for
both the Litco and the Sirrius.) Has this just been a fluke, or should
I keep the Sirrius away from the JR?RCSE-List facilities provided by

to find one this small (most deep cycles are +600 CCA it seems).
I'm also concerned about weight, as my back really shouldn't be
lugging around a heavy +50 lb battery.

Any recommendations (note that I'm in Canada), or other
 suggestions are welcome.

Re: [RCSE] Servo damage? Just wondering :-)

2001-02-22 Thread Karlton Spindle

Well if the servos work and show no signs of gear damage. Then something
moved!
first look at what could have moved or compressed.. Like hinge tape or
links.

BUT I would check the servos if they moved more then a little;
To check the servos in the plane first before going to more aggressive
measures. Start with taking the linkage off the servo arm while the radio is
off and moving the servo through its range of motion SLOWLY feeling the arm
for any skips or binding in the gears. If a skip or a bind is felt change
gears.. If your worried at all send them in we have a very lonely service
tech even the Maytag guy thinks he is a boor.

How hard did you land?

Sorry Gordy, but I have to disagree. There is no more way for Karlton
to know whether his servos moved or his linkages came loose or bent
versus whether the servo(s) have sustained damage (unless he takes them
out and mails them in). The guys gave him some good suggestions of
things to check -- no sense sending the servos back to multiplex if the
problem is elsewhere. Seems a bit critical to call the suggestions he
got "useless" since they made perfect sense. And Karlton IS synonymous
with RCSE in my book -- it's a sure bet he will be one of the people to
respond to a multiplex question, so by posting here he got feedback from
Karlton AND some other smart folks

Sorry I didn't make it out to the SLNT contest Sunday -- hope you had

Re: [RCSE] Designed by Americans!

2001-02-10 Thread Karlton Spindle

I have been reluctant to jump in on this one. BUT VBG I do have the molds
for Daryl's new AMERICAN designed F3B plane in my shop. In fact Brian and
Daryl are due here any time to work on the molds.

My deal with Daryl is no extra planes RELEASED out of the molds until After
the worlds. And I can not talk about the plan form. So you have to trust
me... EVIL GRIN :

You all know I like to support our USA F3? teams. I doubt this plane will
be a HOT American seller and the cost of the molds will never be
recovered... The price you pay for progress. HOWEVER, I want to do 6 EXTRA
planes. YUP that is it out of the molds regardless. All money over the
cost of the planes and construction will go to the F3B team not me not Daryl
but to the USA team.

To get on the list of 5 requires a $3,000.00 donation to the team per plane
(donation includes "A Molded PLANE" we may have to substitute another F3B
plane "IF" Daryl's American design is a dog (I'm going to catch heck for
that crack but got to cover my bases).

Now if you want to get the full boat USA team F3B sponsorship deal. Plane
with MPX NEW "Digi" servos and Multiplex 4000 TX / IPD RX $5,500.00 donation
to the team. Plane and Radio equipment will be at my cost the rest goes to
the team...

  Hi all,

I've got an Airtronics flavor Hitec Supreme 8 FM receiver that I'd like to
trade anyone for an equivalent Futaba/Hitec shift receiver. I believe I
have some crystals around here for this receiver that I would provide with
the receiver. However, I do not need crystals and would trade a RX
 w/crystal for one without.

 E-mail me privately if interested.
