[RCSE] 2.4G lag time reality.

2008-03-07 Thread Paul Breed

One area that makes this fuzzy is the 2.4Ghz add on module.
If the module plugs into the back of what was once a 72Mhz system it
will not gain you any

lag time advantage. It may actually increase the lag time.

As the 2.4Ghz module is reading the pulse stream from the 72Mhz tx
and then sending the commands.

If the TX is natively transmitting 2.4G and does not have a module
then one could
expect the lag time to be better. But if you are using a 2.4G module
in a 72Mhz Tx then no dice.
there is no way for the 2.4G module to know what is happening any
faster than the
PPM pulses that go to the module. This is the same PPM stream that
the RX used to get minus the
RF path. and the RF path is instantaneous in comparison to the 20msec
pulse rep frequency.

Be VERY careful with abbreviations...
We have Single conversion
We have Dual conversion
and there is also a receiver topology called direct conversion.
The Radio guys use DC as an abbreviation for direct conversion.
As far as I know there are no direct conversion RC receivers, as it takes a
significant
DSP power to make a direct conversion receiver decode FM.
(PCM as used in RC is also a form of FM)

[RCSE] More Airfoil questions...

2005-02-14 Thread Paul Breed
In my search for a higher lift airfoil I'm looking at the DAE-51
I will be using it at a CL of around 1
At High CL it strikes me that the laminar flow (if any) would be on the bottom
surface. The wing is going to be built up with a wide rib spacing for
Solar Cells.
Would I find any benefit from making the bottom surface either foam,
or thin balsa sheeting to maximize the bottom surface accuracy?
This adds weight, but will it help efficiency?

Once again I ask the hard question, I know it will be better, but any
hint as to how much better?

[RCSE] Higher Lift Airfoils...

2005-02-09 Thread Paul Breed
I'm still fussing with my solar wing.
I've 95% answered my Planform questions, now it is on to airfoils.
The Airfoil I flew in 2004 was an airfoil Mark Drela designed for me
about 5 years ago. My request to him was a low pitching moment airfoil
with flat spots on it to put the solar cells.
Since then I've changed solar cells (50% more efficent) and they no longer
fit the flat spots.

I've also come to the conclusion that as built with a very light trailing
edge it is not
holding shape well enough to really be low pitching moment.

So I'm searching for an airfoil
Re will be around 170K
1)I want to minimize sink/maximize climb.
This means optimizing (Cl^1.5)/Cd (I think this is the element to maximize)
2)I'd like to minimize pitching moment to reduce wing structure.
3)The wing will be built up
I realize that #1 and #2 are some what counter to each other
In playing with things in profili I've found nothing that beats the clark-Y
for
maximizing requirement #1 I know there are much newer airfoils, and it's a
bit off topic for a soaring
group, but this seems to be where the brains hang out...

Re: [RCSE] The perfect platform or Not....

2005-02-08 Thread Paul Breed

Wing design is very complex. Folks make careers out of doing it.
I hadn't noticed ;-)

I'd suggest getting a copy of a spreadsheet written by John Hazel called
something like Liftroll. It's a good way to play with the basic aspects and
make reasonable choices of span, twist and chord. The basic principles are
consistent local Cl's across the span with an elliptical distribution of
lift across the span to minimize induced drag.
I've played with LiftRoll, but a couple of things escape me
I can adjust the planform twist to get eliptical lift distribution at one AOA
It is then off at a different AOA. (as expected for a rectangular platform)
So how do I convert this non-eliptical lift distribution to a drag number
for comparison.
I can use LiftRoll to adjust twist to make it look like an elipse or not,
but how do I
generate the comparison number from my origional post, IE wing 1 will have
min sink of 1 fps
and wing 2 will have minimum sink of X fps?

Paul
In General:
Min sink is when
(Cl ^(2/3) /Cd) is maximized.
How do I use LiftRoll to get a wing Cd, Cl given a polar Cl, Cd?
In LiftRoll is av/mx Cl the Cl I want to optimize for?
How do I go about guessing an AOA? (Again from the airfoil polar? )

If you can't find John's spreadsheet, I can forward either the simpler
earlier version or a more involved later version. If I can figure out how, I
could just put it on my website.

You don't necessarily want an elliptical lift distribution in a
real-world model, since that might result in turning behaviour that is a
little scary at times if your airfoil selections aren't correct.
You're really looking to optimize cruise here, right? (ie min power
setting for level flight). Look into the power factor calculation
available from xfoil/profili. Flight power is proportional to
CD/CL^1.5, but remember that CD is the total airframe drag coefficient,
so working with the airfoil Cd along isn't going to give you the full
picture.
How do I use LiftRoll to get a wing Cd, Cl given a polar Cl, Cd?
Very simple...you can't. It's not designed to be able to give you this
information, since at no point does it incorporate actual airfoil data.
In LiftRoll is av/mx Cl the Cl I want to optimize for?
That's a planform efficiency number, giving you a measure of how
aggressive the planform design is. Real-world meaning: a high
efficiency number will require a more competent pilot, since upon
reaching stall more of the wing will let go at the same time.
Compromising this measure will result in a model that's easier to fly
over a wide range of conditions.
How do I go about guessing an AOA? (Again from the airfoil polar? )
Don't bother...I've already made a sheet that will calculate it for you
(overall Cd, wing drag, tail drag etc). You need to know the weight of
the model (assuming you're calculating a level flight condition, ie
weight=lift required) and you need access to the airfoil polar data from
Profili/Xfoil at the appropriate Re#
Go to the following link to download the sheet...based off of LiftRoll

As a matter of record I created, cad modified, and cut 2 each of
12 different ribs in about 90 minutes.
That's less than 4 min a rib and I could make a second identical set in

[RCSE] The perfect platform or Not....

2005-02-07 Thread Paul Breed
I've asked around this question in the past,
but the answers or my brain have all missed the mark a little bit...
So I'll be more specific:
Given two wings, same span, same area, same weights
1)A a square tip wing
aspect ratio of 12
10 degrees simple dihedral.
Twist optimized for a single most efficient point
2)A perfect elliptical wing with perfect elliptical lift distribution
aspect ratio 12
10 degrees simple dihedral, or simple polyhedral with a flat center.
Twist optimized for a single most efficient point
I want to optimize minimum sink (climb actually but minimum sink is a good
stand in)

If wing 1 sinks at 1 ft/sec
Will wing 2 sink at .95 or .5 or
The tradeoff I'm trying (presently unsuccessfully) to weigh is
for my solar plane, a non square wing really ads to the complexity
of the power conversion and cell packing density.
I can exactly quantify how much weight and power a non square wing costs me.
What I can't currently quantify is the loss of efficiency for a well designed
square wing.
(McCready's Pathfinder/helios were square so I can't be too far off ;)

[RCSE] Tailboom deflection..

2004-12-31 Thread Paul Breed
I'm in the process of rebuilding my Solar plane and I want to do some
ground based static tests before I risk another infight structural failure.
The failure was caused by one of two possibilities.
1)The Spar in the H-Stab failed at speed.
2)The Tail boom was too flexible leading to a tuck runaway followed by
failure of the the H-Stab.
I'm rebuilding using the HT21 airfoil for the H-Stab.
My design VNE speed is 50 mph.
My Hstab is 36 span, 4 tip and 7 root chord.
How much force can this airfoil generate at 50MPH? (To static test the spar)
How much tail boom deflection at this force is acceptable?
I'd like to static test both parameters before I risk another failure.

[RCSE] All flying vertical stab...

2004-12-02 Thread Paul Breed
What are the issues with an all flying vertical stab?
I'm building the new tail for my solar plane and I'm thinking I'll make a
Drela style carbon V mount for the vstab.

In trying to make everything light and survivable It looks like I can make
an all flying
vertical stab lighter than a normal rudder.

My Thoughts:
I can build a one piece foil lighter than a two piece foil even with a
tape hinge.

The Plane is Rudder Elevator and has heavy wings thus I don't really want
much adverse roll from the rudder.
This makes me want to build a vertical stab that is both above and below
the boom.

To survive landing/ground contact the part below the boom has to be
heavy/sturdy.

If I make the vstab all flying then I can make it pivot around a single
bolt on the all flying mount, thus
it piviots out of the way rather than absorbing landing loads.

Does this make sense or am I way off base for some reason I don't understand?
Any airfoil suggestions? (Currently looking at a thickened HT08

Re: [RCSE] All flying vertical stab...

2004-12-02 Thread Paul Breed

Putting the rudder on a V-mount works fine, except striking the rudder
on the ground may cause it to break. I suppose you could have the V-mounted
rudder mostly above the boom, which would minimize the torques on the
V-mount from a ground strike. But rudder airloads will torque the boom more.
My thought was that the rudder strikes on landing would most likely be
from straight ahead. If the rudder was attached with a single bolt then
it should pivot around that bolt, and not transmit much load to anything?
The Flight loads wanting to rotate the rudder fore and aft in the vertical
plane
should be almost zero if the mount is in the rudder center???

I realize that the rotating prop puts some diferential airflow into the
equation
but I wouldn;t think it was that much

Am I missing something?
Then there's the agony of deciding whether to put the rudder on the right side
or the left side of the boom...
I'm currently living in The Peoples Republic of California, so it's got to
go on the Left side ;-)

[RCSE] Stab Spar Sizing...

2004-11-27 Thread Paul Breed
The Hstab spar failed on my Solar Glider,
It was probably a combination of tail boom flex tuck
and actual spar failure. The spar was laminated
Spruce, balsa spruce.
See:http://www.rasdoc.com/splinter/solar2004.htmhttp://www.rasdoc.com/splinter/solar2004.htm
I'm thinking that the new Hstab will have a CF spar caps with balsa
core.
The Tail airfoil for the new Hstab will be Mark Drella's HT21
The design VNE of the airframe is 50mph. (It's slow)
The old Hstab had a root chord of 7 a tip chord of 3.5 and
a span of 36
Any suggestions for spar sizing?
I'd like a safety factor of 1.5 or so, I'm willing to
build multiple sets and static test things to destruction
to shave off every gram.
On this model tail weight is everything!
The solar panels make the wing CG aft of the desired CG and with
no batteries the only counter weight is the power conversion
electronics and the motor. Every gram in the tail is two grams in the lead
spinner.
So I'll taper in 3D and do whatever is necessary to reduce weight.
I was also thinking about making built up ribs, so any weight saving
thoughts on this would be helpful.

[RCSE] Wing Design Help...

2004-11-15 Thread Paul Breed
As I posted a month or so ago I'm working on my solar powered plane.
http://www.rasdoc.com/splinter/solar2004.htm
In the past I was restricted to a Hershey Bar wing shape to
keep the number of cells in each row the same.
Now I am running the individual rows of solar cells into
separate power point trackers, thus I can vary the wing shape.
Several rules
I need to keep the wing area the same
I'd prefer not to change the root chord very much, but I could add some
taper at the tips...

something like going from three rows of cells to two rows to one
tapering either the leading or trailing edge.

Realize that the cells have to stay square, I can't taper them so
the transitions will need to some what abrupt, I also can't waste much
wing area for unused space with no cells as I'm right up on the FAI area
limit and
every square cm without cell is wasted power.

I'm not out to maximize L/D, but minimum sink( Actually maximum climb, but
close enough to min sink).

In the past I've also used an airfoil with a low pitching moment to
minimize structural mass.

Any thoughts or suggestions as I start to prepare for next springs effort.

N186 Distance in a straight line. (Currently 48.21km or 29.94 mi)
N187 Gain in Altitude. (Currently 2065M or 6773 ft )
N188Goal and Return. (Not yet Set)
The aircraft I built is also capable of setting the following records for
electric aircraft with
a combination of sources of current.

N193 Distance in a straight line.
N194 Gain in altitude
N195 Goal and Return (Not yet Set)
I currently live in San Diego and I need help finding an AMA CD that would
be willing to work with me in Southern CA, or in AZ?
I would preferably like to contact someone that is familiar with he record
setting process.
I've read the FAI checklist and i have both my AMA and FAI sporting
cards/licenses.

The airframe is ready today for the distance records, and I'm planning on
testing the telemetry
and higher power HAM transmitter needed to set the altitude record this
weekend.

Any help or pointers you can provide would be very welcome.

[RCSE] Tail volume coefficient....

2003-06-03 Thread Paul Breed
A few years ago, someone gave me a real clear answer on how to size the tail on
a RES floater type plane with dihedral.
I believe that the calculations were titled tail volume coefficient

It went something like:

Vertical Stabilizer+Rudder area * moment arm (from CG ?) / (wing area*
span) == some range

Same basic formula for Horizontal stabilizer and elevator only it did not
account for span just wing area

There were subtle differences between the two formulas

Could someone please re-enlighten me?

Specifically I'd like to know:
Formula for Horizontal Stabilizer coefficient.
Formula to Vertical stabilizer coefficent.
Reasonable range(s) for a slow floater type aircraft.

Thanks in advance.

[RCSE] GPS system was The X-C boys out west are doing just that.

2002-08-20 Thread Paul Breed

Do you think a GPS system could be developed that would be able to
download data that would let you see the flight in 3D? That would be too
cool!!!

Yes if the market was there, one can buy small GPS units that are
about the size of a large postage stamp with a weight of ~8grams.
Add an antenna ~8 gms and a small battery and one could have a system
good for several hours the size of a mini servo.

This is purely a question of market size, If one were to sell only 1 unit,
it would cost 10K+, if one sold 10K units then it would be about $150.00

To give you an example:
The 8gm GPS is made by uBlox, it has an internal CPU that is idle
40% of the time, so it has more than enough CPU horsepower to log
all of the flight data, the caveat being that the software development kit that
allows you to download your own custom code to the ublox receiver
is $5000 (this was the price 18 months ago when I last checked)

Next Item to consider:
without local correction GPS altitude is not so accurate, +/- 50m and
barometric pressure has al sorts of problems with a good static reference
port that is not effected by airspeed.
The GPS can be made much more accurate, (+/-10cm) , but this requires more
equipment
a ground station that records the current atmospheric distortions of the
GPS signals,
and a more capable receiver in the plane. One can do amazing things with the
technology, it is simply a problem of wether or not the market would
support such efforts.

Using the similar (slightly larger) technology I built a small unit the
size of a computer mouse to
put in my teenagers car..
The whole purpose of the device:
Friend: How fast is this car..
Son: I can't show you, my Dad is an AS***OLE and put this
tracking device in that records when I speed.

I don't even need to look at the data, it's just there as a reminder that
Dad is watching and as a outlet
to avoid peer pressure.

Re: [RCSE] Just a Flying Contest

2002-08-12 Thread Paul Breed

GPS could be used to do total energy, as it has both ground speed and
altitude. (I know wind contribution to airspeed is lost)

The real danger to this format is that any quest for maximum altitude
will result in pilots flying to altitudes that are unsafe.

Unsafe, because they are too far away.
Unsafe because you are high enough to interfere with regular full size air
traffic.
Unsafe because one would want to maximize the dive back down speed,
high speed missiles loosing their wings and impacting randomly around the
pits would be very bad.

With GPS one could add some additional tasks to make the event more
challenging.

Limit the boundary that you can fly in.

Make it altitude gain from the 1st minute of flight,
this would eliminate the whole zoom launch, gorilla tow motor problem.

Add some precision.
Pilots put in bids, I can gain 5Kft in 10 minutes,
Hitting within 5% of your bid is worth something,
this would add the skill of predicting the performance given the conditions
before flying.

Lots of possibilities...

Paul

Interesting discussion. Although some type of electronic measurement of

If the tight scoring in F3J is a problems perhaps FAI should simply impose
a wing span limit on the planes. I submit that this would be relatively
simple to implement and leaves all the other elements of F3J intact. If
the wing span were limited to, say, 2 meters the flying skill required to
max the rounds would certainly be increased and spread the scores
accordingly. A 2.5 meter limit would probably do as well.

Just another thought.

When electronic loggers and telemetry become readily affordable,
  (which we
are on the threshold of now), maybe there could be a format that
  emphasized
flying alone with each contestant having a logging device onboard.

I'll bet that some form of Jim's idea becomes the contest of the
future. For the price of a winch/retriever, a club can buy a few ALTis
or LoLos. Maybe soon there'll be a micro-GPS unit (I have a Garmin
Vista, which is cool, but it's not practical for this use). That would
open up even more possibilities.

Anyway, it's obvious that the present F3J format, for example, will
have to be changed. Planes are on the towline for 5 seconds, they max
whatever time is required, and then get 95 or 100 landing points. The
field is bunched so that the 5th place flyer has 99.7% of the winner's
score. The WC may well be decided by a slow or quick punch of a timer's
button.

Fiddling with target times, relative importance of landings, and launch
mechanisms won't change the fundamental issue. Adding speed, as Daryl
slyly suggests, would turn F3J into F3B. Jim's suggestion is, in my
mind, the one that could promise to spread out the field, clearly
identifying superior flying.

So what's the task? A pure calculation of cumulative altitude gained
creates a need for energy compensation, which complicates matters quite
a bit. How about this: a 10-minute task, with points for duration and
additional points for the maximum altitude gained during any 180
seconds during the flight.

Altitude gained over any 3-minute window would be less subject to
fiddling. If you found strong lift, you could dive, zoom back up, then
circle and climb. Sure, an uncompensated vario would credit you with
the zoom. But only the first one would count, since your gain would be
from the bottom of that dive to the window's end 3 minutes later. And
there would be lots of tactical decision-making involved in such a
task. Think about the many dilemmas that would face the pilot -- it's
quite interesting!

Anyway, we need good new ideas for a contest format. Cool techno
gimmicks are present everywhere in this sport -- why have our
championships determined by a thumb-operated stop watch, and a ruler?

How would this performance change at extreme high altitude?

30,000ft, 60,000 ft etc

It is my understanding that the indicated Air speed would remain constant,
but true air speed would increase.

Would the minimum sink speed scale by the same factor?

2001-11-18 Thread Paul Breed

20 years ago I worked as an aircraft Mechanic.
It was hard to feel completely comfortable when inspecting Aluminum structures.
When an Al structure started to have problems(corrosion etc..)
one could visually see signs of problems long before they were structurally
significant.

I just don't see how composite structures can be treated the same way.
The structure can fail from the inside out, and performing sophisticated
inspections
on parts that look fine will take some real paperwork discipline.

This particular aircraft (According to news reports) had:
1)A previous hard landing.
2)A previous repair to the V-Stab mounting point.

In hind sight both things should have caused increased monitoring of these
components. Increased monitoring is easy when it means look at the part
with a flashlight or some spray on crack finder,
but it's a harder thing when it means, ultrasonic, x-ray or
other specialized inspections requiring removal of the V-Stab.

The Aerospace industry has seen composite construction as a big win in
terms of production flexibility and
and weight reduction. It will take time to see if the increased inspection
costs associated with
composite construction will become an issue now.

When you build a part like the V shaped support,

to dimension after it cures?

2)If you can trim it to final dimensions, does the vibration of
some thing like a dremel tool cause delamination or weakness?

3)After my part comes out of my simple mold can I
add the reenforcing tow as a second step?

4)If I am molding in multiple steps what precautions should I take
to insure that I get a good bond in the secondary steps?

5)What do you use for mold release?
Where do you get it?

6)If I don't need a perfect finish can a use a cheaper/easier to get mold

[RCSE] First Flight Report/Problems..

2000-07-24 Thread Paul Breed

My Soon to be Solar airplane had its first flight today without cells.
It was a good news /bad news flight

Good news... It has plenty of power and the pitch trim stability
seemed to be good.

Bad news...
It has a spiral stability problem.
It was a bumpy strong thermal day and it got upset and entered
whatlooked like a classic case of the death spiral

With full opposite rudder the spiral just got steeper until it hit the ground.
With such a slow aircraft this all happened in slow motion.
It was in the CSRC long grass so the only damage was one wing tip.
It is easily repairable.

Now to speculate on why this happened.
It is a Rudder Elevator bird with no Ailerons

1)I believe that I do not have enough Dihedral by a factor of two.
It was recommended that I have at least 10 degrees.
I read this as ten degrees total angle at the wing root, 5 degrees on both
sides.
The general consensus on the flying field is that 10 degrees refers to both
wings,
and the total angle at the center section should be 20 degrees.
Should it be 10 total or 10 each side?

2)The vertical stabilizer fails the "that looks about right" test by
looking to be too large. Since I have a large moment of inertia I
was targeting the vertical tail volume of 0.025 to 0.030
The calculated Vv of the plane as flown is 0.030

21" span * 10" cord on 44" arm aft of a 14" cord wing with 178 in span.
(The 10" cord includes 4" of rudder and 6" of stab)

Vv = A_vert * arm_vert / A_wing * span
Vv= ((21*10)*44)/(14*148*148) =0.030

Is this too much v stab?
With the fairly long AR stab, full rudder seems like it would induce a
rolling moment, the wrong way.

The way it is made it would be trivial to reduce the span by 2.5" to 18.5"
Vv=0.0265  or to
16" Vv=0.0229 Should I do this?

Thanks in advance for any help

Re: [RCSE] Re:Mars Lander Important!

1999-12-08 Thread Paul Breed

 We are
tending to try to do more science with less funding. I wonder how smart
that
is? The weak link in the system may be the political one.

I personally am completely behind you folks - As a matter of fact, I would
like to see your budget expanded (maybe this would not have happened
otherwise!).

I just finished sending Snail-Mail letters to my congressman and my
senators asking them to give NASA more $$ for this kind of exploration.

If you guys really want to support NASA put down your trannsmitter / x-acto
knife and write a letter!

P.S.
At the planetfest Aeroenvironment had a cool RC glider that is designed to be
droped on mars. IT Unfolds and then glides for 20 min.
