Re: [RCSE] Why Go EVO?
Says Karlton: You are saying that R/C Soaring is SO Counter-Intuitive to you that you joined this list. Let's see: For a while I found it counterintuitive that using flaps needed elevator compensation, that ailerons and V-tails shouldn't go up and down the same amounts, that less stable planes perform better once you get the hang of rearward GCs, and that zooming is more effective when not diving half-way down to the ground. So, my answers are: YUP, YUP, YUP, and YUP. Yet, I can't be totally dumb, as I DID figure out on my own how to use a JR347 and 8103. But, I haven't seen any dedicated elevator-compensation lists, aileron and V-tail differential support groups, or self-help zooming related bulletin boards. However, I must admit that I spent some time on Dr. Gordy's special CG counseling and trimming couch. I'm neutral regarding EVO, my radio works fine. It just seemed weird that the EVO is so popular when people have trouble programming it. --- Rense Lange --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Futaba, JR, and Airtronicscan sell you a radio that will workwell for a full house sailplane. Multiplex can sell you one that uses more modern and reliable technology to do so. I work in an environment where we cherish reliability and spend a lot of time, money, and energy to reduce parts count in electronic products. Open up the back of an Evo and count the parts- that's easy to do with an Evo. Checkout the part number on the microprocessor. Go to the TI website and look at the microprocessor specs.Count wires and connectors and bear in mind that all of these things represent a possible way to kill your plane when something doesn't work. Do the same for the other transmitters on the market. I'm not an expert and I haven't disected every 'mitter currently available, but I have taken a good look into a few of them. If you do this you will also understand why the Evo will operate for 9 hours plus on 6 AA cells while putting out higher rf power. It's not perpeptual motion, just more effecient components that weren't on the market when the other radios were designed. Would I scrap a good radio to move to the Evo? Probably not.The smart bet would be to wait a year and see if the Evo really works as good as some think it will. All the great design in the world won't help if somebody screwed up, the QC at the factory stinks, or the manufacturer doesn't support the product. But I've lost a few planes over the past year due to broken wires and cracked boards in my transmitters. I swapped over, and so far I'm a happy customer so far. Bottom line is you pay your money and you take your chances - but it's smart to be an informed buyer and reduce the chances of something bad happening. happy trails - Rob Glover
RE: [RCSE] Re: 1st Glider
Hm, I forgot the name of my first RC glider that I got in the late 80's. It was an Ace 1.5M all foam wing glider with a power pod on top, powered by a Cox .049, all fished out of the hobbyshop's bargain bin together with a $30 Futaba 2-channel AM system. It never flew all that well - although that may well have been my fault, this being my first RC glider. It died a slow death by expoxy: it would break and I'd fix it with expoxy, this would make it heavier and fly worse and break more, etc. I didn't have much luck with the Cox either and remember visiting the hospital with a chopped finger. All this made me think that I needed something bigger and lighter, and I got myself an Olympic II. Given my earlier experience with tow-line gliders, it was first launched with a son powered stretch of fishing line. Probably best of all, I also found myself some flying buddies who actually knew how to thermal and who had high starts! Well, after that flying became easier and more fun. After that I got myself a Spirit 2M and attended the 90 NATS, and this taught me more in three days than I'd learned in the years before. I figured I needed a better plane yet, and got myself a Quasoar, 2 eventually, mostly because the designer (Paul Carlson) lived in the same town as I did. I liked the Quasoars, as these flew really well, but both crashed eventually (one drowned in a basement flood). I then quit the hobby for about 8 years for various reasons, to return 2-3 years ago. Although it has been flown hundreds of times, the Olympic never had a serious crash (monokote tears only). I still have it and it still has the old Futaba AM dry-cell system. I bring it out for interested beginners to fly. Even though it is now over 15 years old, I even thought to enter it into RES contests, but I haven't done so yet. I never seriously crashed the Spirit either and I eventually gave it to an acquaintance to learn how to fly. --- Rense Lange --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Did anybody go flying today?
Went flying my Sharon, expecting huge thermals and leisurely flights. No such luck! There was light lift in places and I could hold the plane in the air by flying flat and carefully, but by and large it was a landing oriented afternoon in my favorite schoolyard. Well, landing is where my major weakness is anyway. I still cannot predict by standing in my backyard whether there will be good thermals or not. [RCSE] One of those days...
I don't know how the weather was where you guys live, but the flying air was truly amazing here in Springfield IL - I've never seen anything like it. I went to my schoolyard flying spot around 12:30 with my Sharon, and immediately noticed stuff flying through the air, including leaves from the corn plants, fuzzy plant seeds, styrofoam pieces, plastic wrappers, and large strings of spider web that would glisten in the sun forming long shiny streaks. Moreover, this kept up most of the 2 1/2 hours I was flying. On the second launch, the plane visibly stretched the highstart in flight (i.e., upwards) and within 20 secs the Sharon was so high that it became almost invisible. Lift seemed to be everywhere and I had to dive with full crow to descend visibly. I went up about 8 times from 50ft and given the available energy, this 12ft 80oz baby was almost as nimble as a handlaunch. I have the plane trimmed as per Gordy's instructions, so very little down was required for inverted flying, but I need more practice to thermal that way. Re: [RCSE] Steve VS Bill
This Mac vs. Windows things keeps getting a lot of attention here. The shift from to Windows was actually quite sudden, and is best described by a catastrophe model, i.e., a model that has jumps in it. Such jumps occur because once firms favor one OS over the other, it is more efficient for everyone to go with the apparent winner so as to minimize compatibility issues. We found that the jumps were indeed dramatic for a particular product (Lotus Freelance). [RCSE] Tip: download the blaster worm (LovSan) fix now
I don't quite knew where I got it, perhaps here or elsewhere, but this blaster worm virus (also called LovSan) was hard to get rid off. In case you get it, go to website: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.rem oval.tool.html and download a small program for free. I had to run it a couple of times to clean my disks. It will also ask you if you want to download the Windows fix - which you should already have done, but many people didn't. Also, follow the instructions concerning turning off your restore utility options, although if you were really counting on having your last system restores available I wouldn't know what to tell you as it seems that things get deleted. Even if you don't have the blaster virus now you might as well download the fix because if you get the virus, it will close down your computer after a few minutes, thus making it difficult to download anything (it took me an hour of trying to get the removal program etc). [RCSE] Beware of stupid CA use - the case of my new Sierra
Just finished my Sierra 100 Arthobby plane and it came out at 45oz RTF. Given work and weather I was only able to hand toss it in the park. The plane is quite fast as it flew nicely some 150ft forward into a 10 mph head wind from an energetic toss. So, it does what I expected and what is advertised. Things looked good! Now for the stupid part on my side. The plane still needed some little things done like antenna straightened in the fuse, servo cans screwed rather than taped etc. AND I needed to shrink the electrical shrink wrap around the wires leading into the nice green Multiplex style 6-point female plug that goes into the male one on the bottom of the wing. Did all that, and then decided that I'd protect the wires going into the plug by adding a big shrink wrap around all six wires. To further improve the effects of the big shrink wrap I also poured a lot of medium CA glue inside the cavity (i.e.., at the back of the plug inside the shrink wrap) to prevent the wrap from ever moving. I'm positively sure that it never will. However, you already guessed, the CA also went through the plug and clogged the holes on the other side. After using all swear-words in my vocabulary at least twice I used debonder and tried poking the CA out with syringe needles - all to no real avail as the contacts remain intermittent. I had been frantically finishing this plane for the last few nights to take on a trip along I64 to Washington and back (something that also may be cancelled due to the war), and I was to leave tomorrow night. Of course I also don't have a spare plug available, and even though I have already placed an order to Multiplex, it won't be in time. Also, the male part is superbly glued into the wing without much wiring slack, so taking it out and replacing it by two deans plugs won't work either without re-doing all wiring. Is there anyone near Springfield IL who would have one of those green Multiplex 6-point plugs (female) that I could beg/borrow/ steal TOMORROW until mine arrive? --- Rense Lange --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Common Experience Questions
My questions are: 1b. Why did we not give up like most others do? - Even though things broke, enough went right to keep what I wanted alive. And, just a few good experiences indicated that this could be done. I guess I like doing (some) things that take a lot of skill and preparation to do right. Why model sailplanes? The fun of seeing something that ought not to fly (wood, plastic, metal) fly very elegantly. 2b. Are we doing any good with our urgings? - Well, for US we do - others might not agree. Now, if we spent all that time working we'd make more money - but (a lot of) money never was my thing. Despite ARFs etc. you can't buy this kind of experience. RE: [RCSE] This winter is getting long ..
I've been updating and remodeling my Sharon and XP3. The latter needed dents removed and I changed the wing servos. Due of a variety of circumstances I haven't had time to fly either plane all that much, but next season I intend to go full blast. I want to practice and become good enough to go to contests without fear of killing innocent bystanders in the landing zone (precision landing ain't my thing). To practice winter flights I got out the Sharon last weekend, and I managed to fly enough to qualify for LSF level I. Level II should not be a problem either, as I've done far more than that in the past, but this will have to wait untill the Summer. As for new planes, I've building moderately hard on my Sierra and it is nearly done except for the lacquering the wings. I expect this plane to be perfect for keeping in the car together with the XP3 - you know, to get them out whenever there is an occasion to fly. Already I plan to prolong a work related car trip to Washington DC (from Springfield, IL) by taking a few days vacation along I 64 and visiting various slope sites (Blue Ridge Mnts, Frankfurt Kty). I cannot wait to see some nice slopes to fly this Sierra. I've been told to bring something foamy as well since some slopes may be hard to land on. So, I will take along my old Zagi just in case. --- Rense Lange --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] A violation of the laws of nature?
Today, my XP3 hit a pole, a 3 ft high metal pole. It did not hit hard, and little harm was done, but hard enough to say that it hit rather than just touched. I had noted the pole earlier, but it seemed far away: you know, nothing to worry about far away. At first I considered the possibility that the accident could be due to the flaws in my flying skills or my eyesight,(I am due for new glasses) but then I remembered some old physics lessons. And, it dawned on me: This should not have happened as the attracting force between two objects (a) increases with the mass of the objects, and (b) decreases with their distance, quadratic no less, if I remember well. Well, the XP3 certainly has not a great mass - it came out weighing 11oz. Also, the last time I saw the pole it was far from the plane, hence there should have been very little force in this respect as well. But, it now seems obvious that the pole must have attracted (almost lured) the plane, exactly what physics says should NOT have happened! I'm sure some of you guys have had similar experiences. Perhaps we should inform the National Bureau of Standards (or some such institution) concerning this violation of the laws of nature. Or, on a more ominous note, we might look into what plane manufacturers do in their workshops to bring about such effects! --- Rense Lange --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Volz gears vs. one square inch of epoxy bond
A few days ago Ilanded my Sharon imperfectly, scraping the grass with the lowered flaps (yeah, I know). Flew again, and discovered that things were wacky, and traced this toa flap that moved freely on its own. Since I finally had the servo covers installed "for real" I couldn't just check things, but I figured thatI had brokena gear in the MicroMaxx HP and called it a day. Well, it now turns out that the Micromaxx is just fine, but that the carefully glued-in plywood holder came loose from the top wing skin. The 15-min epoxy over about one square inch of clean flat surface proved to be weaker than the gear! (the plywood was nicely glued everywhere). I can hardly believe this, those gears must be really strong. Since I'd heard that Volz gears supposedlynever break, I figured that Iwas about to cause Gordy a lot of grief. We have always had to do most of the work in our events--even before LSF took over. In defense of Model Aviation and Bob Hunt and control line I have a couple of comments. Unlike soaring where we all fly multiple events the control line events are radically different from one to another and most control line flyers fly only their specific event. Generally speed flyers only fly speed (and the several classes within it), precision acrobatic flyers only fly PA (and the three major classes within it), etc. Therefore coverage is given to each cl discipline. Soaring has always been soaring, that's it, even though we fly different classes and events. Free flight and indoor and treated the same as we are. Remember that LSF is a special interest group and AMA is a political organization. Since I joined AMA in 1955 there have always been complaints about some aspect of the organization but all modelers are much better off with AMA than without it and we should support it and change it from within if necessary. [RCSE] Little NiMh gives trouble
I am trying to charge for the first time a 300 Mah NiMH battery. I have had it hooked up to my Alpha 4 on N, as well as to a regular wall charger. In both cases, I get a high voltage that however disappears extremely fast ( 1 min) when used to power the receiver and some servos. I've done this a few times now and it doesn't get any better. Any suggestions? Rense Lange RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Allegro kit for sale
I have a complete Allegro kit for sale, boom, laser cut wood, pod, special carbon fiber strips, small parts, the works - all I could get from the first production run (i.e., no radio parts or covering). All in original shape: nothing cut, glued, or anything. Unfortunately, I won't have the time to build it anytime soon. If I remember well, it came to about $200. So, that's what I'm asking, or reasonable best offer. Buyer pays shipping. Rense Lange RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News.
