[RCSE] Re: I have a Challenge for JR/Spectrum DSM Radios!
Gordy, if you were flying more complex scale sailplanes requiring upwards of 14 channels, you might better appreciate the flexibility and ease of programming that open programming offers. It ain't for everyone. AERF sailplanes have far simplier radio requirements. I just came back from flying in Europe. The top scale sailplane guys there are moving over to Futaba FX-30 and FX-40 radios as they are the only 14 channel radios around, feature the closest thing to MPX open programming and the 2.4 implementation does not require the kluge of multiple receivers. [RCSE] Re: Special Sportube TSA lock now offered!
Howdy Gordy, For the last 5 years I've made an annual pilgrimage to Europe to fly in one of the finest Alpine soaring venues: Hahnenmoospass in Switzerland. Alpine flying is at the exact opposite end of the world from you flat lander types (of which I am one as well). Typical landings are uphill and down wind. Neve a dull moment and you learn how to make an overnight repair on a broken sailplane real quick. In addition, we have flown at the Interlaken aerotow for the last few years and typically include another country as well on our trips e.g. Germany, Italy, etc. Airlines have included Air France, Delta, Alitalia and a few others I can't recall at the moment plus local Europeans like CitiJet. Having a wife and child allows 6 pieces of luggage: typically 3 Sportubes, 1 big cardboard box with TX, flight batteries, chargers, etc. and 2 suite cases with clothes, v-tails, etc. Planes on the last trip: 4 meter Lunak (2 meter cardboard box in lieu of one Sportube), small Minimoa, electric Escape, electric Graphite and another 2.5 meter electric glider...a something 2000. I fabricated some aluminum stops so the Sportubes cannot close beyond a certain point. I also attached a cable system to keep the two halves from sliding open. All this is to insure that if the locks were ever cut open or not fully engaged in the two case halves, the case would remain secure. Most of the time TSA agents just wipe the case with that special sniffer paper and let them go. Last year I had to open the big cardboard box. I can't remember the last time I had to open a Sportube for inspection. Maybe they figure that a middle age guy with wife and adorable daughter in tow pose no great threat. On the other hand, a single guy who spends a lot of time in search of dirty beaches might raise some security concerns! That's my story and I'm sticking with it. Join us this summer: we leave in mid-July for 2 weeks. [RCSE] Re: Special Sportube TSA lock now offered!
Gordy, I travel with Sportubes internationally and regular locks are OK. However, you have to be prepared to unlock Sportubes for inspection as you're checking in. Also, Sportubes have gone up in price but there are a couple of people selling them on eBay for around $140 instead of the list price of $170. [RCSE] Re: 3.45 Graphite, 2.4ghz AR900 receiver lots of Anxiety.
Brad, I fly a molded 3 meter Graphite with a regular 72MHZ setup and the carbon/kevlar fuse totally soaks up TX signals. I have to run my RX antenna outside the fuse with the end taped to a v-tail. If the antenna is outside the fuse but anywhere near it, signal strength is very poor. I only imagine that things are that much worse with a 2.4 setup. Any chance you can relocate the RX and its antennas to the wing center section, asssuming there's little or no carbon in it? I think the key is gettint the antennas away from the carbon/kevlar weave. [RCSE] Re: Wram Fliers
FYI: there's a cover letter in each packet sent to AMA clubs that provides venue details but clearly all the individual flyers should have also included this info. Here is a link to the Westchester County Center that provides directions: http://www.countycenter.biz/Directions.htm FYI: the show runs next Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 2/23-24. There will be a bunch of new exhibitors this year including Horizon Hobbies. I'm sure we'll see plenty of 2.4 GHZ systems on display from both Horizon and Futaba (Great Planes). I'm told there will be some spectular new (and huge) models in the static display and of course the swap shop is always a hot bed of activity. You all come early and stay late! [RCSE] Re: BAD VENDOR REPORT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Spend a bit more for a Sommer charger and you can plug leads into 5 battery packs of any type, charge/discharge each one any way you want. It runs on 12 volts, 110 or 220 AC without any adapters or transformers, everything is built in. I typically plug in 2 TXs, my tow plane RX battery, my tow plane ignition battery and a sailplane battery, then come back a couple of hours later and they're all ready to go. What's not to like?! [RCSE] Re: Foil Wing Bags
Rick, don't want to get into a pis*ing contest with anyone on this thread but last January I visited my friend Bie in Germany. He showed me how he makes his own bubble foil wing bags just like the commercially available German bags. The material Bie uses looks very similar to the stuff you find at HD. Bie has a very simple but clever way to make seals so you can create the bag structure. Hopefully he will read this thread and share his wing bag making secrets. I used to buy some great custom bags from www.wingbags.com but they folded. I finally went out and bought an industrial sewing machine and make my own from nylon fabric and car headliner material as the inner liner. [RCSE] Re: Is there something else comparable to the Litco Alpha 4
Sommer chargers will run rings around Litco. Charges 5 batteries at a time, any types and does all the other stuff like cycle, charge/discharge, etc. You plug in one battery, tell the charger the battery type and what you want to do with it e.g. charge, discharge, cycle, etc., plug into the next battery to the next port, repeat the process, etc. It remembers the type of battery each port did last so you don't have to tell it the battery type if you constantly plug say a nicad into port 1 all the time. In truth, it doesn't charge them all simultaneously (though you can set it to do that), its real strength is it does up to 5 packs one after the other without any intervention. The only downside, you have to order from Germany but I've done so and it's no big deal. Not the cheapest chargers but if you have a lot of packs of various types, it's a great piece of hardware. You can order the charger to run on 110, 220 and 12 volts (has all the converter circuits built in). http://www.sommer-electronic.de/shop/start.html Good luck, Steve -- SteveR SteveR's Profile: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/member.php?u=7591 View this thread: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=534739 RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] NIB Jaro Muller Escape For Sale
For sale: NIB Jaro Muller Escape, comes with both the electric fuse and the regular (non-electric) fuse. Wings are yellow on top, purple on bottom, a very Euro look and easy to see. Electric fuse is yellow, non-electric fuse is white. I bought this Escape as a backup ship as my original Escape is by far my favorite all molded sailplane. Since my original model is still in pristine condition after many flights, it looks like I won't need my backup ship after all. If you haven't seen a Jaro Muller sailplane up close, suffice it to say these are the world's finest molded sailplanes. The fit and finish are simply amazing. And the engineering is outstanding. All of the wing servos auto-connect when you slide the wings onto the big carbon wing spar. On the electric version, the nose cone holds the motor and RX battery as well as the motor and controller, has room for up to 14 cells. The fuselage is very streamlined yet there's enough room to install a Pic vario. I fly mine as electric on 12 1700 cells and get lots of fast climbs. It thermals and signals lift very well and there's no fear of things coming apart when you put it into screaming dives, inverted flight, etc. At today's dollar/Euro conversion and high international freight rates, my guess is this plane will cost somewhere in the range of $1,500. You can steal it for $1,000 plus local UPS shipping. PM if interested. I'm only selling it as described above. [RCSE] Re: Help With An Electric Escape
For those who have setup a Jaro Muller electric Escape, what servos have you used for the V-Tail? The only ones I've got that will fit are JR281 (digital version of the 241) and the Hitec 5125 thin wing servos. I'd just a soon use the Hitecs but I'm concerne that they are fairly heavy (.84 oz each). Any help greatly appreciated. Steve -- SteveR --- Posted from the RCGroups.com Discussion Forums.
