[RCSE] 14MZ touchscreen problems

2008-05-29 Thread TDL
I thought I'd ask this here since the 14MZ is brought up. I've been trying
to work with Futaba service on this issue for a while now and have not heard
anything back. I have 2 of the 14MZ's. The first one I got had the touch
screen problem where it would not recognize at a normal pressure touch. I
didn't bother to send it in cause I didn't want to be without a radio. By
the time I got around to picking up a second 14MZ, a year had passed and
when I called futaba service they told me it would be ~$200 to replace since
its out of warranty.

Last year, on the 14mz website a Futaba rep posted a comment on the forum
that the screens would be replaced free of charge because it is a known
Futaba prob. I emailed and called and was told no, we've not heard of the
issue.

Since then I've not heard from any Futaba Service rep regarding the matter.

I was told to just send it in and we'll look and determine then. The radio
is as new as day 1. It has been a backup and so it's been on the back
burner. Now it has become my 2.4G radio and it's a pain to use the scrolling
button to get to all the menus.

Any team Futaba member can comment on this issue. Thanks.

Oh yeah, when I called and spoke to someone last, made me feel like it was
my fault and that somehow I damaged the screen L. It's a pretty common
problem based on the reports from the 14mz forum.

RE: [RCSE] Re: Video camera Recommendation?

2008-04-28 Thread TDL
Base on a few recommendations, my wife decided to we should get the Canon
HV30, We did buy it through BH photo. Though Costco has it for the same
price we've bought a ton of SLR equip from BH. She can't believe you nerds
know this much about camcorders and of course wants to thank all the
responders.

Actually, Marks post made her decide we will wait to pick up the Canon HA X1
for the really important events :(. But I won't be in need of one till
probably when my Daughter is baptised. Anyway, if anyone is looking fro a
camcorder, the HV30 is one excellent piece!

Thanks again to all that replied!

Subject: [RCSE] Re: Video camera Recommendation?

Are you wanting to shoot everything in high-def? Or just some of it? Note
that wide screen 16 by 9 and high def are not always the same thing. You
can do very impressive wide screen digital video in standard definition and
yet not be actually high def, and it will cost you lots less. Lots. Not
everything you see on your wide screen TV at home is actually HD either, but
don't get me started, there is a LOT of misinformation out there on that
issue...

The hot prosumer cameras right now are the Sony EX1, the Panasonic HVX200,
and the latest version of the Cannon. All three of these feature a small
form factor, while they won't fit in your pocket, they are not huge as the
cameras TV news crews or film makers normally use. Yet they are popular with
the indie film maker crowd. Each camera has certain strengths and
weaknesses, so your choice will be influenced by your particular style and
needs. For example the Panasonic shoots on mini-Dv tape and also to
digital memory cards, called P2 cards, not unlike the memory card in a
high-end RC transmitter or still camera. But it only records high def or
standard to the cards, and standard def only to the tape. You can transfer
your footage for editing and burning to DVD's by slipping the P2 cards into
a laptop's card slot, or by using a firewire cable to any kind of computer.
Down side is that P2 cards are pricey and in the field its like changing out
short film magazine loads: happens at the most inconvenient times. Upside
is that the Panasonic has a gorgeous picture for the price, and can simulate
slow motion live inside the camera, in a way similar to cameras costing over
$30k. I have used this camera a couple times to shoot HD commercials and I
like it except for the P2 memory cards.

The Cannon has great electo-optical motion stabilization using actual
optics, the best in the biz. Handy when hand-holding telephoto shots for
long periods You can use most any Cannon lens you own with it.

The Sony EX1 is really really new, but is getting rave reviews as the
replacement for several of their most popular prosumer models. It may have
the best low light performance of the three, using a new technology image
sensor.

If you like long record times and recording in HD, consider a Focus
Enhancements Firestore external hard drive: it clips to any of these cameras
and connects to their firewire port, can record up to six hours as well as
do time lapse shots of clouds and stuff. Connect it to your computer with
that same firewire cable, and edit right from the drive unit. Spiffy when
used with a laptop.

Two things I have a bad opinion of: the recording format known as AVCHD, and
camcorders that record to a mini DVD. I don't trust the former, and the
latter is hard to edit with and really over-compresses the images into bad
quality, and the media is overpriced, runs too short, and is hard to locate
when you run out. I have yet to make up my mind about hard-drive-based
camcorders, one reason is what do you do when you want to shoot more but
haven't had a chance to offload your footage to a computer first? but I
like the external Firestore drives. JVC makes an HD camcorder that records
highdef to cheap Dv tape, it's a variation of AVCHD though. You can check
wikipedia for more about AVCHDversus an MPEG2 based HD and other formats.

Good places to shop: BH Photo-Video in New York is the bible of prices
and camera info for the industry. The salesmen are very knowledgeable and
scrupulously honest, they have the highest reputation in the land. Their
prices are usually very good: in fact if somebody else is asking more than
10 percent less for the same thing as BH you should be suspicious and look
them up on resellerratings.com. In that vein, stay away from an outfit
called Broadway Video. Don't believe me, look them up via google.

Once you shoot in HD, how are you going to show it? Laptop hard drive?
Always playing out of the camera? Right now the coming thing is BluRay, and
if you use Adobe brand editing and DVD authoring, you can burn HD onto
BluRay disks that anybody can play in a set-top BD player or computer hard
drive that's BD-capable. Those are going to be

[RCSE] Video Camera Recommendation?

2008-04-23 Thread TDL
Its been a long time since I bought a video camera so I am asking this group
if anyone can recommend a decent one. Or where can I go to read about
reviews on one. I am looking for a higher end one in HD, high speed shutter,
not too bulky. I'm pretty informed with the digital SLR's but not
Camcorder's. Along the lines of the SLR's by Canon 30d-5d-1ds looking for
something betweeen a 30d and 5d :). Hope that makes sense. Thanks in

RE: [RCSE] From Sherman Knight We need your help again.

2008-04-13 Thread TDL
Sherman,

If I am reading this correctly, you want us to write a letter that reads
something similiar to:

We are asking the county to force the Soccer association to mitigate their
impacts on the current users groups and pay for the rent on a new property.
Pretty simple really. After all, the county makes all developers pay
million in mitigation fees, we just want a new piece of dirt.

Is this correct? I just want to be clear what I am asking the council
members. I am sorry your situation has not gotten any better.

Best of luck, thanks.

Sport Fans,

Many of you know that The Seattle Area Soaring Society sued the local county
over the county efforts to place more soccer fields on the field where we
fly. (60 Acres South).

Unfortunately, the judge ruled in the county's favor.

So, now we are considering an appeal. In the meantime, we are still trying
to work out a political solution. The political solution has potential, but
we need your help.

Back in 2002 we asked for letters from the soaring community. We thought we
were going to loose the field to a sewage treatment facility. The help
from you guys was nothing short of amazing and we beat the dreaded Turd
Plant.

We need that kind of help again. Below are the email addresses of the
current council members in King County. Please send in a letter. I does
not need to be a long letter, just a couple of paragraphs. It worked again
and it can work again.

The soccer association we are dealing with has an operating budget of 2.4
million with a million in the bank. All of its fields are on county
property and the association has never paid a dime in rent.In the
instant case the soccer association has stated in a declaration it wants the
additional field space so it can put on larger tournaments so it can make
more money. Amazing.

Please do not be afraid to spread this post around to other list serves.
The more the better. Some will want to know how much time do we have?
Well, about a week. Our goal is 1400 letters. Every single letter makes a
difference.

Thanks in advanced for your help.

[RCSE] Help. Need Fut 8-Channel 2.4GHz Rx. Who wants to buy2.4g module 9C/9Z/8U/7U for $140 shipped.

2008-04-10 Thread TDL
Here's the deal. I need 2 of the 8ch 2.4g rx's.
Since Tower has only the $270 ($300-$30) Module and 8ch RX combo for sale
and no Module nor RX individually until who knows when, does anyone want to
buy just the module from the combo if I bought the set?

Since the RX is $130 ($140-$10) and the TX Module is $155 ($170-$15) I am
willing to pay the $130 and shipping for the RX and you pay $140 ($270-$130)
shipped for the TX module.

I'll buy the combo unit from Tower and you can paypal me the funds and I
ship the Module to you... or, if you have good feedback on RCgroups, I can
have the combo ship to you and you can ship me the RX and just paypal me
$135, that would be less $5 for shipping allowance.

Continental USA only please. Let me know if anyone is interested. Thanks.

The US F3J Team would like to thank all of our supporters and sponsors for
helping us towards our fundraising goal. My most recent budget update has
put us at 54% of the amount we need to get to Turkey. We still have a long
way to go, but we are making steady progress. I know that with the price of
gas and other expenses rising, supporting the team is a serious act of
generosity and we certainly appreciate it.

We only have about 2.5 months until the WC and I encourage those of you that
have not yet got your team merchandise and/or raffle tickets to go to the
website at http://www.usf3jteam.com and place your orders. We have some
GREAT soaring machines in the raffle, and like they say in the lottery - ya
gotta play to win...

Thanks again...

[RCSE] Mortgage rates resetting?

2008-03-28 Thread TDL
I know this is nothing to do with Sailplanes... well in a way a little bit.
If you have an adjustable mortgage that is about to reset and the bank is
advising (read scaring) you to convert to a fix, be careful. All the resets
I know are resetting at LOWER rates than what you currently have. And the
rates you will be locking in are higher. By the time you add on fees to
convert you are harming yourself financially.

If I had an ajustable rate, I would keep it cause I dont see interests going
up any time within the next 1-2 years

Just a heads up. this could svae you money and you can spend it on your
favorite hobby :). I know citi bank is notorious for this unethical
practice.

You are welcome to email me for more info and proof.

2008-03-28 Thread TDL
Having been away from the Soaring scene since last Sept, I had to treat my
symptoms with a couple new HYPERLINK http://www.F3X.COMF3X.COM Shadows.
Documenting the progress as I put her together. Laptop in the Garage using
2.4g wireless router. Will post the build on RCgoups. This in addition to
the 2 Pike Perfects I had just finish prior... well make that 2.5 Perfects.
My first Perfect died a peculiar death, only the tips and stab are
reusueable. Got replacement parts coming.

Now as if that was not enough, I have just been exposed to another
infectious disease... I think you call it F3F, been doing some reading on
it. Pretty contagiously exciting stuff. Oh yeah, life is good.

Anyway, hope we cross paths again, I could use a I Beat Gordy button, have

Just got home from soaring some in Tullahoma TN yesterday morning, and it

my Catahoula started barking her UPS bark.

Sure enough, like a message from the soaring godsit was the new ship I'd
been waiting for a few months to get.

Can't wait to get started on it! Full house fully molded, but some assembly
required as with most today.

Its all white, so I'll have to add some color to it as usual.

Totally 2.4 friendly fuse, so I'll be installing a Spektrum system in it
likely.

How about you guys? Any new planes arrive, or on their way for this season?

[RCSE] Speaking of Fuutaba...

2008-03-04 Thread TDL
One of the many really kool feature of the Futaba radio I am using is that I
can take an actual photo of my plane and load it into the Futaba's TX's
screen to give me a visual of the actual model. To date I havent tried to
fly a Pike Perfect with the Pike Superior settings. Helps a lot too when you
have a few of the same birds so you don't have to remember Pike Perfect 1,
Pike Perfect 2 etc... just glance at the Futaba screen and you will know
which model is loaded.

Now if only Futaba can make fast enough the 2.4g retrofit for the standard
MZ's it would be great. Did I mention I love the Futaba 14MZ?

2008-02-19 Thread TDL
First , thank you for the photos and videos.

I so wanted to be there at the SWC and Visalia this season.

Had it on my calendar, but life got in the way as I stayed with my 48 year
old Aunt in Peoria,IL from Oct. to Dec. 8 when she was taken from us by
cancer. She was diagnosed Late Sept. I ended up staying in IL until Feb to
give lend a habd for my uncle. So I miss out on some great contests...maybe
next year.

Anyhow, while I was there one evening my Aunt told the following story about
me to everyone.

When I was about 10 having built my first rubber powered model bought from
Kmart... Yes Kmart sold Guillows balsa kits back then. It was the P-47
thunderbolt. Never did fly though.

As having lack of funds to buy anything else, I used watered down elmers
glue to attached the tissue. But my Aunt also remembers me volunteering to
give my baby sister a haircut and using the cutoff hair, tied it to a
chopstick to make a brush to brush the glue on. Yes I too remember. My
sister was 3 years old and she would not let me use some of the pictures to
let you see the butchered job I did on her hair :)

Oh how I will miss my Aunt. I did get to spend some solid time with her as
we talked about everything from past to present to the future. I also found
out how uncaring some of her caregivers were. Especially when she tried to
make an appointment at MD Anderson in TX and was told to call back
repeatedly because everyone is gone for the weekend.

I also found out when one of her very good friend heard this she told her
husband (a retired General) who in turn called billionaire Ross Perot who
then called MD Anderson and she was in the next day. Ross is the biggest
contributor to MD. My Aunt, was a little embarrass that someone of that
stature would do that for her...Wow.

When she found out the cancer was too aggressive and there was nothing else
the doctors could do, she forgo the rest of her treatments so someone else
could take her place at the center. She never shed a tear and ironically was
the pillar of strength for everyone, right down to her last breath. And
there I sat as she took her last breath at her home.

What is so sad to me is she worked so hard all her life and was going to
sell her business and retire in 2010. To me she didn't get to enjoy her hard
work, but she told me her life has been so good that she would not change a
thing. Though she has taught me so much when I was a kid, I've learned even
much more in the last few months from her. Thanksgiving and Christmas will
never be the same.

Thanks for letting me let this out...

Tuan Le

2006-01-27 Thread TDL
I got this Space Pro a few months ago from DP.
I have not started putting it together yet need room in the house. Have a
new baby plus a few new planes.
$900 local pickup (Orange County, CA) or $975 shipped paypal.
My wife would love for me to keep it, but I can't justify paying over a
million and a half for the size of home I need to store these things... :)
Home values are crazy here...

I also have it listed on Rcgroups.

RE: [RCSE] Receiver perfrormance

2006-01-16 Thread TDL
It alsmost sounds like a drained battery the way you described the Berg and
Samba Rxs' failures. What kind of batteries you using for the RX? I had some
Bergs and thought one may have been bad, it turned out to be one cell in the
pack that didn't hold voltage. NiMh seemed more prone to problems for me.
When range checking I usually move the sticks all over and pay attention to
just the rudder. I also test with a watt meter to see current pulls and
voltage drops

I'd say most of the Rx problems are traceable to the Batt.

My .02 cents. Thanks.

Oops! Guess I better have that second cuppa joe this morning!

The Maple Leave Image 2m was on a JR R700, not a 770.

Sorry for the confusion.
