Ed, Forget about a 72MHZ module. Contact Horizon Hobbies or your local hooby shop and get a 2.4 GHZ transmitter module AND a 7000 full range receiver for just $110. Re: [RCSE] Looking for a Futaba Ch 40 module
I have two 9C Supers. One has a 2.4 GHz Spectrum module in it and 4 receivers. This handles my slope planes primarily. Over time I will migrate all to this. The other is on 72 MHz. I use both. I am not ready to replace the 12 receivers I have now on 72 MHz. I have ch 35 and 55 modules also, but all my planes are on 40, so for the cost of a channel module I can keep them flying till I migrate all to 2.4 over the next couple of years. All that I have read is that the synth modules use more power than the single channel modules. Perhaps the Futaba Synth is different. Re: [RCSE] Looking for a Futaba Ch 40 module
Ed, Its certainly true for XPS and Spectrum, and its the Spectrum I am recommending, because the deal is so good. What happens is that even though the 2.4GHZ transmits at greater power than 72MHZ, they transmit in packets and between packets the transmitter isn't sending any signal. The net effect is that the total power drain goes down. I use both XPS and Spectrum and I can see it directly on how long my transmitter batteries last. Rather sad really because he was such a character. It was typical of him that he stated in his will that he was to be buried with his Radio (fully charged) and his trusty Monarch HLG. Anyway, some few weeks later we had a seance and made contact with a strong presence that announced itself as Jim. He was always one to talk you leg off and he hadn't changed. The glass dashed madly across the board and nearly wore the letters out. The story that unfolded was astonishing and is here told and we have no way of verifying it. However here it is, in full, in Jim's own words. I have to tell you about soaring in the after life, it's certainly different. The first thing that I remember was falling down for miles into a dark pit with my Monarch and radio clutched in my hands. Eventually I came to a sudden stop in a clean white marble corridor. I was not alone for long, a chap in an Armani suit came along and spoke to me. Ah yes, Jim isn't it, welcome to our little kingdom. Where am I? Oh, there is plenty of time for curiosity, all the time you want, but to put you in your misery this is Hades. Hell! Rather an overworked image that, we prefer Hades, it's less threatening, and it rhymes better. So who are you, the Devil. There you go again, no my name is Mephistopheles, and I think that you will find it more correct, politically that is, to call him the Dark Lord, or when you get to know him Lucifer. Now come this way. We walked down this never ending corridor with white marble doors bearing notices in white paint. You know this isn't what I had in mind, it looks so clinical, cool and clean. Yes, good isn't it. We get a lot of corporate interior designers down here so we gave them a break from the Kitsch room. The Kitsch room? Of course you are new here. You see we don't go in for that fire and brimstone stuff, very old fashioned. No, we find that it is best to tailor the eternal environment to the client. So we have all of the Interior designers living in a house with flock Paisley wallpaper, plastic flowers, black vinyl covered chairs, flourescent T.V's. They wear bright nylon hawaian suits and plastic sandals, that sort of thing. That's not so bad? It is if you are an interior designer he said in an ominous tone and laughed. Look here's an interesting room, we keep all the Coke heads in here. He pushed open a door to a room stacked with white powder, mirrors, dollar bills and razor blades. Some figures were shuffling around in the distance. But you have given them everything that they want. Mephistopheles laughed. Yes, everything, absolutely everything, except. He waited expectantly for my question. Except what? Noses. Nice touch that, it was one of Lucifer's lighter moments. He closed the door and we walked on for hours. From time to time Mephistopheles would stop and open a door, it was horribly fascinating. There were Merchant Bankers trudging streets in ragged clothing with begging bowls, Heavy Metal freaks strapped to benches while Donny Osmond songs were played at 110 decibels, Nagging Neighbours in rooms whose walls were constantly being tapped, and too many more to mention now, another time perhaps. By now I was getting the idea of how the system worked and I was getting worried. We had reached the end of the corridor and were walking through a cave. Oh Jim, just ignore the decor around here, we haven't modernised it yet. What are these pits? Nothing very special, we call it the Bunyan section, it's so corny now. You see here, this one is for good intentions, that one up ahead, the huge one, is full of politicians promises. That one ahead is full of advertisers lies. We've already passed the pit of adulteries, quite an amusing one that, perhaps my favourite. You see that pile over there, Golf balls, the minor demons have great fun stealing them, childish really. We were passing the pit of politicians lies and Mephistopheles dragged his hand through the slimy surface. He stopped and held up several strips

Re: [RCSE] New RCSE
Bon voyage, RCSE! I'm surprised that a Windows NT box made it this far, to tell you the truth. I'm surprised I haven't heard more griping, but it's like most of us on the RCSE knew that it was going to come down at some point. It had a good run and definitely kept me close to the hobby when my focus shifted elsewhere during the off season. But now we've got some new-fangled options out there. RCGroups, this ModelAircraftNews site, and the Google Group created by Dennis Hoyle. I understand al ot of the complaints about RCGroups. I myself don't check in on it as much as I should - and for good reason. It's a discussion based site, and cannot be used like the RCSE. People check RCGroups at their leisure while the RCSE gets sent directly to you. It's pull versus push, and the PUSH of the RCSE keeps people reading it. RCGroups excels when it comes to focused discussions on topics, and not news and notifications. But now, the MAN and Google Groups systems give us the option to continue that conversation, but with a few new gee-gaws and gadgets, like uploading media files and creating pages. Excellent opportunities that I think might get used quite a bit. But which to use? No disrespect to ModelAirplaneNews, but my choice is definitely Google Groups, and here's why: 1. It's more accessible - Easier to use - Easier to post to (via email or web) - Easier to read - I can either get it via email, the web or plug it into a news reader like the Google Reader that I already use. - Maintains that simple push style that drops the emails in my mailbox, and I don't have to check it constantly. 2. It's Google - It's not going away any time soon - It will be constantly upgraded Obviously, I'll follow whereever most people go, but I'd prefer Google :) Dennis wrote: I took it upon myself to create this Google Group to replace the soon to disappear RCSE. Re: [RCSE] New RCSE
And there is soaring at yahoogroups.com which has been carrying this lists traffic for sometime. Since there are already 1383 members to that list and it already carried this lists traffic, it would seem a more natural migration. It offers both email push for those of us that like that as well as a web interface. It would be my choice over RCgroups, MAN and google groups (which seems to require a gmail address). On 26-Aug-08, at 9:45 AM, Ben Wilson wrote: Bon voyage, RCSE! Jim, I'm trying to remember when I might have to dig up my old MAN Soaring Columns or ESL newsletters to see if I can find some kind of date. RE: [RCSE] Removing old covering
Craig; You haven't specified what type of covering it is. If it is Monokote I've been through this procedure many times before. 1) I start off by stripping off as much of the covering by hand. 2) Using a #11 exacto I pick as much as I can being careful not to gouge the wood underneath. 3) Any stubborn areas I simply sand off with 100 grit dry. Kurt From: Craig Allen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, August 18, 2008 10:02 AM To: soaring@airage.com Subject: [RCSE] Removing old covering I have some 40 year old covering to remove. RE: [RCSE] Removing old covering, more info
Dope based?? could be silk-span.Find yourself a container of dope thinners to start. You will find that any dope-based finish be it silk-span, tissue or silk can be stripped quite easily. The previous post works for the most part. You should be able to soften any stubborn areas with the dope thinners. I will admit that I spend a fair amount of time on RCGroups, and the pics and all are great. There is a lot of gobbledygook there just like there has been the same here, I guess it is just the web and the fact that folks can say about anything and they do, like some of our favorite filers have done here. Re: [RCSE] In Memory of RCSE
Sorry to hear that RCSE is ending soon. RCSE is the ONLY reason I still subscribe to Model Airplane News. I feel that was the least I could do for giving us RCSE. My oldest issue of MAN is dated 1947 and I still have most issues since then. It has been many years since MAN has had anything of interest to me so I will not renew my subscription when it expires. MAN has been slicking up and dumbing down for years until it has sunk to little more than a picture magazine. When I need something to read, I go to the attic and bring down a few issues of MAN, Model Builder, RCM, or Air Trails to read. They are a lot more interesting than anything published today. Model Builder was the last really interesting model magazine. Chuck At 04:15 PM 8/25/2008, you wrote: The time is now for the end of RCSE. Although I suppose it had to happen. I still have a file of old flame wars, name-calling, and disputes, but reading them now, it seems sort of gratuitous to re-post any. However, here's one classic. Sal posted a gripe about Karlton in which he spelled the latter's name as Charlatan. When Karlton objected, Sal said it was an innocent mistake: ...my spell checker didn't recognize Karlton and changed it, and I didn't notice...
Re: [RCSE] In Memory of RCSE
Ryan, here is the post from Dave Jones. _ The Shaggy Thermal Some time ago one of our flying friends, Jim, died. He stopped and held up several strips of decaying paper. I read them quickly; Peace in our time, Watch my lips, Full Employment, The Triumph of the Proletariat. He tossed them carelessly back into the pit. Up ahead the light flickered, we were entering Lucifer's office, to the right was a huge flaming pit, something else that hadn't been modernised. I would advise you to be polite, he can get nasty. Sure, anything you say. Imagine my surprise when I was walked up to a table and sitting there was the Dark Lord dressed like a Tax Inspector. Next case.

I have been following the adventures of the DS experts on RC Groups, and this story fills a lot of the blanks that I was wondering about. The design and construction of these planes is just magnificent (and so is the fact that they fly faster than 300 mph). Us thermal guys could get a lot of inspiration from the great work that Messrs Seim, Lisenby, Lilly, Manor and others are doing.
Re: [RCSE] 6 volt battery for retreiver
If you're getting a new retriever,or changing the motor, it seems like a 12V wind is in order. I wonder if there isn't a way to play with the existing windings to accomplish the same thing. On a slightly related topic, I've discovered that for winding line onto the winch at a reasonable speed, at least on a 12V wind, a battery charger is nice and slow. Since the charger is probably current limited, it might work for the usual 6V wind as well. To tell the truth I don't recall which setting on the charger I used, 2 amp or 10 amp at 12V, or the 6V setting. Probably if you lay out hundreds of yards of line in the grass it won't have enough oomph. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] 6 volt battery for retreiver
Hi Jim - what I did for my Rahm retriever is get 2 big honking diodes from the surplus store and put them in series with the power line. This cuts the voltage down so the retriever runs nice on 12v. There are also cheaper alternatives, I think on RCGroups there was a discussion about using a home made resistor to do the same thing. All it was was a bottle with some lower gauge wire in it filled with water as a heat sink run inline with the power line. I hated getting and maintaining a separate 6v battery, plus if you used it up, there are generally no spares just laying around. I can give you pics of my setup if you want. Re: [RCSE] 6 V battery for retreiver
Go to an auto part store and ask for golf cart batteries. We ran Rahm retrievers for years on these batteries. you also need a charger that will do 6 volts. The battery does not need to be very large. About half the size of the 12 volt battery for the winch. The retriever is under much less load and the smaller 6 v retriever battery would out last two batteries pulling the winch. I might try nail polish remover, as it has some MEK, which like acetone, works but is less volatile and may contain some nitromethane. You might try methylene chloride or chloroform. I do not thin isopropyl alcohol will work, but perhaps some mineral spirits. Do remember that if there is any foam, then all this stuff is useless. I have a Friend who works alot with nitrate dope and tissue who I will try to contact for more info. He is a free flighter from 40 years ago! Skyloft was a nylon mat material that looked a lot like silkspan but was much stronger. It was applied with dope just like silkspan. I used it to cover several RC pattern models between 1969 and 1974 and even covered a free flight wing with skyloft. If you crashed a built up model covered with skyloft, you never needed a trash bag for the parts after a crash. The skyloft served quite well to contain the parts. :) Chuck RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Sheiiish, here we go. I was not referring to acetone. I was pointing at the chlorinated hydrocarbons (methylene chloride or chloroform) and nitromethane. These can be bad actors. Simply because you've used a lot of stuff in the past that we now know is evil and you are still alive doesn't mean it's safe. As chair of the department safety committee I've learned to be anal about certain things. If you smoke tobacco forget everything I've mentioned above, it's already too late. If you don't smoke, have used all those evil chemicals and are still alive, don't think you're getting off free. Do you still have all your hair? Do you hit every one of your landings? Can you sleep 12 hours without having to get up to pee? If you can't answer YES to each of those questions, all those chemicals are getting to you! Re: [RCSE] Removing old covering, more info
What worked for me was a combination of sanding/buffing discs on a Dremel tool. Friction did cause some monokote color to meld into the surface of the wood, but I was using opaque for the refinish, so it didn't matter in my case. Instead of caustic chems, I have a theory: consider a heavy glove and a chunk of dry ice from the local ice cream shop or megamart. Try rubbing the chunk of dry ice on the edges of the covering. In theory, it should cause the mylar and glue to contract, embrittle, and crack off, the wood should shrug it off, and the glue joints will likely hold if not directly touched. It would look like you would need to use the switch to reverse the polarity of the brushes in the two switch positions. A little surgery will be needed but it is doable. Timing may be an issue but you should only see reduced torque in the nonstock polarity. RE: [RCSE] Several DLG questions
Dan, Many of your questions have answers and much more info on RCgroups.com on the Handlaunch forums. See:http://www.rcgroups.com/hand-launch-96/ As for the other questions, most are using composite winged planes because of their stiffness, airfoil accuracy, and ease of building. There are many built up plane kits out there, of which the DL50 is nice. there are build logs for it as well as others Whig you might find helpful. As for the separate rudder and elevator, sub-rudders assist with reducing boom bending, hence building a rudder and not having to split it for an elevator is nice. As for elevators, again, you have a much lighter and stronger structure. However, one of the best real reasons is transporting the plane. You can remove the elevator and the fuse then lies flat in a box, or whatever. The tailfeathers are quite light and delicate, so this prevent hanger rash! As for aerodynamics, you still have the intersections of the surfaces, so drag is not really that much different. In some cases you can uses an all moving stab, and that helps with obtaining the best incidence for launching and thermaling. There are other reasons, so again, I invite you to look at RCgroups, and you can pour through all the old posts and questions. There are lots of pictures, so that helps alot too. Chris Original Message Subject: [RCSE] Several DLG questions From: Dan Ashenfelter [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tue, August 12, 2008 5:00 pm To: soaring@airage.com Gentlemen: Before flying season fades into the sunset, I would like to build a DLG. At this point in my life I have more time than money, so I am looking at a built-up entry level kit rather than spending $300+ for an ARF or a high-performance kit. I have been researching quite a bit over the last several days, and the conventional built-up kit selection is rather sparse. Right now, the most likely candidates are the QF2 from Mountain Models and the Gambler AF from Wright Brothers RC. I have also considered the relatively low cost ARF Apache from SoaringUSA.com As I researched built-up DLG's it seemed that most of them were 50 span or less rather than the usual 1.5m span that dominates the higher end models. Is this for structural integrity or mostly for personal convenience/choice? As a novice DLG flyer should I look toward shorter span models or stick with the 1.5m ships? I am also curious to understand why the vertical and horizontal tail surfaces are separated on most DLG's. Aerodynamically I know that fewer intersections helps with drag, but are there other reasons for doing so? I have been flying r/c for 36+ years so I am not a novice to model flight but DLG is a whole new world for me. If anyone on the exchange has experience with the models named above (or similar kits) or can offer a novice DLG pilot some practical advise on span choice, Rudder/Elevator vs Rudder/Aileron/Elevator, polyhedral vs dihedral models or any other area that might prove helpful, I would be very grateful. Re: [RCSE] (No subject header)
In a FLS each field coil is in series with a brush set. The power goes through the field coil and into the positive brush, through the armature and then is grounded on the negative brush which is 90 degrees to the positive brush. If you disconnect the brushes from the field coil and have a switch to reverse polarity of each brush set it will reverse the motor. It is a lot of work but it is doable. It would also require the switch to carry the full current of the motor. Maybe you could use a switch to control a DPDT relay that can handle the current it takes to run the motor. Personally I was bouncing around in the upper group after, hitting a very poor landing earlier in the day, knowing my fate was sealed. I was calling air for Cody in the previous flight group, my back to the winch launch line, when I heard a very high speed flutter by some competitor on launch in the next group. I turned, expecting to see a model that I had seen flutter numerous times, and much to my surprise...it was a Pike Perfect...and Peter Goldsmith was piloting. I said to Cody I think he just fluttered an elevator...yep...I see flaps going in and out. And this was a National Championship flight, last round, and Peter was sniffing around a top spot. It's the last round thing which all competitors know all to well. The air was no gimme, with 30% of the flight times not being achieved. After Cody landed I said, I've got to watch this. This appears to be a REAL championship flight! Pilots in Peters group were not happy, many falling out, yet here he was and his PERFECT ...appearing to be guiding this object...barely in control...flaps going in, flaps going out...oddly circling..appering to have half flap in all the time...you know...no elevator, hunting, falling, rising...maybe 5%-10% control! No one on the ground knew what was really wrong he had actually blown out on the over zealous launch and was hitting a well timed thermal, the elevator servo, and BOTH aileron servos... yet I heard the beep, beep, beep of Peters digital trims being pushed to the max, trying to urge the PERFECT to do its job. So here was the PERFECT, coming up to 9 minutes...all other competitors in his group had fallen from the sky, and Goldsmith was inventing a new class...F.R.FLAP RUDDER! And getting his time! Then it appeared there was trouble as the model kind of started galloping around the sky below 100 feet, trying to set up for landing, the controlling became more difficult...that ground thing appearing in its future, spot landing, all coming into play. Flap rudder has its limitations! No he didn't get his landing, BUT he DID land within the field boundaries, overflying the slot by 25 seconds (10:25) and qualifying the flight. Amazingly, we later found out, had WON the group! Most others would have tried to land the injured bird, and probably crashed it, but Peter hung tough, literally a National Championship position on the line, his years of aerobatic training coming into to play. As our modern day computer mixing radios were not up to the task, it was in his thumbs, his mind, and his judgment that was getting the job done. Yes, I know Daryl had a wild one with a blown out stab flapping in the breeze at the Worlds, but at least there was some assemblance of order...all servos were working! This flight secured his 3rd place overall National finish, and will be a flight remembered by all who witnessed it for a long time. When we looked over the PERFECT on the ground, the culprit was a nylon geared elevator servo that had stripped from launch pressure...the elevator kinda flopping around, and then noticing that even the control horns on the aileron servos were broken and floppingYes this was a National Championship flight. Peter was giddy after the flight, also stunned and amazed at what had just occurred. We stood there dumbfounded, looking at his wounded PERFECT, basically agreeing this can't fly. He won 3rd overall...AMAZING!!! I just had a moment to reflect on this Championship flight! Well done Peter! Re: [RCSE] US Nationals Championship Flight
Great story Skip. Thanks for sharing. Re: [RCSE] Re: I have a Challenge for JR/Spectrum DSM Radios!..reply
Jack, I am interested, as well. the 4K has it over anything, even the 3030. it scares me a little to scab futuba equipment on the the mpx base, I suppose that electrons are just electrons. Its a shame that Hi-tech can not see the forest, I am flying a JR 9303, and am reasonably satisfied with it, on 72, HAve you talked to ernie about a total conversion to 2.4 to deal with any latency? Before you ask, it will be a long time in coming as it is just a hobby design/build at this time. If any of you serious coders out there want a crack at coding the OP system, we are looking for your talent. It will probably start out as a kit build with completed boards and a new case (like a pizza box but smaller). It will do all the 4K will do and more but the programming logic will probably remain the same, ie. no need for templates and you assign what you want where you want it. I have two 4K's and just converted one to 2.4 using a Spektrum Futaba module (several have done this before and it seems to work fine so far). I used the 2.4 in Nostalgia at the Nat's this year and it performed just fine as far away as I could ever want to fly. I will add a couple of more planes to the 2.4 that are not serious moldies and build confidence slowly. No I do not know about the increased latency yet because a Paragon would not be a good test but it seems to be flying the same as before, like a Paragon. It ain't for everyone. AERF sailplanes have far simplier radio requirements. I just came back from flying in Europe. The top scale sailplane guys there are moving over to Futaba FX-30 and FX-40 radios as they are the only 14 channel radios around, feature the closest thing to MPX open programming and the 2.4 implementation does not require the kluge of multiple receivers.
