For me it doesn't seem to have solved it!? If I re-insert the card, it
doesn't recognize any bootdevice. And yes, I already have the i-firmware
loaded.

Hypercom should work, but try and do it with cu and lsx just in case
there is some strange issue with hypercom. I have done a half dozen

The pata_amd module will do ok, except:

 - the CS5536 register values are not the same as those found on
AMD74xx/8111. So timings are slightly off.

 - cable detection doesn't work

I'm waiting for AMD to decide whether they prefer the MSR or the PCI
version before pata_cs5536 goes upstream.

For now the belt-and-suspenders approach would be to use the patch
above. I'd do that for a production system for sure. Is it going to
make a significant difference on a net5501 tinker toy with a single
PATA drive? Probably not...

Thanks for explanation! I had completely forgotten about the
ATA_STATIC_ID option in the kernel. Getting rid of it for sites
where I just have the flash will make configuration easier as I dont
have to worry now about the ad0/ad1 issue.

Ideally it would be controlled by the bios-settings, but some CF cards
will only sample the master/slave pin on power-on and not on resets,
and they tend to be either always master or slave, depending on the
state of that pin at power-on.

What would be the best approach now for a linux 2.6.22 system ?

- use the pata_amd module

   OR

- patch the kernel with:
  http://mkp.net/code/pata_cs5536/cs5536-20071005-msr.patch
  and use the pata_cs5536 module

So far so good! The image I built yesterday on the Lexar that could
not mount its root partition seems to be working just fine now!

I can also boot a RELENG_6 kernel, with the driver patches that phk
has committed to FreeBSD current
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/sys/dev/ata/ata-chipset.c.diff?r1=1.199;r2=1.200;sortby=date

and I can boot FreeBSD Current now on the Lexar flash where as that
didnt work before.

The only mystery remaining is that FreeBSD 6.x sees this flash as
ad1, but FreeBSD current sees it as ad0. Its not a big deal, but it
can be a headache as there does not seem to be any
consistency. However, this last bit is perhaps more of a FreeBSD thing.

ad0: 489MB at ata0-slave PIO4
ata0: on atapci0
ata0: [ITHREAD]
ata1: on atapci0
ata1: [ITHREAD]
ad0: 489MB at ata0-slave PIO4

Re: [Soekris] net5501 BIOS Update

2007-10-05 Thread Joao Pedras
Downgraded the bios to 1.32d on this particular 5501 and the problems
still occur:

#1 - "MII without any phy!" in all vr interfaces; same CF (SiliconDrive
CF SSD-C01G-3550) on other 5501's (1.32d) will work fine; I can't say if
the problem occurred before the upgrade to 1.32h since this 5501 wasn't
in use.

#2 - the box won't boot off a SanDisk 512Mb; it takes a few seconds to
probe and then it won't boot off of it (sequence is 80 81 F0 FF);
this same SanDisk 512 will boot other 5501's (only tried with 1.32d);
this box will boot off the above mentioned SiliconDrive CF. Both CFs
have same OS image (day-old FBSD6.2-STABLE)

#3 - somebody had mentioned some CFs showing up as ad0 and ad1; The
other 5501 where these flashes boot, will show the SanDisk as ad0,
whereas when booted off the SiliconDrive CF, ad1.

Not sure if some/all pertains to your BIOS update but I would welcome
your input about these issues.

Thanks.

 Hi,
Unfortunately, I still see the soft reboot issue on FreeBSD.
e.g. from the bootloader prompt, if I try to reboot, the box will
 hang and never reboot

Nothing fancy about my bios settings, other than the speed is set to 9600

I tried this patch on RELENG_6 and it doesnt work for all flash
cards. It seems it has something to do with whether or not the flash
is detected as ad0 or ad1. If I use a lexar flash, it always comes
up as ad1 on RELENG_6. The same flash on CURRENT however, comes up
as ad0. But it does not work. If I use a SANDISK which comes up as
ad0 on RELENG_6 and ad0 on CURRENT, your patch works on CURRENT and I can boot.

Also the box still hangs if I type "reboot" from the loader
prompt. Actually, if I type a bit (e.g. pause it, do an ls) and then
wait a few seconds, the box will hang.

 ---Mike

Trying to type in boot -v from the loader prompt gets hung up at
OK boot -v

I don't think so ... I'm running 6.2 as well and no issues after the upgrade :-)

Re: [Soekris] net5501 BIOS Update

2007-10-04 Thread solar

Resolved IDE HD reboot problems for me on my Net5501s (OpenBSD4.1) - thanks!
:

wd0 at pciide0 channel 0 drive 0:
wd0: 16-sector PIO, LBA48, 95396MB, 195371568 sectors
wd1 at pciide0 channel 0 drive 1:
wd1: 1-sector PIO, LBA, 3871MB, 7928928 sectors
wd0(pciide0:0:0): using PIO mode 4, Ultra-DMA mode 2
wd1(pciide0:0:1): using PIO mode 4, DMA mode 2

One curiousity. On another 5501 I have, but with a different type of 4Gb CF
to above, it was not detected post upgrade:

Boot at 1.32:
Pri Mas HTE721010G9AT00 LBA Xlt 1024-255-63 97 Gbyte
Pri Sla LEXAR ATA FLASH LBA Xlt 994-128-63 4009 Mbyte

First reboot at 1.32h:
Pri Mas HTE721010G9AT00 LBA Xlt 1024-255-63 97 Gbyte
Pri Sla @AF@

Then gets stuck.
Subsequently, reboot works fine but Pri Slave is simply not listed.

Not a big deal for me as the CF cards are coming out, but thought it might
be worth mentioning.

All the best.

With the patch below, mode 5 works fine on NetBSD as well. Filed as
kern/37059.

Check the device driver. I've seen it do UDMA5 under FreeBSD with
this patch (currently in the release-engineers queue):

Hi,
Unfortunately, I still see the soft reboot issue on FreeBSD.
e.g. from the bootloader prompt, if I try to reboot, the box will
hang and never reboot

Nothing fancy about my bios settings, other than the speed is set to 9600

There might still be issues with Ultra-DMA detect/setting, I would be
happy to get a few success/failure reports, just email me directly.

Under NetBSD -current, the controller reports Ultra-DMA mode 4
capability, the drive I have is Ultra-DMA mode 5 and they end up
communicating at Ultra 4. Looks OK, if Ultra-DMA mode 4 (Ultra/66) is
actually the top speed of the controller.

Hi Everybody,

For the record, the warm boot issues has not been fixed yet, it's still
there and probably also affect SATA drives.

But that issue is next on my list and will be fixed soon.

Randy,

I installed the new BIOS as well this morning to test if the reboot problem
might have been addressed. I'm using the UltraDMA-100 i/f for my HD and it
still won't recognize the drive on a warm reboot; a hard reset is still
required to boot from the HD.

i have a TOSHIBA MK1637GSX DL021A and it is recognized and boots and runs.

but i have noticed that, when i issue a reboot, it is not recognized. i
have to power cycle or hard reset. i am not sure of this, as i need to
test it a half dozen times. when i get the new build/installworld done,
i will do so. this puppy is not a fast builder :).

Super

I am one of those that have a disk that isn't recognized
and just to confirm, it still doesn't work - but I upgraded
anyway.

From 1.31m to 1.32d - no problems and certainly no worse :-)

Hi Soren,

Thanks for the update. Is there a list somewhere with the issues that
have been acknowledged by you and that are being worked on? Something
