Re: Forcing Order of firing of events in soft

2012-09-06 Thread Stephen Blair
I did a quick test with some OnBeginCommand events (2013 SP1 only)

The events were triggered in the order they were registered.
So, the order depended on
- order of RegisterEvent calls (alpha order of event names did not matter,
I tested that)
- location of plugin (User plugins loaded before Workgroup)
- order of workgroups (they should be loaded in the order they are
listed...I didn't test with multiple workgroups)
- name of plugins in a given location ( "A_Event.py" was loaded before
"X_Event.py")

I wouldn't necessarily call this conclusive, but it was suggestive...

Re: Pyton 2.7 and Softimage?

2012-09-06 Thread Stephen Blair
Hi Francois

The bug (some sort of memory leak with named objects like XSIMath being
added into the scripting engine) was related to the version of pywin.
That's why we--oops--they, settled on 2.5 and 212.

https://groups.google.com/d/topic/xsi_list/hnOTjF3JBsU/discussion

I've used 2.7, but that was only for day-to-day support work.

Hi

I want to thank you all for your support and kind words. Last week started
with such a low on Monday morning when I got the news, yet ended on Friday
with such a boost to my confidence and outlook :-)

As I mentioned before, the blog will stay up. And I'll keep posting when I
can, at least for awhile or until I find another job...after 20 months with
just one missed day (when my login expired after I clicked Publish on my
way out the door), it's hard to give up the habit.

Hi Rob

The blog will stay up.
xsisupport.wordpress.com is of course a free blog.
And I renewed xsisupport.com the next year (and also the No Ads upgrade).

Re: Small Annoying Things

2012-08-30 Thread Stephen Blair
On Linux, you have to use the Python that comes with Softimage. You cannot
use the external Python. It is because of pywin32 (Softimage provides it).

Re: Python/pywin constants broken?

2012-08-30 Thread Stephen Blair
Hi

iirc, the constants are defined in the gen_py cache:
C:\Python26\Lib\site-packages\win32com\gen_py

You can force it to regenerate by deleting the gen_py folder. But if you
reinstalled, wouldn't that have zapped the cache anyways?

Yes, the preference is still off after restarting.

But I think I have a good lead on the problem though: late in the day yesterday
I found that the problematic machines don't have pywin installed! Kaching! I'll
be the first to admit I need a tutorial or something explaining the
relationship between Python, pywin, and Softimage. Installing pywin locally
fixes the problem and Softimage correctly uses the system Python.

Now here's my next question: do I really have to install pywin locally on each
machine, or can I not install it in our network's site-packages?

I have a situation where several of our machines refuse to use the system
Python (2.7.3 64-bit). I uncheck the 'Use Python installed with Softimage'
option, but after restarting, Softimage insists on using its own Python
(2.6.4). Runonce.bat seems to have to effect.

Of course, the machine I use is fine, so testing this is a pain...

Any insight into why Soft would refuse to use the system Python (which again is
2.7.3 64-bit, site-wide). It's jacking up our PyQt experience.

(2.6.4). Runonce.bat seems to have to effect.

Of course, the machine I use is fine, so testing this is a pain...

Any insight into why Soft would refuse to use the system Python (which again is
2.7.3 64-bit, site-wide). It's jacking up our PyQt experience.

Well, for grins and giggles I installed Windows 8 RTM on my laptop. Softimage
2013 SP1 runs ok from what I can see. There's some interface weirdness, such
as the top menu bar is pure white and "Softimage 2013...etc etc." is
centered at the top of the screen instead of on the left. I loaded a FaceRobot
demo scene & it seemed fine - then I loaded a CrowdFX demo & it too was ok.
But I then noticed no matter how many times I reset my layout to Default, when
I opened another scene it went back to the FaceRobot layout.

Anyway, in my very limited test it seemed to be ok.

I probably won't chance it with my main machine for a while though.

Yes. I was referring to how preferences are only saved on a successful clean

Therefore, if you crash, your changes aren't saved. (I do believe there is a

and If I see another "Context Mismatch:

Did you try to delete the simulated ICETree and then re-generate all the

It would re-create a new simulated ICETree and so could fix the problem (but

I've got a bunch of cubes (cube, cube1, ..., cube5).
They all have a custom property named "MyProperty"

If I run this in Softimage 2012 SAP, I get a [multi] : [multi] PPG

Application.InspectObj( "*.MyProperty" )

If I edit the parameters, the edits are applied to all the custom properties
eg

Application.SetValue("cube.MyProperty.Param,cube1.MyProperty.Param,cube2.MyProperty.Param,cube3.MyProperty.Param,cube4.MyProperty.Param,cube5.MyProperty.Param",
 [13, 13, 13, 13, 13, 13], "")

Application.SetValue("cube.MyProperty.Param1,cube1.MyProperty.Param1,cube2.MyProperty.Param1,cube3.MyProperty.Param1,cube4.MyProperty.Param1,cube5.MyProperty.Param1",
[False, False, False, False, False, False], "")

Application.SetValue("cube.MyProperty.Param2_R,cube1.MyProperty.Param2_R,cube2.MyProperty.Param2_R,cube3.MyProperty.Param2_R,cube4.MyProperty.Param2_R,cube5.MyProperty.Param2_R",
 [0.513, 0.513, 0.513, 0.513, 0.513, 0.513], "")

I tried that, but it lists all the various objects parameters as seperate
parameters. I don't have a one parameter controls all type behaviour that I'm
looking for. I'm in SI2012sap though, so maybe it's a behavior that has changed
in 2013? Anyway, it's not the end of the world. I'll just select the various
objects and they can themselves inspect it using the right tab selection menu.
I was just wondering if I could automate that part, but I can't seem to make it
work.

RE: setting references in set data compound, python

2012-07-27 Thread Stephen Blair

I was looking into this back in January.
In Jscript, here's what I came up with...I remember that sometimes it failed,
that's why I had the try catch...

In the end it seemed easier to just use SetValue, sorry.

try
{
var oSetData = AddICECompoundNode("Set Data", oIceTree);
var oPorts = VBArray(oSetData.ExposedPorts).toArray();
var oSetOneData = oPorts[0](0).Parent;
oSetOneData.Parameters("Reference").Value = "self.__PointInVolumeFlag";
ConnectICENodes( oSetData.InputPorts( "Value" ),
oPointInVolumeNode.OutputPorts( "result" ) );
}
catch(e)
{
LogMessage( e.description );
SetValue( oSetData.FullName + ".Reference", "self.__PointInVolumeFlag",
null);
ConnectICENodes( oSetData.FullName + ".Value",
oPointInVolumeNode.FullName + ".result");
}

hey list,
i cant figure out how to set the references of set data nodes.
this wont work:

setter0 = Application.AddICECompoundNode('Set Data', oTree)
setter0.InputPorts(1).Value = 'this.tmp'
or
setter0.Value = 'this.tmp'
or
setter0.Parameters('reference').Value = 'this.tmp'

i refuse to use a command for that . . .

Subject: ICE self-referential array building, without a loop?

Hey guys,

At the risk of looking stupid, I'm wondering if anyone knows a cool way of
procedurally generating an array from a given length that results in:
#0: 1
#1: 10
#2: 100
#3: 1000
#4: 1
#5: ...
and so on.

The reason I used the term "self-referential" is because with a repeat/while
loop I can generate easily with an "algorithm"
referencing the previous item in its own array, like so:
10*(#0)=(#1) = 10*1=10
10*(#1)=(#2) = 10*10=100
10*(#2)=(#3) = 10*100=1000
10*(#3)=(#4) = 10*1000=1
I suppose it could also be called "recursive", somewhat.

Seems to me there must be a simpler way to do this without a loop, right? Maybe
more coffee is the answer...

Any clues appreciated.
Cheers,

How about muting the Simulate Bullet Rigid Bodies based on the condition you
were feeding into the If?

And yes, I got the same thing with an If node.
I event tried plugging in a second, muted Simulate Bullet Rigid Bodies node
into the False port

Subject: "Simulate Bullet Rigid Bodies" evaluates even when condition is False?!

Hey guys,

It would appear that even when I have an If node presumably preventing
executation of "Simulate Bullet Rigid Bodies", it STILL EVALUATES. :o

Ever seen this happen? I'm trying to disable it when I don't need it. I even
tried setting particles as passive RBDs but they still react and stuff. I need
them to stay still until a given frame.

Everything else in my If node respects the condition, except the sim rbds node.
:(

Any help appreciated.
Cheers,

red nodes inside.. it just appears not to work... so I think
Christian mentions in another thread how to build a random array by

'To get a random integer array, you plug an array (e.g. via the Build
Index Array node) into the ID port of the Random Value node'

but whatever I do with this I always get a context mismatch when
trying to connect this to anything - it is always expecting 'per

So the question remains, is it possible to randomly extrude polygons

Yeah I was surprised a bit to see 2005 listed as recommended...It does say that
you can use 2008.

I'm sure the dev team switched to 2008 back in Sept 2009.

If you compile you app with the same Visual C++ version as XSI, for
example Visual C++ 2010, then printf() will output to the history log,
from any thread. This is how mental ray's log output ends up there.
You'll only see that happening if you compile in Release mode. If you
compile your plug-in in debug mode or with another version of VC++,

The Softimage FBX plugin is a separate codebase that ships with Crosswalk.
Softimage 2013 SP1 includes the [current verson of the] Crosswalk DLLs.

Does ne1 know as to why there is no Softimage plugin for download? Is it

RE: workgroup access collisions - xsibatch displays graphical MessageBox waiting for user input...

2012-06-22 Thread Stephen Blair
Hi Martin

Yes, this has been reported and logged before.
I repro it simply by starting many xsibatch sessions, eventually you'll get an
Unable to access error.
It could be for a compound, or for a toolbar, or some other file.

I'll log it again to bump it back up. At the very least, xsibatch should not
display a message requiring use interaction.

Subject: workgroup access collisions - xsibatch displays graphical MessageBox
waiting for user input...

Hi List, hi Support,

we are experiencing a bit of an annoying issue regarding access collisions on
workgroups.

Bear with me - it'll take a few lines to explain:

When a workgroup is loaded (or refreshed from within an open Softimage session)
its subdirectories get scanned and all self-installing plugins, shaders and ICE
compounds get registered accordingly.

During this scan Softimage will take over exclusive access for every ICE
compound in /Data/Compounds. It will do this by creating a .lock file (e.g.
MyCompound.xsicompound.lock) to prevent collisions.

Under normal circumstances this lock file will be deleted straight after file
scan and this lock should only be present for a veeery short time ( < 1ms or
so...).

However if a second session of Softimage tries to access a locked compound the
user will get prompted by a messageBox that the compound is not accessible. He
can then choose to ignore it and proceed.

Through a series of VERY annoying circumnstances (dont't get me started... )
these workgroup scans are quite slow on our side right now resulting in quite a
few collisions on a regular basis.

And here's our problem: Even an xsibatch session () will display the same
UI messagebox and will wait until eternity for a user to interact with it. (see
attached screenshot)
This is on our blades running Windows XP 64 (yeah, I know...)

In my humble opinion this is a bug and should be solved - a headless command
line application such as xsibatch should NEVER popup graphical messageboxes and
wait for user interaction...

To make matters worse a xsibatch process controlled through a Renderfarm
management software that exists as a windows service will not even display the
bloody messagebox (as windows services cannot have desktop UI interaction).
Instead the process will sit there forever with 0% CPU load waiting for a mouse
klick.

Just a heads up to any other poor souls out there that might have experienced
this as well...

And please, if anybody from Autdoesk is still reading: I'd love to get feedback
if you can repro and fix this. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Martin

--- REPRO STEPS: ---
(Softimage 2012 SAP x64 @ Windows XP 64 [latest Service Packs and patches] )

1.) link a workgroup containing an .xsicompound file in /Data/Compounds
2.) close Softimage
3.) manually create a lock file and make sure the file handle is kept open
... thereby simulating the collision.
(I did this using a few lines of python code in a shell (attached to this
mail - please rename to 'lockFile.py' ))

--> you should now have two files in /Data/Compounds:

myWickedCompound.xsicompound
myWickedCompound.xsicompound.lock

4.) Try to delete the lock file by hand in the Windows Explorer
--> this should NOT work as the file handle is still in use.

5.) Now start an xsibatch session - simply executing 'xsibatch' in a softimage
shell without arguments should be enough.

6.) There you are - after a few secs you will be get the graphical MessageBox
waiting for a mouse klick
(at least on Windows XP 64)

RE: Issue using Select Case with Clone Point

2012-06-20 Thread Stephen Blair
Hi

Select Case is documented as supporting execution ports
"This node [Select Case] also works with execution ports: in that case the port
executed is selected based on the value of the condition."

For example, Select Case works with Set Data nodes.

RE: Issue using Select Case with Clone Point

2012-06-20 Thread Stephen Blair
Yes, I confirm that.
If you have two cases in a row with Clone Point, Select Case executes just the
first case.

If you stick something else in between, like a Set Data, then you get both
Clone Points executed...so I tried to trick ICE by multiplying the condition
value by 2, but that didn't work.

I've just run into an interesting limitation while trying to use Select Case in
conjunction with Clone Point.

The attached image should explain everything. The branch with all the 'if'
nodes works as expected but the Select Case node only executes Case0.

Not a biggie in this instance as I'll only need a few cases but I just thought
I'd share.

Trying to execute the SetValue command manually gives an overflow error.

Setting to 0.001001 doesn't cause the error though, so it's not a parser
error skipping the last digit.. odd.

I found that modifying C3DSplitEdgeOp.spdl so the ratioedgerange was clamped to
0.002 avoided the problem (0.0011 and smaller numbers didn't work for me,
didn't try to converge on the smallest usable value - the ui only shows 3
digits so 0.002 might be the limit).

Oddly I found if moving the mouse quickly, it would still show 0.001 with the
new clamping and the actual point location was nowhere near 0.001 - pic here:

Stephen, I tried your random array and it seems to be working somewhat. I'm
definitely getting a set of index values that I need. Although, the extrusions
are all going the same direction even when I use Apply Extrude Polygon Along
Axis instead of Extrude Polygon island. Why would the integer array affect the
extrude direction?

Hi

Did you try installing the local help?
http://images.autodesk.com/adsk/files/softimage-2013-sdk-doc.zip

I tried it in Firefox and the search works a lot better, if you ask me.
The offline version doesn't have that fancy Search tab, but it seems to do a
better job...for example, try searching for BeginEdit.

For the online version, in Firefox
http://download.autodesk.com/global/docs/softimage2013/en_us/sdkguide/index.html

If I search for "View" Everywhere, the first hit is the View object reference
page.

RE: disconnected shaders on ref models - still happening in 2013

Hi

I haven't heard about any disconnected shader problems in quite awhile. If
either of you are having these problems and have a data set for reproducing it,
then please log it for investigation, because I don't see anything logged about
disconnected shaders right now.
AFAIK, XSI_FORCE_SHADER_RENESTING_DURING_LOAD isn't a fix for the disconnected
shader problem...if that fixes it, then the shaders weren't really disconnected.

2012-05-31 Thread Stephen Blair
Hi

Membership disabled?

If you get an e-mail saying your membership has been disabled due to excessive
bounces, then reply to that message and leave the Subject line intact.
That will re-enable your membership. If that fails, e-mail the list owner.

I believe this related to the "posts not getting through" issue...

List not working?

For me, it is working now. I was out of town for several days, but since I got
back yesterday, I'm getting all the mailing list posts.
I'm subscribed to this list with four different e-mail accounts:

* autodesk.com

* gmail.com

* hotmail.com

My gmail.com account is the only account that did have [lots of] problems, but

Definitely missing stuff.

I sent a post about AFX cameras to Softimage and it is in the Archive on Google
Groups but has never made it to my new gmail account.

And I have also been banned for some reason or other. Not sure if that is the
ListProc doing that or MS spam filters blocking it.

Either way, something be busted.

Hanging while drawing the viewports often indicates a problem with the graphic
card display driver.

If you modify the default layout to hide the OpenGL viewports, does Softimage
start up?

filezilla, gimp, openssh-server? seriously? why? o_O anyway. i installed

uhm.. flash and dropbox !? why on earth does softimage need that? i
temporarily installed flash with no luck on getting softimage to run
afterwards. i resisted to install dropbox for now, do i really need that
in order to get softimage up and running?

as for the rest of the install-advice: i had already disabled nouveau
and se-linux, of course -> as i said in my inital posting, mudbox and
maya run fine, i guess they wouldn't if my nvidia-driver would collide
with the opensource-nouveau-stuff and neither maya nor mudbox install

thanks steven,

I had the same problem here and this is really something that makes me puke. If
you state that the only supported distro of linux is Fedora14 and when you
first run your setup it returns with an error, then something is really wrong
with your testing on the supported platform. I mean, if you guys are about to
merge every damn aspect of softimage with the autodesk doctrine, then I would
like to see some stuff done on the linux side of things. What do you think?

RE: RANT warning: AD licensing ingeniousness

2012-05-22 Thread Stephen Blair
Hi

I’m not sure I understand, but I’ll assume you have separate serial numbers for
Soft, Maya, and Mudbox.

You can activate all the individual network licenses and download the .lic
files, you don’t have to update the server until you are ready.
Even then you can add just Softimage if that’s what you want. You can add the
others later.

I don’t know how activating separate Maya, Mudbox, and Softimage licenses could
end up in a conflict, unless you have Suite licenses perhaps? Or multiple
serials for each product?

For network licenses, you have to stop the license server, yes.

Also, you can run Softimage 2013 in trial mode for 30 days.

So I got around to installing Soft 2013 only to find that Autodesk in their
wisdom designed the licensing activation procedure so that I should activate
our Maya and Mudbox 2013 licenses simultaneously to avoid conflicts, and on top
of that the licensing for older versions may break and need reactivation, so
effectively I have to wait until such a time where nobody will be waiting for
licenses and we are not rendering, to do this.

And I just want to install Soft 2013 and take a look at the goodies.

Thank you Autodesk for making my day that much worse - grrr

geometry compounds and just change the emission individually, but I thought

I thought generate sample set might work but I'm getting context errors.

Thanks for your replies.

I know how to generate scntoc files but that doesn't help me. I have
to check different files from different persons, projects and
different SI versions, and not all of those scenes have a scntoc file.
Sometimes I open them in a higher version SI and make the mistake to
save and overwrite them. (not very often and always have backups but I
would like to prevent a disaster.)

So far I wrote an event to trigger before saving, get the file version
through printver.exe and compare this version with the app.version and
if the major number doesn't match open a warning msgbox to cancel or
proceed.

I don't know yet how to get the printver result directly into SI so
I'm using > txt and then read that txt file.

Sorry about that. The last time this came up, using printver.exe was the best
suggestion.

I know that one, but as far as I know it onlly gives me the Softimage
Application version, not the scene file.

When I log Application.Version in 2012 I get:
10.0.422.0

And when I open an old file, SI logs something like :
Loaded scene was created with build number: 8.0.201.0

This last one is the version number I want to get so I can compare it with
Application.Version.

Subject: Get Scene File Version

Hi, how can I get a Scene File version with scripting?

I know that when I open a file, SI logs the scene version. I also know that I
can get the version opening the toc file with a text editor, and use
printver.exe to display the version in a Command Prompt. But I want to do it
from inside SI.

The reason is that I have to work with different SI versions for different
projects, and sometimes I open a file from SI 2010 in SI 2012 when I shouldn't,
and a few times I even save the file! and since SI have zero forward
compatibility I'm totally screwed when I do that. So I was thinking in creating
an event to check the file version and compare it with the SI version and get a
warning message if they don't match, but I have no idea how to get a file's
version.

Is it possible?

Thanks,

They did, but it appears they both default to the same port when you run them

Hi List

I have a problem concerning expressions

I need to print the 'meat'of an expression that's already set up from an
object, ie the actual string that's being set on the target. I can get the
strings of the input and output ports using

rtn = Application.GetSource(p, c.siExpressionSource)

which is usefull if the input and output are equal but not if there are other
operations in the expression. Ideally what would be good is a "GetExpr" version
of this function:

Application.SetExpr("null1.kine.local.posx", "null.kine.local.posx * 2", "")

anyone know a way to do this?

But doesn't a PointCloudGeometry support GetClosestLocations? Can you use that
(I didn't try it yet) ?

I'm not finding that anywhere in the docs, is that available for Point Cloud
Geometry?

For a current tool, I need to get the closest point ID in a particle cloud to a
global position.
I'm familiar with using Geometry.GetClosestLocations(pos) which would
accomplish this if I were targeting a polygon mesh. Is there an analogue that
would work for a Point Cloud?

I do have another trick I can use to solve the problem, but I was hoping for
something that performed a tad faster. If there is no more direct solution,
I'll explain my approach.

print works with Python shipped with Softimage, because we re-compiled
something Python stuff with VC 2010.
It doesn't work with the Python installed on your system.

I could be wrong, but I believe that they had to deprecate "print" in Softimage
for release 2013.

Very Cool.
The black-cover manual was actually my 'Inside Softimage 3D' book.
Maggie got softimage to license it from me, because it was cheaper than
printing all the original manuals

If I remember it right Flesh was actually used on Charlotte's Web for UVing and
painting guides in because it was the only really linux friendly thing around
for what we needed to do (Sony possibly had a linux build of bodypaint, but
that was it).

I think at the time licensing was a bit murky because it wasn't even being sold
anymore. Yes, that was DNASoft, and it had been around for quite a while.
