Subject: Introducing Canvas - visual programming for Fabric Engine 2.0

Hi guys - I know you've been waiting for quite a while for us to start showing
you what we've been up to since Siggraph. Finally we're there and can give you
a look :)

I'm really happy and proud to give you the first proper look at Canvas, our
visual programming system for Fabric 2.0.

Quick highlight video: https://vimeo.com/121492305

Tons more information here: http://fabricengine.com/canvas-videos/

This is the first part of the FE2.0 plan, and we'll be showing this in more
detail at GTC on March 18th - please contact me if you want to meet up.

Looking forward to hearing what you have to say, and hopefully getting you on
the alpha/beta when we open things up (there is a sign up form on the Canvas
page).

Cheers,

Paul and the rest of the Fabric team

RE: just my 2 cents [Re:] Open letter to Autodesk

2014-03-11 Thread Vince Baertsoen
I am sorry to add more to the list on this topic, but i wanted to share my
thoughts with you all, from a different post i wrote on a different list.

From different post:

..

Like every job, it's all about the best talent and the best tools.

I have been extremely lucky to have some of the best crew, but i have to say,
the best tools make a huge difference in the process obviously.

Softimage is a great all rounder, and we could NOT have done PETA without
Softimage, in the time we have, if not at all.
All the sim work, including hair, has been done in ICE, all done from scratch
in few weeks.
It's a great all rounder software, and ICE is the most powerful piece of kit i
have seen in years. Visual programming is the future of our industry, and other
industries too (gaming, interactive,...)

I don't want to go off topic and reiterate what everyone has been expressing in
the last week with great passion, but AD, shutting down Softimage, is probably
one of the worst decision they made. The only advanced and forward thinking
package they have and they shut it down in the most disrespectful way, it
really hurts their reputation and not just in the Softimage community, but
across the whole VFX industry.
I wish AD had a better vision of the future of the overall CG industries, and
would come up with a total new way of producing images, and more appropriate to
new workflows and hardware, and they would transition not only Soft users but
Max and Maya users too, to this new platform.

I think Fabric Engine is what AD should have done, 5 years ago, and i am glad
the guys at FE are generating competition, as competition create better
products in general. I love what they are doing and i cannot wait to see the
next few releases. They do have a great vision and understanding of where we
all need to go.

But to answer your question, currently, we use mainly: Zbrush for modeling,
Mari for texturing, Maya/Softimage for animation, Softimage/Houdini for FX, and
Maya/Softimage for rendering(AD please fix the render layers in Maya), Nuke for
compositing and Softimage(and sometime C4D) for design/pitch work.

But software are here to support the artists. Productivity and Creativity are
key. So whatever software it is to answer these 2 questions, that what we will
use.

..

And after 15 years in CG, using a little bit Lightwave, 3Dsmax and Maya i
still think Softimage is still the best.

Anyway, thanks everyone for your passion ! Softimage, and the years of
development and hard work from great engineers and great users deserve this
fight, and i hope AD is listening and will act and deliver soon.

Hi everyone – there has been some interesting discussion on the ICE thread

our engineers worked on ICE) – we have our own views on what we want to achieve
with FE over the next year or so, and now is a very good time for us to get
your views. Hopefully they're aligned ;)

I have setup a survey to enable us to collect responses, and I will share the

RE: Mill 98% Human

2013-05-24 Thread Vince Baertsoen
Hi everyone,

Thank you so much on the great comments. It feels good to hear all this.

It was such a pleasure working with the whole team and supervising this project.
It's not every day you get a project with great script for a good cause, with
good schedule and have time to RnD so much stuff.
It was roughly 3 to 4 months of work, to get tools done and spot out of the
door.
Seriously we couldn't have done it without ICE in the time we had.
I am always looking at any software for commercial, to get things done to a
really high quality level, in a short amount of time, and i still can't find
anything which can beat the combination XSi, ICE and Arnold.

Everything on this project used ICE, from rig, muscle, skin, hair, rendering.

I started early test on skin with syflex and handover to Jimmy with Verlet
which was much faster while I was carrying on and finishing the muscle system
and leading the project.
Jimmy was working on the grooming of the hair and did a lot of super awesome
compounds and scripts (yes he is being very modest). Dave did an amazing work
on the hair interaction in a couple of weeks... like proper Siggraph paper
staff... to get the stiffness and collision of the hairs right.

On the muscle, it was one very simple and generic muscle which had a lot of
control to expend to more complex shapes and dynamic.
It was extremely fast, and could control stiffness, handles, tangeant, jiggle
and more, through few parameters and weight maps.
The main strength was the speed to setup the whole body. I just needed to place
each muscles close to the skeleton geometry and they would stick to it
automatically: zero rigging involved.

Anyway XSi and ICE are awesome, i know i don't need to convince you guys.
It's not just about the software it's a lot about the talents and people, but
seriously...XSi/ICE help a lot!

Thanks again for the feedback everyone.

RE: Ice feathers..

2012-06-15 Thread Vince Baertsoen
Hi Stefan,

Thats a very good question.
I did look at it, it's a very nice plugin. I really like the collisions and how
fast it is.
But i wasn't satisfied with the grooming tools and distribution.

Beside this, i had already a scattering tools from a previous job i did(trees
setup) which had good elements for a feather system.
http://www.themill.com/work/johnnie-walker/rock-giant.aspx

And obviously the last point would be than it's all open and we can do pretty
much whatever we want with it now.

Cheers.

Hi Vince,

welcome aboard!

With all the recent talk about custom feather systems being developed and
employed at Psyop and The Mill, I was wondering if you looked at mbFeathers
(http://feathertools.michael-buettner.com/)
before deciding to build your own system, and why you ended up investing the
time and taking your own rout. I assume you were looking for specific features
you could not find in,
or build upon, mbFeathers? Simply out of curiosity, I'd love to understand what
it was you couldn't find elsewhere that justified building a feather system
from scratch.

Cheers,

Stefan

Thank you very much Bradley.

Yes it's a full on ICE feather system.
I started to layer all the main compound from scratch at the beginning of
Hallmark, then Dave Barosin joined a month later and help me out with few very
helpful features and scripts.

Version 1.0 of this feather system at the end of Hallmark was really nice, but
version 2.0 that Bradley actually worked on is absolutely amazing and pleasure
to use!
We had a very nice time brainstorming and figure out how to improve it. Bradley
did all the hard work, cleaning it up and build a very nice interface around it.

We are using it now for an other bird (i can't mentioned the project yet, but
it looks great), and we are using it for other type of scattering like leaves
for trees for exemple.
Very very useful!

I can't wait to show you the next projects using it!

And i am glad i am finally on the Softimage list
It was about time.

Thanks again Bradley!

Vince.

You are correct. :-)

This would be a good time to introduce Vince Baertsoen, VFX Supe here at The
Mill in NYC. He's the bearded fellow who appears at 1:25 in the video, and I
believe the main architect behind the feather system, along with David Barosin.

I've been working with Vince since the beginning of the year, a super nice
fellow who really should be more visible in the community, especially
considering The Mill here in NY are using ICE like crazy and are on the prowl
for talent.
