RE: Hi

2004-02-13 Thread Navjot Singh
i could have given you my test case if i had not thrown away earlier.
but you ca write a test case that create 10 threads and open up 100
connections. don's close.

if your max-pool-size was set to 500 and pool can expand. then in the end,
the total open connections returned from the pool should be 1000.

then just changes the test case to close connections. now in the end =500
conns should be there.

May be other people know of some tool to do that? i know JMeter but i have
not used that.

Re: Hi Action Forward problem

2004-01-14 Thread Mark Lowe
If your trying to force the https scheme then i'd do this with your
webserver, otherwise your app wont be very portable. If you do really
need to do this then i'd keep the strings in a properties file, but i
cant see why you'd have to.

I would be mightily vexed if i had to configure tomcat or another
container to deal with https stuff just to develop on.

imo what you're trying is a hack and you'd be better finding another
way..

Perhaps useful perhaps not

Cheers Mark

Not as such. The idea's come up a few times. I've been using FormProc
for validation lately, and might try to extend that sometime to support
more of the attributes you'd need for something like html:control. Once
the appropriate attributes were available, the rest starts to fall into
place. Tags, like Mentats, need data. :)

The essential idea would be to abstract a UI component into a generic UI
object and let the object tell the tag what control to write. So, it's
the other-way around from how we usually do it now. The object (or
JavaBean) is running the show, and the tag just does like its told.

One perspective is that we need to define an field dictionary for an
application. We should be able to define a field's label, target type,
default control, hint, validator, error message, and so forth in a
single place, and then reuse those field attributes throughout the
application. A form could then become a collection of reusable fields.

And, this isn't just a UI thing, the business tier uses these fields
too. In the Commons Chain work (and DynaBean before that), we're finding
it convenient to use named attributes rather than strict JavaBean
properties. This is another place where a concrete dictionary that says
this field uses this attribute key would be useful.

So, essentially, it would be helpful if there a meta-class that combined
the properties required by Swing, SWT, and HTML 4.1 controls with
selected properties from ResultMetaData. For extra credit, it could also
support the Java Metadata Interface http://java.sun.com/products/jmi/. :)

The point of this class would not be to *store* the data, but to
*describe* the data we're storing.

Once in place, packages like Hibernate and iBATIS might offer support
for the metaclass, and so you'd have something to help glue the User
Interface layer of your choice with the Data Persistence layer of your
choice.

It's quite possible several packages offer such a thing already, but
buried within a larger implementation, making it difficult to share.
(Hark! I hear the Commons calling.)

This could be an interesting space to explore with Jelly, which is
already doing things with Swing and SWT, along the the usual taglib stuff.

Of course, I'm sure there's overlap with JSF in this space, but I'm
waiting for the dust to settle before spending too much time with that
gorilla. :)

Hmmm, how long before we see JellyFaces, I wonder.

AFAIK, there's no such beast right now, though I keep thinking there
 should be.

Essentially, the idea would be to represent the entire form and all of
its fields as a JavaBean (or Map of JavaBeans, or Map of Maps), which
could be instantiated by an XML file. Not unlike the XML form element
the Validator uses, only more so.

A JSP Tag (or Velocity Tool) could then render the control based on the
properties of the JavaBean form. So instead of having something like

 html:input property=xyz ... /

 you'd have something like

 html:control property=xyz ... /

The tag would then lookup the xyz property, and then the controlType
property on the xyz JavaBean, and use that value to decide which control
to render (input, select, ... ).

For extra credit, there could also be tag/tool that could write a
plain-vanilla version of the entire form as a simple table.

I end up doing this myself eventually, but keep hoping someone will beat
 me to it =:)

Did you take a look at
Middlegen(http://sourceforge.net/projects/middlegen/)?
It's pretty close to what you are describing. In fact it goes couple steps
backwards and forwards generating JSPs/Struts action classes directly from
database. It has plug-ins for EJB and JDO. If have a site with simple forms,
it saves you a lot of time by generating all the forms with get/set.

Re: Hi Ted, where is scaffold.ExistsAttributeAction??

2003-10-13 Thread Ted Husted
The source is under the Struts contrib folders.

Yes, the scaffold package has been stable for some time now.

The next thing might be a similar set of classes that work with the
Commons Chain package. It would be the same strategy, though: use the
Action as an adapter to call reusable business layer classes.

Is scaffold still being working on?

Hi, problem using html:messages id=message property=specific

2003-09-26 Thread suresh kolli
Hi,

I couldn't get the following to work: (though trying as per the Struts API reference).

--- Doesn't work
html:messages id=message property=specific
li
font color=red bean:write name=message/ /font
/li
/html:messages
-Doesn't work
I have the following code in Action class:
ActionErrors errors = new ActionErrors();
errors.add(specific, new ActionError(error.specific.req));

and do have the mapping values for the error.specific.req in ApplicationResource
file.

The .jsp doesn't display the error message added in the Action class, using the
abobe code.

where as if use the generic property of ActionErrors.GLOBAL_ERROR, (as shown below),
the error is being displayed.
works
html:messages id=message property=%=
org.apache.struts.action.ActionErrors.GLOBAL_ERROR %
li
font color=red bean:write name=message/ /font
/li
/html:messages
works

Here i have added the error message to a property called specific and couldn't
retrieve the same. (I have the proper working setup with the struts and using 1.13
version). My purpose is to display the erros at required positios in the jsp.

please let me know, if i needed to go thru extra setup to get this working.

Thanks in Advance

The problem certainly comes from your struts-config.xml file and/or your

That depends, if you are going to have 1 Class per Record, then you could do
something like:
But if you need to reference each record by name, then you can either add a
name Attribute to the Record like:

class Record {
private String name;
private ArrayList record;

public void setSubRecord(Record subRecord){...}
public Record getSubRecord(String recordName){
   loop...
   if( record.getName().equals(recordName) )
   return record;
}

public void setName(String name){...}
public String getName(){...}

}

Then you can just search each RecordObject in the ArrayList.

Of coarse you can always look at a HashMap as well.

an ArrayList will hold Objects. an ArrayList is an object itself. So, the
ArrayList could contain other ArrayList's in it.

struts tags will display my info.

My expected output is like this

Record1blahblah
Record1_sub_detail1blah
Record1_sub_detail1blah
Record1_sub_detail1blah
Record2blah
Record3blah
Record3_sub_detail1blah

I don't how will be the data type of my class probably it will look like
this:

class Record {
ArrayList record;
ArrayList subrecord[];
}

r really don't what to use really. Can someone give me some idea and also
how will i be able to display it in
my JSP using struts tags.

thanks a lot.

Re: Hi

2003-02-06 Thread Nicolas De Loof
You could create a servlet (or an action) that uses user Locale object to
put the localized image in HttpResponse (a binary stream). Doing so you
would have to define a mapping in web.xml (/images/localized/*.gif -
LocalizedImageServlet) as I don't think browser will accept image without
good request extension.

Nico.

Unless you want to go to the trouble of building images dynamically.
Plenty of techniques for doing this, but possible load issue though,
generating images when your content like that can be so easily served by
 the web server

Hi,

I have a requirement like this.
When the user enters into some jsp pae, he can selecte some checkboxes.
The data related to these checkboxes i have to store in a file. So that next

what he previously selected.
I want to write this information to a text file, so that it can be read for
later.

RE: Hi

2003-01-28 Thread Andrew Hill
You should be doing this in the action, not in the view. (View should only
be for viewing!)
(In actual fact you really ought to hide this even deeper in your model
classes which are then called by your action).
Not sure what the servlet api restrictions on file access from a servlet
(your action code runs under the actionservlet) environment. Anyone else can
shed some light?

1. This fals in : I do not have time to do it, but maybe you do.

2. Also this has nothing to do with struts, struts is MVC, so you do not
do things in JSP or view.

3. The answer is: You need to grab a hold you your application context,
and get the real path.

Re: Hi

2003-01-20 Thread BERNARDO ANTONIO BUFFA
You don't need to invoke bussiness logic methods from any tag libs.
Instead do the bizz job into the Action classes and setup the data,
generally into the form bean. Then the struts runtime will do the next
step (the View part of the MVC), these are your JSP pages.
To render form bean data from JSPs using the tag libraries you must provide
getters / (and setters ?) methods.

Hope is useful for U. The users guide is good also a reading mandatory.

 Hi,

As i am new to Struts,
Can anyone tell me how to invoke beans using struts-taglibs from my jsp

Can you give me the URL where we will get examples on this ?

 Thanks in advance

RE: hi

2002-04-05 Thread Maris Orbidans

Hi

If I understood you correctly the the solution is:

If Next button in first page is clicked then forward to the Action class of second
form NOT the JSP.

Then in second form retrieve user id ( for example from you'r session bean ) and
update according fields of the form.

For example:

define forward to action class.

 forward name=Page2Action path=/Page2.do/

In action class of first page do this:

if (NextIsClicked)   return mapping.findForward(Page2Action);

hope it helps

Hi Folks, 2 questions about Actions and their instance

2002-04-01 Thread theron . kousek

In a book I have it says:

It is also important to note that the Action class must be designed in a
thread-safe manner. This is because there's only a single instance of an
Action class per action element in the action-mapping configuration file.

So here's my 2 question(s):

1. I then assume that perform() is synchronized

2. What about those cases where 2 different action mappings resort to the
same action class?
For example:

 action
path=/BillingAdd
type
=com.expressbill.actions.setup.billing.BillingActionPreloadForm
  ...
 Rest of it snipped

and
 action
path=/BillingEdit
type
=com.expressbill.actions.setup.billing.BillingActionPreloadForm
  ...

There are 2 different path elements but both refer to the same Action class
instance...Does this mean 2 static instances of
BillingActionPreloadForm will exist or will only just 1 exist between the 2
different action mappings that link to the same class?

thanks,
Theron

No. If all data objects are local to the perform method, there's no
reason for it to be synchronized. If the data objects referred to in
perform are shared, then their access should probably be synchronized,
but not necessarily.

I don't know, but it doesn't matter. You should always assume that
any specific instance of an Action class could potentially serve multiple
threads at once. Or else what's the point of putting your app on the
web? ;-)

No it's not, and that's why it needs to be thread-safe. You may have two
different threads executing the perform() method simultaneously.

 2. What about those cases where 2 different action mappings resort to the

I may be wrong, but in this case you probably have two instances of your
Action class, one for each mapping.

Re: Hi Folks, 2 questions about Actions and their instance

The mm mysql jdbc driver has a last_insert_id() method to call after an
insert. It's the only way the driver returns you that info. What I
don't know though is how accurate it is?I think you can shoot
yourself in the foot if the call to it is not properly encapsulated within
a thread-safe/synchronized context. I'd hate for a call to
last_insert_id() to return a different id (someone else's insert that just
so happened between my insert and the call to last_insert_id()).

Therefore I think encapsulating this within a sync method and having an
action invoke it (like someone else on this group mentioned) may be the way
to go on this.

Theron

Theron,

If there are two API call to make then you MUST synchronize the code,
either with a synchronized block or a synchronized method. Even if it
were only one API call it would be better to synchronize, unless you
were sure that the API correctly handled (and would always correctly
handle) the synchonization.

Hi folks, a newbie asking a question about database access from withinstruts applications

2002-02-06 Thread theron . kousek

Hi Folks:

I am a newbie to struts so please excuse my ignorance. Can I ask advice
or get comments from the struts gurus on this list?

What is the best way to do a client/server application from within struts?
Do you have your JDBC calls primarily on the server side in your Model
(Business) objects and then serve the data up to your JSP pages?

Is JDBC from within the model beans the best way with which to perform
database calls from within a struts application?Or is there some other
kind of tool/package that is preferred (ie, similar to what entity beans do
for EJB)?

Do you try and avoid (at all costs) situations where you're keeping
resultsets open between requests and such? is there a web-site that
discusses the best way to do database applications from within the Struts
framework?

We'd like to duplicate our JFC/Swing application by which we log in and
create a user-profile object to be shared amongst all of our pages. I'm
thinking with struts our user-profile object could be a JavaBean with
session-scope that can be accessed amongst all pages. But would this bean
and other objects associated be able to use JDBC as a clean approach to
doing database applications with struts?

We looked at dbtaglib but don't want to use that as we want our SQL's and
business logic to be contained within beans rather than on the JSP pages.
We will consider using dbtaglib for simple things like reports and other
queries that we can throw together for users.

thanks again for any help or comments,
Theron Kousek

I don't agree. If you need to use scriptlets in your JSPs and you use
them
over and over on many pages, the scriptlet should be a tag. The tag can
be
reused on many pages, the scriptlet can't.

Please explain why This is a bad habit. Only do it if you must. Should
we only re-use code if we must? Is re-use of code a bad habit. :)

The thing on tags is do not use to many tags. Try to avoid writing
  tags.
Somehow, the example app on struts has a custom tag and people like to
learn how to write tags, and so there are lots of tags in Struts. This
is a bad habit. Only do it if you must.
Try to do as little code as possible in presentation/view/jsp.

So to me, tags and Struts framework are 2 different things, but bellow

Re: RE: [Fwd: Re: Hi....]]

2002-02-05 Thread Jonathan Gibbons

Hi,

The problem with too many tags is one of maintenance. Each tag you write becomes part
of your bespoke project 'language'. With large groups producing many tens or hundreds
of tags it can become a nightmare for new staff. Far better to stick to the core
tags, and struggle not to add many new ones of your own. Think of it another way,
each tag is exactly like you adding to html for your own project. Remember the horror
of IE v's Netscape when html diverged - that is exactly what a project is doing by
writing their own tags. New project members will hate it.

BUT, some ten or so custom tags will make your project a joy and there is no downside.

OTOH, if its your project, and you don't have to worry about maintenance (!) then do
anything you want.

Jonathan

I think he means that you should avoid as much as possible writing code (of
any sort : tags, scriptlets, etc...) in your JSPs, and rather put this code
in your Action classes / business logic classes

I don't agree. If you need to use scriptlets in your JSPs and you use
them
over and over on many pages, the scriptlet should be a tag. The tag can
be
reused on many pages, the scriptlet can't.

Please explain why This is a bad habit. Only do it if you must. Should
we only re-use code if we must? Is re-use of code a bad habit. :)

All that is not necessary. You can have the ActionForm bean placed in
session scope, and allow different JSP pages to fill out the properties.

This is configured in the struts config file.

 Peter,

Actually, for wizards I have usually just created a single large
actionForm that has all the fields for all pages of the wizard and I
just have it in the request. I use hidden fields on other pages of the
wizard to carry the values from page to page. That way the page designer
can dynamically move fields to any page they want without modifying the
 layout of the actionForm.

Hi Chetan,

There are no books available at this time though 2 are currently being
written that I know of. However, they will not be available for a while. The
best place to start is to go to the website jakarata.apache.org and search
under struts. there is A LOT of good information there. Also, another very
good site is www.husted.com. Ted(who runs the site) is very knowledgeable in
this field and posts to this mailing list very often. Hope that helps.

RE: Hi....

2002-01-30 Thread Shawn Furgason

Chetan,
There is at least one book available on the Struts framework out called Struts Fast
Track by Vic Cekvenich. You can check it out on Amazon at
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0971661901/qid=1012403446/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_3_1/102-2150136-4095349.
I own this book and personally don't care for the way the information is presented
(sorry Vic). It seems to be missing key points and leaves a lot to intrepretation.
You should make your own judgement of course.

There's apparently another book planned for May release by James Goodwill (also info
available on Amazon). A week or so ago, there was a posting about the TOC for a
O'Reilly book on struts which looks good, but it will probably be a while.. search the
archive for more info.

Personally, I've found the information on http://www.husted.com/struts/ and the
Bluestone site (already mentioned) to be great resources. This mailing list is also a
huge asset. I've been lurking for several months and have learned quite a bit from
the people here.

If I were doing it all over again.. I'd skip the book and stick to the on-line
resources. The framework is evolving pretty fast and print formats will have a
difficult time keeping up.

Best of luck,
Shawn.

Yes I can buy of course. But Who can tell me that tomorrow you at jcorporate
make me pay 20.000 $ for Expresso. In that case I can' t move away to ensure
my applications still works. I use Java hoping to be free from platforms and
sqlservers and app servers etc. Why do I have to purchase Expresso? I have
doubt also on Java and more on struts and a lot more on Expresso. I can code
a simpler content manager all by myself in JSP. I can enjoy a lot. And be
free ( maybe ). Sometimes reinventing the wheel is not so bad.

Kako, you have enough work on this list for at least a weekend or two.

If you get lazy, and just want to start with a java code base that is already
written for custom database access and logins and registrations and security and
testing and logging and so on, try Expresso. Here, you can concentrate on the
business logic and navigation, instead of the plumbing, as some of us crazier
folks are doing. This is, of course, a Struts implementation.

Or, if you get really REALLY lazy and crazy, and want your base Expresso code
written for you, go to
http://webAppWriter.com
put in your table schemas using an Excel spreadsheet, and it will send you back
fully functional data access struts jsps and controllers that you can then modify
and stitch together per your own brilliant business logic and navigation.

So far, the speed record for a complete write and deployment of a functional web
app with custom table schemas is 9 and a half minutes, but your time will surely
vary. 30 plus samples on the site.

Obviously, this will cause as many problems as it solves, because you will still
have to learn how everything works. At least, this way, you can learn from a
working model that reads and writes to your database, rather than having to
invent it all first.

Re: Hi All, especially Nial Pemberton and Ted Husted - Re Logic Tags

2001-08-24 Thread Ted Husted

Personally, I would tend to want to stand pat on the Struts tag
extensions while the JSPTL is being sorted out. Ideally, I believe we
would want to include a bare minimum number of tags with Struts, and
leave everything else to places like Jakarta Taglibs. It's possible that
Nial might want to propose his Taglibs over there, for wider
distribution. We'll probably be moving our own logic tags there too
eventually.

An important point generally is that Struts is not meant to be an
omnibus platform for Web development. We do not want to include
everything any developer might ever want to use to write an application.
Struts is designed as a lightweight platform that fills the gaps between
Servlets, JavaServer Pages, i18n, and a MVC type design. We included
some general purpose tags to begin with, because when we started, places
like Jakarta Taglibs and the Commons didn't exist. Now that they do,
we'll be moving whatever functionality we can over there, so Struts can
focus on only doing the things Struts absolutely needs to do.

When Craig decided to name the framework Struts, I think part of what he
had in mind was that the less of it that shows, the better ;-)

You can use the menuing component written by Scott Sayles and available at
http://www.husted.com/about/struts

In the action class you'll need to
- load the items from the database and create the menu components.
- put the menu in the menu repository

Then in the jsp you'll be able to use the menu tags to display the menu.
