RE: HAPPY DIWALI!

2003-10-24 Thread Mark Galbreath
That's pathetic. Ever hear of the caste system? Ever read The Far
Pavillions by M.M. Kaye? Indians have historically been too busy
repressing and killing each other to offer refuge to anybody else. Silicon
Valley would be nothing without Indians? Oh, puhleeeze..talk about
racist bullshit

Though I believe it is not the right place to discuss it. But couldn't
resist for long. India has always been protector of underprivilige and
enormous immigrant from Pakistan, bangladesh, srilanka. It is Indian
Researchers who have made MIT, Stanford proud of what they are today. If US
dares to stop all the H1B visas. Believe me It will make US totter on their
foot. It is Indian Sabeer Bhatias who have made silicon valley what it is
today. And tell me who is the native American for name sake. ? Native
americans were killed by european, Irish immegrants. It is not about cheap
labour, It is about efficient cost to value ratio. I have never been to
America and NEVER wish to be there also. We do all the high level research
in our IITs, IISCs.

First, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Diwali. I do have Indian
and Hindu relatives, and the thought is very much appreciated.

But, as the list moderator, I would respectfully ask everyone to stop
posting to this thread, now. It's no longer about wishing everyone in
our community well, or about helping each other use Struts. I'm sure
there are places where interested parties can carry on such threads, but
this is not one of those place.

So, let's get back to work guys.

Re: HAPPY DIWALI!

2003-10-23 Thread Adam Hardy

Almost - it's Guy Fawkes Day!

But Guy Fawkes Day is hardly the same as the Festival of Lights - true,
we have loads and loads of fireworks and burn huge fires, but it is to
commemorate England's most famous traitor who tried to blow up the
Houses of Parliament in 1605. He was a pukka bloke, but made the
mistake of getting caught. This is how we try to keep our politicians on
their toes.

So you see English quirkiness isn't a recent thing - it dates back
centuries. :)

Re: HAPPY DIWALI!

2003-10-23 Thread Geeta Ramani
Excatly when the struts list became a platform for xenophobia I don't know, but
maybe before someone professes sympathy for the poor and starving, they need to
check out the stats of the third world, like maybe how many people are below the
poverty line, in, dare I say it, India? Unless people assume (naturally) that
corporations who out-source to the third world are, naturally, not being
concerned about the bottom-line but just really being oh-so kind and just want
to give hand-outs to help out the poor and starving.. When, oh, when will
people start targetting their wrath not at the greed of big corporations but at
the bloke round the corner, who's only looking for a daily wage..?

(Plus of course checking out the difference betwen hindu and hindi may be a
cultural plus, but hey who's counting..)

Don't feel bad about it if you feel little out of place. just enjoy life.

but anybody from India can get an H1B visa, displacing millions of
jobs from indigenous Americans, dragging down market labor rates
and causing 7 percent unemployment in our industry.

Business look for skills. If Americans could provide ample, your businessmen
WONT search in other countries. AND not every indian get a job over there.
Indians who are better than guys like you get there. One day you or your
fellow americans might go to other countries(india will be one of them) for
a job :-)

I won't abuse you on XMas as i respect very religion and their festivals.

Bullshit. Business looks for cheap labor. The reason guys like Michael
Dell, Larry Ellison, and Steve Ballmer lobbied Congress for expansion of
H-1B numbers was because technical industry workers were able to command
record-high compensation because of the shortage of LABOR, not TALENT. The
flood of H-1B tech workers has diluted the labor market, depressed
compensation rates, and raised unemployment.

Do your own homework. Search on anything from Washington Post to google

How many techies want to be a nurse ? ( I know 2 who are taking courses in

That's one of the skills that business look for. Same work for less money.
Slowly, when all your US companies outsource their work to eastern countries
like india/china, you will have no other option but to go to those countries
OR just fight till death in your country.

BTW, When you get OIL you are all OK, when you PEOPLE it HURTS.

Do your own homework. Search on anything from Washington Post to google
on the subject. This is not just my opinion; it's historical and economic
fact.

The biggest fact is that Americans are starving fellow Amercians out of
jobs.
Not Indians.

Anyway, this year, just one third of H1B will be issued in India for US as
against the past years for the interest of better employment to native
amercians.
See if this can help your job ;-)

And it has nothing to do with any ethnic holiday; if you think otherwise,
you are probably an H-1B.

I have never been on H1B for your info and don't even want to be. However,
if you are interested to work in india, send me your CV.

Actually they can find jobs at home. They just pay bugger all compared to
jobs in the US (even when you take half what a normal US IT employee would
expect (which incidentally is somewhat more than what I get if some of the
salary surveys I've seen are anything to go by.))

You dont need to be Einstein to figure out that getting a visa to go work in

Why should American consumers of and investers in computer software and
stuff be expected to pay inflated prices for your work when you no longer

do far better going into some area of the economy that can use it more
efficiently and provide more jobs for more people rather than a few jobs for

Search on anything from Washington Post to google
on the subject. This is not just my opinion; it's historical and economic
fact.

And it has nothing to do with any ethnic holiday; if you think otherwise,
you are probably an H-1B.

Yes you correct should be spending money on Birth control and all what you suggesting.

But you have to divert the resources for you nations security first. For example in
this bad

Afghanistan of talibs, the same is for

India investing in Nukes.

With all your arguments you look more racist then actual concerned. I believe strongly
that USA is a

I never thought I'd be posting about this, but
the point of the original posting was to share a holiday that is important
to many of the subscribers of the list, not to discuss the
political/social implications of a visa that is only relevant in the US.
The original posting was similar to any Happy HOliday or Merry
Christmas salutations that have been posted during December in the past.

This list has a global audience who may/may not be interested in such
discussions and political discussions are not relevant to the list topic
in general. In addition, discussing it on the original topic thread
detracts from the original celebratory topic, imho, of course.

Happy Diwali to everyone!

 Mark,
There are people asking legitimate questions on this list that aren't
getting answered because of the flood of spam we're receiving from this
thread. You are abusing the laid back nature of this list and turning it
into Slashdot level discussions. Please be more considerate of people who
 need help.

 Thanks,

First, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Diwali. I do have Indian
and Hindu relatives, and the thought is very much appreciated.

But, as the list moderator, I would respectfully ask everyone to stop
posting to this thread, now. It's no longer about wishing everyone in
our community well, or about helping each other use Struts. I'm sure
there are places where interested parties can carry on such threads, but
this is not one of those place.

So, let's get back to work guys.

Certainly, I agree. On the other hand, it is a real pity a friendly
thread like the Diwali one ends up like this *even here*. Though it
doesn't belong here, for some reason I nearly felt personally insulted
when British and American newspapers depicted my country's
representatives as weasels not too long ago, and there are still sites
like www.germanystinks.com and the like around. So fate chose to have
me born in the Axis of Weasels, in the heart of Hitler's country
(though Hitler himself was an Austrian) and whatever. What can I do?
All I can say is that envy is no justified reason for making out
'enemies' and bashing them afterwards. In this direction, I'm also
rather glad we're looked upon as pacifists nowadays than the other way
round. Note I've served in the German army in times of the Cold War,
even being assigned the title of 'Killer' by my comrades, for I could
hit any target within a 10cm diameter ('aim at the lower-left belly')
in 9 of 10 times. With a standard G3 rifle without any opticals, over a
300m distance, and repeatedly. Then, as fate provided, today, one of my
closest personal friends is from White Russia, a true Oracle wizard,
certified DBA and all. I'm really glad today I never had to face him in
combat :-) OK, those times are long gone, but one lesson I've learned
still: my friend is here because he's good at what he does. He's not
here because he's cheap. And I like him just for personal reasons,
as I like dislike many Germans as well. Probably, one as to reach
the age of 35 to come to this insight, but generalization should be
a technical term and be left there for good. Then, if some of you
American guys have a problem with your work visa policies, it's
still your problem, and it's really dumb to bash people just for making
use of their chances. In fact, that's basically exactly the same thing
you do, too.

This, live from the heart of the Axis of Weasels, from

-- Chris (SCPJ2)

who just forgot to say 'Pop!' before, but still goes to bed now. Happy
Diwali to all of you!

For the uncultured among us, i.e. me, what is Diwali / Deepavali? Is
that when the San Andreas Fault gets bigger?

And if you're celebrating, what are you doing at work? Is this not a
celebration associated with beer? How strange.

What's all this about Einstein and cricket and Mercedes? Go on, give us
a translation..

 Subject: HAPPY DIWALI - URGENT!

 Dear Diwali Friend,

My letter might come to you as a surprise but I request you
 go through it
patiently and understand why I decided to write without
 seeking for your
formal permission. My name is Prince Zak Tubman; I am a grand
 son of former
President William Tubman (late). I work under the Former President of
Liberia - Mr Charles Taylor as an under secretary.

I am writing this letter in the spirit of Diwali to you
 because of where we
have found ourselves. You should remember that the government
 of Liberia
under President Charles Taylor has been having problems with
 the United
Nations. few weeks ago, Mr Taylor and some members of his cabinet were
indicted in the War crime tribunal in Sierra Leone. As if that is not
enough, the bank account of Mr Taylor and some members of his
 cabinet have
 been frozen in Switzerland.
The asset of Liberian President incorporated with legal aid
 application by
the UN WAR CRIME TRIBUNAL in Sierra Leone amount to
 2.37billion Swiss francs
or 1.54 billion euros. The tribunal indicted Taylor of financial and
military sponsor of two rebel groups in Sierra Leone while
 receiving raw
diamonds, which he sold and invested the profit in several countries
including Switzerland. Right now, because of this, indictment
 is hanging on
the neck of Mr. Taylor and some other government officials.

It is difficult for the innocent officials to operate bank
 accounts and
invest in any business. So I want to solicit for your help as
 a foreign
partner to move our funds in The Netherlands. I need your
 help because of
this stigma that has been placed on my senior colleagues.
Also I am soliciting for your help because I do not know when
 this whole
investigation will be over. What we have collectively in The
 Netherlands is
$18 Million united state dollars. If you can successfully
 help us to move
all to safety, into your account, we promise to give you 15% and any
investment we make, with the remaining amount, we shall
 allocate 10% to you
and I have set aside 5% of the total amount for any expenses
 incurred during
 the process of this transaction.

This transaction is risk free because this is not drug money
 and we have
documents to prove it. Please treat this request with the
 utmost secrecy it
deserves even if you are not willing to help. Let me have your private
telephone, fax and address so that I can be able to contact
 you to discuss
 the modalities of this transaction.

 Thanks and Happy Diwali!

 Prince Zak Tubman

RE: HAPPY DIWALI!

2003-10-22 Thread Dhaliwal, Pritpal (HQP)
I thought I would just add my 2 cents also and wish every Happy Diwali

Diwali is celebrated all over India, and it has special importance to Sikh
Religion. You can read more about it here
-http://www.sikhstudy.com/diwali_for_sikhs.html , but the most significat
reason was that Sikh Guru Hargobind Sahib (6th Guru) was able to get 52
Indian kings from Jahengir, who was the current ruler in India in 1577.

At any rate, Happy Diwali and get some indian music from www.desiest.com to
celebrate it a little more... Bhangra music goes great with beer..

Pritpal Dhaliwal

It's very, very rude and I can't translate it here, but it's what
Mahatma Gandhi said when he discovered the trains weren't running
 because of the Deepawali holiday.
