This might saw some ideas to the Freenet people. WHAT'S ELETTRA ? Elettra is a software providing plausible deniable cryptography. It supports a dynamic number of files and requires a password for each file. When you need to decrypt a file, the password is able to find in the encrypted archive the file related to it. the security measure is in the protection of the number of files encrypted in the archive, because the algorithm is thought to give a plausible ammission that the data unencrypted is simple random data, and only one file is encrypted in it. [freenet-support] Converting the whole internet into a freenet
I have been following the discussions on this freenet mailing list for months, and it seems to be more and more active, and new ideas pup up :-) I was then struck by the thought, to make the whole internet into a freenet, and to let all harddisks be encrypted. Really it's all about files, files and more files and again Then we get someting closing into Freedom of the people of the world. This is just a philosophical thought for all you clever guys to consider. But that's how the development accelerates anyway - an idea is picked up, rejected, and then treated in a lot of brain's subconsiousness, and then a much better child idea might be born. Man, you can't make a freenet out of internet. Because this will require anoter network-layer protocol. It is not all about encryption. However, when more users will join, and when the protocol will become more stable, it might be possible to include freenet interface into linux kernel and allow freenet-only routing for routers. That would be cool, but I hardly belive that. If Freenet was included as a package with all the essential Freenet programs into linux, it could be run parallel to the ordinary Internet. It is important it to be very easy to install and use, then I think more people would begin using it. [freenet-support] Why is the development of the freenet project going so slow
I was just wondering? I have tried out freenet for years, but it still seems not to be ready for serious use by individual people, that is the huge group of ordinary people out there on the Internet, who are in serious need for a Freenet. It can be used mostly only by small groups of smart people, who are more or less programmers, really friends, closed groups or alike. I find freenet to be a very important project, for the freedom of speech of the world, but freenet seems to have stopped up in its development. It is still quite difficult to use and setup for normal people, I find, and not many people have "frinds" to exchange nodes with, in order to become anonymous. The internet is in the middle of a very fast development phase, but freenet just sits there more or less sleeping. I do not have any capabilities of programming myself, and is only a possibly enduser of Freenet. Maybe some forces do not want Freenet to develop - or maybe it is really only intended for small closed groups of people? Interested in hearing some comments *smile*

Okay, we may be able to fix the part about the wrapper failing to start a new JVM. Try adding this to your wrapper.conf: wrapper.restart.delay=5 Now my freenet is running on my fit-pc - has been running properly the last week. I did following (I am using ubuntu 8.04): 1. Created a text file /etc/cron.allow containing my username. 2. Inserted following line in /etc/crontab: @hourly myusername ~/Freenet/run.sh start (Probably not necessary) 3. That might explain why your wrapper's wrapper (your crontab-run script) wasn't working. Though you don't have to manually specify a cron.allow file... you can just delete it, and it allows everyone by default, unless they're mentioned in cron.deny. 2. His wrapper stopped at 33minutes past the hour, while his own cronjob wrapper is set to run every ten minutes... so even after 7minutes, run.sh status still said it was running, or something. I am running freenet (ubuntu 8.04) on one box with no open ports, and also running freenet on another box with most of the ports mentioned in freenet opened - both boxes appears to run fine. I am using "Firestarter" as my "firewall" as I find it easy to use, only. Now my question, is it necessary to have any ports open in order for freenet to work best?

I am running freenet (ubuntu 8.04) on one box with no open ports, and also running freenet on another box with most of the ports mentioned in freenet opened - both boxes appears to run fine. I am using Firestarter as my firewall as I find it easy to use, only. No, it's not -necessary- in the sense that your node will work anyway, but
it's a good thing and you should do that. Let's see why.

Freenet uses two random ports for node-to-node comunication, which means
that an attacker can't determine the existence of a freenet node looking
for traffic on a particular port.
In conclusion, you should allow inbound communications ('answering the
phone') on your darknet and freenet ports, and the only valid reason not to
do that is that you can't.

I have published two small test sites (index.html - activelink.png - an archive file with some images) - using jsite. It works fine, when I download them to myself. But how do you get freesites onto the freenet indexes anonymously in the spirit of Freenet. I had expected a electronic spider to put activelinks onto an index page but I read following on top of Freenet Activelink Index, which surprises me very much: This index is manually maintained and at the moment I will include pretty much any site that has an activelink, except for sites.. ? - which to me indicates that freesites are not anonymously announced, and not free of censorship? I am on FMS, but I would prefer a spider to announce freesites without any human person interferring? I have installed fms, and it is running. I also have freemail -and thunderbird running, and can receive -and send freemail messages. I am reading the fms page http://localhost:8080/;, but I need a better overview, because I am an fms newbie? How do I use fms to read fms boards - what setup do I have to do? How do I send messages to a fms board - what setup do I have to do, and how do I send the message? You shouldn't decompress it, but keep it as it is. A better way of installing Freemail is to go to http://localhost:/plugins/ and select 'Freemail' from the 'Load Official plugin:' drop-down menu there. Note: If somebody is monitoring your connection they will know that you have gotten Freemail, as the download happens from the normal web. They will *not* know what you do with the Freemail after you downloaded it, though. This did not work. Instead I inserted in Add an Unofficial Plugin: /home/user1/downloads/freenet/freemail_/MfeZlMXJZja-FfLA6Yyqf~e8HdH5r3-WsxGtUxUOdyE - and then I clicked the Load button - and that worked.
