I have several questions about freenet's security
First of all i would like to notice that there is a lack of
documentation on the site regarding cryptographic algorithms
implemented in freenet. I wasn't able to find anything about it in
 the official FAQ

What algorithms are in use ? How my traffic is encrypted ? Or it is
 not encrypted at all ?
There is an SSL option in Freenet, what it is for ? Is it dangerous
 to use freenet without it?

As far as i understood, freenet using keys to get access to some
information. Each key contains a hash of the file and the decryption
key. So when i'm using freenet i'm requesting some file by its key.
So what will prevent my ISP to spy my keys and then grab an encrypted
file from my traffic ? After that he can use a key with a file and -
viola - he can view my information.
Is it possible or i'm not understand the scheme ?
You're not understanding the scheme. Do you have access to
   https://freenetproject.org/faq.html#hash
 or

Lets say you are a group of 10 men and you want to communicate by
computer and nobody else must know.
You all have to install a fresh freenet on each or yours computers.
Then you must all 10 meet some place in real life (a bar or club) and
exchange nodes e.g. by exchanging nodes copied onto a cd. That means
each of you must bring 10 cd's with a copy of your node.
Nobody else must know what you are doing.
Then you have a darknet.
To keep a darknet private you must not mix up with any opennet nodes.
I just try to explain the principle of how you could run darknet in a
simple way.
Please correct me if I am wrong?

 Swap was not on !!

You might think about zcache, or whatever it's called now, a kernel
driver for compressed swap that went in around linux 2.6.35
(unfortunately the tools have changed somewhat since it went in so it's
hard to configure). Basically your problem is that 256MB of RAM isn't
really enough for Freenet, though you can reduce the settings (store
size, bandwidth etc - suggest you create a brand new datastore rather
than trying to resize, resizing is quite resource intensive).

I did create new datastore when I had my last swap problem

It has been running fine for the last months, but some days ago it
stopped completely.
I can see it working on my router, when green ethernet cable lamp blinks
quickly lots of traffic.
Then I had to update it from konsole terminal and now it is blinking very
quick again.
Wonder why it suddenly stopped completely?
It use to update automatic without any problems.

(You only have 256MB physical memory, right? I'm guessing your machine

Anywho, reducing freenet's java memory usage will probably make things
worse -- it'll make it max-out sooner. Try reducing the size of your
datastore. (To test that this is in fact the problem, you can put it
back to it's original size, and theoretically, you should get the same
 uptimes back?)

I have reduced datastore from 30 to 20 gb and it still does not work
properly.

You meet such groups in certain Libyan cities and discuss, then you

and exchanged nodes at these meetings only let's say by exchaning one cd

Then you do planning of what to do to get rid of Gadaffi using this

Then nobody but the implied persons of the darknet will know.

Of course if a spy from Gadaffi becomes part of the darknet from joining
such meetings, this person could compromise everything.

But as long as the darknet is running properly with trusted persons only
you have a very safe heaven.

If compromised you could close down that darknet and start a new darknet
with proper people.

And so on .

You could even make a new darknet twice a year to ascertain it is not
compromised.

It could be a group of gangsters or porno people etc - only the phantasy

This was an attempt to explain the principle with simple terms of how a

[freenet-support] Why does my system go so slow when I run freenet on its own computer parallel to my normal desktop computer

2010-07-25 Thread user1
I have been running a smal fit-pc with freenet as a kind of Freenet
server for more than a year.

Then my internet service provider provided me with a new Thomson Gateway
Router, so I have broadband internet and ordinary telephony on the same
system, that's to the ordinary telephone jack.

I have noticed that everything has started to go very slow on my desktop
computer - especially i could not use skype.

Then I removed the freenet fit-pc, and now skype works well again.

Any suggestions, possible a set-up I can do on freenet, so freenet does
not disturb my ordinary internet system.

[freenet-support] How to use the freenet mailing list using pan newsreader

2010-01-11 Thread user1
I find it easier to use a newsreader (I use Pan, as it has worked very
well for me) instead of your e-mail client for managing your mailing
lists.

Install Pan using synaptic (in ubuntu).

Add as news server:

Pan - Edit - Edit News Servers - Add - news.gmane.org

Add your e-mail address:

Pan - Edit - Edit Posting Profiles - your e-mail address

Then Search for gmane.linux.ubuntu.user (this is the ubuntu-users list)
or gmane.network.freenet.support (this the freenet list) as group name
(use search box top left in Pan) and then right click on the found group
and choose subscribe.

Please note, that there is thousands of other mailing list groups out
there.

Practical setup items:

Pan - Edit - Edit Preferences - Behaviour - Groups - mark Get new
headers in subscribed groups on start up.

Pan - Groups - Get headers - Get all headers.
This item makes it very important, that ALL subject lines in all posts to
be very DESCRIPTIVE. Then it will be possible to search very distinct for
answers. That is if you have all headers of a newsgroup downloaded in
Pan, you can more easily find your answers. Search in subject lines is
done in top right search box in Pan.

When you post/follow up first time you will receive an e-mail asking
you to reply to the mail (to verify that you are you), and when you have
done that you are up to use
the mailing list group using Pan.

This should be done for each new newsgroup you subscribe to.

Using Pan for your mailing lists also give you a much better overview of
your mailing lists I think.

Sorry that I repeat the usefullness of Pan, but it took me several years
to find out how much more easy it is to use Pan for your mailing lists -
a very important weapon for getting help in the linux world I find.

You may use another newsreader at your choice :-)

***

If anybody has problems with certain spam articles/authors and use Pan
newsreader they can do:

Select the article/s

I think you need to publish a more user friendly description

Here is the mailing list archive:

Best read it month by month, then you might get some answers to your

Until you are able to do this, please shut down anything that parses XML,
specifically: - Do not use the search function (XMLLibrarian).
 - Unload the WoT and Freetalk plugins if you are using them. Likewise with
Library etc. - Do not use Thaw. Shut it down if it is running.

Other applications may also be vulnerable via the Python libexpat and
Apache Xerces libraries, so you should update your distribution ASAP.
However, not all applications that process XML are vulnerable as there are
 a number of XML parsers.

This concerns both denial of service and remote code execution and thus is
 a *SEVERE* vulnerability.

I will be putting out a new build ASAP, which will tell any users who
haven't upgraded to upgrade and will disable XMLLibrarian until they do so.

 http://www.cert.fi/en/reports/2009/vulnerability2009085.html

I am using ubuntu 8.04

There is an easy way in ubuntu to upgrade packages.

Open a terminal and run

updage-manager

Then click Install Updates

I just did that, but I only get sun-java6 update 14 (6-14-0ubuntu)

I also checked if Freenet 1228 had been automatic updated, but it had not, so
I ran:

cd Freenet

./update.sh

and now 1228 is running (instead of 1223)

But my Freenet still complains about updating sun-java

I can inform, that I also did an upgrade on another machine running ubuntu
9.04, and this also is running sun-java6 update 14 (6-14-0ubuntu)

  Ubuntu 8.04 - 256 mb ram - Freenet ver. 0.7.5 - store size 20 GB

256 mb ram for the whole system?

Yes (http://www.fit-pc.com/new/fit-pc-1-0-specifications.html)

With builds of the past month or two, ram usage is way down. If your
entire system only has 256 mb of ram, you could reduce Freenet's max
ram to a lower number, perhaps 192 or 160. I don't usually see mine
climb over 128 mb here unless I am doing some heavy usage.

 Excellent news =)

Cool! What kind of performance do you get out of it?

I had power failure to day 23 june 2009, and my fit-pc mini freenet server was
shut down.

Half an hour later it was up again by itself running without me touching it.

Here is some statistic from when it again was up running:

Ubuntu 8.04 - 256 mb ram - Freenet ver. 0.7.5 - store size 20 GB

Java ver. 1.6.0_07

JVM ver. 10.0-b23

Used Java memory 27.4 MiB

Allocated Java memory 59.6 MiB

Max Java memory 254 MiB

Running threads 94/500

Connected 19

Busy 1

Input rate 25.5 KiB/s (of 200 KiB/s)

Output rate 26.8 KiB/s (of 50.0 KiB/s)

Total input 21.9 MiB (9.25 KiB/s average)

Total output 32.9 MiB (13.9 KiB/s average)

Payload output 21.8 MiB (9.23 KiB/sec) (66 %)

# 1222 build 01222
# 26r23771

So for the last some couple of months my mini freenet server has updated
everything automatic by itself without any interference from me, and kept
running and running

I dont know how to measure that, it has been working constantly for some
months - just now 15 connections and 4 busy strangers is up - can se a
completely new interface, nice.

I just check that the broadband connection is blinking all the time.

Sorry, I am working on a very enduser level.

I am still waiting for a system to come up. so I can work on a friends level
(means invincible) - meaning to exchange nodes with friends anonymously in a
proper way, probably ver 0,8.

Eh? The output limit is set to 50KB/sec and you get 90KB/sec?

Sorry, the 90 KB/sec I measured some time ago on my broadband connection when
I uploaded some files to my ordinary homepage, I am not sure about how to
measure what actual bandwidth usage I typical get in my freenet?

  Note:

I have been running Freenet on a fit-pc the last aprox 3-4 months as a
  dedicated Freenet server only.

I have a test running in crontab in order to avoid Freenet stopping from
time to time, and it works - I have not touched the fit-pc for several
months, just checked on the network cable and the adsl modem, that it is
  constantly running (blinking control lamps).

I am using another pc with ubuntu 9.04 as my working computer, so the
bandwith speed is really divided between the two computers.

Fit-pc is far to slow to use for anything other than as a mini server.

[freenet-support] freenet stops running

2009-01-06 Thread user1
Now my freenet on my fit-pc with 256 mb ram seems to be running steady (has
been running for the last couple of days).

I did following:

***

First I created a bash shell script "/home/user1/freenet_status_test.sh" with
the following contents (please remember to make it executable):

#!/bin/bash

/home/user1/Freenet/run.sh status > /home/user1/freenet_test.txt

if [[ `cat /home/user1/freenet_test.txt | grep -i "Freenet 0.7 is not
running."` != "" ]]

then

/home/user1/Freenet/run.sh start

fi

***

Then I created an empty text file "/home/user1/freenet_test.txt".

***

Then I created a "/home/user1/.crontab" file with the following contents:

0,10,20,30,40,50 * * * * user1 ~/freenet_status_test.sh

***

Then I ran:

sudo /etc/init.d/cron restart

***

I found the model for above shell script script on http://bashscripts.org/
