Is there something I need to do in order to save changes? snip To me, and I've had similar issues in the past, it's dependent on the version of Pidgin being used and the protocol involved (or even the service providing the protocol). For services like Facebook Chat and Yahoo, the buddy lists are stored on the server; the XMPP interface on FB chat will not recognize changes made in Pidgin in my experience, you have to make the changes on Facebook via the edit friends option under the account drop down. The same might be true of Yahoo, I'm uncertain as I've not had issue to take anyone off my friends list there. OTOH, AIM should recognize the changes. I haven't had issue with AIM and Pidgin in several versions. ICQ and MSN are a different story entirely and I've not had issue with removing or changing the groups friends are in from those two services because I've not tried to do either operation in at least 2 releases. So, FB Chat XMPP (and I imagine the unsupported plugin): Have to go through FB's site to mess with that list. Yahoo, ICQ, MSN: Not sure what recourse you would have there, hopefully someone with a more fluid list than my own will step up. AIM: Should be no issue. XMPP (Non-FB): Should also be no issue there. Finch On FreeBSD TTY Console
Are there any known issues with Finch on a TTY console (ctrl+F1-F7)? I've been giving it a go the past few days and according to the man page, I should be able to use alt+ any number of letters for various functions (like alt+c to close a window). None of the alt+ controls work for me. The only thing it catches is ctrl+c and then it asks me if I want to exit Finch. I ask because whenever I add a new account, I have to close Finch and reopen it to close the add account window. Is this a FreeBSD issue or a known issue in Finch (I forget which version exactly but it's the latest one in ports)? -- Yours In Christ, PIT Emails are not formal business letters, whatever businesses may want. signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? If this works, the man pages should be updated to note the different behavior on FreeBSD (or perhaps a FreeBSD specific manpage). I've run finch on FreeBSD under screen numerous times this way. I don't *think* I've run it on the console directly, but I may have done so from a console, sshing into another machine (like when in a datacenter on one BSD machine, connecting back to my home machine). I wouldn't be surprised if I was the only one having this issue. Pidgin Randomly Crashes
Windows XP SP1 Executed through a BAT file (will provide contents on demand) to enable logging (will provide after I scrub it if asked) Connects to proxy via Tor client-wide (127.0.0.1:9050)[1] The only information it gives regarding the crash is the following log file entry: (07:00:13) GLib: g_strstr_len: assertion `haystack != NULL' failed (07:00:13) facebook: executing callback for /x/1262264402/true/p_1775598532=0 Also I have an issue with AIM but that's AOL and not Pidgin. Takes like 15-20 secs ... Why do you think that 15-20 seconds is a long time? Seems like very little time to me for a complex application to load and initialise. Well, Pidgin loads even quicker then that for me and I have several plugins installed. Pidgin isn't that complex, though. OOo takes 15-30 seconds to load for me and that's way more complex then Pidgin will ever dream of being (I hope). What evidence do you have that it is Pidgin that is slow and not something in the network? OpenOffice is really not a good application to compare Pidgin with. With network applications there are lots of steps in making a network connection that can cause the application to stall and wait. How many network connections are you making? How solid is your DNS? Is your ISP clueless about routing? Etc. Good points, but I connect to about 10 accounts, via an anonymous proxy relay service (SOCKS5) for all but one and it still loads up quicker then for the OP (and I load it up via a batch file that enables a debugging log). Connecting, though, is a different story though and I don't count that as part of load up time. I consider load up time from the time I click on the quick launch icon to the time I see my buddy list window. In the end though, if it is only slow on start up, then why do you care? For me pidgin starts up automatically as part of my login process, connects to 5 IM servers and is up for 10-12 hours. Spending an extra 10 seconds at start up is really not worth worrying about. Re: Backup question
Eric Bernier wrote: Hi, Thanks for your rapid answer. The computer I want to reinstall is now on Ubuntu 8.04 - Hardy Heron (April 2008) and I don't find anything in my personnal folder or the files you tell me... Sorry. I want to reinstall the same Ubuntu. I maybe tried to don't give enough informations for you to help me. Sorry. Are you using Windows or Ubuntu right now? The directions I gave tell you where .purple is on Windows XP. If you cannot find some of the folders I'm telling you about, you need to unhide all system folders on Windows, or search for the file and folder names I gave you. Here's why I want to reinstall Ubuntu: I have Ubuntu 8.04 - Hardy Heron - April 2008 on a Pentium III (Coppermine) with 512 megs (502,4) of memory, much space available on my HDD (24,3 gigabites) and everything was going fine until the October updates that I did. Since that my computer is REALLY slow. Has no bearing on backing up Pidgin on any platform. I found where to see the History of updates but I wonder if I can remove these updates to get back my speed? If I can and I do it, so I'll never be able to do any further updates to be sure to don't get back into that slow speed? I've made research to finaly end at the Ubuntu Forums at www.ubuntuforums.org but I understand nothing... Again, has no bearing on backing up and restoring certain Pidgin files. I'm sorry your computer is slow, but you'll need to take that up in a Linux User Group or Windows User Group mailing list. So, for me that look easyer to reinstall everything. I found by myself how to do backup for everything except for Pidgin. I told you how to do it on XP. Should be the same for any NT based Windows version. I'm now still with a really slow computer with Ubuntu 8.04 and I want to reinstall everything because I don't understand the way I can find what I could do... That's why I want to be able to do a complete pidgin backup. Kind of copy files from my actual Ubuntu and to past them after I reinstaled Ubuntu. Thanks again for your help! Eric Again, you running (or wanting to run, I'm not sure where you are at on that, nor do I care (not to be crass, but I'm trying to help you with Pidgin)) Ubuntu or not is not relevant to this list. I'm trying to be patient and helpful, but I think there is a language barrier preventing that. I gave you a list of the files you'll need, I gave you the directory path to where those files should be on any install of Windows XP (or really any NT based Windows OS). Perhaps someone running Vista, Win95-ME (God forbid) and NT 4.0 (God forbid that too) can help you with those particular versions of Windows, I cannot. Doesn't bother Me to sound crass. :) He has mentioned many times that He's running Ubuntu and will reinstall Ubuntu. He *never* mentioned Windows. SIGH Ubuntu is Linux. I heard he was installing (then reinstalling, then installing) Ubuntu, so forgive me for not being on the boat that he is using Ubuntu. Offering Windows assistance to a Linux User is about as helpful as offering a can of Diesel fuel to a motorist who has run out of gas. :-\ This is true, and my apologies to him and the rest of the list. It sounded like to me that he was wanting to install (or having used it before, reinstall) Ubuntu on a slow running computer. I hope I can be forgiven for thinking he was running Windoze. S/He needs to login as Root and then locate ~/.purple [~ = Home] I'm fairly certain Bernie is a he. And he doesn't need to be root to get into ~/.purple (unless he's running Pidgin as root, which is just silly). I'm very familiar with Linux myself (I've used RH6.2-8, Debian and Gentoo), having about a decade of experience with the OS (giving my experience with Linux to certify that I do know what I'm talking about). ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe?
