Problems With File Transfer

2009-12-01 Thread Programmer In Training
Generally the only protocol that I try to use the File Transfer feature
is Yahoo (at least lately). Sometimes the transfer works and the file
goes through, most of the time though it will not start. Here lately the
person on the other end is also using Pidgin, although that isn't always
the case (it's always been hit or miss on whether transfer will go
through or not).

No firewall, router properly configured, and files range from a few
bytes to a couple of MB. Is this a bug that's already been submitted?

Alright, I've got debug logging set up, next time I do a file transfer

Some distro's have a longer testing cycle before they release new

the same Ubuntu. I maybe tried to don't give enough informations for you to
help me. Sorry.

Are you using Windows or Ubuntu right now? The directions I gave tell
you where .purple is on Windows XP. If you cannot find some of the
folders I'm telling you about, you need to unhide all system folders on
Windows, or search for the file and folder names I gave you.

Here's why I want to reinstall Ubuntu:
I have Ubuntu 8.04 - Hardy Heron - April 2008 on a Pentium III (Coppermine)
with 512 megs (502,4) of memory, much space available on my HDD (24,3
gigabites) and everything was going fine until the October updates that I
did. Since that my computer is REALLY slow.

Has no bearing on backing up Pidgin on any platform.

I found where to see the "History of updates" but I wonder if I can remove
these updates to get back my speed?
If I can and I do it, so I'll never be able to do any further updates to be
sure to don't get back into that slow speed?

I've made research to finaly end at the Ubuntu Forums at
www.ubuntuforums.org but I understand nothing...

Again, has no bearing on backing up and restoring certain Pidgin files.
I'm sorry your computer is slow, but you'll need to take that up in a
Linux User Group or Windows User Group mailing list.

So, for me that look easyer to reinstall everything. I found by myself how
to do backup for everything except for Pidgin.

I told you how to do it on XP. Should be the same for any NT based
Windows version.

I'm now still with a really slow computer with Ubuntu 8.04 and I want to
reinstall everything because I don't understand the way I can find what I
could do...

That's why I want to be able to do a complete pidgin backup. Kind of copy
files from my actual Ubuntu and to past them after I reinstaled Ubuntu.

Thanks again for your help!

Eric

Again, you running (or wanting to run, I'm not sure where you are at on

I gave you a list of the files you'll need, I gave you the directory
path to where those files should be on any install of Windows XP (or
really any NT based Windows OS). Perhaps someone running Vista, Win95-ME

I don't know, I assume all mailing lists I join are public. Just safe
that way. And even if it wasn't a public mailing list with tons of

AFAIK, Pidgin Encryption, like OTR, is not supported by the Pidgin

for assistance BUT if I were to hazard a guess, I would see that the
latest version of the plugin is not backward compatible with the one

Well, Pidgin loads even quicker then that for me and I have several

Good points, but I connect to about 10 accounts, via an anonymous proxy
relay service (SOCKS5) for all but one and it still loads up quicker
then for the OP (and I load it up via a batch file that enables a
debugging log). Connecting, though, is a different story though and I
don't count that as part of load up time. I consider load up time from
the time I click on the quick launch icon to the time I see my buddy

Pidgin Randomly Crashes

2009-12-31 Thread Programmer In Training
Windows XP SP1
Executed through a BAT file (will provide contents on demand) to enable
logging (will provide after I scrub it if asked)
Connects to proxy via Tor client-wide (127.0.0.1:9050)[1]

The only information it gives regarding the crash is the following log
file entry:

(07:00:13) GLib: g_strstr_len: assertion `haystack != NULL' failed

Um, it's not new.
http://www.aboutus.org/RocketMail.com

"In 1997 RocketMail was acquired by Yahoo!. Customers were able to keep
the @rocketmail.com in their email addresses, although an
@rocketmail.com address was not an option for people signing up for a
new email account at Yahoo.com from 1997 until June of 2008. New email
accounts from Yahoo! can now be @yahoo.com, @ymail.com, or @rocketmail.com."

I imagine that your @rocketmail.com address will work fine with the
Yahoo protocol.

MSN changed the protocol. You need to upgrade to 2.6.4. If you cannot
download it, there is nothing we can do.

What protocol are you connecting to? I'm using it just fine for 1 Yahoo
account, two AIM accounts, 2 ICQ accounts, 2 Jabber accounts, 1 MySpace
account, and with the addition of a plugin, Facebook chat (which isn't
supported on this list).

2.6.4 is the latest version of Pidgin.

If your computer is connected to a LAN that routes through a proxy on
the other side of the firewall, you do not have to fill out the proxy
info for Pidgin.

Reinnstall the missing software or reinstall Pidgin. Personally I'd use
a registry cleaner (Piriform has a program that has a good one that I
trust) to clean out any bad entries, then do the reinstall of the
missing software and/or Pidgin.

Keep all replies going to the list. I have it sent to you as well
because I don't know if you're subscribed.

No, that just makes the contacts bigger and shows buddy icons to the
right of their name. Here is a screen shot of what I am talking
about[0]. The first contact (as indicated by the black text) isn't
expanded and only shows the name once (blocked out for privacy). The
second contact (as indicated by the red text) is expanded and will show
the name twice. To disable that for your users, go to each user, right
click on them, and select collapse. If that isn't what your list looks
like, then I'm not sure what's up.

Select a random buddy in your list and start typing "Carl". Pidgin will
advance to the first "Carl" it encounters. If that's not the right one,
if they have last names, continue typing until you find the one you're
looking for.

In complete agreement. This was a problem I was looking forward to
seeing solved in 2.6.5 (I know people who use GTalk and I'd like to be
able to help them through these issues if they are encountered). Telling
people to "revert back to 2.6.4" is not a good solution.

I've used the Skype plugin and I do /not/ recommend it at all. You still
have to have Skype open and logged in to use it. All the plugin does is
merge the buddy list with Pidgin (supposedly, it didn't work at all for
me the way it said it would) to let you know who is and isn't online.
All IMs, Voice and Video stuff is still handled by Skype.

Let me fix that last sentence. As far as I can tell there are no per

Finch On FreeBSD TTY Console

2010-01-31 Thread Programmer In Training
Are there any known issues with Finch on a TTY console (ctrl+F1-F7)?
I've been giving it a go the past few days and according to the man
page, I should be able to use alt+ any number of letters for various
functions (like alt+c to close a window). None of the alt+ controls work
for me. The only thing it catches is ctrl+c and then it asks me if I
want to exit Finch. I ask because whenever I add a new account, I have
to close Finch and reopen it to close the add account window. Is this a
FreeBSD issue or a known issue in Finch (I forget which version exactly
but it's the latest one in ports)?

well the only ctrl-char that works is ctrl-c for closing. I'll try
esc-char next time I'm on my box. If this works, the man pages should be
updated to note the different behavior on FreeBSD (or perhaps a FreeBSD
specific manpage).

I wouldn't be surprised if I was the only one having this issue. I've
hosed my installation at least once, and have now hosed FreeBSD ports
(infinite loop for three packages/dependencies).

By the way, that works. esc+[char] gets desired results (when the esc
key works, time for a new keyboard it seems).

No, I mean I really have to mash down on my esc key to get it to send a
signal.

One of my geek buddies says that having to use esc instead of alt =

Pidgin does have a log viewer, it's easy to bring up and if you've
enabled logging, you'll find chat logs (I recommend plain-text logging
as HTML just unnecessarily bloats the log file). I'm not sure it will be
real time, but um, what's the point in viewing chat logs in real time?
If you're adding to the log in an active discussion, the active chat
window could be described as a real time log viewer.

Hope this helps.

There's a preference (don't know exactly where it is at the moment) that
allows you to strip formatting off all incoming conversations. I started
having that problem and once I did that, no problem. (:

I recently had to adjust my AIM and ICQ accounts to not use SSL for
login. Have you checked to see if you're using SSL to login?

I'm using Pidgin 2.6.5, if you're not using it I would recommend an
update although it sounds like you're using a fairly recent version
(hopefully downloaded via http://www.pidgin.im/ ) so there shouldn't be
any issue there.

If any of your accounts are using SSL to login, disable that as there
seems to be some new issue with it (I've recently encountered it, as
stated above, so I think it's a protocol thing and not a Pidgin thing).

Not sure if you're on the list, CCing you if you aren't. Direct all
replies to the list, please.

I was just going by the solution that I came to on my own. While the
accepted solution by the majority might be to uncheck clientLogin, I
don't feel proper in suggesting something that I didn't try.

Agreed. I was unaware that a consensus had been reached, though. I've
not been able to reply (or even check) my email for almost two weeks
before about two days ago. When I downloaded all the mail that had
collected in my account, I just marked all as read and jumped in at the
next question that I had a solution for. My apologies for not being on

I have no idea what Hardy Hedgehog is, to be honest. As for the issues
you are having, I don't use Google Talk so I cannot help with that, and
I'm not having any Problems with Yahoo (my problems were with AIM and
ICQ and to some extent, Jabber).

No kidding. I strip /all/ incoming formatting and apply no formatting

Pidgin versions?

What operating system?

AIM has issues which are addressed on the front page of the Pidgin site
(http://www.pidgin.im), if that doesn't solve your issues (after you've
made sure you have the latest Pidgin) for AIM at least.

Not sure about the other protocols (do you even have accounts on the

Haha, I found, in the Options menu for the message window, the timestamp
option. Not sure where it disappeared to. I would swear it wasn't there
when I sent that last message.

My guess (and what I would do barring another, easier solution) would be
to either try a repair install or uninstalling/reinstalling. I've never
had a problem with spell check installing but I haven't
installed/updated since the last release.

I don't IRC much so I don't know, but I use the same plugin. I'll get on

I just registered and throughout the whole process I had timestamps
available. Perhaps someone with WinXP could verify?

Is that an option in the official client? I haven't used it in so long I
haven't a clue. I'd be surprised if it were and hasn't already been
incorporated in Pidgin. That would be a very useful option and I'd be
willing to file a feature request based off your email (if that would be

Those functions you are talking about (appear visible and appear
permanently offline) are part of the protocol. If it isn't part of the
official protocol, Pidgin cannot implement it, if I'm understanding
Daniel right, because there is nothing there to implement.

To me, and I've had similar issues in the past, it's dependent on the
version of Pidgin being used and the protocol involved (or even the
service providing the protocol).

For services like Facebook Chat and Yahoo, the buddy lists are stored on
the server; the XMPP interface on FB chat will not recognize changes
made in Pidgin in my experience, you have to make the changes on
Facebook via the edit friends option under the account drop down.

The same might be true of Yahoo, I'm uncertain as I've not had issue to
take anyone off my friends list there. OTOH, AIM should recognize the
changes. I haven't had issue with AIM and Pidgin in several versions.
ICQ and MSN are a different story entirely and I've not had issue with
removing or changing the groups friends are in from those two services
because I've not tried to do either operation in at least 2 releases.

So, FB Chat XMPP (and I imagine the unsupported plugin): Have to go
through FB's site to mess with that list.

Yahoo, ICQ, MSN: Not sure what recourse you would have there, hopefully
someone with a more fluid list than my own will step up.

AIM: Should be no issue.

XMPP (Non-FB): Should also be no issue there.

All others: I don't use 'em so I don't know.

CCing you, though it seems you are subscribed to the list. Please keep
all mails going to the list so others can benefit from what is learned
(I don't believe you are the first person from Oracle to post to the list).

So, you're using Jabber. Who's Jabber implementation are you using? I
only use jabber.org, LiveJournal's and FaceBook's jabber servers (I used
to use Google's, too). Both the LJ and FB buddy lists are populated by
the lists on the service itself (e.g. my friends on LJ or FB make up the
friends list).

Facebook is known to restrict restructuring of the list to using the
edit friends function found on it's site (possibly because of XMPP <->
API linkage). I believe the only restriction from LJ is moving their bot
("Frank") from the default buddies category.

Are you using an Oracle-provided XMPP service? If so, you probably want
to get in touch with the folks who have implemented and maintain the
service to see if they allow restructuring of the buddy list. I know
that Jabber.org does not restrict, nor does GTalk (Google's XMPP based
chat service).

I had to rollback as well, for the same reason. You can get the previous
version here:

No need to rollback, check out:

Use that to replace what was installed with 2.7. Problem solved.
