twin email accounts

2017-08-27 Thread Vincent Smith

Dear Sea Monkey,

I had a scour on your web page on this issue, but couldn't come up with
anything. I have Sea Monkey 2.48 on my late 2013 iMAC, now running
osSierra. My problem is, that in the email window the left hand side
window has all my email accounts etc in it, but I have two versions of
some of the accounts - one being POP and the other IMAP. I did this to
try and retrieve some accidentally deleted local folders that once
existed in Thunderbird, but to no avail. So, to take one of these, I
have a POP email account (The above email address), and another IMAP
version - both using the same password. The intention was to sort things
out, and then keep the POP accounts, but delete the IMAP accounts. It
suits me better, as I do not want to have anything to do with iCloud -
or Google for that matter. However, when I try to go into the setup
facility, I cannot check which one is which - so as to delete the right
one safely. I get an error message saying that "there is already an
account with this email address" etc., and it won't let me in to the
necessary information. Is there a way around this, or at least how can I
correctly identify which version of the account is which?

Kind Regards,

Vince Smith.

Consistently crashing

I am running Sea-monkey 2.46 on Windows 7 64 bit (completely updated with
all updates). Sea-monkey consistently crashes every time I log out of my

and "supposedly" sends it to you all. This has been happening for over 7
months now, I have never received any inquiry from you folks as to what
follow on info you might need. Do you get these reports, or are these
self-generating reports from sea-monkey just ending up in some black hole

no longer able to compact folders

2017-08-27 Thread Roy Carlson
I am using SeaMonkey version 2.46.

I haven't been able to delete any email messages for a few weeks now.

I have usually had no problem deleting old messages from trash and
compacting the folder. But I'm not able to compact the folders. That ends
up freezing my Windows 7 desktop.

The first message I get is: "The folder Trash is full, and can't hold any
more messages. To make room for more messages, delete any old or unwanted
mail and compact the folder."

For years that has worked without problem. Now, I've been getting an error
message saying something can't write and I don't have privileges. (Sorry, I
can't recreate the message at the moment.)

Any solutions?

I actually compared the two setups in about:config, and made sure
that they were alike. It did not help. Since Thunderbird works, I
can just use that, and also webmail (to get rid of the trash).

OK, next question: In the Server Settings, does it say "Server Type:
POP

I chose IMAP. Maybe the next version of SeaMonkey will work better.

It's not SeaMonkey. IMAP works with SeaMonkey. I may float an idea that
maybe the server requires some kind of "register device" as Google does?
Have noticed that when folks bungle the setup at the start that
sometimes you have to clear the account before it will successfully
work. Try a temporary new profile.

What is a "register device"? Why did the setup work with Thunderbird
and not with SeaMonkey if such a thing is needed? I am not too
concerned about its security since I read everything as plain text.

I just tried a newer version of SeaMonkey with a fresh profile. I could
still not add a new IMAP account to it. I give up. I shall just use
Thunderbird or webmail.

EE, was it that you were not able to add any sort of new e-mail account or that
you couldn't add an IMAP account??

Re: Page Setup has gone wacky

2017-08-27 Thread Bill Spikowski

THIS TIME -- with the attachments!

I've developed an odd problem when trying to print from Seamonkey 2.46 (both
browser and mail clients) on a WinXP machine. My Win7 machines behave normally.

The Print Preview box always the user to select 'portrait' or 'landscape'
orientation even before selecting a printer. In the last few days, those
choices are no longer their original shape -- they're drastically elongated.
See attached screenshot.

Selecting a different scale does change the scale of the material to be
printed, but it doesn't affect the odd paper sizes.

If I ignore the problem and print anyway, the material that shows up in Print
Preview appears in the upper right corner of the printed page (see attached
example).

Where does SM store the paper sizes that it displays in Print Preview? It seems
to be separate from my Windows printer settings, since the correct paper sizes
show up for each printer in Windows (under Printing Preferences), while the
oddball sizes show up when I select File | Print | Properties from within
Seamonkey -- but even when I change the paper sizes there, the elongated page
sizes print out on paper and still show up in Print Preview.

Are the folders in the SeaMonkey root (i.e., where you find the
seamonkey.exe file)? Or are they in your profile (i.e., where you find
such files as prefs.js and places.sqlite)?

In my SeaMonkey root, I have 9 folders, which have five subfolders among
them.  In my primary profile (I now have five), there are 21 folders;
some of them have subfolders. All that is WITHOUT using SeaMonkey's
mail-news capabilities.

Instead of SeaMonkey, I use Thunderbird for mail, newsgroups, and RSS
feeds. My Thunderbird root has 9 folders. My Thunderbird profile (I
have only one) has 18 folders. Only one of those 18 in my profile is
for both mail and RSS feeds, and only one is for newsgroups. Among the
other 16 folders in the profile are 13 subfolders plus additional
sub-subfolders.

Yes, there are a number of these folders. Here is a sample (1/4) of my folder
listings. Those without a number of emails or files are the ones that appear
to relate to the supporting files for SM.

Re: Bookmarks sidebar

2017-08-27 Thread Roger Fink

 Original Message

On 7/20/17 at 11:38 PM, Roger Fink's prodigious digits fired off with
great aplomb:

As I sure some folks are aware, the hotkey F9 will toggle the bookmarks
sidebar on and off in SeaMonkey. I'd like to be able to do this by
mouse-clicking an icon on the menu or navigation bar, but unlike in
Firefox or PaleMoon this seems not to be possible in SeaMonkey, as the
offering in the customization panel will transpose the contents of the
bookmarks dropdown menu to the sidebar.

Not getting what you mean. If I customize the nav menu by putting the
"Bookmarks" button there, clicking it displays the exact same thing as
clicking the button on the menu bar.

The difference here is that if you have your bookmarks organized into
subfolders, the sidebar will display them as part of the overall tree
within the governing width of the panel.

Agreed.

In the dropdown menu there are
two separate panels one for the folders and one for the bookmarks, and
there is no governing width for the display, which for me is about 1/3
the width of my screen, so there really is no point in toggling the
sidebar.

Again, not sure what you mean. In the drop down menu I see only one
panel, my bookmarks folders, and some actual bookmarks/URLs. Hover over
a folder and it expands to the right and shows any sub-folders and
bookmarks.

I couldn't find any workarounds, including running the FireFox bookmarks
toggler extension through the SeaMonkey extension converter. Maybe
someone can suggest a workaround.

Since I don't have a cloud address at the ready I am going to try,
probably unsuccessfully, to post a screenshot which explains it better.
Actually, my bookmarks sidebar is on the right but I disabled UserChrome
to take this. If this doesn't display all I can say is that I have no
idea why our results are different.

Get Messages Not Working on ONE PC only

not through Seamonkey mail. Profile lists pluginreg tnef file.
Should I keep that?
Get Messages responds with continual error that the folder is being

registry check and other maintenance.
Reverted back to 2.40. File places.sqlite.corrupt file never present in
profiles.

Went back to 2.46.
Still not receiving emails. Receiving same error and slow progress bar.

How do I identify and correct the file, download or issue that affected
this?
How do I backup all existing mail to an external hard drive so if I
completely remove Seamonkey and reinstall, I will not lose saved email?

What to do? It's useless right now.

SEND MESSAGE ERROR: "Sending of the mail failed"`

I'm suddenly getting this message regularly when trying to send emails from my
XP computer:

Sending of the message failed.
The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP)
mail.greenviewdata.com timed out. Try again.

Is there a way I could lengthen the 'time out' period?

The SM default time-out has always been adequate for me, going back to forever,
but maybe not any more!

I'm having no trouble sending out emails using my gmail account in Seamonkey --
but then they show my gmail address as the sender, which I don't want since I
dislike gmail and almost never use it.

I've also had intermittent problems sending messages from Seamonkey in recent
months on my Win7 computers -- but usually I get a password dialog box; if I
reenter my password, the message goes out. My new problem on XP might have the
same cause, but without the ability to reenter my password to work around it.

Problem Printing from Email

2017-08-27 Thread Robin Kelley
*Just in the past few days, the text when printing from email is so
small it's not even readable.

Tech Support at Canon (the printer) verified that the correct printer
driver was installed in the computer (Windows 10).

We tried printing from other places, like WORD and Windows Test Page and
those came out fine with appropriate-sized text.

We also copied and pasted email into a Word document and that printed
out fine.

Can you please help? This is really serious, and I am not good with the
technology. It's so frustrating not to be able to phone Sea Monkey and
I feel very vulnerable, as it's my only email account (through Hover).

Thank you.

help please

2017-08-27 Thread Systems Engineering
So Composer now in SeaMonkey started with Netscape in the 1990s. Also in
the 1990s starting with WS_FTP, FTP software allowed editing of
Web-pages on the Web, not just on a local computer -- but only in a text
coding window. Can you tell me if there is a way or product that does
both. Editing of a Webpage on the Web, after logging on with your FTP
ID and password, but in a WYSIWYG drag and drop GUI window like the
windows provided in SeaMonkey.

This is needed to keep software like SeaMonkey useful, instead of just
signing up with a Web hosting company like GoDaddy or Wix.com, who
provide an online Webpage editor window in anyone's browser. Software
companies have had 25 years to combine a WYSIWYG editor and FTP login,
to edit Webpages online.

Help please.

"wrong link" messages

2017-08-27 Thread Joseph & Laurie Zaepfel

Hi Sea Monkey folks,

We use Thunderbird for our email program and SeaMonkey for our browser.

I get a large number of emails with links in them. In the past month,
I'd say that over half of the links I click on return some kind of error
message, usually:

 Wrong Link

You have clicked on an invalid link. Please make sure that you have
typed the link correctly. If are copying this link from a mail reader
please ensure that you have copied all the lines in the link.

Today I received a message that was not a group one, but directed to me
from an activity of a family member. It also returned an error message:

bad url - reference number: -6pBDC_nhC7JndElu4fRCA

Unlike the others, where I cannot see the actual link, this one had it
spelled out. I tried it in Google Chrome and was able to get in.

What's going on with my programs that I can no longer click through on
links? I really like your products, but if they prevent me from moving
from one item to another, I might have to reconsider...

Thanks,

Laurie Zaepfel

seamonkey freezes

2017-08-27 Thread JD John Doran

ladies / gentlemen -
my version of seamonkey often freezes when exploring
multiple open tabs simultaneously.
according to task manager, seamonkey begins commanding ever
larger shares of memory
and cpu cycles which i attribute to the pop-up blocker
inherent in the software.
or maybe ad-blocker keeps stacking requests until available
ram memory is exhausted.
either way, i have to shut down the seamonkey process using
task manager process window
and restart my e-mail reader, and usually the processes
resume where i left off.
often, that, too, will stack seamonkey tab requests and i
must return to task manager.
i am running an updated version of windows xp pro 3.1
(latest updates applied).
seamonkey is the most current iteration available, with all
applicable updates.

Cookies in SeaMonkey

2017-08-27 Thread Just4Rebates

I am using version 2.46.
There are many websites that will not work for me unless I set cookies
to "allow all cookies".
Prior the the most recent version(s), which no longer have the option to
ask, I could use almost every website by setting my cookies to "Block
cookies" and "Ask for each cookie".

Not being able to ask for each cookie is a horrible flaw in the software.

Several times, I have cleared all my cookies, allowed all cookies, gone
to a site that was requiring cookies, looked at which cookies I had, and
enabling each of those sites to accept cookies. If the site was not
already on my permissions list, I would go to the site, and use the
Cookie Manager menu option under Tools to allow cookies from the site.
This does not seem to ever work in this latest version.

As I see it, there are two possibilities. One is that SeaMonkey does not
handle cookie permissions properly any more. The other is that an
enormous number of web sites is somehow programming their pages to work
only when ALL cookies are enabled, and not just when cookies for their
site are enabled. I don't even know if the latter is possible
programatically, but it seems very unlikely that it would happen just
when SeaMonkey stopped allowing the option to ask about each cookie.

I do not want to allow all cookies all the time. I have setup files for
SeaMonkey 2.39 and many prior versions.

Should I downgrade to one of these versions to get back the option to
ask for each cookie?

Are there any plans to fix this major flaw in SeaMonkey in future versions?

I love the SeaMonkey interface and the way the settings used to work
before this change, but, if I cannot fix this problem, I may stop using
SeaMonkey.

Please advise me.

I don't like webmails, either, so I use POP mail for my Gmail account

My last comment was about use of plain text and HTML which could play

Interesting. It does make sense that Youtube is able
to provide alternative streams for different platforms,
based on their capability... But I had assumed that

Can you play this old video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HtMHmyKZa0

It's video/mp4; codecs="avc1.4d401e" like the one you posted.

That's an MP4 container with H.264-encoded video.
They don't specify the audio codec, I'll bet AAC.

That "test" video at the above link has unfortunately been removed by
the user.

When you right click on the settings button on the Youtube window, you
get an option for geeks which when selected gives info about the video.
However, it doesn't seem to give the sort of info you cite above. Where
did you get that from?

Yeah, it was in the stats for geeks.

Mime Type: video/mp4; codecs="avc1.4d401e"

mp4 means an MPEG-4 Part 14 container.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4_Part_14

avc1.4d401e means H.264 Main Profile Level 3
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/16363167/html5-video-tag-codecs-attribute

Have a look at that page, it seems pretty nifty.
http://www.leanbackplayer.com/test/h5mt.html

I wonder what kind of sniffing it performs.

Regards.
So you got that test video I referenced to play before it was removed by
the user, so you were able to get that info from the stats for geeks,
right? In my case, that video, and others that won't play DO show some
geek info, but the line labelled "Mime type" shows no data. The videos
that DO play DO show that kind of data.

Unless you've got Kaspersky installed on your machine & configured to
check all web traffic your situation is totally different.

see, for example, https://bugs.chromium.org/p/project-zero/issues/detail?id=978
Kasperky installs a WFP driver to intercept all outgoing HTTPS
connections. They effectively proxy SSL connections, inserting their
own certificate as a trusted authority in the system store and then
replace all leaf certificates on-the-fly. This is why if you examine a
certificate when using Kaspersky Antivirus, the issuer appears to be
"Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal Root".

The term "open source library for working with video on the web"

Definition of "software library" from The Free Dictionary: "a
collection of standard routines used in computer programs, usually
stored as an executable file."

So the sentence really isn't ungrammatical or ambiguous. You just
have to know how to parse it.

Yes, as you say, in the "simplest possible terms", but sometimes
"simple" becomes "simplistic", and therefore less than clear. Saying
that you just have to know how to parse it is like saying that you
just have to understand written English! With the sort of stuff I'm
talking about in this thread, you shouldn't have to parse and
syntactically analyze, the meaning should be clear without having to
resort to re-reading, cogitation, etc. Don't want to make too much of
that one single sentence above, but I've gotta say that I've found
the web overflowing with masses of stuff about this or that aspect of
computer and web technology and new developments in these areas, and
that a huge proportion of it begs more questions than it answers
because it fails to comply with even the most basic principles of
technical or expository writing, or even with basic English grammar
and syntax. Given that much of it is there for the benefit of
non-techie, ordinary users rather than geeks, coders, developers, or
whatever who would know a lot more, this is very frustrating. ...

Yeah, well, two more points:

1) The vast majority of people on this forum are not professional
writers, so you have to adjust your expectations.
Perhaps I should have made it explicitly clear - although I though it
would have been clear from the context of what I said - that I am NOT
referring to what people write in fora like this newsgroup or others
that I subscribe to. I was referring to what you find on websites.
2) It's perfectly normal in any technical field to encounter
specialized jargon, and it would be unnatural and also difficult to
follow if posters avoided that jargon.

Again, NOT talking about posters, as I point out above.

videos. If Chrome has something in it that does that running on XP,
why doesn't FF and SM? Now, I can think of various possible answers
to that question, but i can't identify the correct answer.

The following also applies to SeaMonkey:

"[10] To avoid patent issues, support for MPEG 4, H.264 and MP3 is not
built directly into Firefox. Instead it relies on support from the OS
or hardware (the hardware also needs to be able to support the profile
used to encode the video, in the case of MP4). Firefox supports these
formats on the following platforms: Windows Vista+ since Firefox 22.0,
Android since Firefox 20.0, Firefox OS since Firefox 15.0, Linux since
Firefox 26.0 (relies on GStreamer codecs) and OS X 10.7 since Firefox
35.0."

Thanks indeed for the above link to that stuff - hadn't come across it
myself, very interesting but also very complex, still reading and slowly
trying to get my head around it. thanks again.

How does the Cisco OpenH264 plug-in factor in?

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/open-h264-plugin-firefox
https://github.com/cisco/openh264/

Looks like OpenH264 was initially used only for WebRTC,
but later also for other web contents?

Can you look at the certificate? If the issuer is "Kaspersky
Anti-Virus Personal Root" and you've already tried reinstalling their
root cert your best bet might be opening a support ticket w/ kaspersky
