The late George Alec? When did he die? What a bummer -- I would have

Aw man, sorry to hear that, Fortran. Nothing terminal, I hope.

I agree with Alexander's advice. Sell your lesser stuff first if you have
to. You can always find another big-box Ultima II, but that Drash is pretty
irreplaceable. If you're auctioning stuff, let the other Dragons know, and
mention in your listings that it's for medical expenses: You might be
surprised by how generous people are. I remember when (the late) George

really came out to help him.

Wow, RBBS-PC, the good old days! I don't know if it would have any

This might lead to a good thread. What was your favorite BBS program?
Was it the venerable PC-Board, the easy to navigate Searchlight, the

I actually don't remember any RBBS boards in my area. But then, I got
into BBSing a little late (c. 1989) and I may just not remember that
many BBS program names any more.

I don't know that the software made a difference to me. I cared more
about the people and atmosphere (or the games). The ones I seemed to
call the most were PC-Board and WWIV, IIRC.

Re: [SWCollect] Is nothing sacred?

2002-10-16 Thread Alexander Zoller

I don't really want to see him getting NARUed. The message he sent me is
definitely in violation with eBay's rules against unsolicited emails, but I
told him very clearly I don't want to receive any further information, and
asked him to strike me off his list of recipients. Which he did.

There was a more severe case a while back... some guy sent me like 50
emails (all from _different_ eBay accounts, mind you) for some retail
games, which strangely included just the CD. Reported all those accounts to
eBay, and they were removed within an hour.

Indeed. I remember reading something about use of ebay member email
adresses for unsolicited emails is prohibited, but can't be bothered
right now to spend the next hours wading through the 1100 ebay
commandments ;-)

Which brings me to another train of thought: Imagine a powerseller, who
might have thousands of valid and proven email adresses in his list,
trying to sell them. That would probably bring them a good buck.

Definitely a good one, in the sense that you'd be sparing the winner

being harrassed with requests for image copies. But do offer to

HTML version of the final auction page after close (with the winning
bidder's info edited out of course) so people can at least check on the
other bidders and get assurance that you're not using shilling to
 drive the
price up. (Then again, you have a good rep as one of the Dragons,
 hopefully
this wouldn't be necessary. But it never hurts to be proactive and
 assure

Hmm. I'm not sure about that. Letting everyone know who bid, except
for the winning bidder seems to me to be killing the idea of a private
auction. Maybe if I gave the list to the winning bidder since they are
the one who would be most vulnerable to shills.

I'll need to ponder your idea for a bit from the perspective of a

Talk to Eli Tomlinson. He seems to have done a good job of promoting

One of my problems is that a fair number of the more valuable games my

help people find Ultima games that we first started talking with each
other.) So a number of things we might sell have a sentimental value.

On the pragmatic hand, given the economy, people just aren't paying
the prices they used to for most of the stuff we collected (Ultima,
Infocom). Infocom folios, for example, just aren't fetching what they
used to and Origin seems to have done an excellent job of killing the

All of this is a long-winded way of saying I think you have an
excellent idea, but I'll have to figure out which games I have that
would work well with your idea.

Thanks for your thoughts on the subject.

As a user I preferred connecting to a PC-Board system. They were
usually easy to get around. I miss the BBSes at times. They always
felt a lot more personal than the 'net does in general. However, the
vast resources of the 'net obviously win hands down.

[SWCollect] eBay fees

2002-10-16 Thread Lee K. Seitz

This is kind of off topic, but I have an eBay question someone here
might be able to answer. Has anyone created an Excel (or MS Works)
spreadsheet that you can enter amounts into and have it subtract eBay
(and possibly even PayPal) fees so you can find a break even point on
items?

Obviously, you probably don't want to put stuff on eBay if you don't
think you'll make a profit, but I have some items that I figure either
will go for a good amount or next to nothing because they're not the
standard stuff you find on eBay (like that RBBS book). I've got to
get rid of stuff, but I can't afford to lose money right now, so I
need to figure out the minimum bids. I'm sure I could make one
myself, but if someone else has already done the work and is willing
to share . . . .

ObSWCollect: Since MAME gained popularity, ROM images for prototypes
and unreleased games have started to appear quite a bit. Have many
unreleased computer games made it to the public since the Internet
became big? For example, I'm curious how far they ever got on the
computer version of Awful Green Things from Outer Space that Steve
Jackson announced some years ago and then I never heard any more
about.
