RE: Word 2013 tutorial

2015-05-17 Thread Rod Hutton via Talk
Hi Neville,

Just a brief reply to your message about navigation of the ribbon.
Personally, very often, I can't even begin a navigation of the ribbon using
those one, two, three keystroke strings which Marc or others have
recommended.
So, what I do is use Alt, which calls up the ribbon, use arrow left and
right to pick the proper tab, and use the tabkey repeatedly to navigate
precisely to the command I need, and then spacebar to activate the control
I need and arrow keys and Enter as necessary.
I have noticed that this approach can give different verbosity than you get
by all this single-letter shortcutting, and, as I say, the navigation
shortcutting doesn't always work anyway.
I just thought I'd mention this, my friend.
Oh, and by the way, I'm still using Office 2010.

Good luck,

Rod

When Marc is moving through the ribbon menu items, his syn is giving

I am not getting all of this info and have had a look through the

Hi, Nick.
Regarding the maximizing issue you're having, it is likely that the
window you're trying to maximize is already maximized, which is why it's
being reported as being disabled. I can see where that would get
confusing ...

Re: You-tube

2015-05-17 Thread Dave via Talk
If I am using Win Eyes 9.1, I get very mixed results,
mostly bad.

I still have an old system running Win XP and win eyes 8.4. Every
time I log into Youtube on this machine, I always am told my Browser
is old and soon it will no longer be supported. I go ahead and go
about my way, doing searches, and doing the research I do.

If you are only able to use 9.1, about all I can say is move around
on Youtube slowly, and even then, you might have Speech disappear, or
the system lock up.

I have used 9.1 successfully on Youtube, but not very often.
I also have problems locating the Search Results after doing a Search
on Youtube.

With 9.1, I get what seems like everything, but the results.

I do not know if this is true, but someone told me that Youtube and
other Web Sites have a variety of Home Screens they display,
depending upon the Browser the Customer is using.

The Machine I use with 9.1 has I.E. 11, and my old XP system has I.E. 8.

I hear there are a lot of Ads on Youtube, and these Ads cause
problems for Win Eyes.

I do not know if Youtube has a Subscription Membership, where the Ads
disappear if you are a Subscriber, for a monthly fee.I have been
tempted to see if there is such a Membership, because I use Youtube a lot.

If you happen to discover any Tricks that can be used, be sure to
share them here, as others will benefit.

Re: A weird one

2015-05-17 Thread Larry Higgins via Talk
chris, please don't think that I personally thought you were suggesting
that I play around with administration settings. Believe me, I would
never go through all that, taking unnecessary risks with my system to
accommodate a function such as Send too from a browser. Frankly, if it
means anything at all to you, I think that it is incumbent on Microsoft
not to confuse the issue by making such suggestions as I received when
trying to carry out such a simple task. Anyway, try not to take it too
personal.

BTW, I am using Avira here, and have received no indication that I have
any viruses. Must admit though that I am not using any Malware
protection of any kind. Pretty reckless huh.

I will ask you, and anyone else who wishes to offer there good advice.
Does anybody recommend Defender as being reasonably reliable when it
comes to protection from either viruses or Malware?

I was a user of Nod32 about 5 years ago, and thought it was giving me
all the protection I would need, but a virus got past that one too.
There Tech Support staff directed me, even sent me a file to combat the
virus, but it didn't work. I tried getting rid of it manually, like an
idiot, and ended up having to put my computer in the shop in order to
get it cleaned up. That experience taught me that people swear by virus
protection programs until they swear at them.

Now I know that virus protection is necessary, and that even free virus
protection is better than none, but I must admit that I have a pretty
low level of trust these days when it comes to these kinds of programs.
I mean, I was really rather disappointed with Nod32. Now, I do realize
that nothing on earth is perfect, but I guess this kind of compares to
eating at a restaurant, where you find the food is good and tasty, only
to later discover that you have food poisoning. You just never quite
get over it, even though you realize that everybody, even a restaurant
probably deserves a second chance. You just don't want to take the
chance yourself.

OK, that is quite enough from me this time around.

And don't worry Chris, I'm sure you meant no harm, and as long as I've
been using a 'puter, I think the Onus (if that is anywhere near the
proper usage) is really on me not to rush headlong and make stupid and
idiotic mistakes. Now hopefully my own accumulated wisdom will hold for
a very long time to come .

Take care,

Larry

No! No! No!
What-ever you do, do not start messing about with your permissions on
your
system. They are assigned the way they are assigned for a reason.
They are

put there for your security. You definitely do not want to run as an
administrator either, windows will prompt you when administrator
privileges

are required and User Account Control will definitely protect you. your
first idea is good. If it is not broken. Do not fix it
as for your second problem programs such as Internet Explorer do not
have
permissions to access the desktop and therefore they cannot send
shortcuts

to the desktop nor do you want them to this is to protect you against
malware and other things that could be used to access your file system
through these means. This is normal behavior and every Windows box will
exhibit the same behavior. I just tested it myself on three separate
boxes

and can confirm that this is normal behavior
so this is not strange or odd behavior either. It is the way things are
supposed to be

I agree with Jim that you never never never never never ever! want to change
the permissions yourself by hand manually.

Let's get something very clear! I never once said for him to go dabbling
around changing permissions himself. Did you even so much as think of
reading my e-mail in full? I doubt it! What I said, for the second time,
was, does he have any sort of software package that would run a disk
maintanence and check, key word, check! I didn't say, repair, I said, check!
the integrety of the disk.

Do you really think with me being A Plus certified, that I'm gonna have
someone do something as stupid as manually modifying disk permissions? Give
me a break, for crying out loud! That's a real nice way to corrupt your
system! You're just asking for it!

I suppose next, you're gonna tell me that it's a real bad idea for him to
put the Windows DVD in his drive, go to the run dialog, and then type:

sfc /fixall

Really?

I was just trying to help!

Chris.

No! No! No!
What-ever you do, do not start messing about with your permissions on your
system. They are assigned the way they are assigned for a reason. They are
put there for your security. You definitely do not want to run as an
administrator either, windows will prompt you when administrator
privileges

are required and User Account Control will definitely protect you. your
first idea is good. If it is not broken. Do not fix it
as for your second problem programs such as Internet Explorer do not have
permissions to access the desktop and therefore they cannot send shortcuts
to the desktop nor do you want them to this is to protect you against
malware and other things that could be used to access your file system
through these means. This is normal behavior and every Windows box will
exhibit the same behavior. I just tested it myself on three separate boxes
and can confirm that this is normal behavior
so this is not strange or odd behavior either. It is the way things are
supposed to be

Hi: I changed the subject to narrow this particular problem discussion.
OK:
Thinking on this I thought I would first try and figure out where phantom
reading might occur and why.
First phantom speech could be coming from WE reading something under the
Mouse Cursor as Chip mentioned but why would WE read something under the
Mouse Cursor if I do not press the mouse, numpad, keys to read anything and,
in fact have pressed some standard key on the keyboard?
Chip mentioned that WE will try and read, think it was, tool tips
automatically which means WE is watching for things to automatically happen
on the screen and read something based on screen activity rather than just
the press of a keyboard key.
Now, I have unchecked the relevant option in the WE Control Panel to disable
this from happening but it still happens, errant reading of items from
someplace on the screen outside of where focus is suppose to be.
It happens in both Internet Explorer and in a standard Desktop Application
so not related to Internet Explorer.
So, outside of reading Tool Tips automatically, what else is suppose to be
read automatically by WindowEyes without being a response to a keyboard
action or what may be read under the Mouse or the WE Cursor automatically in
response to a non mouse or WE Cursor keyboard event being requested by
pressing a Numpad key (mouse cursor or WE Cursor keys)?
Knowing just a little about WE Scripting WE has to be executing a speek
command at the wrong time to actually speak the phantom item.
Could it be WE trying to read something under the Mouse Cursor or WE Cursor
or could it be some buffering problem and is there a test I can do to figure
out which, or neither, of these may be behind the problem?

No! No! No!
What-ever you do, do not start messing about with your permissions on your
system. They are assigned the way they are assigned for a reason. They are
put there for your security. You definitely do not want to run as an
administrator either, windows will prompt you when administrator privileges
are required and User Account Control will definitely protect you. your
first idea is good.

Hello Rob, and thanks for your suggestion.

With the exception of putting a shortcut for my favorites folder on the
desktop, I did what you suggested by using the send too option for the
favorites folder entry. I do use this method quite often when wanting to
make desktop shortcuts, and would have done so in this instance immediately
if I hadn't been rather obsessed with the weirdness in the favorites menu in
IE. I just can't figure out what might be causing this behavior, and
especially its theoretical explanation Courtesy of Windows. I've never had
that happen for as long as I've been a 'puter user, and that's been a long
time.

Someone mentioned the possibility of faulty permissions, but I dunno.
Since I am the only user of this PC, then I guess I should make all
permissions wide open, and I wouldn't have to put up with the nagging every
time I want to perform a simple function such as deleting a file, or
installing a program. OK, I know, installing apps or programs is a pretty
serious consideration, but again, it's just me after all. But even after all
these years, I'm still Leary of messing too much with permissions, as
strange as that might seem. Kind of along the lines of if it aint broke
don't fix it.

On the whole though, I think I like your suggestions for creating favorites
shortcuts rather than using the send too option in IE's favorites menu. But
still, this function shouldn't return a response like that one. I'm still
somewhat baffled.

Anyway, I really appreciate your help.

Thanks,

Larry

Hello,
if you could explain exactly what you were hoping to accomplish. We might be
better able to assist you. For example, if you're attempting to reinstall
factory settings you would want to go to the file menu in the window-eyes
control panel and go down to the factory sets option the shortcut for this
is F. This will allow you to reinstall any factory set files that you wish.
If on the other hand you would like to start with a completely fresh user
profile, simply delete the window-eyes folder found in your user folder,
with window-eyes not running. Of course, restart window-eyes and a new
folder will be created and the default scripts will be installed. If you're
attempting to accomplish something else. Please do let us know.
I do hope this helps!

Hi,

Here's what the manual says about Reset:
R = Reset Settings
Choosing this option will cause Window-Eyes to revert to the settings you
previously saved to disk. This is especially useful if you make some changes
you do not like, or you inadvertently modify a setting that has negative
consequences. Note that this option will not reset Window-Eyes to factory
defaults; it only loads the settings you last saved to disk.

So, it sounds like it simply reloads the current set file.

Hi Larry,

Actually, it's Rod, like a fishing rod. Smile
You know, I just got the same message as you did when I tried it.
I think this means it's not the recommended way of doing it as far as
Windows is concerned.
To be honest, I don't use this method of copying and icon to the desktop if
I'm working with the Favorites menu.
What I would do is choose the Copy option from the context menu rather than
Send to, and then paste it onto the desktop.
If I try this, it works every time.
