Yes: I agree with this. One of the suggestions I gave as part of the fscast is exactly this. I'd chuck it on to my Varioultra (oops sorry VFO) and browse through as part of my commute - for example. It could be a set of files loaded as a subfolder into a JFW main folder at time of install. Ah yes: but are all these blind people suited to employment. VFO has blind people on staff, and like any business - it can only employ a finite number of people GW Micro employed blind people. I remember the flair brought to training by the late Clarence Wayley. (apologise if last name is not correct) and we had frequent input from Jeremy. The real requirement in this industry is the right people with the right skills. I am sure that VFO believes that its staff are the right people with the right skills. Based solely on the moaning I've seen of late, some of you moaners would not be the right people with the right skills. But - perhaps yo deserve a chance. Re: whole migrating situation
And, if you buy a new car - separate model and brand from the old one you have been driving the last ten years, do you then expect the car manufacturer to run a driving class for you? All for free? Or, even worse, do you expect them to pay your driver's license and all the training to get it? Agreed, a few cheat-sheets had been a nice thing to have in place. I have listened to the short tutorials provided from the migration site, and though they are both informative and helpful, many of us might have better result from some quick reference material. But if you need hands-on training, and even individual training, that is (and has always been) your choice, and your cost. Or, why not ask around in your local vicinity, and see if some experienced users would be willing to give you a Saturday afternoon for free, across the coffee-table. GW, AISquared, and now VFO - they all have thousands of users around the globe. It is impossible that all should have individual training. A 24/7 customer service? Sure, would be nice. But it would need to be organized a whole lot different from what the normal market structure is alike. It would have to be on a Call-For-basis. Or, do you expect them to pay someone an hourly pay, just to sit in the office and await for someone to happen to call in, or asking questions on Email? If you are unable to take the time to listen to a few hours of training material, even at any convenient time for yourself, how come you would be able to set aside any time for hands-on training? If it is more a matter of you not being able to grasp what is told in a pre-recorded or pre-written instructional material, then I do see why you are calling for hands-on training, one-to-one. But then your whole argument about the time-issue, does fall on rocky ground. If again, you are looking for someone to answer your questions in a quick and effecient way, 24/7, I'd say this list is a great opportunity. Agreed, a good Jaws list, with friendly attitude, would have been great; and might exist. A bit of active participation from the VFO group, sure would not have hurt, at least in the couple of months the migration offer is valid, and maybe a very short period thereafter - to catch up with the very last migrators. So your query might be valid, but keep it factual and realistic. On 5/17/2017 2:57 PM, Loy via Talk wrote: > Some one has to pay the trainers! You don't learn by reading manuals you learn by practicing. If I have a problem with Verizon I can call them 24/7, granted they know nothing about screen readers. There are plenty of blind people out there who are not working who could be hired by these screen readers and work from home helping when you call for tech support. RE: whole migrating situation
I understand, however however all screen reading companies should try to work together it would really help. You and Aaron were always helpful when you had a web page problem and it would be nice if you and Aaron could push vfo to do a window-eyes keyboard layout for jaws. Companies need to have 24 hour tech support since blind people are on the computer at all hours like sighted people. I work all day and when I get home the last thing that I want to do is listen to tutorials, there should be a cheat sheet with all the jaws key strokes. -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+rkurlan=schools.nyc@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Doug Geoffray via Talk Sent: Wednesday, May 17, 2017 8:17 AM To: Orlando Enrique Fiol <of...@verizon.net>; Window-Eyes Discussion List <talk@lists.window-eyes.com> Subject: RE: whole migrating situation Orlando, Just to be clear, Dan and I sold GW Micro to Ai Squared. RE: whole migrating situation
While the main competitor of JFW may be gone, others are emerging. You’ve still got choice. It may not be the choice you would like to make, but, the playing field is changing. Neither NVDA, or System Access was around when Window-Eyes and JFW came out. Back then, you had Slimware Window Bridge and ASAW from MicroTalk (although that one didn’t last as long). Too, wasn’t there Artic Win Vision, though that may have only been for Windows 3.1. Anyway, Window-Eyes and JFW were the major players from that era that stayed around the longest. Now, there’s still NVDA, System Access, and SuperNova. SuperNova needs to play catch-up, a little, but, it is an option. They seem willing to accommodate users who want to migrate to their products, as they do provide alternate keyboard layouts. Narrator is maturing, and may be a force to be reckoned with. So, no monopoly here, yet. Just business. The same thing happened in the Long Distance and local phone markets. The AT field is no different, whether we like it or not. RE: whole migrating situation
We have a monopoly now, since eventually ie will be gone and everyone will have to use Microsoft edge and if jaws is the only screne reader that can work with Microsoft edge what can you do? If Microsoft decides to change windows to do updates and office which they did when they introduced the ribbon things became harder. -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+rkurlan=schools.nyc@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Darrell Bowles via Talk Sent: Tuesday, May 16, 2017 12:53 PM To: Dennis Long <dennisl1...@gmail.com>; Window-Eyes Discussion List <talk@lists.window-eyes.com> Subject: Re: whole migrating situation Then we have a monopoly, where there is only one option. RE: whole migrating situation
Hi: I am pretty young, (50 this year), so I have not had as much trouble with change as some. Over the years, I have come from DOS to Windows. I started with a demo of Soft Vert. Then, I got ASAP and used the demo for a while. I also tried JAWS for DOS, as well as Vocal-Eyes. For some reason, though, ASAP did what I wanted. In my job, it carried me all the way to 1998 when my company “merged with” (they were actually bought out by) another company. I had already purchased Windows 3.1 with no screen reader, nor a clue as to what to use. Through that time, I bought Slimware Window Bridge, tried out JFW and settled on a demo of ASAW for a while. I upgraded to Windows 95, then, in my job, had to switch to a Windows terminal emulation package, so I got JFW. But, at home, I went with Window-Eyes, because I liked its approach and agreed more with its licensing model. I never thought I’d use a touch device, but, have tried several over the years, using MobileSpeak and VoiceOver on IOS. I’m about to play some more with, what’s its name, Oh, yeah, TalkBack, on an Android phone I’m hoping to inherit from my 12 year-old daughter when she gets her pictures off of it. Memory going. Another 10 years, and I’ll be in trouble. Oh, yes, almost forgot to mention Speakup and Orca on Linux. Haven’t tried Emac Speak yet. I don’t know if I’m a glutton for punishment, or what. I guess I’ve always liked to experiment with things. However, change is not always welcome. There are many of us who just want our computers to work, and we get very used to a certain way of doing things. One thing I applaud GW Micro for doing is their willingness to provide several alternate keyboard layouts for JAWS users and others, not insisting that their way is the best or only way. It may, indeed, be possible to do a kind of Window-Eyes layout for JAWS, but, I’m not sure. Have to study the manual when I get some time. Having a wife and 2 children has put some demands on my time that weren’t there before. Gotta go out to wait for the school bus for my 6 year-old daughter. In its purest form, capitalism is, you have something I want, and I have something you want, let's make a deal! And you the consumer can choose to purchase the product or refuse. What is more free than that? There's no political state telling you what to purchase or what to create. On 5/16/2017 10:32 AM, Darrell Bowles via Talk wrote: > Sold down the river.
