Windows 10 Sounds
Hi, I just installed Windows 10. When I shut down the computer, I used to hear a sound from Windows indicating the system was shutting down. I went into the Sounds aplet and couldn't locate a specific sound for shut down, only for closing a program. Does such a sound exist and if so, where is it? Thanks. Lost Windows 10 sounds
Hi. This morning while perusing the interface to figure out how to check for updates manually, I unintentionally created a problem of having lost all sounds. Here's what happened. I discovered a cumulative update for Windows 10, and decided to manually restart the computer to install it rather than wait until 2:30 a.m. tomorrow morning for the computer to shut down and restart itself. I pressed the restart button to restart the machine and install the update. Now, after the computer restarted, no sounds are generated. Narrator won't even launch. I called the Microsoft disability answer desk and my sighted nephew could see the desktop icons and even do a remote session with the representative. My nephew was on the phone for about an hour and no progress was made. The issue has supposedly been escalated to a higher level technician for a call back or an e-mail to resolve the issue. This issue happened using Window-eyes 9.2 under Windows 10 on a Dell Xps-8500 desktop pc. My Dell Xps-501-L laptop is working fine after installing the update or else I wouldn't be able to send this e-mail, smile. I hope someone on this list can help. I wonder if the installation of the update when the machine was restarted caused the sounds to be muted. ? Hi, Les. Ever since Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 were released, there is no longer a sound when the computer is shut down. That has been one of my pet peves, smile. I hope this helps. there is no more after windows 7. after 7, the took it out of 8 and up. My wife still is using 7 and has a porky pig sound as the computer shuts down. According to this list, there is no startup or shutdown sound in Windows-10. I just use my WE sounder to reassure me that the process is beginning, then I remain very quiet and patient (which is not easy for me to do) and wait until I hear the computer turn itself off. This may be overkill but what about assigning a sound to program close. When those sounds stop the machine should be off. there is definitely a "startup" sound, but they have gotten rid of the windows shut down sound since windows 8. I have a "loon" sound when programs or "apps" end, and sometimes during shut down you can tell when processes end, but not always when you do the "shut down" command. "programs ending" also makes your computer noisy for not obvious reasons, when events happens and "end" in the background with no speech indicating what is happening, but it is a good indicator of ending events if you don't mind hearing that sound a lot in windows 10 which is busy busy busy. :) At 06:11 AM 10/30/2015, you wrote: This may be overkill but what about assigning a sound to program close. Hi Les, One way of determining whether a quiet machine has shut down is to press the open button on the CD drive. The door will only open if the machine is running. Hi Mike, I ran into such an issue when upgrading a computer from Windows 7 to windows 8.1. It turned out the audio driver that was installed from the 8.1 cd was bad or not correct for the laptop. I had to go online with sighted assistance and get a generic audio driver for the laptop in question. After doing that the audio came back. Something to look into. Something told me to go to the consumers house with sighted assistance. Note: If the sound card was muted at start, Window-eyes should unmute it. This is what leads me to believe a bad driver was installed. My nephew was on the phone for about an hour and no progress was made. The issue has supposedly been escalated to a higher level technician for a call back or an e-mail to resolve the issue. This issue happened using Window-eyes 9.2 under Windows 10 on a Dell Xps-8500 desktop pc. My Dell Xps-501-L laptop is working fine after installing the update or else I wouldn't be able to send this e-mail, smile. I hope someone on this list can help. I wonder if the installation of the update when the machine was restarted caused the sounds to be muted. ? Re: Lost Windows 10 sounds
Chris's message is a reminder of one of the things which makes Window-Eyes so unique as a screen reader. Because screen reader developers nowadays are almost obligated to add certain features which are found in their competition, it's nice when a developer adds something which makes the program stand out from its competition. I'm specifically talking about the feature where Window-Eyes can be set to unmute the sound on startup if sound has, in fact, been muted. This is one of those features which, on the surface, seems like such a small thing but yet it can be a big deal. My sincere thanks go to whoever thought of implementing it.
