[OSM-talk] Calling all Yahoo! tracers. Manchester, UK needs you before Saturday!
Hi mappers :-) Do you have an hour to spare before Saturday? Would you like to be part of the Manchester Mapping Party [1] but can't get there this weekend? If so then it would be really cool if you could do a little tracing in Manchester to help some new users try out this mapping thing. Hopefully we can get a few more in Manchester hooked to help complete the city. What we want to do is send some families and other new users out with a loaned GPS and a roughly printed map to go and annotate with the street names and extra POI data. Anywhere in the Manchester area would be cool (the cake is on the wiki page) but feel free to wander outside that boundary). Ideally though stick closer to the city centre as we suspect that most of the new users will be on foot. If you can help out for an hour or more, then please add your name to the Mapping Party page on the wiki under the Yahoo! tracing section together with the cake number traced (or other area described) so that we can include you in the weekend. We would suggest you limit the tracing to simply marking the roads and applying an unclassified tag plus any notable buildings or points of interest that are obvious. Thanks to everyone who can help out. If you write two or three variations in name itself, the software applications will have either ugly results (e.g. a routing software telling all variations of a street name) or no result at all (not enough space in a map). And the real world does the same : you don't find a sign with the two or three variations of a name but maybe two or three different signs. If you cannot find which variation is the primary, then choose one arbitrarely. If you select the wrong one, someone else will fix it later. Obviously though I can see the benefits of including everything within OSM itself if it can be made to work. Because streets are liner features between logical node points its relatively easy to define the sequence as you cross from one side of the highway (Right-of-way) envelope to the other, adding widths and descriptions for each characteristic from grass to tarmac, kerb details the lot (if you are so inclined). [OSM-talk] brand=...
I notice there is increasing use of a tag brand=... for things like shops, fuel, banks, atms etc. This seems like a good idea to me, as the name of something (Murkets Corner filling station) can be different from its branding (Shell). Often you'd use them interchangeable (Starbucks doesn't often have a specific name, other than perhaps the name of the street or town to which it applies, which is probably clear from the context). As this seems to be in fairly common use, I'll add it to map features as it isn't mentioned anywhere explicitly yet. Also, I will change the Name finder to start recognising it. New or amended 'brand's will get into the index fairly soon, but existing ones won't until I rebuild the index from a complete planet file, which I intend to do over Christmas (it will take at least a week to do this). Hi, Just to covert my data to OSM format. I then want to load my data into JOSM and update the relevant map sections. Then use JOSM to update OSM server. Then another option might be running a WMS server (UMN Mapserver) that reads your shapefiles and offers them as WMS service. The JOSM WMS plugin could then be configured to load pictures from the WMS. That would save you the hassle of converting data and minimize the risk of accidentally uploading autoconverted shapefile data. Soweit, so gut!
-- .' `. | Registered Linux User #443882 |a_a | | http://counter.li.org/ .''`. \_)__/ +--- : :' : /( )\ ---+ `. `'` |\` /\ Registered Debian User #9 | `- \_|=='|_/ http://debiancounter.altervista.org/ | ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it
