Re: [Talk-transit] Help: Bus Stop Data Extraction for Bus Routing Service
Dear Grace, We would like to extract public transport data for public transit routing service in Sweden. This will be a difficult, maybe impossible task at the moment. Public transport data are a complicated matter. Most important for you might be that there is no timetable information in the OSM database. Thus, without a data source for the timetable information, it is not useful for public transport *routing*. Buses running only a few times a week or only on school days can't be discriminated from regular services running every few minutes. Also, there is not even a standard for a public transport data model for bus services in OSM. The best possible approach known to me is http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:Oxomoa/Public_transport_schema But there might be a quasi-standard for Sweden differing from this one, depending on your local community. Please provide some IDs of example relations of the data. I'll try to answer to you based on the data model commonly used in Germany (e.g. Wuppertal) or France (e.g. Grenoble). What is the difference between the stop nodes within a relation and the nodes tagged as “bus_stop” in highways which are also contained in a relation? [...] Do the stop nodes within a relation merely refer to the passenger waiting point, whereas, stops in highway contained in a relation represent the vehicle stopping points? In general, the node tagged as highway=bus_stop indicates the position of the road sign or shelter and is off the street. If I find such nodes on the street, I move them to their proper position. For the vehicle stop, the node on the street might be tagged as public_transport=stop_position but they rarely exist (almost 500,000 bus stops in the database versus 9000 stop positions) or aren't even defined (stop positions in my area depend on the vehicle design, not the served line). The stop areas are introduced to group all the bus stops having the same name. A relation can carry one or all directions of a bus line. In the former case, I recommend to keep both the itinerary (the way the bus physically takes) and the bus stops, usually nodes of type highway=bus_stop, in the order in which they are served. In the latter case, you often find a big mess on both the itinerary and the bus stops which are left from former times (API 0.5) when there was no defined order on the elements of relations. The conference takes place from Tuesday, 2nd March to Friday, 5th March 2010. The first two days focus on Open Source GIS technology and applications, and from Thursday noon everything revolves around OSM; we want to establish the FOSSGIS conference as a German mini SOTM, and it is going to be first and foremost a community event created by OSM community members for their own (even though we expect to draw quite a few visitors who come mainly for the software part). The OSM days will usually feature one track with 30-minute talks (all in German) and a second track with community workshops (called community sessions in this context because the term workshop is traditionally used for something else at FOSSGIS, namely paid-for tutorials in certain open source GIS technologies). The full conference programme is here: http://www.fossgis.de/konferenz/2010/index.en.html Everyone is welcome to attend the conference. Almost all talks are in German so this is an excellent opportunity to practice your language skills, or bring a translator ;-) Attending the conference is free (as in beer), including a simple lunch and coffee breaks (not including beer), but we must ask you to register in order to be able to provide enough food for everyone. Here is the registration link: http://www.fossgis.de/civicrm/event/register?reset=1id=2 The only things that are not free are the two social events on Tuesday and Thursday evening (where you have to pay 38/36 Euros for a food+drink flat rate - including beer), and the aforementioned FOSSGIS workshops which are mainly targeted at commercial users and serve to finance the conference. Details on the social events are here: http://www.fossgis.de/konferenz/wiki/Main_Page (I'm afraid that concerning payment options, FOSSGIS is a bit backward and only accepts bank transfers but if this is a problem for anyone please contact me off-list and we'll sort it out.) [OSM-talk] OSM, SpatiaLite and OpenJUMP
Hi, I was testing two new SpatiaLite reader plugins for OpenJUMP and wrote a short tutorial into OpenJUMP wiki. Because I used, naturally, OpenStreetMap data as test data I was thinking that perhaps somebody here might be interested as well. The tutorial is at https://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/jump- pilot/index.php?title=OpenJUMP_with_SpatialLite SpatiaLite offers full SQL querying capabilities and quite a nice selection of spatial functions but the threshold to start using it is much lower than with PostGIS. There is no need to install and run any database program on a computer, no need to create user accounts or grant rights to the database etc. I consider that Spatialite does not offer especially much for OSM work at the moment. The only proper way to get OSM data into SpatiaLite format is to import data first into PostGIS with osm2pgsql, and need to use both PostGIS and SpatiaLite does not really make the threshold lower. But who knows, perhaps one day somebody begins to build ready made SpatiaLite excerpts. The tutorial is based on importing data from Geofabrik shapefiles which are giving just a faint idea about the richness (and mess) of OSM data. The same instructions will work with Cloudmade shapefiles as well. Good thing is that I am pretty sure that the system works as described for anybody, with one condition: Everything is tested only with Windows XP and Vista. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

3. OpenYP existiert nur für Europa. Was ist mit dem Rest der Welt? Brauchen die keine Telefonnummern? 4.
___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

I can't comment all details, some general ideas. Maybe someone else will step in? Jaak Laineste wrote: I have now done so for admin_level=8 in Hiiu, Saare and Pärnu maakond. [I'll revert that if agreed here] How does it look like on Mapnik, can you give permalink where you have defined it so? How about (some special examples): http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=59.027lon=22.7512zoom=13layers=B000FTF http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=58.202lon=22.3945zoom=12layers=B000FTF http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=58.35lon=24.5058zoom=12layers=B000FTF And some counter example (only having coastline+relation membership with admin_level=8 -- not modified by me): http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=58.9487lon=23.5454zoom=14layers=B000FTF (Some islets having problems at the moment ... will fix that) In visual rendering the arbitrary border in sea looks better option. But technically (geoinformatically and legally) this is just cartographic hack. Paper map makers have freedom to use a lot of visual tricks, like drawing fake borders, they also move POIs (and also roads, rivers etc - depending what is more important) to fake locations to make them visible better. In digital databases like OSM you cannot do it. Or if we really need to do it, then it must be correspondingly tagged (fake border, fake location etc). IMO the proper way to solve it would be to have Mapnik rendering fixed: if line is both city border and coastline, then it should not be rendered as border. This is how also paper maps are usually done. Can you add ticket to the mapnik trac, I think layout bugs are handled through it ? If Narva city municipal border (and their jurisdiction) ends with riverbank, and there is some federal land before state/EU border then this should be like that in the map also. Question: Is this the case or is it just some assumption? Well, just my assumption. Actually http://vana.narvaplan.ee/Linnakaart.pdf shows that the city border is in the middle of the river (like you suggest), but this could also be subjective view of the municipality. Or Maa-amet files are wrong. By the way, http://www.narvaplan.ee/index.php?lang=etmenu=5page=0 has also Vector map of Narva (in terrible DGN and DWG formats, i.e. probably without attributes, but with buildings). Import? Similar thing with Tallinn and Aegna island (which is part of Tallinn, Central linnaosa); Naissaar is part of Viimsi vald, so it is quite a mixture there if you try to divide sea between them reasonably. I've seen that on some maps Võrtsjärv has been divided between counties, but in Maaamet latest data has admin borders on shoreline. Actually about every map I have seen contains the border(s) in Võrtsjärv. Yes, it is common on paper maps. It does not mean it is really correct. Maaamet's http://xgis.maaamet.ee/xGIS/XGis does not have any admin boders on Võrtsjärv, Peipsi, Sea and Narva River. It also does not look like a cartographic accident, as on Emajõgi and smaller lakes there are admin borders shown. Either: Maaamet knows that this is right or they just avoid the issue of vaguely defined (undefined) border areas. I wrote emails to Narva city and Võrtsjärve sihtasutus, lets see if they answer anything. ps. We have the final expert questions from KYSK for our project, and deadline until 11.02 to answer them. What exactly do you mean? Is it possible to have Maa-amet municipality borders visible together with their orthophotography through WMS? Well, you could take the OSM file from http://andre.grueneberg.de/osm/municipalities_20090601.osm.bz2, load it into JOSM and open the Orthophoto WMS in the background. Alternatively you could compare two WMS layers ... unfortunately JOSM or WMSPlugin cannot add transparency to those layers ... You can use some free more powerful WMS client, e.g. Gaia or Quantum GIS which enables to select list of layers. I see there same: borders are ending with shoreline. ___ Talk-ee mailing list Talk-ee@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ee

Ergo: motorway_link.
