[OSM-legal-talk] Interpretation of e-mail needed
Hi, I requested permission to import routes of submarine cables from several providers [1]. Today I got an answer of a US-based provider and I need a little help interpreting it: You can get cable locations if you search hard enough - all routes have to be submitted to various public agencies for permits and FCC collects routes for all US Landing cable systems - so they are in the public record - just may take some work to dig them up. We allow people to use the rpl's as posted on the web page I'm no native speaker but for me this reads like: Take our data, they are in the public domain anyway. But if you dig a little deeper, you can also find all other routes on US territory (because they are PD) Is my interpretation correct? May we use their data? (And a little bit OT: does anybody living in the US know where to start digging? My knowledge of US public agencies is a bit limited, to say the least.) Thanks, Markus [1] http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/DE:Kommunikation#ab_Juni_2010 (Search for Seekabel=submarine cable. [OSM-legal-talk] Attribution in digital services like WFS
Hi, It is easy to deliver OSM vector data through WFS service as gml http://188.64.1.61/cgi-bin/tinyows?service=wfsversion=1.1.0request=getfeaturetypename=osm_polygonmaxfeatures=20 or as json if gml does not feel comfortable http://188.64.1.61/cgi-bin/tinyows?service=wfsversion=1.1.0request=getfeaturetypename=osm_polygonmaxfeatures=20outputformat=application/json What is hard is to give attribution and show the license. Of course I can add Access constraints element to the service metadata ows:AccessConstraintsData from OSM, license CC-BY-SA/ows:AccessConstraints and users can read it at any time from the service with http://188.64.1.61/cgi-bin/tinyows?service=wfsversion=1.1.0request=getcapabilities But is that enough? WFS service can be used without ever reading the capabilities document and user may receive tons of digital OSM vector data without really knowing where those did come from and what is the license. I can add a new field into all the layers, attribution and populate it with some text. That way the attribution could be glued into each feature, but I am not sure if I can force WFS users to fetch that attribute even that way because WFS allows users to request just a subset of attributes. -Jukka Rahkonen- ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

So effectively Clause 2 says they can do whatever they want with the data...subject to their self-imposed limitation that they will only license it under one of those three licences. Hmm. Well, the more I learn about it, I guess the less I'm convinced it's the right way to go. It demands an awful lot of trust from users in the OSMF, and really shuts out organisations like NearMap from the whole process. I guess I'll still be signing up, depending on what NearMap do. Stephen Gower socks-openstreetmap@... writes: In the current process, data from contributors who individually agree to re-licence their edits will be included in the ODbL release of OSM and data from those who refuse will not be included, but there are a large number of past contributors who cannot be contacted. As things stand, the data from these uncontactables will have to be deemed insignificant as far as copyright law goes, or also deleted. In 5, 10, 15 years, or whenever circumstances mean a new licence is appropriate, there will be many many more uncontactables, and given they will have contributed under ODbL, there will be less wriggle-room to declare their contributions insignficant. I don't believe a mere licence can affect whether a contribution is significant under copyright law. If you mean that there might be contract-law reasons, consider that there may also be an implicit contractual relationship between the OSM project and its contributors, who have added their work in good faith on the assumption that it would go into a CC-licensed world map. (It's not as if the OSM project was saying to contributors 'please agree to licence under CC-BY-SA, but it doesn't matter anyway, because they're not copyrightable'; rather, there was and is an understanding that both sides will respect the spirit of the licence terms, whether or not there may be legal loopholes.) Back to the original question, then: the argument for section 2 is that it makes future relicensings possible. The argument against is the same: that it grants too much power to the OSMF, even if subject to a vote of 'active' contributors. -- Ed Avis e...@waniasset.com ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

[OSM-talk] Think before you bot
This is just a general plea to those using bots. Please use your immense powers with extreme caution. There seems to me to have been an increase in bot edits lately, and some of them are becoming very bold. I've seen shop=pet_supplies changed to shop=pet and some similar examples of late, that seem to me to be a bit too bold (though I've not requested most of them be reverted, because I don't feel bold enough to categorically state they are wrong). I've just seen an edit changing all amenity=retirement_home to amenity=nursing_home. There is a difference (nursing is always available in a nursing home - it's even documented on the wiki!). The author of the bot was very quick to respond and is about to revert, when I contacted him, so all credit to him. But I would like to urge all bot-inclined folk to stop and think _before_ you bot. Before you make bold assumptions about what mappers meant by using an unusual tag, try checking with some of them first. (Even if you believe it is wrong to use tags without putting them in the wiki, you will be creating incorrect data if you change them to approved tags with different meanings!) [OSM-talk] Measuring the OpenStreetMap Economy
When I see announcements flying around like MapQuests $1M commitment to OSM, or CloudMades $12M VC round it begs the question of how big is the OSM economy? Purely as an academic exercise it's interesting to think of OSM as an ecosystem around which people find work and provide goods and services. But also perhaps it would be a nice exponential graph to show as a slide along with user growth. We have some limit cases. In 2004 when founded, the economy was approximately zero. Or was it? Do we measure volunteer hours? How about the power and bandwidth the servers are burning? Or is that negligible compared to the other large numbers thrown around? Today I would estimate we have about 5 people freelancing on OSM work worldwide. Perhaps 50 that do OSM work as part of their job, say writing a plugin or using the data. Full-time employees working explicitly on OSM? Perhaps 50 again. These are all guesses with some rough education behind them. These numbers would probably follow the kind of growth curves that various projects around linux did, rather than wikipedia I'm guessing. Because wikipedia was much more about the destruction of value around britannica and others, and the secondary service and otherwise market around wikipedia is pretty small (I think?). Unless you count MediaWiki itself. Once you have the criteria of what goes in to the measuring pot of the OSM economy you further have large error bars on the data for each thing. For example, are those freelancers going to tell you what kind of money they're making? Still, an interesting thought exercise. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

(Ok Google started to compete with NA / TA, but they cleverly combined it with other things like streetview).
You can get cable locations if you search hard enough - all routes have to be submitted to various public agencies for permits and FCC collects routes for all US Landing cable systems - so they are in the public record - just may take some work to dig them up. We allow people to use the rpl's as posted on the web page Ich bin kein englischer Muttersprachler, deswegen mißverstehe ich das vielleicht. [Talk-it] Fiumi, torrenti, ruscelli e rogge varie
L'ultima definizione in particolare mi perplime.
