And this brings us back to the question of the Ritlabs need for a
technical writer - someone, who besides rewriting the help file, would
be able to fix up the English in the GUI. So I hope it is not
inappropriate to ask what is happening in this respect.

The spelling is definitely wrong. :)

I'm not sure what they really wish to put there since, even with correct
settings, it doesn't make much sense to me.

It could be meant to be 'Other Settings' or 'Miscellaneous' where the
settings that don't really belong to any of the other categories, would

3.0.2.5: Account filters "corrupted" by Common filters

2004-11-05 Thread MAU
Hello all,

I'll try to be as brief as possible by skipping some details and/or minor
steps.

I must start by saying that until yesterday (Friday) I had never before
"played" with Common filters.

Last night (a few hours ago) I upgraded to v3.0.2.5 and the first time I
launched it I noticed that most messages received in this account, the one
I basically use for mailing lists, had not been sorted to their
respective folders and were all still in Inbox. What?!?!

I went directly to Sorting Office and I found that some of my Incoming
filters had been moved and/or replaced by other filters and sub-filters.
A bit of a mess that I will more thoroughly analyse when I have more
time because I have saved a copy of the SRB file.

Instead of trying to correct the mess, I got the corresponding
ACCOUNT.SRB file from yesterdays backup (which, BTW, had been working
just fine all along Friday with v3.0.2.4) and replaced the "corrupt"
one.

I start TB again and go directly to Sorting Office and found that
Incoming filters for this account (and only this one) were again
corrupt. Although I didn't do an exhaustive comparison, the corruption
seemed quite similar to the previous one.

Again, I exit TB, replace ACCOUNT.SRB with the good one and start TB for
a 3rd time and again a corruption.

Then I remembered about the Common filters I was testing yesterday (see
my ) and took a look at them.
Although they all were "Not active" they were still shared with _this_
account and only this one.

The end of the story is, for the moment, that since I completely deleted
the Common Incoming filters I have had no further corruption in account
filters.

I know it sounds strange and I have no idea or understand how can Common
filters "corrupt" account filters as they are kept in separate SRB
files, but what is true (seems to be true) is that only the account that
was shared by Common filters was the one corrupted and that I have not
observed any further corruption since deleting the Common filters.

I'll do more testing and try to reproduce the anomaly if I have time
during the weekend.

[3.0.2.5] Bugs with creation of encrypted mail from original base

2004-11-05 Thread Zygmunt Wereszczynski
Hello all!

I tested encryption new feature in TB! 3.0.2.5 Pro version and have bad
impressions from this experience.

Starting from 3.0.2.4 as original, I created backup of all settings,
accounts, address books etc. Then, according to Maxim's advice, I remove The
Bat! completely from my computer. I installed new version (3.0.2.5) in
normal place (C:\Program Files\The Bat!) and run it. After a series of
questions (I selected password in-fly protection) I was asked to decide
either creation of new account or use backup copy of previous data. Of
course, I select retrieving from backup, and then AV appeared:

,--
| Access violation at address 007D193C in module 'thebat.exe'.
| Read of address .
`--

I clicked OK, and it seemed all data were retrieved. It was not really,
because The Bat! alerting me about error in reading archive file. Click on
OK resolves that problem, but more serious problems appeared after
retrieving. Here is what I get:

1. All messages on all accounts disappeared. Holders and account hierarchy
is the same as originally. Account directories have their original names,
but all directories associated with TB folders have new encrypted names.
Message base files and configuration files have extensions beginning with
"E" letter (i.e., ".EBI" instead of original ".TBI").

2. Common filters are lost.

3. Account filters were retrieved I don't know from (they are the same as in
Old Filtering System, all new filters are discarded).

4. Mail creation, sending and retrieving from servers work OK.

5. I have lost fonts setting for message list and folder view.

Then I decided repeat all procedure without encryption. After removing TB!,
and setting it again I did not have AV message. This time there were several
errors during archive file reading, but messages were retrieved successfully.
Account filters were retrieved correctly from backup, however the "Replied
messages" common filter group lost its name, and any common filter was not
retrieved.

Such experiment was repeated three times with the same results. Now I work
with all settings retrieved form external backup, not from The Bat!.

I think such major change in program should be tested very thoroughly. It
seems that internal backup system must be first re-worked to be useable and
reliable.

2004-11-05 Thread 9Val
Hello All,

The Bat! 3.0.2.5 Rush is now available from
http://www.ritlabs.com/en/tbbeta/

Here is a short list of changes:
[*] Message base and configuration data encryption can be now
activated for Professional Edition (see comments below)
[*] Scheduler: Automatic view for currently selected event
[*] IMAP: new mail sound improvements
[*] IMAP: Fine-tune option 'Use precise counters'
[*] IMAP: Fine-tune option 'Retrieve only text'

A little description for IMAP users:
First tune option is suitable for IMAP users which have permanent and
fast enough connection to server. After enabling it you should get rid
of * and <>
Second option is suitable for users who has slow connection and tired
to wait downloading of message with big attachments
Sounds on new mail became a little bit smarter and shouldn't trigger
after filtering and manual operations

!IMPORTANT!
That's Maxim wrote about message base encryption:
During the first run of The Bat! executable, if The Bat! home
directory is not yet configured in the Registry, the program checks a
registry value whether it has been installed by a “Home Edition MSI”
or a “Professional Edition MSI”. In case of Professional Edition, The
Bat! displays a dialog box whether a user wishes on-the-fly
encryption.
If you run a single .EXE-file not from the MSI, The Bat! will ask you
what edition do you have. You can also enter the registration key and
the program will extract the edition from the key.
Please be aware that you can select to use or not to use on-the-fly
encryption only during the clean install, i.e. there were no The Bat!
previously installed. If you like to change on-the-fly encryption back
or forth, you have to make full backup via the The Bat! BACKUP/RESTORE
wizard, remove The Bat! completely, including the Registry entries,
run this beta and do the restore.
Please note that this is a beta version and The Bat! BACKUP/RESTORE
may not yet work properly.

Yeah, that would be fine. I think there should be standard routines
available which do not just a "resize", but a "resample" (speaking in the
words of IrfanView, imho the best available viewer). If you have loads of
pictures in a mail, it's more comfortable to scroll through these pictures
within TB! than to open each one in the external viewer or save them all

No we don't - but this mechanism is also flawed in that:-
- You cannot paste addresses separated with newlines
- you cannot move /copy LDAP searched for entries into you personal address book
- you cannot get rid of the "Foster, Graham" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, if you just want to

This is a long standing issue but, on the other hand, there is an
alternative that many people forget about. You can click on the AB icon
to the right most of each filed and you will see the list of addresses
you have already included in each the To, CC and BCC fields. You can
easily delete addresses there, as well as add new addresses from the AB
or by directly typing them on the little window at the bottom. You can't
directly edit one address that is already on the list though.

of what happened. The same happens with deletions and this is why on
slow connections, the user deletes the message to see it still sitting
there in the message list. It disappears from the message list only
after it's deleted from the server. At least, that's what happens most
of the time. :)

This is true if you have the folders set not to sync or the periodic
checking is disabled.

Yes, I know - but this one account I only access from one location
(company account not accessible from outside the company network).

Folder 1 10
Folder 2 10

If I move a message from Folder 1 to Folder 2 it now looks like this:

Folder 1 10 <9>
Folder 2 10 <11>

- this must mean that the folders are not actually sync'ed until they're
selected.

At one location, you worked with the folder and deleted messages from it
while doing so.

You now go to another location, start TB! there and the local cache for
the folder still contains those messages you deleted. As a result, the
local cache contains more messages than are actually on the server. With
the next sync operation, the old messages are deleted from the list and
the cache.

That makes sense. Maybe I'm just spoilt for bandwidth, so I've never
noticed any big difference when I set stuff.

The folder refreshing every x minutes simply does a server count
refresh.

Check mailbox at startup and the periodical checking will do
synchronisations in the specified intervals and at startup. If none the
folders are set to be sync'd then these options really shouldn't be
doing anything.

The more information you retrieve about a message, the more bandwidth is
being used. So for slow connections, you should minimize what you
retrieve in order to see what's on the server for reading.

With Mulberry, the initial message information retrieved isn't enough
for even threading. If I wish to thread, it retrieves more information
for threading to be done. etc.

the server and which hasn't yet been fully sync'd with what's local.

That just means that there are messages on the server but the amount is
yet to be determined.

To, CC, BCC Fields

2004-11-05 Thread Avi Yashar
This strange behavior might have existed for a while, but I only
noticed it today (in 3.0.2.4).

I pasted a long series of comma-separated email addresses into the CC
field. The strange thing is that whenever I click my mouse into that
field with the purpose of editing the addresses, TB always goes to the
very end of the series. It is very difficult to get to the beginning
if I want to make a change there.

I find the same behavior in the To and BCC fields as well.

Can anyone confirm?

Yes. Or this is how I understand it. There seems to be a distinct lack
of documentation of (also) the daily builds.

If a folder looks like this:

Folder10 <9>

It means that the server holds 10 messages for that folder but the local
cache only holds 9. After sync it only says 10. I forget what <*> means.
