View modes completely broken and other issues
Hæ! Today morning, I decided to go back to v3.0.2.10, after launching v3.5. v3.5 decided somehow to completely delete or forget the different view modes I assigned to different folders. This is a PITA. :( Furthermore, due to the underlining of accounts, the account tree now takes more space on the left handside than before. I now have to scroll down, in v3.0.2.10, my account tree does not fill the whole length (on 1280 x 1024). It would be nice, if there would be an option to disable the underlining. I haven't found this in the XML-file. And I liked the former View Threads by subject better than the new one. Especially when the new message in a subject will be the first one (...begins a thread). I have not found a way to mimic this behaviour with a special ViewMode yet. The new threading by subject requires one more click from the user. Hello Allie, Tony's issue is just another example of how Mulberry depends on the IMAP server for parsing headers. This is part of the protocol. OTOH, TB! doesn't take advantage of this IMAP capability and doesn't fall victim to the servers buggy header parsing. Actually, TB! does take advantage of IMAP protocol on signed messages: when TB! is downloading structure of a message, it checks whether a message is signed and downloads signed messages entirely even when message textual part only is required (as in header+text sync or message preview) :-) -- Best regards, Stefanmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Current beta is (none) | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/

Re[2]: v3.5 status
Hi Mary, ... doesn't leave much that is working at all, does it? MB Different strokes for different folks. I do have to disagree with your MB conclusion, while conceding the validity of your complaints. Almost every component of the program that was fiddled with for v3.5 now shows malfunctions either everywhere or just on some systems, even when it had been working perfectly in v3.01. Not one component was actually improved. MB And in one aspect alone my experience has been completely different from yours: I have always received prompt attention from RitLabs, MB whether in customer service, Bug Track, or TBBETA. Just look at this list: In the last few months, I have received one single mail from someone at RIT (Marek). This was a one-line inquiry about the crashs I mentioned lately and has not seen a second message from RIT after I described the issue at length. I don't expect an answer from RIT to emails in which I accuse them of amateurism and incompetency in their development procedures, even if in my opinion one would be warranted nevertheless. But you have to keep in mind that I didn't start out this way, that this was a learning process on my side that lasted years. Until the bubble broke with the delivery of the scandalous v3.5 and I started to - well, express myself, I had not gotten any reaction from RIT on anything at all for years. Not on questions, not on bug reports, not on suggestions. RIT apears to me like a few students who have landed a chance surprise success with one program they just threw together, built a company around it and started to sell it. When they tried to update the program they recognized that the architecture wasn't updatable. Still they tried, unsuccessfully as is evident, and delayed the necessary rewrites until they only were the very last resort. During all that time, never having learned the business other than by doing, they didn't know how to handle the large customer base that had fallen on them so unexpectedly. They simply didn't (and still don't) know the most basic rules of customer management: 1.) React. Customers are vain, they want to see that they are being heard. 2.) If you won't or can't implement what the customers want right now, explain to them why this is the case and when you'll do it. Explain it once, twice, however often they ask. Make them understand, not feel ignored. Aparently RIT has never heard of these two ironest of iron rules. _THAT_ is the issue here. If they had accorded to this, I might still be unsatisfied with v3.5, but I wouldn't be steaming with anger and straightout calling v3.5 a piece of junk. I also would still have a somewhat decent opinion of the developers, contrary to - well. Go figure. -- MfG, Altomailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] pgpi5WetToh9p.pgp Description: PGP signature Current beta is (none) | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/

I was referring to this specific issue. The same goes for that particular issue with detecting PGP signatures. Again, Mulberry depends on the server providing specific information about the message to detect the presence of the signature. If the server doesn't, then Mulberry is in trouble. TB! isn't in both situations. OTOH, there are many examples that can be sited where TB! does take advantage of IMAP capability where selective retrieval is concerned or where it depends on the server to provide specific data about messages in mailboxes. Additionally, it's difficult for me to give specifics since I don't know the specifics. I do see what the Mulberry developers are trying to say when the issues are cured by transferring the messages to a local folder where Mulberry no longer has to depend on the server. -- Allie Martin System specs: http://www.ac-martin.com/sysspecs.htm -=-=- Trust me, I'm a lawyer.. Re[8]: Threading?
Hello Allie, Mulberry doesn't parse headers locally for IMAP mailboxes. It just uses the parsing the server does. TB! doesn't do that. Not true - this is what I tried to say. The Bat! recognises signed messages using IMAP features when it synchronises or downloads messages for preview (when the option to download text only is set). It also recognises presence of attachments and signed messages if it downloads message structures together with message headers. The reason why TB! recognises signatures is because it uses IMAP features AND parses messages locally (when messages are loaded into the viewer), not because it is ignoring IMAP advantages :-) OTOH, there are many examples that can be sited where TB! does take advantage of IMAP capability where selective retrieval is concerned or where it depends on the server to provide specific data about messages in mailboxes. Suggestions for Addressbook (WAS: Threading?)
Dear Stefan, Dear all, -- Dienstag, 17. Currently I use Outlook. But some time back (before my TB! time) I was using ACT!. I know it has improved but still I'm not using it anymore. But this Apps left a strong impression on me. It was the only Program that handled Addresses exactly as it should: - you enter Company related informations in one form - Person related informations in an other - you can link any Person- to the Company Base (thus you don't have to enter a Company Information every time you enter a Person - good when you know many people from the same company)! - every eMail written to or received from a person, FAX or letter written with Word was associated with the Persons Info Base. You could lock at those infos and find any Document again. Those are the strong impressions that stayed in my mind. If RITlabs could try to improve there AB to a more professional PIM it would be of so much higher values. Just as an Idea: if RITlabs does not see Such a PIM as a strategic value then maybe thinking of having such kind of AB resp. PIM feature as a plug-in or Add-on option. Hi Mary! And I concur with your criticism of RitLabs development priorities, in the main. But they are the ones with the business plan, and so they implement it. You're absolutly right and I also know that it is like you're saying. Ritlabs is the boss here and we can stick with it (the beta group, the program, all other things) or not. I'm just a little frustrated how the whole process works. Sometimes it works quite good, sometimes it works just ok and sometimes it does not work at all. See, we also are customers and it is frustrating to see how we are ignored from time to time. Well I hope this gets better before next payday (version 4). I'm still waiting for some features I already paid when I bought version 2, IMAP fully working (I did not try it for a long time but just by reading all the complains here in the list it doesn't motivate me to do so), newsreader functionality. There's only one other situation that I've witnessed this sort of anguished testimony with continued use of the software, and that's with Windows. Windows is so dominant that there are many who use it and complain bitterly about many aspects of it. Yet they continue because they have no choice or because it's the least of the evils. TB! seems to enjoy a similar sort of allure. It's software that potentially exceedd all others of its kind by a significant margin. So once you're hooked and have dabbled in its more advanced features, you find yourself still hanging around despite the issues/problems. On the face of the anguished testimonials, logic often begs the consideration of the seemingly simple solution of just moving on and using another client, thus ending the misery. Re[2]: v3.5 status
Hi Alex, v3.5 a piece of junk Please do quote me in full and not distortingly. ASK I thought I'd already read you were switching to Mulberry a ASK couple of days ago (Thats it), why don't you do that then? I did, but it turned out that Mulberry isn't quite right for me either. Sending and receiving mail is working without any trouble and in never before seen smoothness, but e.g. I couldn't make the viewer display quotes when it wasn't Text but Initials Text. Things like that. So I'm back. (Please note the difference, however: Assuming that in fact what I mentioned just cannot be done with Mulberry, and I didn't just miss it, this is just a missing feature there. Too bad, but nothing to get agitated about. The authors don't claim any other way. With TheBat, however, it is claimed that some particulars work, while they just don't. And here the authors don't comment it, they don't try to fix it, they don't even admit it. That's a load of difference.) Another point is that I'm expecting to get a broadband connection in the near future. Since many of you report they are seeing problems only on low bandwith connections, I'll definitly want to try TheBat (v3.01 as well as v3.5) in this environment before making a big switch. ASK Looks like something about this piece of junk keeps you using ASK it. Now, that's wrong: I don't see anything positive in v3.5. I try to use it on an experimental system, but only there. (After all, I could hardly complain about problems if I hadn't tried it out in the first place, could I?) Anything else does not appear possible at the moment, I still need to use v3.01 from another machine to clean up the mess v3.5 makes in the message base from the experimental machine. I did and still do like TheBat up to v3.01 rather well, though. This version I have never called junk, because apart from some malfunctions, the core is stable as a rock and there are not many - I personally can recall none that had happened to me at the moment - bugs in it. If v3.5 had been the same quality, we wouldn't have this discussion now, even if some malfunctions remained. -- MfG, Altomailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] pgpWkgRAvHGAw.pgp Description: PGP signature Current beta is (none) | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/

Hi Mary, MB Again, as with Martin Sebald, I really do have to take all your MB words as a means of blowing off steam. You're right about that. Much of it I wouldn't have said if the whole affair hadn't come that far. Technically there isn't a word I would have to take back, but possibly not everything should have been said in the open like this. However, I hope I could explain how it came to this situation on my part. MB People who find v. 3.5 not meeting their needs have the option of MB dropping back to v. 3.01. Which I did, of course. But as already discussed multiple times the IMAP in v3.01 isn't the cream of the crop either. It's just that the rest of the program is working with v3.01. -- MfG, Altomailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] pgpqUtD9njtms.pgp Description: PGP signature Current beta is (none) | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/

So, what you're saying is that your mailserver 1) strips those from Message-IDs. 2) ruthlessly reformats the References headerline, cutting individual Message-IDs in half. That's NOT good! Conclusion: Two mail clients not treating References ID's as they should do according to the relevant RFC. Wrong again, there is only one that, even though on first appearances seems to work properly, doesn't and it's not Mulberry. Be it Mulberry or your mailserversoftware, if the References header gets mangled and/or TB! doesn't recognize valid Message-IDs, it should come as no surprise that it can not handle Message threading the way it should.
