Betas and Encrypted Msg Base

2004-09-16 Thread Joseph N.
Somewhere around here I read that version 3's Pro flavor would have
an encrypted message base. I had downloaded the evaluation copy of
the Pro app that's on the Ritlabs main page, and I've put some Beta
versions on top of that. The latest on my machine is the latest
generally available, B15. The message base, however, is not
encrypted. When using Mailbag Assistant to look at a .tbb file, it's
all there in plain text. What's the story on this?

Importing Multiple E-mail Addresses

2004-03-07 Thread Joseph N.
Other modern applications have multiple e-mail fields for different
e-mail addresses. For example, many contacts these days have a work
e-mail address, a home e-mail address, and perhaps one or two other
e-mail addresses. TB!, however, still has no way to import contact
records from other programs so that the multiple e-mail addresses go
into the proper fields in TB! TB! does not even have multiple e-mail
address fields.

Is this something that is slated for development in the near future?

IMAP Not Functioning

2004-01-25 Thread Joseph N.
I'm trying to understand how IMAP does and does not function with TB!,
but it seems from the posts I've read that there is a basic degree of
proper functionality. Well, not here, under 2.03/b47.

The last checks of the account at issue here were through the TB! IMAP
account, and they showed no messages. Then the following occurred:

 is a screenshot of what
happened when I checked through the TB! IMAP account. It shows two
messages, but no headers were visible, despite the fact that the
account is set up to sync both headers and message bodies.

is a screenshot of the account
through a web-based IMAP interface (SquirrelMail), taken immediately
after 1.png. No messages appear in the account at all. (I separately
checked the trash, and there was nothing there.)

What am I--or TB!--doing wrong here? I have no confidence that this
thing is working the way it should

AB Blocked In Group

2004-01-01 Thread Joseph N.
I posted something on this topic to the TBUDL, but I have since
narrowed down the behavior and am wondering if it's a bug with the
Beta version I'm using (2.03/25).

The following is based on an installation having multiple user
accounts with one administrator. One user account has a full AB,
including groups. When that user account is logged on, the AB appears
without problem. However, if the Administrator logs on and selects
that user's account in the account tree, the AB is not available (a
new AB with no entries, except the default TB! entry, appears).
Similarly, if the user is made part of a group, and the group logs on,
the user's AB is no longer available. It seems to be that an
individual user's AB is not available when there are multiple user
accounts open.

Is this governed by a toggle somewhere that I just haven't found, or
is it a bug?

IMAP Questions

2003-12-01 Thread Joseph N.
I'm trying to figure out IMAP using TB!, but it's sometimes difficult
to discern whether odd behavior is due to the way that IMAP works or
due to TB!'s implementation

I just synchronized a mailbox using IMAP, and TB!'s status line read,
"1 recent, 3 unread out of 3 total messages" However, only one
message shows up in the message list. Plus, it appears there twice,
once with nothing in the preview pane (and nothing if I try to open it
up), and once with a real message to be read.

How can I read my other two unread messages, and why must there be a
shadow message in the message listing?

Peter,

If I understand you correctly, it seems you are confusing separate
functions into one expectation. The program has an autocomplete
function, by which the TO: field will be filled in with recently
used text that matches what you are typing. That is probably why the
email address alone shows up. You can also autocomplete your way into
the name *and* email address two ways: either by typing what's been
typed recently before, which might include the quotation marks; or by
typing the last name if the name is in the address book displayed by
last name, in which case what will appear is Lastname
, and you can just add the first name.

So, you can get an autocompleted TO: field when you've recently
entered the same information or when the information is contained in
the address book. The template function is totally different, though.
Even when you have a template set (for everyone, or just a group, or
just an individual), you still need to put some data in the TO: field,
either by typing it or completing it from the AB or using an
autocomplete function, or using MAPI from another source.

If this isn't helpful because I misunderstood your situation or you
need more info, please post more.

Changing administrator settings

2002-07-09 Thread Joseph N.

I've written about this before, but I'll throw it out here again
because it still happens with ver. 1.61.

When I go in to a multi-user machine as Administrator, there are the
following two things wrong:

1. The first listed user under Options/Network/Privileges is listed
as having administrator privileges. It doesn't matter how often I
correct and save this setting; it always reverts to the wrong default.

2. Frequently, but I don't think every time, the sole group I have
set up gets changed. The biggest change is that the member users are
no longer checked (Options/Network/Groups), so the "group" is empty.
What this means is that when a group user tries to log in, the program
hangs and has to be killed.

Can someone reproduce these, or come up with a reason why they're not
bugs?

Adam,

If I understand your meaning, then Yes. The string set (the content
for which the program will search) and the presence condition (whether
the trigger is the presence or the absence of the string set) together
form what is sometimes called a rule. There can also be alternative
rules in the same filter, which can be thought of as one collective
rule. Some rules are under the "rule" tab, such as the presence of
string sets. Other rules are under the "advanced" tab.

Then there is an action. Some actions are actually set on the "rule"
tab, e.g., "Move message to folder X." Other actions are on the
"action" tab.

(Rule + action) = filter.

NOD32 test version BAV

2002-04-28 Thread Joseph N.

Just installed the NOD32 BAV, and noticed it is listed as a "test
version." This raises two questions which perhaps someone here can
answer: Is there any reason not to continue using the native NOD32
POP3 scanner along with this test version? I hate to trust something
this new with a mission this important.

The other question has to do with the action once an infected virus is
found. Does TB! piggy-back onto the remedial bahavior of the AV
program, so that, if I selected to try to clean the virus, it would be
NOD32 that would be doing it instead of TB!? I love TB! as an email
client, but I'm not sure it's ready for reliable quarantining or
cleaning just yet

Any ideas?

Kai, thanks for your comments. I was wondering whether there was any
reason to use the TB! plug-in for NOD32, in view of their own fast
scanner. It sounds like the only reason might be the quarantine

comments from others would be appreciated)

FYI, I wrote the ESET in January or February, after the update that
started generating--and not cleaning up--the .tmp files. They said

2002-04-09 Thread Joseph N.

Jacek, is your experience with using a TB! plug-in for NOD32?

I use NOD32's POP3 scanner between TB! and my POP3 server. It's
quick, and it doesn't quit upon finding no viruses. When there is a
virus found, a large dialog box pops up with identifying information
about the email (sender and subject and, possibly, date); the name of
the malicious code; and some choices.

Re[2]: old complaint

2002-03-30 Thread Joseph N.

Only some of the threads in any given mailing list interest me. I
cannot figure out how to click on a specific thread and open it all at
once; nor can I figure out how to view one message in a thread and
then click the navigation arrows to browse through the rest of that
thread. So, my only choice seems to be to manually expand the thread,
view the messages in the preview pane, and open whichever one(s) I
want to see in a big window. I do not open each message I read, so
No, I don't open and close the folder repeatedly. But, as I say, the
navigation icons plain don't work through threads, so I wind up having
to open and close just to get to the next message I want to read. (The
icons do not even reliably go in the same direction; see comments on
this list on that topic about a week ago.) Do you have suggestions?

Re: PGP/GnuPG in 1.60

2002-03-25 Thread Joseph N.

My experience is that one is better off using GnuPG through the
GPGshell tray program than with The Bat's plug-in. Reliability is
better and the options are greater. I found some of TB's menu options
didn't produce with GnuPG, including poor key management. The tray
options do not produce exta work, just extra control.

Re[5]: The Bat! - bug report - address book

2002-03-21 Thread Joseph N.

You're missing the point. They are not duplicate entries. TB!'s
address book is set up to display names in several formats, including
those common in various countries and contexts. If a user has not
filled in all the address book fields, then the entries might appear
to be duplicate, but that is because the program can only display what
the user has provided.

Oddly enough, it works when I compose a message in a different email
program (Mozilla 0.9.9) and open it here in TB!. The delimiter (dash
dash space return) and everything below it is in the small gray font.
But when I perform exactly the same operation, keystroke for
keystroke, but compose it here in TB! and send it through the Internet
to be received in a different TB! account (on same machine as
composition), the delimiter and signature appear in the B49 RTV in the
same font as the body of the message.

Re[2]: 1.54 Beta/49

2002-03-16 Thread Joseph N.

While a mutli-user environment would more likely result in the problem
we're discussing, that's not how it arises for me. My configuration
is as follows: one separate user with one account; one group with two
accounts, neither of which is that separate user I first mentioned. I
usually load the group with both accounts, but sometimes I will load
just one account or the other. As I say, I'm not really sure how the
problem develops, but I think it's due to the settings when the
program was last used.

Confused about RTF composition

2002-03-16 Thread Joseph N.

Some footers are appearing in the RTF viewer with that small gray
type. One example is the text that the listserv adds; it is also
appearing in the signatures of list members. Are these all composed in
a program other than TB!, something that can compose in RTF? If so,
how are they being added, because the only options I can find to
insert text into a QT are for text files not RTF files. If not, if
they're being composed in TB!, where/how can TB! compose RTF?

Re[2]: Common folders

2002-03-15 Thread Joseph N.

There should be a way optionally to relocate these common folders. If
I have two identities within one group, and the data files are located
in a place that makes sense for my organization (and from which they
are automatically backed up), it does not make sense for folders which
are common to the accounts within that group to be located in a
totally different place.

"Known" filter and processing speed

2002-03-11 Thread Joseph N.

I disabled the "known" filter because I assumed it had some processing
overhead which caused a delay. I'm wondering now, though, whether
anyone here who uses it on a Win98 machine has a sense of whether the
difference is noticeable.

Re[2]: MAPI inoperable

2002-03-06 Thread Joseph N.

I'm not sure what any of this means, so I'll pass it all on FWIW

I finally downloaded the newer .dll file, copied it into the primary
directory, and rebooted. Just to be sure, I went in to the
administrator's preferences and re-installed MAPI. It still wasn't
working.

I happened to pick a contact (in Lotus Organizer) who has entries in
two different TB! address books. I clicked in Organizer; a dialog in
that program came up (asking whether to address an email or to drop
the address info in an email); and then--showing that the call did, in
fact, get to TB!--a dialog from TB! came onscreen. TB! showed a
dialog to resolve the email conflict due to there being two different
entries. I clicked one of the two entries, and that's when it all
stopped and nothing further happened. So, MAPI seemed to be working
enough to get the data to TB!, which then seems to be dropping it.

Next, I changed the Organizer setting to use the Simple MAPI client,
without specifying TB! Now it worked. I switched it back to TB!, and
it worked again. None of this should have mattered, but it did. But
then I noticed something odd about the addresses that were going in to
the composition window.

When TB! picked up the MAPI call, it checked its own address books
(all of them, not just the default) for similar addresses. If it
found one, it used the associated card to address an email. If it did
not find one, it failed to create an email with the information being
passed by MAPI.

Any ideas about what's going on or how to make it function better? Is
it just inadequate programming in TB!'s code?

JN
