Isn't this just a question of semantics? You (Stuart Cuddy) are
talking about the reasons to temporarily change the sort order while
Stuart Hemming is talking about the rational for TB! changing the used
view mode when changing sort order. You are using the term "changing

I don't get your point. When you click on the header to do a
temporary sort,it changes the viewmode permanently. What you describe
above is what happens. Give it a try.
Change you sort order by clicking on a header.
Now leave the folder and then come back again.
The folder will now be using the change you made, not the original
sort order. This has also made a change to all folders using this
 viewmode.

If I have a VM set and I want a temp change to, say, sorting, I would
like to be able to click on the header and then forget about it.
If/when I return to this folder the original VM should still apply. I
can't see the point in getting TB! to change the VM only to forget the

I often read my email on a computer upstairs, but make sure it gets
stored on a computer downstairs. When I do this I need to quickly
sort and filter my inbox content. By clicking on the From Header I
can sort it by from and select all the mail from the same person to
delete or move to another directory. I then have to remember to
change it back by clicking, usually twice, on the Created Header to
return it to my regular view.

Or what about errant clicks where instead of clicking on the message
you mean to click on you hit the header and accidentally change the
 viewmode.

Or what if you want to temporarily sort by priority, or subject, or
size, for whatever reason to see a pattern. It would be nice to not
have to worry about returning to the old viewmode before leaving the
 folder.

Many different reasons for many different people. ;)

Yes I see it if you right click on the bar at the top, however, the
missing component here is that you don't have to use that because it
will already have made this change permanent for the current viewmode.
I would like to have any changes made by clicking on the top bar to be
only temporary unless I select the option to Save.

I totally agree. I can't think of another program that does not keep
the existing view irrespective of changing the sort column. In my
opinion, it is a design flaw that should be fixed.

I don't really care how it is implemented as long as any change to the

 Suggestion:
What if when you click on a header it changes the view mode but by
default when you leave the currently viewed folder the change is
lost. This way you can retain your carefully set up Viewmode without
having to worry about an errant click.
Then if you really wanted this Viewmode change to become permanent
there could be a choice on Right click that offers to "Save current
Layout". This way you wouldn't always have to answer this question
everytime you wanted to make a temporary change, but could still use
the click on header approach to change the layout.

If there were any support I would make it a wish.

If accidentally clicking on a column header nukes the view mode you
spent an hour creating, it's hard to call that a feature.

I use the (undocumented) Ctrl + RMB-click-on-column-header technique
to multiply sort columns in my view modes. For instance, in my Inbox
view mode I might sort first by read status, second by received date,
third by sender, and fourth by subject. (Very nice feature, by the
way.) One errant mouse click on a column header and --bam!--it's gone.
I have to recreate it from scratch. This is not a "feature" I
appreciate.

If sorting by columns changes the view mode, then it loses it's basic
usefulness as a quick way to group together all messages from a given
sender, etc. Or view modes becomes unusable.

Hold your cursor over a column header and right click. You're offered
the option to save the column settings to a view mode. I should have
to use this feature if I want the changes saved. Otherwise they
should be discarded when I move to a different folders.

Other possibilities include remembering the current
viewmode, and subsequently having the option to

- return to the saved viewmode
- change the saved viewmode to match the current settings
- change to some other viewmode (or none)

I think I would like temporary changes to a folder's view
settings not to be remembered across shutting the program
down.

I do not yet use viewmodes, but if I do, I want them them to
be persistent and carefully crafted (like styles in a
word-processor document) and not easily accidentally
changed.

It does seem that different users have very different
visions for this sort of feature

Exactly. Agree completely. It annoys me too that if I sort one folder by
sender, then all folders (with a variety of view modes) are suddenly
sorted by sender, too.

I'd prefer a menu entry for _system_wide_ changes: Global view mode
(which can be set back to Undefined to "return" to all the view modes
set for individual folders), global sorting. Set from the View menu,
they would apply to all.

Clicking on a column header should be local and transient.

The present behaviour is one of the main purposes of View Modes.

I'm not sure exactly why you need to frequently change the sorting
target, but perhaps you should consider applying an individual View to
certain folders. Highlight the folder and use Alt+Enter to call the
menu, then choose 'Column setting' (it is near the bottom of the
folder properties window).

I hope this helps.

Well then, in that case you have to "free" the folder from the
viewmode, and you can do that.

I wanted to show that the real "issue" is about how one or the other
user expect this feature to work, thats why I described how I see and
want it...

If it is solely about the "how", I like Marcus' suggestion best: TB
should pop up a requester asking the user what he wants to do when
he/she alters the viewmode-preset view of a folder...

Something like - "this folder currently uses viewmode ABC - click YES
to alter the entire viewmode for all folders, click NO to remove the
viewmode from the folder and use an individual configuration".

You should not call this a bug, it's WAD. I too would like to be asked
whether to save or not to save changes to the current view mode, but not
liking the current design doesn't make it a bug.

I disagree, if I want the viewmode to change I should edit the
viewmode. THere are any number of reasons for changing a setting in an
individual folder as a one off that you don't want to be reflected
everywhere else.

I don't know what bug you're referring to, but it would be my
understanding (and I actually like it that way) that - if I associate
a folder with a certain view mode - the settings of the folder and the
viewmode are "linked", ie. if I change the sort order/column in one
folder with a certain viewmode applied, I *expect* that the viewmode
will change in all other folders that use the same viewmode, too.
Otherwise I wouldn't need viewmodes but could configure all my folders
individually.

If not, when will it be fixed?

Frankly, I can't consider a program to be serious, professional
offering when a basic function--common to all similar programs,
in your face every time you look at the main screen--doesn't work
properly. Sorting by columns should not change saved view modes.

It's already there--right mouse click, Save To. However, I'm not
certain it doesn't save other VM settings in addition to column
settings. This wouldn't matter if you only wanted to save to the
current view mode, but would if you were trying to save to other view
modes as well.

I wish we had more documentation on this. I'd suggest you create a
Test view mode to experiment in. Sort the first column normally (LMB
click), then hold down the control key and LMB click (sorry, I wrote
RMB before) on the column you want for the second level sorting. You
should see a number 2 appear next to the column name, and a number 1
next to the first column you sorted by.

That's how it works on my machine. It's possible that you have to have
some kind of system setting selected, though. Wish we had
documentation.

When you've got it perfected, with all the different sorting levels
going in the right direction (ascending or descending), RMB-click over
any of the column headings and use Save To to save the setting to the
View Modes for which it's appropriate. (Er, actually I think you can
do that to save only the column settings, but it might also save
whatever other settings you have in your Test view mode. So best to
experiment before overwriting already existing view modes.)
