He doesn't appear to have had any issues with the 580EX II. Of course, he was using Radio Poppers. http://speedliting.com/how-to/freezing-action-with-high-speed-syn c/ One of the resulting photos ended up on the cover of his book. When you think about it, someone who is willing to spend $600 for a radio trigger has self selected themselves into a high flash use group. If I had one of these I would be very tempted to ventilate the head with a few small drill holes. Also I would not stop using my 580EX II if I had one, especially since I'm in the low use group. I might avoid extreme usage, flashing the unit over and over again at short intervals for an extended period. I read the article this morning and perused the PDF from LPA. Several observations: 1. why are we only hearing about this now? If this is as big a deal as they claim, we would have been hearing about it all along. Doing a quick Google search, I’m not seeing much of anything beyond this article. 2. The article indicates that LPA encourages people to use high speed sync a lot because they can multiply the units and make up for the decreased power. If you’re running your flash in HSS, you are pushing it a lot harder than would be typical. That might be the real source of the problem. 3. I’ve had mind since they originally came out, plus I’ve since bought two more. They’ve been rock solid performers. I’m not a super heavy user, but I’ve done a number of church directories and other large-ism things with them. 4. I did have one thing fail. I admit it. The rubber gasket at the foot of the unit broke on one of mine from jamming it into a flash bracket. Maybe I should sign onto that class-action suit. g I’m not especially impressed by any of this, but I’m see what happens next. It seems that the LPA tech team (make PocketWizards) has discovered that Canon has apparently been screwing 580EX II users at least the current ones. There is a serious design fault in the flash and Canon must have known this since they designed around the problem in the 480EX II. The problem: It appears that some combination of elements comes together to create the risk and increased probability of an IGBT failure within the 580EX II. ‐ Sealed flash tube assembly (internal zoom carriage assembly) ‐ Misalignment of the flash tube within the reflector such that arcing is more probable ‐ Reduced optical feedback via the fiber optic sense cable in the flash head ‐ Dryer air where ozone can be generated more easily ‐ Electrical discharge through the reflector at a moment when the IGBT is turned off [8]http://www.canonrumors.com/files/580EXII.pdf Quite technical meaning it will be tough going if you don't know much about electronics. The translation: The IGBT is one of the transistors on the 580EX II. It controls the flash duration. The head on the flash is sealed, multiple flashes build up ozone, since the unit is sealed the ozone is trapped in the flash head. By some unknown, at this, time mechanism, the increased ozone cause IGBT failure. Replacing the IGBT will lead to another failure quickly. Removing the glass plate and making the unit non-sealed leads to zero failures after IGBT replacement. Thus the ozone is the problem since removing the plate allows the unit to vent. The 580EX has a different design and the 480EX II has been designed with vents to allow ozone to vent off. Read the pdf even if you aren't techie with the above explanation you'll be able to follow along. Sounds like an opportunity for

I went to bed last night thinking about it, and woke up with one idea, based on what Michael L. Wilson reported in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] where he said: I can reproduce this error by opening IE or another browser and have it loading a page when I try to view a message. Also, if there is a form waiting for input, the html error can also appear. I do not know if this is anything, just my experience. Now, I have been getting this error randomly, but never multiple instances, since v. 3.0.0.6. I have F-Secure as my AV, and I have it configured to check for updates automatically, once every 57 minutes. It uses a version of Backweb to do this. I think, in effect, it opens an HTML connection briefly, but I don't know that for sure. Anyway: Could the coincidence of opening a message to read in TB!, at the same time as Backweb is being used, trigger the Invalid HTML error display? I wonder if all who are getting this might have an application set for automatic updating? (Including, of course, Windows itself.) I don't have to have a browser running to get the error. Now, I have been getting this error randomly, but never multiple instances, since v. 3.0.0.6. I get multiple instances when I aggressively look for it, and it's especially bad in a folder that contains HTML as well as plain text messages. Just to provoke it into happening, I'll rapidly switch from message to message and soon the 'Invalid HTML' errors appear. However, while actually reading mail and moving from message to message to at least glance at content, the error is very uncommon and happens only occasionally. I have F-Secure as my AV, and I have it configured to check for updates automatically, once every 57 minutes. Wow! Frequent. ;) It uses a version of Backweb to do this. I think, in effect, it opens an HTML connection briefly, but I don't know that for sure. I really doubt that this would have something to do with the error. KA Too funny. This comment may be more true than I yet realize. You gave me an opening. I took it. That's the kind of guy I am. Cannot resist. :badguy: I don't know about forums, but this I learned on the Usenet: When changing the subject, repeat the old subject in parenthesis, preceeded by was:. Whoever replies to it, will take the string with the parenthesis out and leave only the new subject intact. KA To be honest, I don't frequent USENET as much as I used to but at the KA time, changing subjects was considered a violation of Netetiquette. It may well be that Nettiquete is understood differently across newsgroups (especially across countries, and most of the NGs I subscribe to are in German), but then, this isn't a newsgroup. KA Perhaps that has changed. I used to mod on a couple of forums and KA changing subject within a thread was just not allowed. No matter. What do you suggest instead? KA You are pinning me down. Good for you. :-) I'm an MBA graduate! :graduate: :-) KA To be honest, it is up to the mods to determine how they want to KA run the group. My issue is simple. I am trying to justify rolling KA out TB to multiple users and I have to assess the usability of TB KA considering the fragmented and minimal documentation. KA Consequently, I go to the archives to find out from other people's KA experience how to better use the system. I am annoyed that when I KA do a key word search, totally extraneous material comes up because KA of the changed subject lines. My task is therefore made more KA difficult. I don't follow. If the subject is changed, it won't show up in your search any more, would it? KA If it were my board (which it isn't), I would not allow the changing KA of subject lines. New topics should have new subjects in a new thread. We have experimented with deleting the references for new subjects on the OT list. The result was that the history of the thread was lost, and it was useless for those who wanted to go up the thread and see what the line of argument was. KA Minor deviation of subject matter contained within a post to a thread KA should definitely be allowed and monitored by the mods. What I am KA seeing now appears to me to be mass thread hijacking under the guise KA of if I modify the subject, it will be OK. That is how I see it KA anyway. Others will certainly have different opinions. It's not how I see it. Threads should not be hijacked, of course, but some threads develop different arms, and it is a poster's responsable decision to change the subject or open a new thread. We should change the subject of this thread (again) if we continue, but now I have the feeling we should continue on TBOT anyway. -- Cheers, Thomas. Moderator der deutschen The Bat! Beginner Liste. Change in Subject Line (was Invalid HTML)

An example: Here is a subject a few posts up: Invalid HTML (was: Beta cycle suggestion). Ok, I want to do a search on Beta cycle. What I get are all the posts with beta cycle in the post (including the subject). So, I also get this specific post that has nothing whatsoever to do with beta cycle. Multiply that by however many occurrences there in the archives. We have experimented with deleting the references for new subjects on the OT list. The result was that the history of the thread was lost, and it was useless for those who wanted to go up the thread and see what the line of argument was. I understand. It's not how I see it. I was only pointing out an annoyance in searching the archives when the subject lines of threads change so often. I will certainly live with it and I appreciate all the comments. -- Best Regards, Kevin PGP Keys: idap://keyserver.pgp.com idap://europe.keys.pgp.com:11370 Using The Bat! v2.12.04 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 1 pgpUe5oAlY91W.pgp Description: PGP signature Current beta is 2.12.03 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/

I agree with your opinion with the possible exception of a complete new subject for a new thread because when someone sees quotes in a new thread they wonder where they came from. So if I'm understanding you correctly, I would use the (was: old subject) syntax after new subject. At least that way someone could find the conversation where the subject was born, sort to speak. The down side is that moderators would have to try to administer which could be difficult. -- Best Regards, Greg Strong Using The Bat! v2.12.03 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 1 Current beta is 2.12.03 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/

On Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at 3:07:10 AM you wrote: I agree with your opinion with the possible exception of a complete new subject for a new thread because when someone sees quotes in a new thread they wonder where they came from. What wonders me is the grand discussion ensuing by such a minor inconvenience asked from us by the moderators. We are only talking a sensible change of the subject line if the subject of the message is other than the line says, that is, if the thread changes its contents. This, BTW, has always been part of Netiquette in Usenet. Together with the very old - sometimes one should read the monthly list rules reminder - directives to *open a new thread* if one has a new subject instead of replying to a message should tae care of everything. If only we try to use our brains for consideration and sensibility instead of whining and finding loopholes (no, the W.C. Fileds was inserted randomly by TB, but just fits perfectly). Lately the list obviously tries to convince me that it is not Germany but the whole world discussing minor possible quibbles to principal problems of the World's design. Let's try to be constructive instead of discussive for a change.
