Nope. The closest you can get is to mark "old" unread messages with
a different colour group, using the flag or park options. Then mark
your old unread messages as read. There are many disadvantages to
this strategies, but its the closest you can get right now.

> 2) Why can't I rearrange the order of my folders? They appear in the

Hold down the ALT key while dragging with the mouse. To make a
folder a child folder of another folder, use ALT-CTRL and drag.

> 3) I can't find a "view source" function.

I think you have to export the message and view it using your
 favourite text editor.

> 4) the built-in html viewer doesn't seem to work very well?

TB renders HTML properly, it just will not go onto the net to search
for graphics, etc. If the pictures are sent along with the message,
then TB will display them correctly. There are several reasons, one
 of them being:
Some spammers will send an HTML message with a reference to a small
graphic with a unique name. When their server registers a hit on
that file, they know that your address is active.

I usually leave the HTML auto-view turned off. When I get a message
where I want to see the formatted version, I just double click on the
attachment icon to view it in my default browser.

I wouldn't want RIT to spend any time working on the HTML rendering
engine. However, I wonder how much work it is to make use of the IE
engine? I know several programs that do this to incorporate browser
 capabilities.

> 5) Is the toolbar configurable? I can't see how to do it.

Not yet. It is supposedly going to be in Version 2. But don't hold
your breath waiting for *everything* that is rumoured to be in the
 works for V2.

OK, The Bat! assumes that any unread mail is "new". Therefore,
"unread" and "new" messages are treated the same way. However, if you
have found how to indicate by sound when a new mail has arrived, you
can also create a filter catching all incoming messages and run an
external program (Account/Sorting Office/Incoming Mail/New). As
"filering string" in "rule" you choose a catch-all, for example "@"
present in 'kludges' (TB's word for 'headers'). Then under the Action
tab, you click on "Run external program" and have your coffee machine
make a double espresso. ;-)

Hold down the ALT key while dragging them.

Email: headers + body = raw message. HTML: some picture thing.

However, if you tick Options/External Image Viewer, any HTML
attachment will open in you favourite browser in which you can view
the source.

The viewer works perfectly, only in TB. If the images are sent with
the message, they will be shown. However, often enough they are not,
and the email client is required to conntact to the internet and "get"
these images. NS, Eudora and OE do that, and we dont' like it: it's a
security problem. We don't want TB to do this.

B> 5) Is the toolbar configurable? I can't see how to do it.

AFAIK I think it's not configurable. But we do have a wish list. ;-)

Re: Newbie questions

Hello BillG,

TB does not do html email because they believe that email shouldn't be
able to do html. Of course they are rumored to do newsreader coming
and have many do render html (except for the graphics) but pooh pooh
on what is becoming standard.

Oh .. and watch .. you will probably be getting a lot of '.. yeah man
we dont do html' yada yada.

Just take it in and realize that some people like to stand in the way
of a raging tide :-). It would be nice if it was switchable but until
they realize that email does/will contain html and graphic pointers
...

But that shouldn't stop you from using TB. It does seem to be the
best out there.

Newbie questions

2000-09-09 Thread BillG

I'm an unregistered user of ver 1.45. I have been reasonable impressed with
TheBat!, but there are a few things that are REALLY bothering me. If I
can get these problems worked, I REALLY want to buy this program.
Maybe someone can tell me how to fix them:

1) Is there no NewMail indicator? I see the animated icon and the
Ticker - but they are triggered by Unread mail, not NEW mail. If I
already have some unread messages (I always have some!), then I will
not have any indication that a new message was just downloaded (other
than a sound, if that is enabled and I happen to be in the room).

2) Why can't I rearrange the order of my folders? They appear in the
order that they were created, and I can't fugure out how to
re-order them.

3) I can't find a "view source" function. I see that I can view the
RFC-822 headers - that is good. But I'd like to be able to view the
entire raw data of any message. Is that possible? Every other mail
reader that I've used has that ability.

4) the built-in html viewer doesn't seem to work very well?
I get weather reports and comics and such from infobeat.com.
They come in HTML form. TheBat can't seem to render the files.
Why? Netscape mail, Eudora, OE, all render those messages just fine.

5) Is the toolbar configurable? I can't see how to do it.

That's it. I really DO like this tool. I LOVE the strong filtering
(it is at least as good as the Eudora filtering). The whole template
thing is VERY cool. Eudora can't even spell "template". :)

I'm guessing that I have not been using TheBat long enough - that some
of you experts can answer these questions. The lack of a NewMail
indicator, and the HTML viewer problem might be show-stoppers (if I
can't figure out what I'm doing wrong).

Please help this newbie. :)

Bill

 Nifty!!

I did like Marck did and converted to strictly address book based
templates. Things work just great for me. It's particularly good when
you make alterations to your identity such as I do with mailing lists as
well as to other specific recipients. Address book templates also allow
you to use multiple templates while working from a single folder.

I do, however, agree with Paula that using folder templates has it's
advantages. It's best for the user to try both and decide which method
works best for him/her.

You know, this hasn't been a problem for me. What I did was put all

"tragic" seems a wee bit overstated. I use many, many folder templates
to do things that cannot be done with account and address book
templates, or at least not as simply. I prefer them to the other
template options, in general.

The mailto thing has never bothered me, but then I don't click on mailto
links much. On the rare occasions that I do, if the wrong template pops
up, I simply cancel and pick a folder whose template I want the message
to use. This allows me to quickly use any of my accounts and identities
attached to folders for a message. Very flexible and easy to use in my
book.

You're right, of course. For people annoyed by this behaviour, an
option to set a default template for mailto's is needed, perhaps for
each account.

Here is a cut and paste of the last answer I sent to someone on this,
and they said it worked for them.

**
Unfortunately, this is a problem not with The Bat!, but with OE. When
you install OE it asserts its association with .EML files. When you
install The Bat!, it also asserts its association with .EML files.
This is the normal way of Windows. New software associates itself with
the filetypes it deals with.

The problem is that OE does not detect that it has lost the
association, and therefore never tries to reassert those associations.

For instance, if you load IE5, it asserts associations with .htm,
.html etc. When you then later install, for instance, Netscape, then
Netscape takes over those associations. However, in this case,
whenever you remove Netscape, and begin using IE again, it detects the
loss of associations and asks if you would like to make IE the default
browser again (which re-associates the filetypes.) OE doesn't do
this, and I have no idea why. I guess they figure that they are the
only game in town and nobody else would use the .EML extension.

You might try this.

- Open a folder on your hard drive.
- Select View then Folder Properties from the menu bar.
- Choose the File Types tab.
- Scroll down until you see Internet E-mail Message
- Click it once, then hit the Edit button.
- In the Actions box, select Open, then click the Edit button
- Use the Browse button to locate the OE executable, then click OK
- Click OK again, and again, and again
**

Hmmm. Strange. I do this quite heavily with incoming messages and it
works fine.

Yes - that was what I wanted. Thank you.

An aside from this, the filter I set up to feed mail from the inbox
into this specific folder is supposed to change the colour-group of
the mail from (i.e nothing) to another colour I refer to as
'pending'. However, no colour-group change occurs.

Is there any known problem with the colour-group changing with
filters. The 'replied message' filter I just created works perfectly.

Many thanks again,

Mark

Have you tried the "Replied message" filter in the sorting office?
It should do what you want.

Re-Colouring a message when replying...

2000-09-09 Thread Mark R Harding

Hi TBUDL,

I have a folder set up into which filters mail defined by a specific
filter - the filter also sets the colour group of the mail to
something that represents a 'pending job' when it moves it into the
folder.

I have also set up the folder reply template to perform specific
actions and create a specific message when I hit reply on any message
within this particular folder.

The final thing I would like to automate if possible is to have the
colour-group of the replied-to message changed from 'pending' to
'reference' when I action the reply. I know the little message icon
indicates that the message has been replied to but if I can add some
extra colour to this action to visually reinforce what I have done
then I'd be most happy.

Does anyone know if it is possible to re-colour the replied-to message
when sending a reply or is this not possible with the current tool
set?

My thanks and best wishes in advance.

Mark

Hello Januk,

That's the one, I couldn't remember who sent it. I noticed this time
your added REM statement containing your name. I shall amend your
original in case this topic arises again.

The reason mine didn't come through is because I didn't send it. I
was waiting to see if there was a demand for it. Didn't want to send
it in case everyone already had it.

It's a great little application and I personally couldn't live
  without it.

Backup

2000-09-09 Thread Wayne Black

Friday, September 08, 2000

Hello All,

I am a new user of The Bat and love it! I don't think I could ever go
back to anything else. Anyway, I wanted to put my two cents in on the
subject of backing up The Bat. I use these two simple batch files to
backup and restore everything to and from the "D" partition of my hard
drive. It works assuming the command line version of the "RAR"
archiver program being in the path. I have it in the Windows
directory. It would of corse work with Pkzip, ARJ or which ever
archiving program you use. I hope they help. I know they sure have
come in handy for me. They look like this:

This one backs up everything including the registry key.
-
@echo=off
cd\
cls
cd thebat
echo.
echo.
echo This batch file will backup the entire Bat email program and all
echo messages plus the Bat registry file to D:\BAT for easy restoring.
echo.
echo Make sure to run this batch file from the "C" drive.
echo.
pause
cls
rar a -r d:\bat\allbat.rar
regedit /e d:\bat\tbreg.reg hkey_current_user\software\rit
cd\
cls

And to restore:
--
@echo=off
cd\
cls
echo.
echo.
echo This will restore the Bat program, all messages and the bat registry.
echo.
pause
rar x d:\bat\allbat.rar c:\thebat
cls
echo.
echo.
echo The last step is to restore the Bat's registry file.
echo.
pause
regedit /c d:\bat\tbreg.reg
