Actually I need this feature for office work. And won't explore
programing matter. I described the problem counting for interesting
and maybe for implementing this into future versions of TB!

It's an incomplete "all languages" at best. I could have the same setup I
have right now with TB! using Outlook, but OL is apparently never going to
have the fix where you can read subject lines in the message window, unless
you configure your system for Japanese default. I'm hoping that TB! will
come through. The MSIE that comes with W2k is fine for just about any
language, however. No problem with moving from Japanese to Latin or any
other char sets. Netscape works, too, so I suppose I could use that for
mail. But people used to Pegasus are looking for something like TB!, not
for toys like Netscape.

To be fair to MS, which goes against my grain , there is apparently a
"multi-language version" of Win2k, which apparently costs an arm and a leg,
but which will handle all these problems just fine. But having just paid
MS for this version, I don't really feel like contributing again. I wasn't
even *aware* of this other version, which is apparently aimed at and priced
for the corporate market, until I had already purchased this one.

T> I don't know NJ Star Comm, so cannot comment on this.

It's quite well known in the FEP world, the successor to NJWin.

That explains it then. I think we all could use a mail client that can
handle any message coming in with the appropriate language tag, no matter
what the OS is based on. I mean, we can send people to the moon, and now
here in Japan we've unveiled a humanoid robot that will actually pour you a
glass of wine. An all-purpose e-mail app shouldn't be that hard. ^_^

How about some DOS programming? I'm not sure if DOS supports FOR
loops like in Unix.

In Unix it would look something like:

for n in file1 file2 file3 file4; do
  \thebatpath\thebat.exe /MAILU=MyAccount;[EMAIL PROTECTED];Attach=${n};SEND
done

Obviously this won't work as written in either DOS or UNIX, but maybe
you can explore DOS "for loops"?

A good place to look for references to DOS programming:

http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Software/Operating_Systems/DOS/Programming/

If you don't like DOS, perhaps you can try a scripting language for
Windows. There are a couple out there that might do the job nicely.

Good luck, and if you get it to work, please let me know off-list. I

Yeap, I know. Now, try to send ten such parts of file. You will have

I thought W2K is aimed at the corporate market anyway, with it really
being NT5 and all; while Windows ME is aimed at the private user, a
newly-polished version of Win98. Oh well.

T>> I don't know NJ Star Comm, so cannot comment on this.

Ah, now I see. There were some TB users on this list that used NJWin.

Right-click on any incoming message and choose Encoding. As long as
the encoding of the message is recognised by TB, it will automatically
switch; otherwise, you can still manually switch. You need to install
the XLAT table and fonts, of course, so TB can display the message
correctly. I can read messages in Thai, but my Windows doesn't know
anything about Thai. TB does it all! :-)

However, I am not sure this works also for the subject line.

Ok, I think I found the answer. In a DOS window, try the following
line:

FOR %%v IN (01 02 03) DO c:\progra~1\thebat~1\thebat.exe
/MAILU=MyAccount;[EMAIL PROTECTED];Attach=%%v;SEND

I think that's a fair statement, but it's also aimed at power users who
like a bit more stability than the basic Windows platform is ever going to
be able to give them. But a fair amount of gaming support has been built
into W2K, so perhaps they're trying to be all things to all people as
usual. It's for anyone concerned about security, as well, since the NTFS
file system supports more security features than FAT or FAT32. I'll say
one thing for W2k Pro . . . I can't really seem to crash it, which is a new
experience for me with an MS product.

Say what? I right click on a message in the reader, and I don't get an
'Encoding' option. Neither do I seem to get it in the message list window.

Well... I do. It's called Message Encoding in the editor (under the
Options menu) and Character Set in the viewer. Talk about
inconsistency. ;-)

> But there's no Japanese support there yet anyway.

Well, you'll have to put it in, like I put in the Thai support. I
don't know where you would get a Japanese XLAT table. But it would
probably be easier for you to find it than me.

The XLAT table can either be typed in by hand (main menu: Options /
XLAT tables), or more likely, you will get it as a registry key, which
you will have to put into your registry under HKCU / Software / RIT /
The Bat! / XLT /

I got the Thai XLAT tables (for two different Thai encodings) as .reg
files that put themselves in there.

Once that is in, you will have to put a monospaced Japanese Font into
your C:\Windows\Fonts directory.

Enjoy all those messages in Japanese that will come in and be easy to
read for you even without any FEP.

I use Web2Pop to access email from Hotmail without any problems. I
have the account set up so that Mail Dispatcher is used automatically
so that I can get rid of any spam without downloading it.

The only issue is that you can only see messages which are in your

AFAIK, version 1.49c is the last official release version.

Versions 1.49d and 1.49e aren't official releases and were discovered
by members lurking the Ritlabs ftp directory for betas.

No, you haven't. TB!'s editor will wrap treating spaces as any other
characters. The first space brings the line to the character limit and
a new line is started. The second space is the first character in the
next line, giving rise to the unwanted indent. Interestingly, this
only happens when auto-format is not being used, otherwise auto-format
will remove the unwanted indent on the fly.

Color me sad?

2001-02-01 Thread Yuki Taga

All,

I cannot figure out how to add some color to the folder pane background. I
would be a shame if that's not possible, because that bright white doesn't
look so great with a slightly colored viewer and message list window. If
this is only controllable from the Windows default background, that's not
good, because it would mean the entire system would have to have the same
background color.

And on the same subject, I guess maybe this is a Delphi quirk, but when a
folder's message window is in view, if the folder has fewer messages in it
that the number required to fill the message window, then the chosen color
abruptly stops at the end of the message list. From an aesthetic
standpoint, I find that very unfortunate. The color application for the
viewer and editor appear to be perfect. Hope the other 2 can be made that
way.

Do the developers lurk here for suggestions.

Well, I stopped smoking in Nov 1999 after 26 years. There are a lot of
people changing that habit too. I also stopped having a mug of coffee
for every waking hour of the day at the same time. Habits *can* be

I'm not telling you that you must - or even /should/ - change your

What turning off auto-indent should prevent is the "creeping left
margin" phenomenon when this happens. It won't prevent a space from
taking up a real character position in the text. It is up to you to be
looking at the screen (rather than the keyboard) while typing ;-)).

Seriously though, there is nothing TB can do other than obey what you
are typing. How is TB (or the programmers teaching the editor how to
respond) supposed to know that the space you *typed* at the start of a
new line is *not* supposed to be an indentation in this instance?

I can't think of an implementation rule or a switch that would work
clearly and cleanly and not get in the way of what's *supposed* to
work.

Interestingly, this seem to work flawlessly with double spaces after
punctuation marks *and* when the spaces overrun the end of the line.
This looks like your "best bet" setting, although you will have to be
very cautious about leaving a clear line between paragraphs and about
starting to type in the blank line before a formatted block (the sig
block is *my* favourite for on-the-fly subsuming).

This is a system colour and cannot be adjusted specific to TB!. It's
the same background colour as that of most other applications

You can change it via the system properties (right click desktop and

Just between you and me, Marck, comparing smoking, a disgusting habit that
shortens and degrades life spans, with putting two spaces after a period at
the end of a sentence is a bit much.

MDP> I also stopped having a mug of coffee

But there is *nothing* inappropriate about putting two spaces after a
period at the end of a sentence. Many people think it improves
readability. The comparison, and the term 'inappropriate', seem
inappropriate to me.If large numbers of people think it improves
readability, then coders should accommodate that view.

It's a good question, but I'm sure there must be a way to do it. I can't

Hello all,

Sorry if this is a FAQ -- I am hundreds of messages behind on the

of messages to look through. So I figured I'd throw it out there in
hopes that someone would answer me.

I'm job-hunting. I want to attach my resume to e-mail messages, which
is currently a .rtf file (MS Word for PC). How should I encode it,
MIME-coded or UUEncoded? Being new to The Bat!, I'm not accustomed to
being given a choice, and I find that I don't really know the
differences between the two enough to choose one. All I need is
something that preserves the formatting of my document, really.

Thanks in advance!

It is possible. Simply set up a Replied Message filter. What I have
setup is as follows:

(In Rule Tab)

Filtering Strings: .*
Location: Sender
Presence : Yes

Add address(es) to Address Book ticked

Both preserve the formatting.

Both are provided because some /recipients/ may be capable of
receiving one format but not the other. The different formats are
about who you're sending to rather than what you're sending.

You are probably safer sticking with MIME encoding for this purpose.

Our teacher warned us against Langenscheidt when I was studying for my
English degree, seriously. Try Pons-Collin's (in Germany by Klett
Verlag) or Cassell's (both British English); or Webster's (the
standard tome for U.S. English). Of course, you will remember the the
Oxford Reader's Dictionary from school (maybe the best for British
English). I used to have both the Webster's and the Oxford Reader's
unabridged (complete) versions, but lost them during my moves across
continents and moving houses in three countries etc.

I'm a Commercial and Industrial Translator (staatl. gepruefter

Germany. I carry a seal (a round stamp) and can make official

Attachments Deleted When Message Deleted?

2001-02-01 Thread Nick Andriash

I just noticed that when a message comes in with an attachment, and I read
then delete the message, that the attachment remains in my C:\Temp Folder
despite the message having being emptied from my Trash Folder.

I was under the impression that the attachment would be deleted from me
HDD when the message that carried the attachment, was emptied from the
Trash Folder. Have I missed something in my setup?

Do you have delete attached files when message deleted from trash
selected in Account -> Properties -> Files & Directories ? This does

I save my attachments in a separate directory, and yes, I do have the
option checked for deleting attachments when messages are emptied from
Trash. I am sure it worked for me before... just now noticed that the

Yes, thanks Jan... I do have that option checked. The only difference is
that I have attachments stored in a separate Folder, so perhaps that
deletion option only applies to attachments that are stored within message
bodies. I will have to do some testing and find out, but what puzzles me,
is that I've had this configuration since day one, and can never recall a
case where attachments were left behind like they are now.

TB! v1.49 - exporting "Sent" msgs

2001-02-01 Thread Jan Rifkinson

Hello TBUDListers.

All my sent msgs are held in the "Sent" folder & held for 14 days.
However, I'd like to change that & export them automatically to an
appended text or unix file on my HD.

I know under the Actions tab in Office Sorting it is possible to do
this but my question is: which is better for my purposes: UNIX or
text? My current understanding is that UNIX format saves the headers
while text does not. If this is true, why might this important?

  Many thanks.

%QUOTESTYLE="=%CLIPBOARD" can also be a versatile little number as long as you
remember what groups and/or addresses you have it used on. I use it the
following way quite effectively:

Some of my business contacts they sometimes put their last names first in
the reply to field and the first initial quotestyle would therefore use the
first letter of their last name and I didn't find that acceptable. Using
%QUOTESTYLE="=%CLIPBOARD" I just highlight the appropriate letter, or on
occasion first name, and copy it to the clipboard before replying.

If I don't want any quotestyle I use a hot key to clear the clipboard first.

One problem, if you forget you have that active you can get some real funky
quote prefixes!

I'm fairly new to TB! myself, but I'll take a stab at these and I'm certain the
"old-timers" will set me straight if I'm incorrect! As far as I know, TB! can
retreive/send mail for web-based accounts ONLY if the web-based accounts support
POP3/SMTP (as does Yahoo email). From a quick glance at Hotmail, it doesn't
appear they support POP3/SMTP, although it seems that POP3/SMTP support is
becoming more common for web-based email accounts.

Presently no. I don't know if this is in the works or not. Personally I hope
TB! doesn't go the way of Opera and try to be everything to everybody, although
I suppose if it were done right without sacrificing quality in email
features/functionality it might be OK. Have you tried Free Agent for news? I'm
not an avid newsgroup user, but I have been much happier with Agent for my
limited news usage than I was with OLE.

None of the applications you cite do plain text formatting with
support for automatic indentation (optional). Some perform indentation
(for word processing) but need extra formatting codes to do it.

Anyway, this problem is easily overcome in the TB editor by turning on
auto-format so - case closed AFAIAC :-).

filtering message / redirect

Hi all!

I have a filter set up that, when certain criteria are met, the message is
redirected to another email address and then deleted. Although the account is
configured for immediate delivery of outgoing messages, in this case the

it possible for the redirected messages to send automatically, rather than just
being queued?

Handling bad MIME attachments

2001-02-01 Thread Gary Mort

I sometimes send and receive email through a couple of mail
relays for games.

The mail relays basically take the body of the message and write
their own headers for the message. This means that
the flags indicating a MIME attachment and what the seperator is
are lost when the mail goes through the relay.

And hence my problem, the MIME attachment is a good attachment,
properly base-64 encoded and all, but when I receive it(and
others who are in the game using The Bat as their mailer) I can't
do anything with it! Short of saving it to a text file and
hunting around for a base-64 to binary translator.(Yes, I could
use UUENCODE, but only if I send it, I can't force the other
person to do so).

So, what I would like to be able to do is simply select the MIME
text and then have the bat decode it(I can tell the bat what
decoding mechanism to use).

Is there any way to do that?

Hmm, does this mean that i have to upgrade, and is this beta at the

Yes, and sort of. This release is not a beta. It's a "bug fix"
release. Release 'e' was mainly put out for those having trouble
importing mail from Pegasus. It is only available from the RIT labs
FTP site - ftp.ritlabs.com/pub/the_bat/beta/.

2001-02-01 Thread Russ Moore

Hello TBUDL,

Quick question for you all, hopefully not to complicated :)

I wish to change the hard drive my installation of the Bat is
installed to, ie moving from D: drive to C: drive, this is due to
having to swap some of my physical hardware around between computers.
Do I have to uninstall and then reinstall (and if so, what
files/folders etc do I need to save to keep my settings mail folders
etc) or is there an easier and quicker way?

Thanks for your time.

What's the official Ritlab's line on this anyway? I'm new to the
lists(but have read through the archives) and have not been able to
find Ritlab's position on this.

Also, any schedule for a release for linux?

If the attachment was a Word or Excel document wouldn't that
application store a copy in your %TEMP% folder before opening it? In
that case, it is out of TB!'s control and knowledge.

I sure hope not Mike. When an attachment comes in, I want it placed in the
directory I choose. It doesn't or shouldn't matter what Application
produced it, or even if I have the very same Application on my HDD, the
attachment should go where I direct it to, so that I maintain full control
at all times.

When I delete the message without first saving the attachment to a
specific Folder, than I want that attachment deleted as well, which is
what I thought that checkbox was for.

I think Mike's point is that if you open an MS Office document that was an
attachment, the Office app is going to put a copy of that document in the temp
directory. TB! can't control what the Office app does with the file.

Oh, I see. Ok, I just didn't realize we had gone off topic there. I was
referring to attachments that we get in E-Mail, and what TB! does with
them when received, and why they are not deleted when the message they
were attached to, are put in the Trash Bin and then emptied.

Sorry Mike...

No problem. Dave did pick up on what I meant. I've seen the same thing
happen when I open attachments at work using Outlook and Word. You
may (or may not) be seeing the same phenomenon.

I have a macro for this mailing list to automaticaly PGP sign the
message. As I am sending this message from another account, I find
that I get the same error message -- with the "Enable S/MIME" checked.
So I have to turn of "enable S/MIME" before I can send this message --
without changing the macro to automatically sign this message.

So the problem sppears to be with the macros. What do I need to do to
avoid that error message? How do I get a S/MIME Certificate?

And what does S/MIME do? Does it encrypt attachments automatically?
