_You_ can also make _your_ box wider (which is easy anyway...) so it
will be "frozen".

Re: Ready made Spam filter

All filter are easily importable and exportable through the sorting
office copy/paste capabilities. To export a filter, mark it and hit
ctrl-c then paste it in a text editor. To import another filter, for
example my spam filters submitted below, copy all text and paste them
into the sorting office.

> I have already set up an address book called Spam and then a filter
> to avoid those addresses in future. But I think I need another to
> get rid of the obvious junk.

I use three filters, one that filter on certain words like teen, porn
and so forth, another to filter on certain patterns (4 spaces in a row
in the subject line or 4 digits in a row in either the subject och the
senders address) and a third, placed above the two others, to stop TB
from filtering messages with certain words. The first two filters does
not filter messages from addresses in my address book.

I do not argue that these filters are perfect, but they does suite my
needs, they pick about 95% of all the spam I get. Unfortunately, they
do filter about one message a month which should not get filtered. I
suppose that's hard to avoid :-(

This filter will however not work if you keep your address book with
addresses to avoid, since they never take actions on mails from known
senders.

Before you copy/paste the filters below, make sure to edit the folders
to suite your setup. Place them in the same order that I have done in
this mail.

Hello Sebastian, This is a reply to your message dated
Tuesday, April 2, 2002, 4:59:49 PM, when you wrote:

S> I would like BAT to do a completion of my text as I write it.

I don't think you can do it *as* you write it but...

S> Things that I have to write about 10 times a day, like my address
S> (don't want a signature), I would like to have BAT insert when I
S> type ZZZ for example, just some digits or letters - is that

S> address that goes across 4 or 5 lines.

Just create a "quick template" (ctrl-shift Q) that includes your
address and any other information you want and name it say "add" or
something simple. Then, when you get to the point where you want to
have your address appear, just type "add" and hold down ctrl and hit
the space bar. The word "add" will be replaced by the text you
specified in the quick template.

Act! 2000 and The Bat

2002-04-04 Thread Robert Dickson

Hello Folks,

I have a question for all of you. At work I am required to use Act!
2000, which is a very nice contact manager/scheduler/CRM software.
One of the features I like about it is that is has some very powerful
search routines and allows you to index notes with your contacts. It
integrates well with a few outside email applications like Outlook and
Eudora. I was wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to use TB
with Act. I tried a few sample setups and can get Act to act as it's
own email client and I have had it integrated with outlook before but
no luck getting it to read email from TB.

Any suggestions, or am I going to be out of luck here?

Best regards,
 Robert mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

It's *much* easier to filter mail that you expect, rather than to
filter mail that you don't expect. If you are going to do things your
way, then it's best to just purchase an application like Spamkiller
, where the developer makes a living
creating these sorts of filters to catch spam mail, and even then, it
tends to catch a lot of my good mail. I stopped using it, refined my
exclusion approach to spam filtering (if it's not a message directly
for me, then it's spam) and it now works better than 'spamkiller'.
Note that Spamkiller uses about 1500 filter rules and you have to
update it periodically.

Create filters for all mail that you expect, i.e., discussion list
mail, newsletter mails and announcements, mail from your friends and
family and finally mail from your address book addresses.

You can also create an address book group and a filter to place in
your address book, addresses for mail in your Inbox, that you replied
to.

The final filter in the list will be a filter that places all messages
not caught by the previous filter into your spam folder. With time,
the few messages from legitimate sources that reach your spam folder
will diminish as you create filters for them either directly, or when
you reply to them and their addresses are added to your special
address book group.

This is much easier than going through spam each day and trying to
figure out how to filter the new ones that found their way in your
Inbox. I haven't seen a spam in my Inbox for three weeks, since I
stopped using SpamKiller and refined my filtering.

As someone already pointed out that depends on the christian sect

Roman (incl. Protestant and Anglican), Greek and Russian use different

different calendars altogether.

Add to this the history of our (Western) Easter - a combination of
Germanic, Celtic, Jewish, pre-Jewish and christian spring celebrations
- and virtually everyone could have his own Easter, according, for

Thanks for those filters, I will almost certainly use them.

What about all the foreign character rubbish I get?

For example, I have several with subject lines as follows:

Not quite true as most spammers use certain things in their headers
which betray its spam.
Filtering on subject is useless, check 'send to', send from and
similar things and you will see lots of ways to get rid of 95% of all
spam.
Obviously one should first remove any mailing lists and other stuff
one knows but hitting spam is easy.

You donot need that many.
First grab the ones you are sure are yours and then tackle the spam.
Not to you is one way but others are the undisclosed recipients and
similar rubbish and anyway, you inspect by hand whats left, its really
not that difficult with 500 emails coming in per day to have maybe one
spamletter...

My panel with mailheaders fits on the rest of my screen and I prefer
to see that and anyway if all I want to see is folder names and how
many new messages it shouldnt move anywhere if thats visible...

For the string setting you use only @ (every email contains this), but
the filtering is done based on the advanced tab, scroll down and you
will find selections for sender must be listed or not listed in
address book.

I suppose there are lots of people here that still have a copy of
1.53d lingering around and who just like me are willing to send you a
copy when you'd ask it (of list preferably).

I don't think you'd lose any mail, since I up- and downgraded a few

I use the charset information to filter that stuff out. If there's something
like charset=big5 or charset=ks_c_5601-1987 in the headers, it gets kicked.
Use charset=.*ks_c_5601-1987 and check Regular expressions to also filter
out mails that say charset="ks_c_5601-1987" or the like.

Filtering against a file of strings

2002-04-04 Thread Clif Oliver

First, I wanted to say "thanks" to everyone who have been posting such
great tips on using filters for spam collection/elimination. I have
learned more about filters from this discussion in the last week than
in the year+ I've been using TB!.

Question: based on the tips given, I've figured out how to use
alternate strings in a single rule (a | b), and alternate sets ((a &
b) | (c & d)), and checking the entire address against an address
book.

What I would like to do is filter against an external file of strings.
That is, if sender contains any of the strings stored in file "bad
domains" or "trigger words", where said file would simply be one
string per line in the file.

Can this be done?

While I can see keeping a "table" of strings in the rule itself either
with "|" or with alternate sets, I am concerned with whatever
limitations there might be on the size of a filter rule. Also, an
external file is, IMO, easier to maintain and share with my
associates.

Thanks to all for interesting and helpful information coming across
this list.

Clif

Last succesfull pop

2002-04-04 Thread Ricardo M. Reyes

The other day I had problems with an account that´s very important to
me, and where I receive messages almost constantly. The server was
down almost all day and I realiced I needed to know when was the last
time that I could contact it succesfully and retrieve messages.

Searching in the log was very tedius, so I think it may be an easy but
usefull feature for a next version: to be able to see, for every
account, _when_ was the last time that the server could be contacted
without problems, wether there were messages to pop or not. That way
you can always say "I´m sure I have all the messages at least up to
3PM"

What do you think about that?

I found this method on TBUDL. Unfortunately I don't know who posted
it, so I can't give proper credit for it.

1. Copy the subject line of one of the foreign character emails.

2. For convenience, open a new message and paste the subject of step 1
into the text of the new message. All operations performed below will
be performed in the message's text field.

3. Delete any characters in the subject that might conceivably be part
of the subject of a message you might want to read. (Perhaps,
particularly if you're British, you might not want to filter out
messages with £ in the subject, perhaps you would.)

4. Delete all but one occurrence of each character that is duplicated.
(There are two À , delete one of them.)

5. Separate the adjacent remaining characters with pipe signs ( | ).
No pipe sign at the start or end of the string, however. (Thus
operating on all of the remaining characters, with an inclusive OR.)

6. Copy the pipe-sign separated string into your "foreign character
rubbish" filter, with Llocation: Subject, Presence: Yes.

If any message should get through the filter, work on that message's
subject string in the same way. If you're particularly fussy, as I
am, perhaps you'd like to eliminate any characters already present in
your filter. Add the new pipe-sign-separated string to your "foreign
character rubbish" filter, with location: Subject, Presence: yes. (I
now have three such strings in my filter.)

Sure. I'm saying that it's more difficult to keep your Inbox free of

Only when using selective download filters. I don't know why that
feature is only provided for the selective download filtering. Note
that this filter acts at the server level and will therefore only
search the messages headers which are initially downloaded and
inspected. If using selective download filters, your downloading will
be slowed by the initial downloading of only the message headers.

Park while checking?

2002-04-04 Thread Karin Spaink

Due to too much traffic on my webservers, connections are
slow. That gives me ample time to study the connection
centre.

In the top screen, there's an up- or down-arrow, depending
on whether mail is being sent or fetched. After the arrow is
a small dot.

I clicked on it. The blue square P for 'parked message'
appeared instead of the dot. _Parked_ fetching mail? What is
that supposed to do?

That seems to be perfectly acceptable for known spam domains that use
changing user IDs and subdomains to get by an address book filter.

Since this capability is not present on regular incoming filters, does
any know what the upper limit on signal strings or alternate sets is?

Makes sense. I assume this "pre-download" of headers is triggered by
the presence of at least one Selective Download rule in the account?

These filters get more impressive with each passing day :-)

Formatting cookies

2002-04-04 Thread David Denton

Hello TB! users,

I am able to wrap text in a cookie (using %WRAPPED="%COOKIE='c: etc.)
but how do you wrap the main text and then have the attribution on the
following line and indented, as in the text, below.

A puff of wind, a puff faint and tepid and laden with strange odours
of blossoms, of aromatic wood, comes out the still night—the first
sigh of the East on my face. That I can never forget. It was
impalpable and enslaving, like a charm, like a whispered promise of
mysterious delight The mysterious East faced me, perfumed like a
flower, silent like death, dark like a grave.
-- CONRAD, Joseph (Teodor Josef Konrad Korzeniowki) (1857-1924)

I have tried using \n preceding the attribution part, but this does
not seem to work.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re[2]: Ready made Spam filter

2002-04-04 Thread Roberto Machorro

The best results I've had with my spam filtering is to actually create
a folder per group or subject (clubs, relatives, work, e-news, etc.).
I have a folder for each mailing list, project, etc., if it doesn't
fall into any of those categories, filter it against your AddressBook,
then make sure you are the recipient.

Make it so directly targeted that all that's left is most probably
spam, as a side benefit you have a very organized e-mail repository.

Might be overkill for some, but at least I don't have to deal with
spam anymore, it's the best mail filter I've used.

Parking a message guards that message against accidental deletion of

Date related cookies

2002-04-04 Thread GJim

Howdy Ladies and Gents,

I am interested in starting to attach cookies to my outgoing messages.
Some of the cookies on this list, especially those of Jernej Simonèiè
are simply great!

However, I would like to use history related cookies, specifically
tying today's date to a particular cookie that relates what happened
in the 'Old West' on this date in history.

Has anyone used such a feature in TB! so far?

Basically, the cookie file would have up to 366 entries, each entry
being one or more lines. The cookie macro would have to find the
entry matching the current month and day.

I thought the filters weren't held in an editable file. Where (what
file) do I paste the attached filters into?

Also ... how do you add spaces to the set in a filter list. If i use
the space bar (or the ALT number), the filter won't save it. If I
could filter say 5 contiguous spaces in the subject, I would get rif of
90% or more of the spam that DOES make it through.

You can park a task, so you can read the log after the task has finished

Unfortunately, this is not possible with the %WRAPPED macro. You'll have
to insert \n manually into your cookies. Then you can use something
like, "... grave.\n -- CONRAD ...". If you try to combine \n and
the %WRAPPED macro, the cookie is wrapped at the \n and afterwards is
rewrapped by the macro, thus destroying your manual line break.

As I wrote in the email you answered to, paste it into the sorting
office. Open the sorting office, expand Incoming mail and hit ctrl-v.

When viewing the filters I posted, I see that the line of words to
filter on in the filter called "Spam" has been divided over a number
of lines. Make sure to edit this to be just one line before you paste
it into the sorting office.

Create a filter with regular expression activated and use '\s' in the
filtering string. That matches one white-space character. As you can
see in my "Spam 2"-filter I'm using '\s\s\s\s' which matches all mail
with four or more white-space characters in a row.

That won't work, but what will work is 366 files and constructing the
file name with a regular expression to pick the correct date file to
