Just copy the Message ID with '<' and '>' to the clipboard. It may be
useful to display the Message ID in the Message Header.

Yeah, you've got a little work ahead of you to get the mailing list
up. Here's all the places you'll need to change the paths.

- Account properties/templates/New Message and Reply
- Sorting office/Incoming mail
  - TBLH Subscribe/Actions tab/Send Auto Reply and Run External
Program.
  - TBLH Subscribe Failure/Actions tab/Send Auto Reply
  - TBLH Unsubscribe/Actions tab/Send Auto reply and Run External
Program.
  - TBLH Unsubscribe Failure/Actions tab/Send Auto Reply
  - TBLH Post/Actions tab/Create a Message For
  - TBLH Post failure/Actions tab/Send Auto Reply
- Subscribers folder properties/Template and Reply tabs
- Unsubscribers folder properties/Template and Reply tabs

And if you're planning a digest mode

- Digest folder properties/Template and Reply tabs

Which I'm glad I looked at, because it's wrong. I need to fix that and
re-upload it to the TBLH FAQ page.

That'll take care of all of it. BTW that FAQ is modelled off the The
Bat! List Hosters (TBLH) list which is for all of us running lists
under The Bat!.

You can subscribe at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It's free and at the moment almost non-existant traffic. I guess I
wrote the FAQ too well, because not many people seem to be having
problems with it.

I tried color groups. Works fine! As you mention you can only assign one

Oh dear. I was a little unsure about using that word, in case it meant
something rude somewhere else in the world. In fact, In New Zealand it
is descriptive of what a pig does when looking for food. I was going
to use the phrase "root around", but that really can mean something
rude in New Zealand depending on the person who hears it. Double
meanings and all that stuff. So you can imagine me with my snout
firmly rammed into the software interface, snorting and snuffling as I
search for hidden goodies.

I think I need to create a quick template for this.

If you wish to make a new query, which really is to post a new message
on a new subject to the list, you should hit the new message button
instead of simply replying to someone else's message and changing the
subject.

Replying to someone elses message will create unwanted references to
the message being replied to, and your new message to the list will be
threaded with the message referred to in the headers.

If you insist on posting a new message on a new topic to the list by
replying to another message, *please* enable the 'follow-up' to
header field in your editor (View/follow-up To) as shown in the
screenshots.

Then delete the contents of the 'follow-up' field when the reply

Now that's am interesting thought. I just scrapped my old Epson (worn

noticed anything like a preview in the setup for it, but I'll have a
good rootle around in there again to make sure. Many thanks for
bringing it up. Maybe all printer manufacturers could make a preview

Hello Paul,

I have my messages threaded by references. That means that messages
are threaded by message ID references. The message ID reference that
is in your message header refers to Michael Disabato's message
entitled: "Eudora Import Doesn't Work".

Here's the part of *your* message header that shows what you were
"replying" to:

Date: Sun, 7 Apr 2002 18:53:04 -0400

Subject: editor quirks
In-Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
References: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

So... unless something *very* unusual happened, it looks as if you
were reading Michael's message, then hit "Reply", re-named the subject
line, and wrote/sent your message.

Naaah, I don't like big companies. Too noisy! I've been the only one

environment. So much that some times I even think that my desktop fan
is too noisy. ;-)

When VA started its main market was as an OLR for Compuserve Forums
(including binary libraries) and CIX, although it could also handle
Internet mail and Usenet. That perhaps made it some what peculiar in
some concepts and structure and with a steep learning curve at first.
But it was great for a number of years. And actually it is still is,
but it is now a little outdated in some features.

No, I don't think there is any way to forward those messages, at least

editor quirks

2002-04-07 Thread Paul Cartwright

I was just forwarding a message to someone, and here's what happened.
I hit forward and it puts me int he editor at the bottom of the
message text. I highlight all the text I can see ( which is only
about 10 lines of a 40-line message). I hit DELETE and the text goes
away, leaving me with an empty screen. the right-hand slider bar is
not there, making me think there is no text left. yet when I hit the
UP arrow, it begins to scroll thru the message again, and magically
the slider bar appears ! I had noticed this before ( other message
forward), but I thought I had just highlighted the complete message
and wiped out all the text, so I quit and reforwarded it.
 does this make sense ?
 thanks,
 Paul

Actually, for my own reasons (as stated in another message in this
thread), I don't advise to disable PGP wrap settings.

As I've mentioned before - that strategy only really works if you only
use PGP with a particular type of message editor. If you need to use
PGP for wider uses, with a variety of editors, a wrap setting in PGP
can be very useful.

So - instead of simply advising people to disable PGP wrapping, I
usually recommend finding relative settings that work with a variety
of different editors.

> I also was given the advice to disable auto format because it messed
> up my PGP sig. Since then no problems anymore.

Auto-format in TB! will no more mess up PGP signatures than will
auto-wrap (in other words, if relative wrap settings are properly set,
it won't mess anything up).

Auto-format only messes things up when you want to make a list, or
short lines - with no blank line in between (auto-format wants to wrap
all lines not separated by a blank line into single paragraphs).

Still - this has nothing to do with messing up PGP signatures.

> So in short: disable PGP wrapping and auto format should keep you

I disagree (see above). What you really need to do is think about how
each editing option works, then use them accordingly. "Auto-format"
will wrap text to the very same column as "auto-wrap" will, so if
one's PGP wrap is set to a greater number, messages will not be
re-wrapped by PGP, and signatures will be fine.

Smart decision. Assuming they resumed development immediately (and
with Pete in the team), I don't think they could come out with a
"decent" new version in less than one year. Some parts of VA are quite
old code that needs complete re-writing and that is not done over a

For those who do NOT have a program that TB! imports the messages, all
they have to do is export their messages into a Unix-mailbox type. I used
VA which could could save the messages in VA's original format. Miguel was
kind enough to provide the search strings to fix the headers in a text
editor such as TextPad to convert the file into Unix-mailbox type. You
then imported the converted file into TB! as a Unix-mailbox type.

I'm not certain what you are trying to say here. I think you are trying
to tell me the account name is stored in the registry. So if I import the
pertinent portion of the registry into the other OS, I'm okay. But since
I have only installed TB! once for the trial, it may ask for the account

I don't know, so please clarify. TIA!

I've noticed this bug myself as well. The reason is a typo that caused

It is scanning consistently with the above settings as AVG is RESIDENT.
Shortly after the attachment reaches your attachment folder AVG will inform

FinePrint is well worth the money. I have saved over 50% of my
printing costs since I started using it about 18 months ago.
Also, the added functionality is worth the cost alone.

Hello Dierk. Just downloaded the trial version of FinePrint and tried

I have AVG set under RESIDENT SHIELD with all boxes checked then SAVE

un-checked. Every virus that has come in via e-mail here has been identified

IMHO VA was NOT the best at everything. It was the fact that ONLY 1 user
interface was needed for CIS forums, e-mail, & newsgroups. It not only
covered ALL the bases, but did so in ONLY 1 pass over multiple news
servers, e-mail accounts, and CIS. The fact you could use 1 program to do
ALL pretty good was what endured me to VA.

Interesting ride is more like it. What it did was force me to look at
other programs which expanded my experience. The most interesting part is
reading how loyal users defend the program of their choice. The learning
curve is NOT an easy hill to climb especially when you are trying to be
productive. In most instances their defense is rooted in the fact that
they've used it for so long, and feel comfortable with it. If they would
open their mind to achieving the same goal a different way, then the
learning would probably be easier.

Right. That's what I do. :-)

I generally want email I send to be wrapped within my preferred column
setting - whether it includes quoted text or not. As long as I'm not
changing the meaning or necessary context by re-flowing someone's
quoted material to my preferred setting, I see no problem with the
practice.

Sometimes, especially with email sent either via inferior clients, or
by careless senders, the only way to make a reply look "decent" is to
re-flow the quoted text.

In this case, your original suggestion is one that will work for you
and others in your situation, i.e., to set the PGP wrapping to 2 or so
characters above the TB! setting and 2 or so characters below the wrap
setting for other clients that reflow text upon sending *after* pgp
has done its own text reflowing.

The drawback is that in TB! you will have to ensure that you reflow
quoted material that doesn't exceed the PGP wrap setting or else
your quoted material will be messed up by PGP wrapping when it signs.

Hello Jernej,

Disable PGP's wrapping? (more on this in a bit)

Unless what I'm quoting *must* remain quoted at a certain column to
retain the original sender's formatting intentions, I re-wrap quotes
to my own TB! wrap setting as part of my composition.

For instance - I prefer a wrap setting of 70 characters. If you send
me a message with a wrap set to 76 characters, and the only difference
being that your paragraphs are wider than my preferred width, I'll be
happy to re-wrap your quoted text in my reply to my preferred 70
characters - as part of *my* reply composition.

It is a very rare instance when a bit of quoted material must be
quoted without being re-wrapped to the replier's preferred wrap
setting. Perhaps in the case of quoting "ascii art", wrapped at a
greater column number, but how often must we do that sort of thing?

About disabling PGP's wrapping altogether...

If you only use PGP with clients/editors that deal with wrapping in
one uniform "WYSIWYG" way, then that's fine. However - if you use PGP
with several different clients/editors, and some deal with wrapping
differently than others, there is a place for having a wrap set in
PGP. This is my situation, so I prefer having a wrap set in PGP.

In any event, I've worked out relative wrap settings between my
PGP/GnuPG and my various editors so that I don't have to change
settings anywhere, and wrapping/signing do not come into conflict.

I've tried VA and I can sympathise with its former users. VA has quite
an unusual/different approach to design and how things are done. I
tried it especially for Newsgroups, but its methods were so different
that I couldn't make the change, especially since I wasn't convinced
that it provided a better solution for my needs than Agent or X-News
did.

I guess the reverse would also apply in that migrating from VA to TB!
could be an awkward ride at first. But there are features in TB! that
can make you feel at home. It's just a different approach to get
accustomed to.

Good luck!

viruses and AVG ?

2002-04-07 Thread Rick Reumann

I checked the Bat archives but I'd like some more detailed
instructions on how people have configured AVG to run with The Bat! I
currently have two files in my inbox that I'm pretty sure our
viruses.. one titled "A Special Good Tool" and the other "Hi, Rick,
Welcome to my hometown." I just downloaded AVG and run a full
computer check and it came up clean. I than ran another just on the
whole Bat directory, still clean. The question I have is, even if
these aren't viruses, what is the best way to set up AVG to just scan
for e-mail viruses. I heard some mention that you need to have the
attachments go into a separate folder vs staying within the message.
Is that true? or should AVG still pick up the viruses if you keep the
attachments within the message body? What I don't want happening is
all the messages to be downloaded and then my brother or wife (who
both you my computer with the Bat) to be able to click on a
virus-infected attachment before AVG has a chance to check it.

If there are any other decent virus checkers that work well with the
Bat (preferably free:), please let me know.

Hello Luc,

It's not really "tricky" at all. In fact, with an editor like The
Bat!'s, PGP compatibility is easier than with most other email
clients.

Since TB! creates hard returns at the wrap setting of your choice, all
you have to do is set your PGP wrap to a couple characters greater
than your TB! wrap. This way, your signed message will look *exactly*
as it does when you finish typing, and the signature will be "good".

Also, as you can see in the header, I've changed my e-mail address so
if you want to contact me directly, please use this instead of the

As RITLabs has released the IntPack by now, and therefore the
translation is more generally available, we could go two ways:

* Set up a separate discussion list for Dutch The Bat! users
* Change the current list into a general discussion list

There is no problem for me in running more than one list (I have
several for multiple domains on my mailserver already).

I don't want to use the Inbox-Known mailfolders either, but there are

This can easily be avoided. Assuming you use only one addressbook for
your autocomplete and don't depend on information in the LDAP-styled
address books, you can simply create a new Address Book for the
spammers and define a group 'Spammers' there. Then in the filter you
can refer to that group (you need the group because the filter works
with groups, not address books).

In Options->Preferences->System you set autocomplete to work only from
the standard addressbook (assigned to the account) and optionally
include the input history.

Re: Newsgroups with The Bat! and MailTraq

2002-04-07 Thread Sebastian

Miguel, THANK YOU! It works great now, and I really appreciate the
work you put into this - WOW! :)

One thing though: how do I get Mailtraq to get NEW news? I got about
2,000 messages last nite from one newsgroup, but it doesn't seem to
get new ones - though it says "last collection at
whatevertimewas10minutesago" - is that normal? I have nothing to
download anymore into THE BAT.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you,

Sebastian. :)

PS: Also, I have a newsgroup that is downloaded (about 1,500
messages), but that I had not activated the gateway for when I first
started out. Now I have the messages but it doesn't forward them to my
mailbox - again, what am I doing wrong? THANK YOU!

No you can't. TB! cannot fetch mail from a http-server.

If you really want to do this you can prob. use an external program like
http://pop3hot.com/. The downside is that you have to pay for it. I
was on a pegasus-user-list for a while and this question popped up
frequently.. And I've never heard of a free program which can do this.

(never used it myself btw)

Thanks ! I think I'll just try to work with my current email and get
used to filters

Hmm.. TB! has an import-feature for Eudora.. If that doesn't work.. I
don't know what will.. The mail-inbox wizard has an option for Eudora.

I'm thinking that his version 4.X is not current, the latest is 5.X
and his older version doesn't work the same. He says the import either
locks up, or finishes with no entries being imported.

hmm.. If you made a filter for this list, for directing mail to a
specific folder, you can keep your inbox clean.

Haico

I'll change from digest once I get the filter working, thanks !

and thanks to Roelof Groetjes and Dierk Haasis for your responses also !
I'll work more on the filters. being an old UNIX guy ( awk sed..) I'm

I've just joined this list and seen your comments about VA. Without
doubt, VA shaped my Internet experience when I first plugged my modem
into the wall some years ago. Like you, I just hope someone picks it

You can use mid:%SETPATTREGEXP='<(.*)>'%REGEXPMATCH='%OMSGID' in your
reply-template.

If you want to refer to a third mail use as quick template:
mid:%SETPATTREGEXP='<(.*)>'%REGEXPMATCH='%CLIPBOARD'
Just copy the mid into the clipboard can call the template.

Is it possible to add a "search the message" in the context menu of links
like <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>?

Filters for mailinglist

2002-04-07 Thread Marion

Hello tbudl,

I am struggling with setting up a mailinglist with TheBat.
The most important part seems to be the filters, but I cannot find the
predefined ones. Probably due to a different path for my installation
of the Bat.

My TB! is located at e:\TheBat
The path that is defined for the files in the zip I downloaded is c:\program
files\The Bat\Mail.
In the manual it says to adjust the path in de templates and the
filters, but I don't seem to be able to find where to do so.
That might be the reason the filters don't show up in the sorting
office.

Can someone enlighten me, please?

Hi all,

when I use the message-id macro (%OMSGID) in a template it produces
something like this: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.

In order to have TB! open the respective message instead of a new editor
window however it has to look like this:
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]">mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Can I achieve this display automatically or is manual editing the only
way?

I use Windows scheduler to backup TB! each night.

First I run

C:\WINNT\regedit.exe /e "C:\Program Files\The Bat!\MAIL\TheBat.reg"
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\RIT

to export TB!'s register settings, then - a few minutes later - I
backup "C:\Program Files\The Bat!\MAIL\*".

Of course you could modify this to suite your needs, you could for
example create a batch file which exports the registry settings and
then zip or rar "C:\Program Files\The Bat!\MAIL\*".

Maybe. But that would make it impossible to use certain characters at
the beginning of a line.

Personally, I like the idea of having *one* character as a quote sign as
the de facto standard and *not* making it configurable. There are too
many people out there who would jump on such a feature and make "§"
their default quote sign (or something even more stupid) just to be
different from all the others.

No it isn't but I know now when it comes up:

doing it to another folder I got the error-message again..

So I copied a message from that folder to another and moved the copy

And it's not really a problem :-) It's not good, but I'll just treat

It would be a good idea to make it configurable like Agent does i,
