Re: The bat is a virus. goodbye

2002-05-01 Thread Michael L. Wilson

Messages have been posted about this and no help. The fact that I have to
rebuild me entire message base just to read the posts makes it difficult to
interact. Any help? Give it. I'll listen and try it. I refuse to use a
Microsoft Product for email, so to keep the discussion going, I have no
choice but Eudora.

Re: The bat is a virus. goodbye

2002-05-01 Thread Michael L. Wilson

Greetings,
I have been a TB user for years. I love it. I use it all the time. I
even tried some beta releases with never a major problem. I download 1.60h
and the next day (after my computer has been off all night), I turn it on
and all my mail is gone. I have backed up my TBB files, so I rebuild
everything. Next day, all my mail is gone. So, I uninstall everything,
delete the directory and install 1.60c and rebuild (by this time, two of my
TBB message files will not import into 1.60c). The next day, all my mail
is gone. You tell me...

Re: POP3 mail management question

2002-05-01 Thread Joseph N.

Yes, the feature works. But it wouldn't get you anywhere with the
configuration you outlined.

I believe that if you check both the 'keep on server for x days' and
also the 'delete when deleted from trash,' then TB! takes the earlier
of the two, i.e., it looks at them as disjunctive, as 'or.' When you
then also set TB! to delete trash on exit, the end result is that your
mail will be deleted from the server each time you exit The Bat!

It's hard to make a recommendation without knowing what you want to
accomplish. (For me, the goal is to keep messages on the server until
they are likely to have been backed up from my local machine, which is
at least daily. Consequently, I keep them on the server for 2 days,
delete them when they're deleted from trash, but then also configure
my trash to keep messages for 2 days ('keep in msg base for 2 days,'
'remove old msgs,' and 'compress folder on exit'). I generally do not
manually delete the trash, unless there's a lot of spam, or infected
email, that I want to delete as soon as possible from my machine and
from the server.)

On a different note, unless you really need to check for msgs every 3
minutes, that's a lot of load on all resources involved. Perhaps
every 10 or 20 minutes would be sufficient?

Dragging Folders and misc.

2002-05-01 Thread mocha9mail

1. How do you drag a Account to a different location? I created a
Common $Known$ folder. It was put at the bottom of the Account list.
I managed to drag it to the top so it is the first "account" in the
tree. Now I want to put it between Account 2 and 3; and I have no
luck in changing the order. It refuse to budge from the top. I know
you drag by holding down the Alt key. Where do you drag the cursor
to? And when do you release the mouse and the Alt key?

2. I jumped from v1.53 to 1.60c. Is there a way in this version to
set the default view to "only unread messages" so that I don't
have to do View | Display | Only Unread messages every time I
   launch The Bat?

3. What does SmartBat (under Tools) do?

Thanks in advance

IIRC members of this list would reference another message in the list

Is there a shortcut for doing this in TB!? I scan the FAQ without

I wouldn't want my PGP/GPG implementation to be only bound to TB!
since I use PGP/GPG outside the scope of e-mail. I therefore store my
PGP keys in one place to be used by TB! and for other purposes (even
across machines).

The same principle holds for an S/MIME certificate since it can be
used outside the scope of e-mail as well. I see you aren't interested
or have use for your S/MIME certificate outside e-mail. This is the
potential advantage that I was siting. One central point from where it
can be managed.

But hey, the choice of where to manage your keys from is there (not
currently in the broken 1.60h) and that's what choice is for. Your
mileage may vary and your needs may be different. No problem there.

Re: A Disgrace for TB! To Be CNET's "Pick"?

2002-05-01 Thread Avenarius

So TB! is in CNET's top4, huh? The ratio of 96:4 is meaningless as you
have to discount the massive advertising (IncrediMail) and
preinstalled-on-most-machines (Outlook Express) factors, along with
the fact that most of the 96% have never heard of any alternatives to
IncrediCrap -- in contrast to the 4%, most of whom only came to use
alternative products after having suffered at the hands of Outlook and
its ilk. The 96% figure would be much lower if these people gave other
products a try.

Yes, it works, but add an extra day to the amount you actually enter
in the field. There's a semantic explanation for the method behind
that apparent 'flaw'. It works well once you make the corrections for
this. So if you need the messages deleted after 3 days, enter 2 there.

POP3 mail management question

2002-05-01 Thread Mark Knipfer

Does the "Keep messages on server for [N ] days" feature actually work? I
have attempted to use this feature in other programs where it did not
work.

I thought about using these settings in TheBat!:

Account | Properties | Mail management
  (*) Leave messages on server
[v] Keep messages on server for[3 ] days
[v] Delete message from server when it is removed from the Trash

Account | Properties | Options
  [ ] Check mailbox at start-up
  [v] Periodical checking each [3 ] [minutes ]
[v] Empty Trash folder on exit

where I could allow TheBat! to maintain my POP3 mail for me.

In TheBat! 1.60h here are my pertinent settings:

Account | Properties | Mail management
  (*) Leave messages on server
[v] Delete message from server when it is removed from the Trash

Account | Properties | Options
  [ ] Check mailbox at start-up
  [v] Periodical checking each [3 ] [minutes ]
[v] Empty Trash folder on exit

When I deleted an e-mail to the Trash folder, exited and ran TheBat!
again, I was not waiting long enough for TheBat! to check e-mail based on
my time interval setting. If I had (or have) "Check mailbox at start-up"
feature selected, then TheBat! would have deleted the marked e-mails for
deletion on the mail server.

This feature is working in TheBat! 1.60h. I was just too impatient with
the almost correct TheBat! settings. :)

Thank you for your help and patience.

It will still be there since you didn't give TB! a chance to update
the server. It does this with each POP check. You need to do a mail
check *before* running the dispatcher to check the server to see if
the message was deleted.

It works just fine here.

Exactly, since it was deleted when you downloaded the 'test 2'

Yes. It will be deleted when you perform the next regular POP check.

This is because you haven't performed a POP check while doing all that
and it's the only time the messages get deleted.

MK> However, if you send a "Test 3" message, receive and delete the

There you go... You did a POP check to download 'Test 3', do 'Test 2'
is deleted in the process.

It's definitely working just fine at your end.

that TB! could delete the messages and then checked the server .. they
were gone.

I then tried it across a shutdown, and it also worked. Remember that
TB! does the deletion upon the next mail check. If you shutdown and
restart, it's when you check for mail for the first time that TB!
updates the server, deleting the relevant messages.

Update..

Steps to reproduce bug and delete messages from mail server:

1. Send an e-mail to yourself "Subject: Test 1".

2. Receive the "Subject: Test 1" message.

3. Delete the "Subject: Test 1" message to the Trash folder.

4. Exit TheBat! 1.60h.

5. Run TheBat! 1.60h. The message from the Trash folder is done. click
Account | Dispatch Mail On Server | All Messages and the "Test 1" message
is still there.

6. Send another test e-mail to your self "Subject: Test 2".

7. Receive the "Subject: Test 2" message. Delete it to the Trash folder.

8. Exit TheBat! 1.60h.

9. Run TheBat! 1.60h. Click Account | Dispatch Mail On Server | All
Messages and you will notice the "Test 1" message is no longer present on
the mail server and the "Test 2" message is still on the mail server and
marked for deletion. If you exit and run TheBat! 1.60h again and again,
the "Test 2" message remains marked for deletion on the mail server.

However, if you send a "Test 3" message, receive and delete the message,
then the "Test 2" message will get deleted from the mail server when it
has already been deleted from the Trash folder much earlier. This is
definitely a bug in TheBat! 1.60h. If this feature actually worked
correctly, this would be great.

If you want to delete the message(s) marked for deletion on the mail
server on the last exit, the next time you run TheBat! you will need to
manually delete them from the mail server through the Dispatch Mail On
Server | All Messages feature.

I wonder when RIT Labs will fix this bug. I am thinking about switching
over to TheBat! and this is one main feature I would like to use.

Is there a way to set up TheBat! to purge on exit?

Otherwise I will need to click Folder | Purge all folders or

We're still working on it. Here's what you should do. Switch sending
to "deferred" and turn off "Combined delivery" (Account Properties |
Transport). When you put a completed, signed message in the outbox,
switch your focus to the outbox. If it has worked, you'll see the
S/MIME signature right there on the message. If the message looks
plain and flat - no attachment with a tick, no tick on the envelope
icon in the message list, it's still not working. Tweak settings and
persevere with the permutations until you see the S/MIME signature
icons. At that point, you'll know you've fixed it.

Does this help?

Inbox - Known is merely a "suggested serving" folder to use as a
target for the new filter in the sorting office. If you change
the target folder of that filter or disable it, you can safely remove
the folder. The filter is a quick and easy "elimination"
filter to quickly move mail from "known" people (according to your
address book) out of the Inbox, leaving potential spam behind.

BUT - if you remove the filter, TB will auto-create the filter next
time you start it and, at that point, recreate the Inbox - known
folder. (at least, that's what it did when we were testing it on
TBBETA).

Deleted and removed Trash folder messages remain on mail server - bug?

2002-05-01 Thread Mark Knipfer

In TheBat! 1.60h I have the following settings:

Account | Properties | Mail management
  (*) Leave mesages on server
[v] Delete message from server when it is removed from the Trash

Account | Properties | Options
[v] Empty Trash folder on exit

When I delete an e-mail, the message goes to the Trash folder. When I
exit TheBat! 1.60h, all messages in the Trash folder get deleted. When I
run TheBat! 1.60h again, no messages appear in the Trash folder. However,
when I click Account | Dispatch Mail On Server | All Messages, I see the
message(s) on the mail server showing the Delete checkbox checked, but the
message(s) do not delete from the mail server. The message appear marked
for deletion and always remain there.

How can I get TheBat! 1.60h to remove these messages on the mail server
based on the above settings?

According to TheBat! 1.60h Help file:

  Mail management Settings

Delete message from server when it is removed from Trash - use
this option if you want your messages to be kept on the server
until you delete them and they are removed from the trash folder.

Mine is double that as I have a separate account subscribed to all
four lists, as an archive where the messages are kept for 60 days.

J> How can we/you spend all our time nit-picking the program of our choice every
J> time we sign-on to the net??

The percentage of "nit-picking" is really very low and usually from
only a few people who think The Bat! should perform some function like
their previous e-mailer did. Which is not in itself a bad thing.

This is the most "user friendly" mail list I have ever been involved
with. Where else can you ask a question and get 3, 4 or five viable
answers within five minutes?

J> Easier for me to go back to OE and not have to read 200 questions/ day about TB.
AND WE
J> PAID FOR TB!! While OE and NS are free.

That is your choice if you are willing to trade 200 questions (and
answers), for crashes, lockups and viruses included with those
programs. I paid for TB at about version 1.29 or so and have never
looked back.

J> Can we end this and get a decent product out of the bat! ?

Best E-mail program I have ever used.

J> regardless of comments from "moderators" with credentials.

The Moderators on these list come with very good credentials. They are
helpful, knowledgeable and even-handed. I have not seen anyone get
"Trouted" in several months ;)

Most of the time they are experiencing the same behaviors we are. At
least when you get a message from Allie or Mark, they are using The
Bat!, not so on some lists I have been on, (Eudora for one).

 Your communication is greatly appreciated,
   Paul

The Bat! - bug report

2002-05-01 Thread David Marlow

Hello The Bat! developers,

I'm using The Bat! Version 1.60
  Serial Number
  under Windows 2000 5.0 Build 2195 Service Pack 2
and would like to report a bug

  The bug description:

When in workstation with tcp/ip mode and sharing the names and matters
common folders AbacusBat! a.k.a (The Bat!), will lose folder
information. I believe this is due to each installation of AbacusBat!
overwriting the ACCOUNT.FLX file in the mail directory with its own
version. So when one installation of AbacusBat! creates a new
subfolder, unless it is the last installation to exit that day, that
new folder will not be saved into the list.

  Steps to reproduce the bug:

  David Marlow

W32.Nimda.enc virus causing problem in TheBat! 1.53d

2002-05-01 Thread Mark Knipfer

A colleague of mine uses TheBat! 1.53d. He started to receive the
Nimda.enc virus today. Each time a message arrives with the Nimda.enc
virus, TheBat! 1.53d creates a bat###.TMP file in the Windows TEMP
directory in Windows 2000, Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition 7.5x detects
the virus, and he has to exit TheBat! to get it to work again.

The Nimda.enc virus get launched through an IFRAME SRC tag in an HTML
message.

Why is the TheBat! 1.53d get affected by the Nimda.enc virus?

It doesn't. Your message would come through with a tick on the
envelope in the message list and an attachment showing a valid (or an
invalid) signature in the attachment panel.

You do need a certificate in your IE certificates repository to
perform signing. The certificate has to have been issued for your
email address and has to have been enabled for all purposes,
(especially email signing) on the "advanced" properties button in the
"Internet Options | Content | Certificates | Personal" tab.

Anyone else here think of anything I'm missing in this conversation or
am I the only one left reading this thread now?

Well, your messages are PGP signed to perfection! So that side of your

Once some of us are getting valid signatures on Lynna's messages, I
think everyone would agree that the signatures are indeed valid. An
invalid report indicates something being wrong. It could be that
there's something wrong with the S/MIME setup or that there's
something wrong with the message itself, in that it has been altered
somehow.

The only requirements that I see for validating her signatures is that
you have a working certificate database in the address book (those two
red address book groups containing the root and intermediate root
ca's.) You seem to need to have a valid key for yourself. Do your
S/MIME signed messages come up as valid?

I didn't do anything fancy for the internal implementation to work
except importing new valid keys for myself that I obtained from
Thawte. To get the MS CryptAPI implementation to correctly work, I
imported my S/MIME certificates into the system repository via the
Internet Options.

Now all the s/mime-signed messages are readable with the internal

Not that it matters.. But when I installed 1.60h over 1.60g those

I'm not saying it's the correct way. I don't think anyone has said

We've already stated that it's a work-around until Ritlabs fixes
things so the user whichever of the two methods s/he likes. The

since the internal implementation seems to be broken in the current

MDP> That sounds like a non-imported certificate.

Nope :-)
1.) You don't have to have someones certificate imported for verifying
mails from him/her if he/she is signing with S/MIME. All you need
are Root certificates for the verification chain of
certificate-signings being complete.
2.) This special message I've only seen if a message is signed using
Microsoft Crypto API and I try to verify it w/ internal
implementation. As Max sometimes stated there's a fundamental
difference between both implementations that causes this 'Error'
and makes it in the current state 'unsolvable'. You have to verify
'Crypto API signed' messages using 'Crypto API implementation'
too. vice versa is OK (as I've just tested with an old, singed w/
internal method, message in TBBETA).

Sorry for contradicting, but with all this S/MIME questions I've seen
over the last months only on German and English TB!-lists plus the few
on German newsgroup, clarifying every single point of misunderstanding
(or possible misunderstanding at readers side) seems to be necessary
to avoid further confusions :-)

If I understood your argumentation and Ricardos question correctly
you're talking about two pair of shoes ...
You seem to have written about 'RFC-822 message headers' shown
'inline' the message window (++K), while he requested
about the message headers you can selective show directly above the
message itself (++H).

And the mystery is: if you're working in 'Preview mode' only and
receive a HTML-message (or 'an HTML-message' because of
'_e_itch-tee-em-el'?) you can switch over to view HTML-part and the
header _pane_ is still visible. If you have a look at the very same
message in folder view and you turn over to view HTML-part the _pane_
disappears.

It doesn't matter for me, so please ... this is no request :-) But to
me there seem not to be any effort needed by the programmers to 'not
deactivate' the pane, as already done in preview pane :-)

Switch to MS Crypto and *then* import the certificate. That may make a
difference. Remember to move off the message and back on again to
re-verify.

That sounds like a non-imported certificate. I think the magic formula
is: Use CryptoAPI; Import certificates with CryptoAPI;

You also have to make sure that the CA is in your certificate store.

Okay Allie - please explain to me how to set up my TB! 1.60c
"correctly" to show Lynna's signatures as "valid".

I get "invalid" on her signatures whether I'm using TB!'s internal
S/MIME or MS CryptoAPI.

Here's another peculiar thing...

If I'm in TB! internal S/MIME, and try [again] to "import" her
certificate, it tells me that I already have it imported (obviously,
as I imported it long ago).

However - if I switch over to MS CryptoAPI, and try to import her
certificate, I get an error (one of two)...

1) If I just right-click and choose "import key or certificate", I
get a little TB! "error box" saying simply "Abstract Error".

2) If I right-click and choose "open", the first box that opens up
says "no signed attributes". If I look further into the details,
it does tell me that a) the certificate *is* imported, and b) the
*certificate* is "valid" (of course, this says nothing about the
   signed messages).

Any more ideas?

1). Because the headers immediately precede the text and the text will
flow on from them. It's a simple issue of changing the starting point
of what is displayed. The HTML version is an attachment. The headers
are nowhere near it and there would be much more programming effort
involved in bleeding in the headers there.

2). The headers have no HTML tags - particularly no ...
encapsulation.

These are just sympathetic excuses, sure, but they seem logical to me.

I'm using 1.60c. All of Lynna's S/MIME signed messages show here as

It's not very high on my wish list. It's useful when exchanging a
filter during bug-hunting, but if you really want to back-up your
filters all you need to do is to copy the account.srx file in the
directory where your account is stored.
No use to bother Ritlabs.

Use a text file. To copy filters from the sorting office has to be
done one at a time. Paste them into notepad (or whatever) after you're
done select all filters in notepad, copy them and paste them all at
the same time back into the sorting office.
Keep incoming, outgoing, read and replied filters separated though.

This is most interesting. I don't have my certs installed under the
Windows registry. They are only imported into TB!. This puts them into
a single location I can back up and not worry about when I restore the

This may be semantics, but I'm getting concerned that we are heading
to a road where the CryptoAPI becomes the "correct" way. IMNSHO, this
is merely a work-around until Ritlabs gets the problem fixed.

I settled on TB! because it has an independently produced encryption
system. I would be most annoyed if there was a switch to using
Microsoft's.

headers in html mails

2002-05-01 Thread Ricardo M. Reyes

when I open and html mail in a separate window (instead of the
preview pane) I get a tabbed window, with a tab labeled "1" and a tab
labeled "message.htm". In the text tab "1" I see the headers in the
gray area above the text (From, To, Subject, etc) but in the
"message.htm" tab I can't see them. The text of the mail fills all the
window.

If I read the mail in the preview mail, I can see the headers in both
tabs.

Do you know how can I see the headers in the html mails in a separate
window?

I've just tried this and got an "abstract error" message. Searching
Help tells me that I can only import certificates if I'm using the
internal implementation. If I switch to the internal implementation, I
can download the certificate, but the signature still appears as
invalid.

AFAICT, S/MIME is completely broken in my installation of TB! because
all signatures appear as invalid no matter which implementation I use.
This includes signatures that appeared as valid in TB! 1.53d

Interesting problem with separated MIME email

2002-05-01 Thread Mike Smith

I'm a moderator on a couple of other lists (LYRIS based) and the
moderation mail comes in with separated MIME, which makes it display
the contents as 2 attachments. Is there a way of making TheBat display
these messages in 'raw' form, rather than attachments? If not, is
there a way of making regex replacements search the entire raw
message? Currently, it only searches the pseudo-attachment that you
have opened. I'm looking for a way of making accept/reject a little
more automated, by using reply template for accept, forward template
for reject.

Re[2]: All this effort for what?? Batted-out!!

2002-05-01 Thread Michael T. Ashby

Julius,

I know how you feel about the mailing list. I too kinda felt that way
when I first signed up, but I don't think it's as bad as you may
think.

The Bat! is EXTREMELY powerful and allows for a LOT of tweaks and
edits to customize almost every nuance to your personal preferences. I
joined this list because I was thinking it would help me learn about
the product faster, but if anything I found that most of the posts
here are WAY over my head. :)

Most of the threads here are not the typical fare that the average
user would address. The average user isn't going to know, much less
care, about the merit so PGP vs. sMime. So, take most of the posts
with a grain of salt, because many posts here are dealing with beta,
or just released versions and features that most users are not going
to use.

Personally, I've found TB to be extremely reliable and it does
everything I need. Additionally, as I poke around the program I
continually find more and more features that just blow my socks off.
For example, I just figured out how to use "Quick Templates" and like
a kid in a candy store! :P

So, although you may see a lot of "issues" addressed here, don't take
them to heart. You're looking at posts that have a high "geek"
quotient and are far above the average e-mail fare. In my book, there
is no more secure and reliable e-mail client out there.

Hello Christopher,

You can set up BAT! to do POP authentication automatically before
retrieving email.

Go to Account->Property->Transport, you will notice a Authentication
button next to the SMTP server setting. Click on it, and click both Perform
SMTP authentication and Use POP before SMTP Authentication.

That should work.

TB. AND WE
Julius> PAID FOR TB!! While OE and NS are free.

For some OE is easier because it requires little or no setup from the user
perspective besides setting up the e-mail and news accounts. You may play
around with some settings to enhance it a bit but from from a poweruser's view
comparing OE to The_Bat! is like comparing Wordpad with MSWord. Granted OE
can perform it's job, simplistically speaking, but contains none of the power
of The_Bat!

Julius> Let's make this work!! Ideas??

It does work if you allow yourself to take some time and experiment with
it, play around with the more powerful features and get it set to run the
way you wish. I have been a The_Bat! registered user for over two years. I
have found it extremely powerful, totally configurable and, yes, it does
have it's problems but I would invite you to subscribe to either
msnews.microsoft.com and select the Outlook and Outlook Express newsgroups
to give yourself an idea of what problems are encountered with those
products. Further, I would HIGHLY suggest you subscribe to the
Microsoft_Alerts at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and see for yourself exactly
how many holes and unsecure Outlook Express is. Bugs found about 3 times a
week and some of them system critical.

In closing no software is perfect. I have yet to use any poweruser
application, under any OS, that does not have a learning curve nor
problems. Hell, I can't even find one OS that I have used, from DOS, to
Unix, to Linux, through all versions of Win16 or Win32 platforms.

Anyway ... I have rambled on long enough and please understand this is MY
opinion only and, as "Opinions are like assholes. Everybody has one." holds
true, in every discussion, MY opinion remains just that. My opinion.

Yuck. I don't really want to downgrade to 'c', because then I'm
stuck with the menu navigator button on the title bar, which I'm
s happy to finally be rid of.

I have no idea how to set the S/MIME setting to MS CryptoAPI. I
simply have enable S/MIME checked in Account Properties/Options. Will
unchecking it make this problem go away?

Best,

Yuki

Remember, this is the same company that touted .NET as a secure way
for them to store all your data on their servers, so they could dish
it out to businesses on request. Yet, if you have a .NET passport,
and you sign in to it, the first thing it does is warn you that the
information (your .NET user ID and password) you are about to send is
going out over an insecure Internet (accept Yes or No, but there is
no alternative to Yes if you want to sign in). Who is missing
something here, them or me? :) I am so glad "hailstorm" has fizzled
into a drizzle.

Best,

Yuki

When I switched to the "INTERNAL" setting I could not view
the text on this email. It was a blank white page. I could
see the icon in the list of messages showing that this was
SMIME signed email but when I opened the emial I didnt see
the SMIME certificate or any text it was just WHITE.

I was able to click on the other emails, and view those
which were not signed. Though it seemed a bit "sticky".
I would agree that it is the "internal" SMIME function that
is broke in this version of TB! To use SMIME in version "h"
one needs to use the Microsoft CryptoAPI setting.
