[SOT] The best filter for SPAM
Hello all, Like many people, I receive hundreds of e-mail daily with a good percentage of spam. Up to now I have been using a combination of TB filters plus, at server level with Mercury/32, RBLs, my own Killfile and local BL, Compliance Control (checking for messages without subject or date headers, etc.) plus Content Control (content testing rules giving a weight). But even with all of these I still got a number of false positives and undetected spam. A couple of weeks ago someone mentioned POPFile in this list and I decided to give it try. I installed it, trained it for a couple of days and it has been running for some 10 days with 99% accuracy, detecting spam (in different languages, BTW) that had gone undetected by the sum of the other schemes and with hardly any false positives. Miguel, I use the Selective Download filter feature in TB and it works well. It's also quick and easy to further edit the 'strings' it classes as spam. Newbie Q: text attachment visibility
Hello listmembers! First I would like to introduce myself briefly. My Name is Uwe Zimmermann, I come originally from Germany but chose to go to Sweden to become a PhD student in Stockholm, five years ago. Privately I have become involved in the software support of an image database program which I discovered (after long time searching). I have converted to Heat! only a few days ago and I am quite sure that I finally have found my future email client after about a year's trial-and-error. I was driven to look for a new email client by the introduction of Opera's new M2 mail engine which I find everything but useful. Originally I was using (and still am for my main email account) Netscape, but when I started as a freelancer in email support for a small company, I needed a program which could handle a) multiple accounts separately b) would offer backup features Opera has never (in spite of advertising) been able to import my main email account from Netscape, so it stayed where it was, but everything else I managed from Opera - until last week. Therefore I searched the Web for alternatives, I had already tested some of them like Eudora (at work), Pegasus, but this time I found PMMail and TheBat! After about one hour of testing everything was clear and here I am... I like about everything about the program and whenever somebody asks, I will recommend it. Now I come to my questions, I hope somebody has made it through the blurb above and is still reading this. In the support emails I often get attached plain-text documents to the email. These normally have the extension .log, but may also come as .txt. I wonder if there is any possibility to make TheBat! display these attachments - it's all plain ASCII text - much like it now displays attached image files in a tabbed separate window. If not, is there any possibility somewhere in TheBat! to set, which program is used to handle which type of attachment? On my system TheBat! does not open any external viewer when I try to double click on attached .log files, instead I first get the warning that these files can contain viruses (it's pure ASCII and a non-macro text editor is associated with the files in Windows) and when I insist on opening the file I get the error message that the application for these files was not found... Re: [SOT] The best filter for SPAM
Hello Charles, I use the Selective Download filter feature in TB and it works well. As no system is perfect, I can't (don't want) take the risk of deleting false positives that may be legitimate e-mail. I will always just send spam (possible spam) to an specific folder which, sooner or later, I will review for possible false positives. Anyway, what criteria would I use for deleting messages? Those messages flagged as spam by my own server? No, no matter how much I tweak them there are false positives every now and then and, anyhow, I've said that POFile beats them all. At least that is my experience. -- Best regards, Miguel A. This works nicely in Windows Explorer, the LOG file shows the corresponding icon and if WinEDT is running, the file is opened within the running instance of the program, when WinEDT is not running, the program is launched and the LOG file displayed. However in TheBat! I get the Windows flag as icon for LOG files and the above mentioned error message persists. Re: [SOT] The best filter for SPAM
In reply to Miguel's message '[SOT] The best filter for SPAM' on Sun, 15 Dec 2002 11:41:16 +0100 from [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Miguel, (got ya name right this time ;-) MAU A couple of weeks ago someone mentioned POPFile in this list and I MAU decided to give it try. I installed it, trained it for a couple of MAU days and it has been running for some 10 days with 99% accuracy, MAU detecting spam (in different languages, BTW) that had gone MAU undetected by the sum of the other schemes and with hardly any MAU false positives. It's a beauty. Since your original post, I also have finally given PopFile a go - I have been meaning to for quite sometime, and thought today was too hot outside to do much else, so it seemed the perfect day to finally try it out. I must say, I too am impressed with the accuracy i seem to be achieving even after only a few hours of training, and 100 odd emails. Of course, as you would expect, not one email I have received since running PopFile has been spam... But I do wonder if I have chosen the most appropriate way to set up my buckets. As the majority of my mail is sorted based on the sender, I really only have two real buckets, 'legit_email' and 'spam'. It seemed to me that only two buckets might not provide enough statistical data, so I also decided to create a bucket for each mailing list. bringing my total to 5 buckets. It seems rather stupid to make a bucket for each sender, as the bat filters take care of that, and work/personal is already taken care of just based on the sender as well. So my real question, after all this, is what have you found to be the most appropriate bucket setup? Should I artificially create more buckets, or leave it at the minimum.. or am i missing the point entirely? or. Also, am I just lucky, or over the last, say, month or so, has spam really slowed down. The last spam i received through my main account must have been early last week, and I haven't received any spam in either of my hotmail accounts for weeks either... Just lucky, or are other people noticing a similar occurrence... cheers! -- dan. e [EMAIL PROTECTED] w http://www.danhirning.com Current version is 1.62 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re: [SOT] The best filter for SPAM
Hello Daniel, snipped a bit So my real question, after all this, is what have you found to be the most appropriate bucket setup? Should I artificially create more buckets, or leave it at the minimum.. or am i missing the point entirely? or. I don't really know what *is* better, but I'll tell you what I did. For some three days I had 4 buckets and the overall accuracy didn't go much higher than 80%. Then I thought that the more buckets the longer the training period would probably need to be and, what the heck!, I'm only really interested in classifying spam from no-spam. So, as actually two of the buckets were sub-sets of a third one, I deleted the to sub-set ones and reset statistics and, after one more day, accuracy was over 90%. Aside of that I see no sense in using a Bayesian text classifier (that is what POFile actually is) to tell me if a message is coming from John Doe or from TBUDL list, both are legitimate mail and that kind of sorting is better and more easily done by TB's *Sorting* Office. Also, am I just lucky, or over the last, say, month or so, has spam really slowed down. The last spam i received through my main account must have been early last week, and I haven't received any spam in either of my hotmail accounts for weeks either... Just lucky, or are other people noticing a similar occurrence... I wouldn't know. I'm using 114, 110 is MAU used by Mercury and 112 by MailTraq. yup, that sounds like a winner!! I don't have Mailtraq, but, never mind, I don't want to get started! -- Paul Using The Bat! v1.62 Christmas Edition on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 1 Current version is 1.62 | Using TBUDL information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
problem: Quicksearch and spamcop filter
Hi, Every time I try to forward spam to Spamcop with a manual filter (**which is also listed on the FAQ page**) using the command CTRL+ALT+S the quick search bar pops up. I don't know why this is happening. I've looked at the hot keys (shortcuts) and it isn't listed as belonging to the quick search bar. It isn't listed at all belonging to anything so that shouldn't be a problem. I also tried using CTRL+ALT+N to forward spam, but that doesn't matter.. The quick search bar keeps popping up. The filter works fine but the side affect is pretty annoying. It used to work fine in the past with version 1.61. Does anyone have a explanation/solution for this annoyance?
