Do you also get the pop-up window each time the virus is identified and
quarantined? I have the AVG plug-in too, but am using v1.62r and the
free edition of AVG. Can you disable this in other versions?

Thanks for the tip - didn't notice the right-click option before.
Unfortunately, the option is system-wide and not TB-specific. What that
means is that if I set up the memo window to reside in the right side of
the preview screen (a logical place for it), as soon as I click on the
message the memo window loses focus and disappears!!

That doesn't make sense.

Are there are any plans to allow the memo window to be docked? That
would solve these issues. If the memo window could be docked on the
preview window screen, then the ability to change the subject line would
almost become a moot point.

Neither of those posts address the issue I was bringing up. That issue
was/is:

Are we talking about taking the time (an extra step) to put an
exclamation at the beginning of every memo, just so that the column
width can be set to 7?

My point was that you can set the column width to 7 and still see
*something* (an indicator that the message has a memo). Of course, if
you want to see the entire first letter of the first word in the memo,
you may have to push the column width to 11 or 12.

So my question is this: Are people really taking that extra step to
insert ! before each memo so that they can save screen real estate?

I thought that the point was to have a memo presence indicator. By
skipping the step of inserting that ! and just typing the memo, you can
still have an indicator.

And still set the column width to 7.

Again am I missing something? Is this part of an organization
system? I'm curious.

If it's just a preference thing - OK, I'll shut up. But I was asking if
the exclamation point was part of something else (special filter, search
criteria, etc.) I'm having a hard time wrapping my brain around the idea
as it has been explained so far.

However, if you export it in a Unix mailbox format you do keep the
original received date/time.

The following filter exports a highlighted message, opens it in my
favourite editor (ultraedit) and when the editor is closed, reimports
it into the inbox of the original account. The hotkey Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E
triggers the filter.

It requires a batch file (also listed below) to work.

Modify this by putting in the path to your editor in the batch file,
replacing "d:\batch\editmsg.bat" with the path to your batch file
and replacing the word "personal" in the filter line

So do I, but that's not what happens in the circumstances we've been
discussing, & I think that's the issue for Ken too. Usually, when you
exit a folder & then go back into it, the focus remains on the last
message viewed. But if you change the view (ie go to view unread only) &
then return, the focus goes to the top message in the message-list. The
same happens when you purge all folders - the focus is re-set, for every
folder, to the top message in the list.

I'm confused. Are you saying that you start each memo with "!" to save
space - as opposed to just starting the memo? Wouldn't any memo have a
regular character in it, so that you could easily see what messages have
a memo or not if the column was one character width.

I thought that Selective Download did not allow "special syntax" (this
is the help file wording). I can use pipe characters in selective
download?!?! Wow.

Also (to Joseph N.) - I am currently dealing with the same virus e-mails
you are filtering for. Problem is, every time I think I got a domain
and/or subject line variation in my spamkill text file, another variant
shows up.

This would be simple if I could use a regular filter in Selective
Download: these are all coming to only one of my accounts. A simple to
not download a message with attachment would work in this case.

But the AVG plug-in keeps me from using a regular filter for this. I
realize that's a good thing - AVG is jumping in first and finding the
virus. But it's getting annoying getting the virus warning message 5-6
times a day. Actually, as I've been updating my kill file, that number
is growing smaller.

I'm just looking for an easy way to do this with less work.

Joseph, would mind sending me your filters/kill file that you're using
for the MS Network Security Update messages? I can send you what I have
if you want - maybe together we can get all variations.

This seems like one of those issues that development either decides one
way or another arbitrarily, or provides the functionality for the user
to choose in Preferences.

Unfortunately, the latter very often requires a lot more time and effort
than end users can imagine

Right. That's one of the reasons I like date asc order (new at bottom)

You've got it. You select the contact in (one of) the group(s) he's
present. Then you pick the contact's properties and select all groups
you want him listed.

SMS> Also, if a contact's Email address changes, can I modify it in

That's the advantage of having your contacts in one address book.
Changing a property (name, e-mail address, private number) will have
effect in all groups. Of course this supposes that you've got each
contact only once in your AB. (If not you're going to get bad effects
when you're using AB-templates for such an address.)
When you're using multiple address books, you'll need to change the
properties in each AB to keep everything up to date.

SMS> So, so, so much to learn.

Ask and you will be answered. ;-)

Not at home so TheBat! isn't right in front of me, but I believe what you
want is the outbox equivelant of 'parking' a message. It should be one of the
buttons right next to the send button in the message editing window. With
this option, no matter how hard you try the mail goes nowhere until
you 'unpark' it.

Use "Confirm immediate sending" in account properties. You click Send

Yes, but if you don't see them in the root, how can you modify their groups? For
example, let's say I have a contact, I assign it to a group. THen, later, I make
another group to which I also want to assign the contact. Since the contact isn't in
the root, how can I do this? Can I modify the properties from within the first group
to which the contact was assigned? Also, if a contact's Email address changes, can I
modify it in one place and have it take effect for all groups to which that contact is
assigned? So, so, so much to learn.

Again, thanks for your help.

Suppose you've got 2000 entries in your AB. That would make a mighty

Especially now that you've seen that maintaining multiple AB's can be

Perhaps the capability to modify the X-Mailer header should be added.
Its unfortunate that some poorly implemented spam software has
erroneously categorized The Bat! I can understand how RIT is proud of
their product and would prefer to have it announced in the header, but
knowing that email can be blocked because of it certainly can't help
sales. The Bat! is powerful enough to do many things, having to run a

unnecessary burden on the user.

Hi all,

Well, I've taken the plunge and am now using TB for work. Consequencially, I have
multiple addressbooks consisting of personal contacts, vendors, co-workers, etc...
Recently, I established a new group intending to add members from multiple
addressbooks. As the new group was in my co-workers book, adding co-workers was very
easy -- properties of each contact, select group and check my new group. When I tried
this with contacts in the other addressbooks, however, my new group didn't appear on
the list of possible groups from which I could select. I then consulted the trusty
help file, however, the only suggestion I could find was to hold ctrl anddrag/drop
contacts into my new group. Problem is that I'm not using a mouse, so am unable to
drag/drop from the keyboard. Any ideas how I might get these other contacts into my
group?

On a slightly different note, why would anyone want to hide members of a group -- I
mean, why wouldn't you want the contact to appear outside a group in its original
location?

I also tried using the SETHEADER/ADDHEADER macros in TB since I used

They only seem to work on headers that have the 'Editor' = 'Yes' option

Right. Which begs my main question:

How do I tell if a folder has templates set for it rather than
defaulting to the account-level templates?

Hello Dave,

There is no direct and easy way to tell, specially if the templates are
similar and I think TB should somehow indicate this in the folder
Properties.

Contrary to the recommendations some TBUDL members, because of the risks
involved in using them, I do use folder templates quite a bit and what I
have done is to include some "redundant and transparent" information in
my default account templates. In some accounts, like in the one I'm
using now, I have used the %ACCOUNT macro with the account name (i.e.
%ACCOUNT="MAU", which is not at all needed). This tells me it is a
default template even though I may see it when looking at some folder
Properties.

I have also used this in some other accounts:
%BCC="This is a Default template"%BCC=""
But you can use other macros like COMMENT:
%COMMENT="This is default"%COMMENT=""

thebat.exe 100% CPU usage ... please help!

2003-09-23 Thread David Boggon

thebat.exe has been using close to 100% CPU for a few days now.

I have no idea how to go about remedying this. Have tried going to
v2.00.6 from v2.00 and there has been no change.

This is also on the back of one of my accounts suddenly refusing to
create messages a few days ago (the command causing the bat to hang and 100% CPU
usage). The account issue has been resolved by starting the account
from scratch.

I would be grateful for advice. v2.00 was behaving just fine for a few
weeks, then this.

Should I try re-installing?

... or go back to v1.62?

I have about given up. I cannot make Xray take out the

Of these, you will only be able to get rid of 'Inbox - Known'. Before
removing it though, you'll need to change the '' filter to send
mails matching it to the regular Inbox. Then you can delete 'Inbox -
Known' and it will stay away too.

That's because when you don't define folder templates, you still see
them, but they're identical to your account templates. They stay the
same with every change of your account templates until you edit the
folder template.

No, you're not. I also sort by date/time of creation, & have the newest
emails at the bottom. After purging folders, the focus is placed on the
topmost email too. As you say, it's not a big deal to press End, though
it's more of a big deal if you have 40 new messages in the folder and
have to press End & then page-up to get to the earliest new message,
iyswim. Though in putting this into words, it has (finally) occurred to
me that I could use Ctrl-Alt-Right

Folder templates vs. AB templates

2003-09-23 Thread Dave Kennedy
How do I tell if a folder has templates set for it rather than
defaulting to the account-level templates?

Details... In cleaning up my TBUDL & TBOT templates, I was
checking the folder templates for each. Before I learned about AB
templates, I had set up folder templates for TBUDL, so I expected
to find something there and did.

What surprised me is I couldn't tell the difference between the
folder templates for the rest of my folders, including TBOT, and
the account-level templates.

I'm pretty sure, that I always thread by Alt-1 method. But this thread

But I did not verify if it was in Alt-1 state before.

I've been always most comfortable with newest message on top and I
prefer to sort on the creation date. Not on the time TB received the
message.
But then I also prefer to keep messages threaded (if possible by
references) in all folders and that means that new answers to old
threads don't look like they're very sorted. ;-)

I also have the messages sorted ascending and the only thing that I
noticed was that if you read a mail, close the folder and open the
folder later (and in the meantime messages were placed into the
folder), the mail highlighted is not the bottom one (newest) but the
one you read last. I would like that to be the last mail (newest).

Any one know how to do that?

That's funny... I finally decided that TB likes OLDEST mssgs at the top! When in

new mail at top/bottom

2003-09-23 Thread ken green
I'm curious how other TB users approach this. I currently have all my
folders that receive mail sorted by date ascending (that is, newest
message at the bottom).

I have gone back and forth over the years, and sometimes used ascending
just for mailing lists and such and descending for "regular" Inboxes.

The reason I'm bringing this up is that TheBat! (v1.62r) seems to
"prefer" new messages at the top. I know one or the other probably had
to be decided on - I'm just curious what other TB users are doing.

I claim TB prefers descending (new mail at the top), because after
clearing a Quick Filter (Alt + select: name, subject, etc.) by pressing
Ctrl+=, the focus returns to the top of the list. Not a huge deal, but
if that's your oldest message, there is an extra step to scroll down to
the bottom.

This is pretty minor - I can press the End key and quickly move to the
bottom of the list. But I was wondering if this behavior bothered anyone
else, or caused someone switch their sorting method. Heck, maybe I'm
the only one who sorts with newest at the bottom!
