I did some experimenting, and neither can I.  The only thing I have
noticed in the pattern is that all of the originating e-mails come from
Hotmail.  I guess perhaps they use some pattern to trigger something,
but I can't figure out what it is.  I even tried sending some mails from
a Hotmail account and couldn't duplicate it.

That works OK, but will still remove spaces if you edit a paragraph so
that a  combination moves from one line to
another.  For example, if I start inserting text at the beginning of:

Sentence one.  Sentence two.

When "one." wraps to a second line the second space will be gone.

Auto-format also has some unexpected side-effects.  Try editing a
Quick Template or a SmartBat pad with auto-format on.  Fortunately,
Ctrl+Z will put things right.

I find I have the same problem. It worked fine with 2.11.02 but now,
with 2.12, other groups see my address and I can see theirs. Also,
I have created some templates for use with certain people in my
address book. If someone in another group starts a new message to
someone who happens to be in my address book, their new message starts
with the template I set up!

This is a serious enough problem to perhaps send me back to 2.11.02.

Is there someway to avoid all this??

Agreed. One of the hosts I use has Spam Assassin in place which catches an
incredible amount of spam. I didn't even realize how much until I logged on to
cpanel and checked it out.

I also get very little spam on this myrealbox account which is managed by
Novell, so they are obviously doing something on the back-end as well. Hotmail
has gotten a lot better also. Yahoo, IMO, is far and away the worst in the spam
filtering department.

Fighting spam at the email-client is a losing battle.

Yeah, I that's the reason for my messed up quotes and 20 is sensible! I had
lowered the number because I was tired of TB thinking that ">" was a quote when
it wasn't and forgot about other quote-related side affects (this one as well as
wrapping issues). My main problem was when I wanted to have an arrow "->" at the
beginning of the line. Anyone have a suggestion for a TB-friendly arrow?

If you already have Power Pro installed, you could do it the way you
mentioned in your other message. For those without, a simple batch
file would suffice, which you have a shortcut to on your desktop of
whatever.

err. Maybe a program similar to pskill.exe from SysInternals, but
look for a process name rather than its PID.

Then that line could be the third line in the batch file, so that when

AB, but if they aren't in my AB and it isn't from a list, 99.9% should
be spam, right? of course, every time you sign up for something NEW, tht
email will come and be classified as spam, how do you account for those?

Then, to stay in line with your subject, I suspect it's just you. I've

Note that I let TB do the counting, I didn't count the messages
myself.

Anyhow, if you still think the total is one off, I'd suggest that you
delete the messages.tbb and .tbi files for that folder. (While TB is
closed down.) And wait till the numbers are high enough. There might
be a teeny little bit of corruption in your junk folder. (Not
surprising though, considering the contents.)

Because I supposed it was a folder that received 'a message everyday'
(as in one msg a day) and that was mostly because you complained about
1 msg too many

  I'm not smart enough to do it that way.

  First thing is to filter out all msgs that are not addressed to
  you. That will take care of the majority of the msgs.

  Then I set all my filters for those subjects whom/that
  I know, i.e. mail lists, etc.

  Then I set all my filters for entries in my ABs.

  Finally, I flag those msgs which don't fall into any of those
  categories. Eventually a pattern emerges & I filter for that as
  well.

  I rarely, if ever, filter on content for the reasons that you
  cite.

  I really haven't changed my filters for months but just started
  to fool around again. I will tell you that between 175-300
  pieces of email end up in my junk folder daily. And only rarely
  do I get a false/positive. And almost *never* do I find a piece
  of junk mail in my inbox.

  This was not my experience with Bayesit filtration & I subjected
  my filters to thousands of pieces of spam.

  I'm happy to amplify or help if you need further help.

As soon as I sent this message, something dropped and I realised the
power of PowerPro. When I open TB! with PowerPro, I also trigger it to
open the 3rd party software required! It works perfectly! :-)

Running 3rd Party Software with TB!

Hello users,

I'm just wondering if this it at all possible?

When I open TB!, can I also trigger a 3rd party program to run at the
same time (maybe via a script or something)?

For example, I would only like to run a proxy anti-spam program when I
open TB!

What would be even better, is being able to close a program at the same
time as TB!, or am I just asking too much now!? ;-)

Autoformat leaves those extra spaces after periods.

Hi all,

Just for those who wish to preserve those extra spaces after periods.

Though Alt-L will remove them when reflowing text, Autoformat will
not. Toggle on auto-format and try it, i.e., CTRL+Shift+F.

The thing with autoformat is that it will reflow to perfection any
text that isn't completely separated by an extra line. As a result you
can't
 do this
with autoformat
   enabled. :) When I need to do that I toggle
   it off.

Yes. I have my pdsf2.msl file here and it doesn't create problems with
functionality.

CTRL-Shift-Alt-T is for TB! to reread the .msl files if they've been

I just wanted to thank you for the instructions you posted concerning

I've elected to change the subject of my reply to you because none of
what I'm discussing has anything to do with upgrading from v1.6 to v2.

We're now discussing when to change the subject for a message in an
ongoing thread as well as the circumstances surrounding this change of
subject.

The same goes for your message (the one I'm now replying to) since it

My general rule is to ask myself when replying to a message in a
thread, "Is this message related to the topic being discussed? Does it
contribute to the original query?"

Let's look at the time you originally chose to change the subject.

message you were pretty much on topic. You first mentioned that v2 was
stable for you, a core concern with Douglas' issue on whether or not
he should upgrade. You went on to mention an annoying bug and
mentioning this bug was directly related to answering his qestion
about the problems that currently existed with v2 which in turn would
influence his decision to upgrade or not. IOW's, the essence of your
response revolved around his question. I didn't really see a need to
change the subject.

The public trouting is based on this principle. If a member sees
another member being moderated, they'll take note of what provoked the
moderator's interjection and avoid doing the same.

Take whatever course you like Mary. I mean that in a gentle way. :) If
you prefer a wait and see approach then that's ok. I'm not here to
have you standing and wondering what to do. You changed a subject and
Douglas changed it back. You didn't find it unreasonable to change it
while he did. But don't these disagreements happen all the time? I
can't really prevent this sort of thing from happening since we all
don't think the same.

Your subject change, an attempt to obey list rules isn't worthy of a
:trout:. It's worthy of commendation. Douglas' opinion that you
inappropriately changed the subject is not at all a breach of rules. I
do agree with him in this instance that the subject didn't have to be
changed. He proceeds to change it back. I doubt I'd have done it that
way but you know, we all tend to do some things differently.

have a look at it later. I re-installed PGP and the license screen never
showed itself anymore.

No.  I only clicked on it once and have not seen it since.

Strangely, in my original QT it would wrap around in my message when I
tried  it.  However,  when I copied and pasted your version into my QT

preferences.  But this editor bug is near the top of my list of pet
peeves with TB!.  It falls right after the lack of in-mail and
out-mail filtering.

It's amazing that such a great email program can't handle simple text
reformatting.  At least it should permit seamless switching to and
from an external editor so we can reformat paragraphs.

Suppressing such discussions - such as how that can be done - does not
do Ritlabs any favor.

I used PGP 7.0.3 up until a few days ago and now use 8.0.3. Both free
versions and both worked flawlessly.  If you decide to use 8.0.3 Free
version just un-check all the additional pieces it wants to load
(email plugins, etc.) and load the basic software.  TheBat! already
has built in support for PGP.

You could set it at one single line in the QT, since the text it
generates is so short that it won't come on multiple lines

The meaning of the %- macro is that the end of line character
immediately after the macro will be forgotten by the editor, so this:

Most often this is done to enhance the readability

So the macro you proposed could be written as:

I prefer monospaced font for reading e-mail, and the font of my choice
(Lucida Console) has both the comma and period placed at the left side of
character cell, so even without double spacing, there's a visible gap where
they're used.

And even though I started using computers in the time of DOS text-based word
processors (anybody remembers DisplayWrite?), I never used 2 spaces after a
period, nor have heard of that rule till only a few years ago
(interestingly, it was on a page that dealed with things that the author

That would be good to see how. I made some Selective Download filters,
using most frequently used spamers' patterns, and am getting about 1-3%
of spam after that work. What remains are addresses consisting from

"Proportional font" is the key. Not everyone uses proportional fonts
and that may be the root of contention. Proportional fonts are what
makes a single space at the end of a sentence provide the effect that
two spaces do for fixed width fonts. Even single spaces in
professional typesetting are not of a fixed width. I just looked at
some of my Tex/Latex produced documents and the space after a "." is
greater than the space between words in that line of text. Maybe my
old eyes are just playing a tricks on me.

That's a known issue (read 'bug'), set it 'Check before send/queue'.

Are you per chance counting on a different moment than TB?
Over here it's counting alright.
TB's purging starts when you're closing it down. When you collect a
message everyday in a certain folder, that folder will always have one
message more than TB's setting. (Provided you open TB once everyday.)

I'm not really in favour of typing two spaces after a period. (What's
the difference between a period and a dot?) Just because some schools
in the states taught that, doesn't mean it was general accepted
practice.
Even I am old enough to have learned typing before the computer age. I
was taught to type one space after any kind of punctuation. Maybe
that's Dutch or European. I don't know.
I also was taught to start a new paragraph with four spaces. One of
the other things those poor people tried to hammer in me was that when
writing a letter to the states (I guess that should be capitalized)I
should place the address on the wrong side of the letter.

All of those conventions should not be optional. Just forget about
them, just remember that when they're making one option, they should
implement the others too. You'd get check boxes for one space, after a
period, two spaces, three. One space after a comma, two spaces. And of
of those other conventions.
So please no options. The make the reformatting more prone to bugs and
keep the folks at RitLabs from doing useful work. That's my two cents.

Yes, of course that's what I should've said, but I was called away by
an acquaintance of mine (definitely not a friend) who had severe
computer problems. So I finished my message in a rush.

You were afraid of your filter not functioning correctly. Why? Did it

Apparently  you  have  solved  the  problem.  Note that I had the same
problem,  but  I  believe  in  my  case it was due to a combination of
Norton  Antivirus and Zone Alarm Pro version 5. Currently, I'm testing
the  system  with  Zone  Alarm  4.5 and so far I have not had a repeat
instance of the problem.

Actually, I got it worked out before I saw your message. I moved the
images to images/rogues and it works fine. However, I didn't get rid
of the pdsf2.msl file. Nor did I have to hit Ctrl-Shift-Alt-T. As soon
as I moved the images to the rogues folder, it started working
perfectly.

Some people differ on those conclusions.  While I'm all in favor 
of attractive type, the two-spaces-after-a-period approach has

To do that I would have to alter the transport section of each and
every account and since a popular wish has yet to be granted I cannot
do it in one move! So I am reluctant - and time starved - to do that.

I didn't realise one could simply install older versions over newer.
Have done that and all is back to normal.

I also didn't get any information in the bottom half of the connection
window pane when I sent a message using 2.12.00 and in fact two
messages I sent to this group were bounced back!

Now all is checking fine and sending fine in 2.11.02.

You're mentioning that you want to delete messages belonging to a
certain colour group.

But at the advanced tab you've also checked that the sender and all
recipients should be part of your AB. Is this intentional?

  Options -> Preferences -> General -> 'Start program after system halt'

I'm seeing none of the problems you're describing, while I'm using the

I have 38 email accounts that get checked regularly.

2.12.00 fails and freezes with no way out but to kill the process
using CTRL-ALT-DELETE.

Have just gone back to 2.11.02 and all is well again.

I use POPfile which means the fetch is proxied - whether that has
anything to do with it I don't know.

regard to those threads I do choose to post to, is not to change them,
and to wait for Allie to come on in his Mod hat and tell me when to
change them.

2.12.00 freezes on collect and can't quit

Upgraded to 2.12.0

Now connection window loads all the tasks but nothing is collected.

Just hangs.

Abort all tasks clears the window but then accounts can't be asked to
collect individually - they don't appear in the connection window.

Also: (connected?)

CTRL-ALT-DEL does not show The Bat as a running application. Even when
it starts up fresh.

I can't get Roguemoticons to work

Hello all!

As of late last night, I am using TB! v2.12. I have just downloaded
the Roguemoticon file (rogues.zip) but have been unable to get it to
work.

I unzipped it and placed the files (including the pdsf2.msl &
rogues.msl files) in /The Bat!/images. This is just a guess on my part
since I couldn't find any instructions anywhere on where to put these
files.

When I open a message with the X-Rogue header (specifically, a message
from Roelof Otten) I don't see his picture.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TB! 2.12.00 : Default addressbook problem

Greetings TBUDLers,

I have TB! set up with two Account Groups, one for me, one for my wife, with separate 
shortcuts to the two groups using the command-line parameter /FOCUSU=, and in both 
Groups' Account Properties the default addressbook is set to .

Under 2.11.02 (and before), I see just my folders and just my addressbook, and my wife 
sees just her folders and just her addressbook, plus there are some common folders we 
both see.

I just tried the upgrade to 2.12.00 and can't get this behaviour. The folder view 
works as before, but if I open my addressbook in my Group, it shows up also in my 
wife's group, and vice versa. Switched back to 2.11.2 and everything works as before.

Can anyone reproduce this and tell me whether
1. It's a new feature (unwelcome here!)
2. Something's broken
3. I need to do something different.

I realize this, empathize and appreciate the efforts you're making at
cooperating.

However, there's no precise measure of the adequacy of a subject. I
can only provide basic guidelines which I have. See my response to
Maggie's 'trout not accepted' message. Another problem is that with
every basic guideline there can be valid exceptions.

"Time to upgrade?" ... this subject seems to be about the asking of a
question of whether or not it's time to upgrade TB!. This is what
Douglas discussed. There's nothing really to break down or specify in
the subject especially since he really didn't have anything specific
to discuss on the matter. So it can stand by itself and be adequate.

We know that such a thread will likely involve brief mention or
explanations of new features.

Of course, if a sub-thread begins focusing on a particular issue, then
fine, change the subject, but our threshholds tend to be different. I
don't usually change the subject until the 2nd message that is
focusing on a new subject. If I abruptly change the topic, then I
start a new thread.

IOW's exercise judgement.

Now, things may not go smoothly because of a variety of reasons. We
are all different, with different opinions, temperaments and
thresh-holds etc. I plan to moderate only those subjects that IMO,
fall significantly short of adequately reflecting what the discussion
is about.

Douglas seems sensitive about subject hijacking. This is a side of
Douglas we'll have to get along with or come to terms with. You change
the subject and he changes it back. Interesting and I'll leave that to
you both to sort out. I don't see the need for my direct involvement.
I can only give advice.

  The poster did not ask for TB! filters. The poster asked for
  Bayesit suggestions. Mine is to dump it.

  If there is interest in how to defeat spam w/o bayesit, it has
  been discussed quite frequently on this list  &,
  in addition, I'd be happy to provide the basic filters I use to
  do the job for me.
