I reported it on this list. I've not heard any responses, either
before or this time. I've not reported it as a bug, since it may be
WAD, though no idea why it would, since it just clutters up the task
bar.

Yet one more clue just discovered:

I have taskbar at top of screen. If I minimize the bat by "normal
methods":
click minus sign in upper right
right click on real button and choose minimize
just click on real button

it then works normally, minimizing the program to the task bar.

BUT if I right click on the "false button" and choose minimize a
miniature "the bat" top bar in the lower left corner of screen. This
is visible only if all programs minimized. That is, when you open a
window of any program (at least those I've tried, IE, Chrome, Bat, and
a couple of others) that "mini bar" is covered up, but reappears when
you view the desktop itself.

AND if you click close on that button, it closes the Bat ungracefully,
saying that it has encountered an error (the standard such Windows
message, don't recall details of wording) and is checking for a
solution. It then restarts the Bat. It appears nothing is lost or
corrupted, though haven't tried it when have had a new message window
open.

Replying to my own message, but noted one added possible clue for
developers. Clicking on the "real" button does what is expected,
restoring minimized window, or minimizing the window, etc. Clicking
on the "greyed out" or "false" button does nothing. BUT if you right
click on the false button and choose close, it closes TheBat (i.e.
both buttons and the application). The right click also gives you the
option of minimize and restore, but neither of those are functional.

I now see the two "applications" as well, despite there being only one

Of course for most of us, it is public in the phone book anyway,
unless we pay them the fee to keep it private.

Most in US don't have check guarantees, though they do have overdraft
protection (i.e. the bank will automatically lend you the money in
hundred dollar increments, up to some predefined limit).

Basically, they're eliminating the float, which makes sense to them.
But in most grocery stores and such, there is not float. But you can
always pay by credit card if you need to float it.

Checks here are never free. You can buy them from the bank, but many
companies will sell them to you at a much lower rate per check.

True enough. And those aren't listed in phone book.

One of the nice things now is the ability to keep the same phone
number forever, whether cell, wired, changing cell companies, etc. I
recently changed cell providers and kept the same number. Would have
been a major problem if I didn't keep it, due to so many business
records being keyed to it.

As noted, my final public reply on this getting-off-topic thread, but
will be happy to discuss with anyone who cares by private email.

I don't think it is Vista related, since others have reported it here
too. But can't swear what OS they're on. Maybe if others have it on
non-Vista OS they could report it.

But I don't see two PROCESSES in Task manager, just the display of the
second button in the Taskbar. Task manager shows just one process
named thebat.exe. Other programs do show multiple processes. For
example, chrome.exe (which I've just made my default instead of IE7,
despite a couple of shortcomings) shows five processes, even though I
only have 3 tabs open.

That's what I know as of now.

Most US banks put it on by default. In the past, at least, stores
would always ask for it when you wrote the check and they checked your

I still know many people who don't have computers, and/or don't trust
the internet at all. As has been said on the list, the net is safer
than most other places for money transactions, but old ideas die hard.
I always carry some cash, but haven't personally written a check in
several years, and as noted, wife rarely does.

I will say that checks here are electronically verified in most
stores. They're scanned quickly, and checked against your account (the
store just gets an OK, no details). And in some bigger stores, it is
done as an EFT, just as if you'd given them a debit card; in those
cases they just hand the check back to you.

Lots of changes everywhere.

I raised the issue recently and didn't get a response. For me, under
Vista Home Premium, I get it at all times, whether Bat starts first
after a clean boot, whether I'm using IE, Chrome, or anything else.

In fact, think I raised it just a couple days ago. Not a big deal,
just takes up extra room on a crowded taskbar (at the top of screen

> You mean your own postbox or ...?

Yes. In many parts of the US (maybe most) you can leave outgoing mail
in your mailbox. The real problem is when it is one of the very
common mailboxes on a post next to the street or highway. The letter
carrier comes by in a little vehicle (sort of a small panel truck,
usually) and if the red flag is up, meaning you have outgoing mail,
they stop and get it, even if they're not delivering any to you that
day.

Some apartments or condominium complexes have those, but they also
usually have a locked box that you can drop things in.

>> I know.
>> They took outgoing mail containing five checks on two banks.

> Checks? How long ago was this?

Three years. My wife handles the money, and she now pays almost
everything electronically, except for a couple that won't handle that.
Those get dropped at the post office.

The criminals drive around in a van, and if they see the flag up, the
grab the mail, and drive on to the next one with flag up. While one
person drives, one rides on the passenger side and does the grabbing
mail and putting flag down, and one or two others are in back with
liquid that removes the ink from the checks. I saw the checks when
they came back and it was almost impossible to tell something else was
ever written on them. Then they make a fake drivers license or other
ID with their picture but my information. They have all the equipment
in the van. Then they write the checks for an amount that in each
case is slightly smaller than the original amount it was written for,
to make sure it won't bounce. When they write the check they cross
out the phone number on it and write in a "new phone number" that is a
phony, so that if there is any problem, the merchant won't call me, so
I won't be tipped off to a problem. The first I knew of a problem was
when I got an overdue credit card bill. She ALWAYS pays ALL bills
within a week of receiving them, so knew there was a problem.

Anyway, the crooks ultimately got caught, the banks ultimately put the
money back in our accounts, and all was well. A hard lesson learned.
Also, the credit card and other companies each removed any "overdue
charges" from the accounts and our credit record was made clean. But
it was a VERY time consuming thing to do all of that. I spent 25 to 30
daytime hours on it over a ten day period.

So, sorry if this is too long or too off topic. I assume that there
are conditions in many places where crooks could do the same thing.
Oh, yes, the stuff they buy is pawned and they get money to buy drugs.

Actually the internet is much safer. As you point out, you give the
card to all sorts of people. And then there are the people you give
it to on the phone...and on and on.

As a side note, but an important ond, DO NOT PUT YOUR MAIL IN A BOX IN
FRONT OF YOUR HOUSE for the letter carrier to pick up. Your mail can
be taken by a crook and your identity and/or money stolen. I know.
They took outgoing mail containing five checks on two banks. All were
washed chemically and rewritten for their own benefit. It took about
3 days of my life to sort it out with police, banks, those who didn't
get paid, etc.

Always put your mail in an official mailbox at the post office or
elsewhere.

Presumably so, but what I have is a directory called /all my stuff/

I think that is a "batism" (as opposed to a baptism). I also go back

Remove Duplicates from Target field: Deletes files in the target directory that
were found in the source directory and were identical. If the Binary Check
Files is on (Compare Options), files whose contents are identical are
considered identical, otherwise if the date and time stamp is used to determine
whether files are considered identical.
Recreate Directory Structure Only: The directory structure of the source is
created on the target but no files are copied. All subdirectories under the
source path are reproduced regardless of program settings for view
subdirectories (View Menu or Options-General).
Delete All Empty Directories (from the target): Directories that contain no
files on the target will be deleted. No other file operation is performed.

All that being said, however, remember that the bat stores messages
for each folder as ONE FILE. So if a file has some messages deleted
and some added, that whole file will be replaced by the other file,
which may have DIFFERENT messages added and deleted.

Perhaps relevant to your other comment about different install
locations, I consistently install ALL of the software I want to
synchronize between two computers to ONE directory, namely "/all my
stuff/ for me. So the whole contents of the directory are synched back
and forth. It does mean I have to be VERY careful to synch before
opening the same program on a different computer without synching
first. Otherwise I could lose things, both sent and received, as well
as changes made in my calendar program, etc.

BTW, for calendar I used to use "Time & Chaos", which I've liked for
some ten years. They recently (like last year) changed to !ntellect,
which is same calendaring with an integrated mail client. I switched
to it from TheBat!, but within three months, since it was clear they
weren't interested in upgrading the mail side of it, switched back to
TB. I may never even try again to switch away from TB. (And I only
tried it due to the integration featurewhich was terrible)

I used the program even before I used The Bat, clear back in days of
using Eudora. It also syncs several other programs, including my
calendar program, a collection of personal files, work files, and so
forth. The folder in question runs about 3GB. In fact, when started
using the Directory Toolkit it was probably under Win95 and know the
stuff I synced fit on a 3.5 floppy. Then I moved to CDR, then to
flash drive and/or external USB. Generally do it with a 4gb flash.

As noted, probably using a version of it for ten years or more. It
will do a lot of other useful things as well, and well worth the 25
bucks I think it is now.

I'm either syncing to an external drive or to a network drive, so no
firewall issues. Don't recall if ever used it with Remote Desktop.

Sure. It copies over all the settings in the directory. It appears
that some settings are written to registry, but everything related to
your mail files is just fine.

> How long have you been using the program?

Forever. :-)

There is a shareware version you can download and try if you want,
so take a bit of time with it and see if it is worth springing for
the "big dollars".

I'm downloading from that site now. The latest version. Assume that
when install it it will install over the other and know that it is
still paid for (just like TheBat does).

If there is a sniper toolbar, I sure don't see it. I have added the
'mark as junk' and 'mark as not junk' buttons to my toolbar long ago.

Also, related to updates, I've set options in the bat to check on
startup for both regular and beta updates, but it hasn't notified me
of .18, .20, or .20.1. Is there a problem?

This reminds me of my need for an updated version of the paid

and often works overtime and is a bit funky.

If someone could tell me where to get the latest update/patch, I'd

One other thought: I keep two computers synchronized daily, morning
and night, by using a little program (25 bucks I think) called
Directory Toolkit. It does a host of other things, but I use it to
synchronize a directory called "all my stuff" from one computer to
another. I install TheBat!, all of its files, and half a dozen other
programs into that directory. Then the program syncs from one to the
other. You can do it with drives on one mapped to the other on the
network, or more frequently I just do it with my flash drive or other
external USB drive. It is also handy way to synchronize to a backup
drive. I always have it set to add new files, delete ones no longer
on the source, and update all that need updating. It saves lots of
time since it only updates that small percentage that need it.

I don't know why, but on the XP box the F4 does a reply with an empty
reply message, which is same thing you describe.

Like your situation, I have no idea of the reason for difference.
I've tried to check settings pretty carefully between the two, but
can't see any differencesexcept for the ones I missed, I'm sure.

Have you tried F7 instead of F4? I've found that for an unknown

On this Vista Home Premium box it is the F4 "it has always been".

Right. And of course you don't necessarily have the window set full

As just posted, I never saw any specific rules, or else napped through
them. That's how it is with us old geezers that have been in the
computing business for 48 years (yeah, vacuum tubes, punched paper
tape, etc, etc).

As noted also, I've run lists for just under two decades in multiple
environments, and am fanatic on trimming quotes. If I screwed up on
that, my apologies. I'd have to check my outbox to be sure.

I also noted that I only top post when it makes sense to me (i.e. can
see whole content in one screen). But you can be sure I won't do it
again, and that I'll recover from the whiplashes.

And you can be sure I'm a law and order type of guy. If I know the
rules I'm happy to follow them, whether I like them or notwhich
irritates me no end every time I take my Corvette out on the freeway.

But to get back to a questionwhat the heck does the top posting
have to do with PGP anyway?

I'm not dissing anybody. And I have no clue who is a moderator on
here. I have moderated LISTSERV(R) lists, from 15-20 at a time, for 19
years, and am well familiar with the problems, prerogatives, etc, of
being one. I'm nearing retirement and have cut down to nine of them
now.

But if expressing an opinion on top postings not being a sin in
certain situations is considered "dissing", I'm missing that clue,
too.

And, I don't recall getting a welcome message that explicitly said
"top posting is a mortal sin and will send you straight to some very
hot place". Of course there could be senility setting in, or it could
be that it went into my spam folder along with 95 percent of the stuff
that arrives in the box. The wonderful AntispamSniper is fantastic,
about 99.8 percent perfect at the moment for me, but like me, and
presumably thee, it isn't yet perfectnor do I expect it to be.

Re[2]: Window split

2008-03-13 Thread Dan Lester
Follow up on this. I have mine laid out with full height folder column
on left, then on right the message list above and msg view below.

What I can't figure out how to do (if it is possible) is to keep the
window split on the right side DIFFERENT for different folders. Why?

On most folders I want the split to show me a few msgs in the list at
top, and then most space taken up with the window with below
containing the message.

But for my spam folder, I want almost the entire right area taken up
with the list, and a very small message window. Why? I sort spam by
subject, and then very quickly delete it. That way I can quickly skim,
and on occasion (not often, I've got the filter very well trained)
find something that isn't spam. I can go through the thousand or more
spams a day in a couple minutes.

But then I have to resize when go back to any other folder.

Not a major problem, but one of those nagging irritants.
