Hi Miguel,

Thanks very much for answering. I realised fairly soon that this list wasn't
very busy, so I sent an email to Ritlabs, and they answered very quickly.

In case it helps anyone else, they said:

"Newer versions of The Bat! are backwards compatible, this means the latest The
Bat! v10 will be able to restore backups created in v4 or any other earlier
version of the program.

If you have large accounts, then consider creating separate .tbk backups for
each account."

So I split up my very large accounts into a series of smaller ones, downloaded
v10, and
the restore function worked perfectly!

I've been using v10 for a few days now, and I haven't noticed any problems with
it.

I'm very happy, because I have a huge number of emails dating back around 20
years, and I can now search and retrieve them very easily on my new W11 machine.

Thanks!

One reason I'm thinking of upgrading is that I read you can now resize images
in version 8. It's always bothered me that I couldn't do this.

I'm currently using the new version as a trial, as my license apparently doesn't
carry over to this version, but I can't find how to do the resizing when
inserting a picture.
Does anyone know how to accomplish this?

Go to Help / Check for upgrade, and it will direct you to the download

You have to download the file manually, close TB!, and then
double-click on the downloaded file.

Your mails, your settings, and your licence will stay in place.

We release major The Bat! versions approximately every 12-24 months regardless
of the sub-version number. The currently sold licenses for v8 will not be
accepted by v9 when it is released. For the past versions we did post
announcements on the start of selling licenses for the next major version.
Currently we are still working on v8.

Re: Upgrade to new version

2017-11-13 Thread Maxim Masiutin
Hello Tom,

First, buy the version 8 registration key and enter it for your version 7
registration.

Version 8 keys are backwards-compatible for version 7 as well.

Make sure that The Bat! 7 displays your version 8 key, it should tell in the
about box that the registration key is valid until version 8.9.

Then, download and install the version 8 .MSI file. Don't uninstall anything.
Version 8 will update all the program files and will keep using your data files.

If you like to pin The Bat! to the Windows Taskbar, the icon will no longer be
valid. To make it survive installations of the new versions, do the following,
once. After you have installed version 8, we would recommend you to manually
create a shortcut on the desktop to point to C:\Program Files\The
Bat!\thebat64(or 32).exe, and then drag this shortcut to the taskbar.

Thanks, that was it!

I had already download that TB! version again and reinstalled, hoping
that the certificates will show up in the ABD, but they didn't.
Checking here on my home PC, I don't see any certs in the RootCa
addressbook either...

I disabled avast! in the office, and could use the computer without
problems. Windows 10 automtically enables Windows Defender when no
other antivirus is enabled, so I was reasonably safe (I hope).

I only wonder why there was no MITM problem with avast! under Windows
8, and it suddenly appeared after the Windows upgrade.

Your antivirus is doing a MITM attack on the connection, which is why
it's failing. It might work if you switch TB to use the Windows

Jack, I just did all that.

Filemgr - TB!folder - thebat!.exe - right click. Make shortcut.
Copy shortcut (drag) to desktop - right click

No links to 'pin to ..' anything at all, not on the task bar, not
on the menu, not from the icon on the desktop, nor from the icon
on the taskbar after TB! is loaded. In fact, before sending this,
I just went to the file manager and checked to make sure those
links wouldn't appear on the .exe icon, on right clicking it. I'll
check again after closing TB!, but I don't expect anything
different.

Some of this stuff may be WinDoze being 'helpful', but I'm not
discovering anything there, either.

The weird thing is that now TB! and some other packages are
loading at much lower resolution than they were, or probably
should be. I'll pick the brain of the guy who loaded the system
here this time. I never used to let anyone load my systems, and
maybe I need to go back to that, but he really is very much more
knowledgeable than I, and he offered ... and it was a gift, and
one shouldn't look gift horses in the mouth, should one? Or have
they changed that rule since I was in school ..?

lol! I do appreciate the help, though. It really is beginning to
seem like anything I touch goes badly south these days.

Cheers!

The only one requiring it seems to be TB!. I'll try later when I
reboot.

Actually, mine is very much simpler, but this is NOT the sig
which is indexed to this folder. Yes, I use the macros, yes, it
worked, not for months or a couple of versions, for YEARS.

I haven't had a chance to dig around and find out where it's
getting this file, or why it isn't honoring the links in the
templates. It takes so long to plow through the mail and file it
manually that I haven't got there yet. Nor to the filters.

But it would be a help not to have to load it manually every
time, so thanks again! At this rate, I'm going to owe you my
first born son! lol!

Don't hold your breath ... I'm past the relevant age :-)

Cheers!

Well, I might be able to help with some of this stuff. Lets
try getting a TB! shortcut on your task bar. First, close
all open windows on your desktop. Second, if you're running
Win 7, go to START+COMPUTER. When the window opens up
double-click LOCAL COMPUTER, then double-click PROGRAM FILES
(x86), locate and open (double-click) the folder THE BAT!,
right-click on TheBat.exe. From the menu which appears
choose CREATE SHORTCUT. A TB! shortcut
(TheBat.exe-shortcut) will appear below TheBat.exe.
Left-click and drag that shortcut to your desktop and drop
it there. Close all open windows, left-click and drag the
shortcut down into the task bar and release. A dialog box
should appear saying "pin to task bar" which it now should
be. Now delete the shortcut remaining on your desktop as
it's no longer necessary. That's how I got my TB! shortcut
onto my task bar. The same can be done for any program on
your computer.

As far as the sudden slooowness, I can't help there.
Your sig, maybe. My sig looks like this:

The macros (all preceded with a percent sign) will supply
the correct information when you select the template you're
going to use. As to where TB! gets the template to use, as
there are several places to create templates, that's a
secret known only to select grand masters of TB! I joke of
course but I always have a helluva time figuring out which
template I need to modify to accomplish any changes.

It may be that your sig(s) have text instead of macros in
them which is why they haven't changed. For one thing as
you are probably already aware, the "cut mark" has to be
DASH+DASH+SPACE+RETURN to work correctly.

There are templates in the AB of course but also in ACCOUNT
PROPERTIES and FOLDER PROPERTIES. I think that's all.
Which template gets used under which circumstances has
always been a mystery to me and I've successfully
accomplished changes only through trial and error (mostly
error).

Hope some of this helps.

I can't either. At all. I've tried every way I could think of.
The links don't come up, period. Every time it has to be started
with a 'search for software' .

It's annoying, but less so than the filters, the sig files, the
sudden sloowness ... those are dealbreakers.

Still fighting for it, but running out of steam. This sig, for
instance, must exist on my system somewhere, but it is NOT
current. I'm running Win7 at SP 1, or thought I was, and TB! is
now at 5.8.10 for a certainty .. unless the install failed
catastrophically with no messages, but put the old version up.
Where'd it get it from??? Sig files are hard linked in the
folder/address templates!

In my computer it is unuseable. It will not send or receive messages. There is
still a lot to be done.

The 32 bit version is useable but at this stage gives little or no advantage
over version 5.8.10.

I give next a copy of what Maxim said when alpha testing started:

What's new in this ALPHA (English):

1. Support of IDN (Internationalized Domain Names) in email addresses.

2. The Bat! version 6, unlike previous versions, is a fully-Unicode
application. This gives advantages to the users that work with multiple
languages simultaneously. While previous versions worked mostly well with
multiple languages in file names, subject lines, etc., there were places
that a language different that Windows-default language “for non-Unicode
programs” might not work well in The Bat!.

3. There will be 64-bit version of thebat.exe also available alongside
32-bit version.

4. There is a new sorting office option – extract files by masks.

That's the dash dash space on a single line that many mail and usenet
clients use to indicate the end of the body and the begin of the
signature.
When quoting everything beneath the signature delimiter is ignored.
As you can see, I didn't quote your signature, because you used a
signature delimiter.
A signature is a tool against unnecessary quoting and it's courtesy

It is the that you obviously have in your template

another size and font (if set so) and isn't quoted in a reply.

You don't have to install the old version first, though that might
depend on how old your current version is. I don't expect any problems
with a backup from v3, but a backup by an older version might be
difficult to restore, so if you were using v1 or v2 then a two step
install might be advisable.

TE> Or can I just pay the upgrade price and download from the

There is no separate download file for an upgrade, you simply download
the install version and go with that. When you were using v3 you can
use the v3 license for the current version. The v3 license is still
valid for v4.0.x from v 4.1.x you'll need a new license. As the guys
at Ritlabs started publishing v4 versions since last year my guess is
that the first 4.1 version won't be far away now, so a license upgrade
to v4 will be necessary soon, I guess.

If you had a licensed copy of v3.x, it is still good for V4.0.x. There
is no need for a separate licence.

Anybody's guess. This is v. 3.85. Two years ago in September, we got
3.xx.

If you're being watchful of the price, I'd wait another three months,
anyway. However, when 3.xx came along, and some people got caught in
the situation you describe, IIRC correctly, those who had bought
within the last few days were given refunds for the upgrade. Within
the last few weeks, an even more substantial discount than the one
being given to others who were upgrading.

But this is total speculation. For myself, if v. 4.xx came out
tomorrow, I'd buy it. The improvements have been that great over the
last few beta series.

Version 3 is a totally different beast to your version 1.62 and I think
you'll be pleasantly surprised. Anyway, you may well be entitled to a
free or vastly reduced upgrade should TB! bring out version 4 in the
near future. No mention has been made of it as yet. We're still chugging

No, you won't have to shell out more money. v3 will still be working

Yes, go ahead and get v. 3.85.01. So long as we are in the 3.xx
series, your current registration number is good.

I simply installed v. 3.85.01 over my current (beta) 3.81.18--which
was the beta rar for the 3.80.06 msi install. And I was good to go.
My registration number was automatically entered.

We had to pay for the upgrade (at a discount) from the 2.xx series to
the 3.xx series. I expect that when and if 4.xx comes along, there'll
be an upgrade charge then.

For now, no worries. :)

Thank you, Mica, for your thoughts. The upgrade to 3.x along with the
change to drive C: went quite smoothly with respect to the program installation
and the program finding the .TBB files. All is running smoothly, but you
were right... I'm having to do some of the configuration and filter set
up manually.

With regard to the new filtering setup, I see in the help file a
reference to "Advanced filtering conditions". But I do not see them
anywhere in the sorting office.

Also, I make considerable use of regex in filters, but I have not been
able to get them to work in the new filtering setup. In version 1.x
there was a checkbox for regex, but I don't find one in 3.x (unless it
is in the "Advanced filtering conditions" which I can't find.

If anyone would care to contribute a pointer on these to issues it would
be much appreciated.

A pain-free way, as to (de)installation itself, would be something like
this...

Copy your mail databases (usually the folder "Mail") somewhere on D:
drive.

Deinstall the old TB.

Install the new TB (and tell it where the mail database is).

  ***

The rest of the happenings is not necessarily pain-free though, so if
you have some more complex/specific filtering system or similar, it's
good then to do another copy of your "Mail" folder ("just in case"),
since "automatic" transfer into the new filtering systems and file
formats, coming with version 3, will not work always, so the pain might
be present woohoo.[1]

Your v2 license works with every version of the v2 series.

Hi Susanne,

You can upgrade for free upto (but not including) version 3.
I would recommend the latest version 2.xx. I am not quite sure which on that is
.

All you need to reinstall TB! is a backup made with TB! and the mail with your
registration info and a version 2 install package

You simply reinstall TB and import the backup, point it to your registration
email and you are done.

Simply put, your message base is encrypted. In the regular version of
The Bat!, the message base is stored unencrypted. Anyone with a text

As I see it, there are two ways to decrypt the message base. You can

You can simply enter the pro license number, the home and pro

The only difference between the two installation packages is that the
pro version contains additional languages, but you can download the
international pack for those too. (It works for home users too.)
TB's real pro features are unleashed by the license code.

Yes, it means running the complete installation.

Simply run the install. It will automatically update the old one.
Uninstalling and then reinstalling the newer version isn't necessary.

In fact, on the TB! download page, below the table listing the files

You can only do that while upgrading from v1 to v2. You can't do it

the Account properties | Transport settings from IMAP to POP3.

Not entirely the case. The issues relating to this upgrade were much
discussed on TBUDL as well. It's just those that like to live on the
bleeding edge became experienced in such issues before others, and
were able to help out more.

I use IMAP, but then I'm on of those that lives on the edge. I can
give you hope... IMAP is improving greatly. The next release will
certainly hold improvements.

Yes, from what I remember, they introduced a new view modes feature
around then.. That is another item that has certainly improved
dramatically in the latest betas, so keep your eyes open for the next
release.

I can honestly understand where you are coming from. When I first
installed the early 1.63 betas which was about the time of IMAP, there
were problems... they are ironing them out... as they do with all
bugs... yes everybody on the beta list was pretty upset at RitLabs for
releasing the first 2.x version... but since then, things have made a
tremendous improvement.

During the beta cycle, we were told to convert to POP3 before

that the automatic procedure was tested before incorporating it into
the release. Clearly, it was not tested on all configurations and

If there were no such thing, why is there a CONVERSION PROCESS during

that IMAP folder will be created as POP. There is even an apology for

I would *LIKE* to use the v2 I paid for. What is the best way to
upgrade to v2? Should I export all my folders to Unix mailboxes? Do
I need to completely uninstall again and try installing v2 from the

Would it help to set all accounts to POP and do another full backup in
1.62? Then try to restore from that?

I'm trying here... but this is a lot of work for a COMMERCIAL product
that I paid for. Come on, RIT LABs get it together... Please.

One more thing... I seem to recall seeing something about icon sets

have any problems. You may wish to hold off on the latest and get
2.01.3 for now.

After installing your new version. Backup by going to Tools/Backup
within TB!. Download TB! on your other pc. Go to Tools/Restore and it
should restore everything as it was on your previous pc just fine. It
has always worked for me after reinstalling windows.

Thanks!

This was indeed the problem, and after changing the file
attributes, TB CE installed without a problem.

I had transferred TB from an old computer per CD a couple of
years ago.

Now to get used to the new look, and trying to find out what
"Inbox-Known" is...

It sounds to me like you've done a CD restore at some point and left
your executable and many other files setup as Read Only. That would
behave the way you're suggesting.

You'd have to use Windows Explorer to modify the file properties of
all of the files in the c:\Program Files\The Bat!\ folder not to be
Read Only.

You should certainly *not* have needed to install to a separate
directory. That's one sure fire way of losing the very settings you
wanted to keep.

Then again you've taken a huge leap of an upgrade. 1.53 is a very
old version of the software. Most people are upgrading from 1.6
versions. I don't know if anyone has any advice about that.

If you have any manually created folders in your account tree named
'Inbox' or 'Sent' _OTHER_ than the normal account tree Inbox and Sent
folders you should rename them to something else as TB!v2 will convert
them to account folders. If you have folder templates assigned to
manually created folders named Inbox and Sent you won't be able to
access their templates or get rid of them.

You don't even need your old serial number. Just buy the upgrade and
when the key arrives by email it will recognise the valid v1.xx
installation. Very smooth, and in my case very handy because I had
lost my v1.xx password.

IIRC my column settings disappeared and I had to redo them. Other than
that, everything staid the same.

I think you'll need to buy a new key for v2 anyway, as the original
key you purchased was valid for all 1.xx versions only. But you can
currently buy an upgrade key for a special discount, if you advise the
S/N of your TB v1.xx version.

Believe me, I'll definitely back up TB before upgrading! :)

If something goes wrong, I can always go back to the old
version, if I have to...
