Sync SmartBat with CalDav server or Windows Calendar

2020-02-22 Thread Andrew Savchenko
Hello,

I am unsure as to how many of us actually use SmartBat for scheduling,
but wouldn't it be neat to sync it with an external CalDav or "Windows
Calendar"?

I have looked around and it seems like such option is currently not
available.

@Ritlabs,
Was this ever requested / discussed / on roadmap?

SmartBat Usability Improvement; Outlook Interface emulation

2004-02-22 Thread Martin Schneider
Hello,

I also postet this mail in the BETA-Mailinglist and only got one
answer. Maybe in this group more people want to agree/disagree my
opinion. ;)

As the discussion about the SmartBat started I also have a wish:
please improve the usability to create a new date. It should be
possible to create a reminder when double clicking on a date or right
clicking on a date (or date-range) to create the new data. Also there
should be a possibility to see more than the actual month.

For usability (I am sorry to say that) Outlook is the standard. And I
must say for usability Outlook is quite okay for the Calendar. So
please have a look there how to make easy usage of calendar.

Also good would be that you can invite people. It would be perfect if
it even would be compatible with Outlook for invitations and
confirmations and stuff like that. I think many business user would
wish that feature.

I hope not to get flames because I mention a product which really is
not good (as a mail client) but it is fine with the workgroup
usability. If you could improve the handling of "The Bat" in the
scheduler that would be great.

Another question I have is that almost every software is able to
synchronise with Outlook. However if you want to use another (better)
software then you have the problem that you can't synchronise data
(calender, contacts, etc.) with the other software (e.g. MobilePhone
software, PDA's and stuff like that).

Would there be a possibility to program a interface which is
simulating Outlook but retrieving data from "The Bat"?

And what do you think about such an interface? I think it would be
very helpful and would make "The Bat" for many people (who need the
workgroup function) an alternative.

And no, this for sure is not a showstopper for the release of the
actual version of "The Bat". But I think this feature no other
software has so far! So think about it. ;)

This is again a workaround - but it's what I use with some
success.

Instead of restarting SmartBat every time, hide and show it
with your favourite hiding/showing utility.

For me it's powerpro.

This way the time only gets inserted if I ever restart TB -

I find it handy to have the little notepad right there within the

I'd be bothered if TB became a fully-bl[own/oated] PIM like Outlook --

I guess that depends on whether you use an "English" dictionary as
used in most of the English speaking world, or an American one.
"SmartBat" is of course a trade name so unlikely to appear in either

Mark, I was talking about deletion via Windows Explorer, when one no longer
needs the text file(s) or the tab. See the rest of this thread for details.

That's probably why the "delete" command doesn't work on the pad
itself because it's a text delete command.

I was unable to delete things too - which is why I stopped

I had hoped version 2 would have solved that.

The Close pad I find useful as you can then reopen Pads to edit them

Right. I just tried it. It is much more convenient than firing up vim

I see no reason to delete the tab.

The name of the file is identical with the name of the tab. Default
location is "...\The Bat!\Mail", but if you navigate and open a file
in another directory, I cannot find a way to make that directory
visible, either.

It's a great way to keep a cookie file growing.

I also use it to edit my mass mailing template.

I save occasional clips of text that I wish to keep.

In fact, in all my uses, I don't wish to delete the linked text document
if I wish to delete the pad in SmartBat!

My only grouse here is that SmartBat! doesn't seem to offer a means of
you knowing where the linked text file is and its name.

Ohm that's a way of using SmartBat I never thought about - a
replacement text editor.

Well, we have different needs here, so I agree that whether or not the
file should be deleted when the pad is deleted thought be optional.
Setting in SmartBat itself:

1.) Delete text file when pad is deleted
2.) Keep text file when pad is deleted
3.) Ask every time

The latter is because I might use it the way you indicate, but not
always, so... ;-)

If so, then optional please. If no option, then leave as is. I've been
using it as a means to edit certain text files quickly. If I wish to no
longer do so, I wish to remove the pad and not delete the actual file at

I have noticed that the missing part from the main pad is back now

number for those of us who want to keep an eye on it.

> You can even fire a cruise missile at it, totally destroying it via

I didn't try the cruise missile thing, so that part is not
confirmed... By MS Explorer, I guess you mean windows Explorer and not
Internet Explorer, and I used total Commander instead and deleted the
file while TB closed. Upon restart of TB, the tab is still there in
SmartBat, but of course the text is gone. But it is not empty:

I had two entries in the Main Tab. When I open SmartBat, the new tab
is opened automatically, and I see the older of the two entries from
the maintab in the new tab. When I go to the main tab, that entry is
missing. Back to the new tab, it is gone there too. Closing SmartBat
and reopening it shows the entry back in the new tab and missing from
the main tab, but gone again when going back to the new tab. No text
file for the new tab on the HD. Anybody can confirm this?

So, I type something into the new tab. A text file gets created on the
HD. Close SmartBat, reopen, the old entry from the main tab is there
again, plus the newly-type text. Main tab is still missing that entry.
Back to new tab shows only the newly-typed text. Text file on HD
contains only the newly-typed text. Is anybody seeing the same?

You can link a pad with some text file (F6, right click, New Pad,
select a text file).

If you receive newsletters you could extract relevant or important
parts from those mails using TB! filters and append them to that
file linked to SmartBat.

There was¹ a German website where you could input your favorite
actors, directors, movies genres etc and they sent you a newsletter
telling you when there was something on TV that fitted your
preferences. Needless to say that these newsletter came with a whole
lot of advertising. So I created a filter to extract the one line
with the important information and appended it to a text file.

Later I just had to press F6 to take a look at the list of good
movies on TV the next days.

Just a thought about using SmartBat.

Carsten

¹ I received their last mail in April. Hm, there are still some

I guess "Notepad" is just "a name" in this context.
This editor, currently included and used, does not have anything in
common with Notepad for me, except the fact is allows to enter
characters. Notepad is not capable of displaying bold characters, nor
colored ones. It does not evaluate e.g. the "Calculator" makro, etc,
etc.

So I guess chances are not very high the editor will change, but the
same low chances are the "real Notepad" will be used.

Yes that's how I call SmartBat, but this obviously requires running
TB! all the time. More importantly, I'm stressing independent SmartBat
because it would (or should) include basic functionality like Save,
Print, Open, etc. Besides, it would be a nice freeware gift from

Open SmartBat,(F6) right click in the body of the pad, choose new pad,
or press Ctrl-n, name the new file and you have a new tab at the
bottom. I do wish that links and E-mail addresses could be made
clickable in SmartBat.

Where did you learn of CTRL + F4? It works as you said.

I see in SmartBat.INI,

[Pads]
Count=0
Active=0
Pad#1=C:\Program Files\The Bat!\MAIL\Billybong.txt

where Billybong.txt represents the contents of the tab I deleted with
CTL + F4.

If I delete the whole line, "Pad#1=C:\Program Files\The
Bat!\MAIL\Billybong.txt," the file that was allocated to that tab (I
guess "Pad#1" is what the "tab" should be called) is removed.

But what about Count=0 and Active=0? I guess "Count=n" means the total
number of tabs (where just the main tab=0) but
what does "Active=n" mean?

Or you could create a quick template shared to all accounts, and called it say
newcookie, and all you put in it is:

then if you don't like the one you have, delete it, then type

I think I can follow what MT was asking ... I have the "%Cookie=..."
macro in my template and it works fine. However, if the displayed Tag
is not what I want or is not appropriate for the message and I want to
change it, I would highlight the tag, right click and select "Insert

They come from the "Cookie Window" that is loaded at
Account->Properties->Templates-Cookies.

Mayhaps this should go to the suggestion box, but instead of
preloading the tags, this could be set to contain a listing of cookie
files. Then you could split your cookies to different files according
to content. And when you want to insert a cookie, you can select from
a specific file or "random".

I keep mine in a file and use the macro like this to access them:
%cookie="C:\My documents\TB\Cookies.txt".

Insert: %cookie="C:\Program Files\The Bat!\cookies.txt" into your
template, of course substitute the path accordingly.

I find it useful for a number of things.

Maybe if RIT Labs included the possibility of auto
clipping & printing, it might be more useful to you --
replacing climate as a separate program since you can call
it by a system wide hotkey. Depends on your use of
  clipboards.

SmartBat is a hotkey (default=f6) accessible notepad replacement that
functions similar to TB message editing. It keeps its text in
%TBdir%\Mail\SmartBat.TXT (settings in SmartBat.INI). Also, it saves
each time you exit.

You can load up a whole raft of default pads. For instance, I keep my
"cookies" file in there, which makes it really easy to add new
taglines as and when they come in ;-).

Open SmartBat!, Press Ctrl-N. It prompts you for a new file to open.
Select the file.

That's it. Now you have two tabs at the bottom of the SmartBat!
screen, and the one you just opened. Want another file permanently on
tap? Open that one too. I currently have 7 files auto-loaded into
SmartBat. And very nice it is too.

I don't. Most of the time because I have a clipboard extender called
MultipleClipboard, which offers me 10 clipboards - usually enough for
me. After I have collected snippets there I paste them into TextPad or
directly into the application where I need them and compose my text.

I've only used SmartBat on two or three instances as a notebook,
mostly for testing purposes. Since PowerPro offers a utility "Notes"
(PostIts) I don't need SmartBat.
