Requesting an unsub involves getting a confirmation from the server
that it's you and that you mean it. Once you reply to that, you are
gone. Instantly. If you have a rampant spam engine at work protecting
you from things it thinks you don't need, you may not have seen the
confirm messages.

Within minutes you should get a message that somebody using your
address tried to unsubscribe and that you've got to confirm that
request. After your confirmation is processed (another couple of
minutes) you're out.

To unsubscribe, use the Specials | Mailing list | Unsubscribe
option while viewing a list message (if you're still using TB) or
you can log into the web interface to manage your list membership
information. The address of the list interface can be found on the
list information web page that appears as a link on list messages -
www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLinfo.html (which also includes
instructions about how to leave the list). Or you could send a
message to [EMAIL PROTECTED], wait for the Confirm

  It shouldn't be necessary - BUT at an overall there are just too many
  lazy I haven't been able to find any instructions for that messages
  when the information is there in full force. This is a problem on the
  internet in general. I am an administrator for 6 lists myself, and I
  receive a fair amount of requests. If the requests are reasonable then
  I reply accordingly, but when I receive messages that just include a
  word or two saying remove or unsubscribe when there is an explicit
  unsubscribe-address easily viewable in each message relayed thru the
  list, then I don't even bother to reply (well actually - each time
  you send to me as an administrator, you'll get an autoreply with a FAQ
  in, and that FAQ includes descriptions on how to unsubscribe).

  Most people just don't care to dig out the information they should
  have _kept_ when opting in to a list (the listadmin's Welcome message).

I don't see it as a problem on TBUDL. There are two or sometimes three
such requests per month. I think your feeling fed up stems from your
other lists.

Besides, this is part of a test to see, if changing the footer to a URL
instead of containing all the addresses for un/subscribe etc. will
result in an increase of onlist requests. I don't feel it has. I think
that people who don't use URLs in footers won't look at e-mail addresses
either... I'm afraid, being rude won't change anything about this. :-)
Anyway, you can let off steam...

  Not from the lists I administrate - my own system using explicit addys
  for unsubscribing works as I want them to. But I have seen this problem
  pop up on some other lists I follow. I was talking about a problem in
  general - people tend to excuse themselves that they can't/couldn't
  find the info anywhere - yet the info is on their nose!

 Besides, this is part of a test to see, if changing the footer to a URL

I know it is very hard to read _and_ understand. This plus the fact many
people seem not to recognize the footer I'd suggest (as annoying a prepended
text is) such an information in every mail because this not ending
'unsubscribe' mails are (for me) much more annoying.

Before somebody writes about a filter: NO! I don't set up a filter for this
kind of mails as this filter _have to be_ to much general. I don't want to
miss a mail somebody writes about the 'unsubscribe facility' TB-Beta offers
with the new introduced ml-support, as one example.

thx for reading

DAC It is, I agree, mildly annoying when someone posts an signoff message
DAC to the list. It would, I submit, be a major annoyance to have
DAC something like this at the top of every message.

I did not say I'd like it, but for me in the second I wrote the mail it was
the last chance I saw making this folk seeing where to get hints about using a
mailinglist.

DAC I'd say we have burned more band width discussing the most recent
DAC unsubscribe message, than would be taken over the next 6 to 12 months
DAC with similar errors by other users.

OK ... the very first I wanted to write was: I don't care 'bout bandwidth
and this would have two reasons: bandwidth is fixed per line, so this mail
can't use more bandwidth then others :-) second: I think what you meant was
traffic :-)
But I don't want to write this anymore as I see your point.
I'd never disagree. BUT: My attempt was finding a way teaching people
_essential_ things. I get this kind of mails on at minimum 9 mailinglists. I
don't know if one can imagine this, but it is not a subject of traffic for me
anymore, it is something general. I don't care 'bout the few k such messages
take and I don't care 'bout the few MByte they take when multiplied by MLs, I
simply slap my hand at my forehead when getting _again and again_ this kind of
mails (plus this nice tiny #?@°! auto-responders on MLs *g*) with no
ending in sight.

I'm able to delete this mails silently, htey do not eat up my diskspace not my
traffic or bandwidth but they are simply silly and show how _lazy_ so much
people are not even reading _simple_ text.
As I like the idea of _a little bit of netiquette_ I presume somebody
describing to a ML is _reading_ subscription confirmation or at least the
minimum of a footer he/she get appended _at every mail_ automatically. It
really ain't to hard or to much.
He/she even can't expect the public transports driving when he/she is standing
at the bus stop, but he/she _has to read_ the timetable too ... this simple it
is for me.

Neither my first mail nor this one is/was an offense to anybody, I don't judge
anybody for his/her behavior as this mails are not what I call spam, but I
don't give up my struggle to show this people where to find appropriate
information. They need to prove they know how to drive a car and they do not
need to prove how to use a mailinglist, so the minimum is to expect they learn
about net-_basics_ on a volunteer basis, and one of the basics is: The one
whom read: wins!

He didn't know it. John replied with an MS product, namely OE, and
since the original message was generated in HTML, the reply was
generated in HTML as well. Of course, without letting the user know.

Suggested solution: use The Bat! in future.

ML to reply to the message to complete the unsubscription process.

Ming-Li, that part of the process works just fine... the problem though,
is that the messages keep coming in. I unsubscribed my @Home address
almost a week and a half ago, received and returned all necessary
confirmations, and I am still receiving messages.

Not too long ago, I had unsubscribed my @Home address from all 3 Lists
because I had opened a new OperaMail Account, and I had to ask the List
Owner to intervene, because no amount of confirmations and
re-unsubscribe requests would stop the messages from coming.

No, the links in fact do not do what they say they do... unsubscribe a

We usually handle this sort of thing off-list so as to avoid creating a

This likely falls on deaf ears and had no effect whatsoever. :-) It's
far more practical and less time consuming to simply hit the delete key
and move on.

 You can use "NOMAIL [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]

R i already tried it on TBBETA and it works fine, even without my
R e-mail address - it just takes the sender's address.

I saw that, nice to hear it work (due on Mdaemon beta 3.0k not work,
now we use 3.0n and will upgrade to 3.0 rc3 next week). Current
version only notify the requester only (about change the mode).

 use "NORMAL [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]"

R i thought "MAIL etc." ?? that's what it says in the help message
R ... "NORMAL" means non-digest, i think.

NORMAL can be use as general command to (back to) normal mode, but you
can use MAIL ... instead.

R i like this NOMAIL better than UNSUBSCRIBE, that sounds so definite
R ... ;-)

:-) so do I, because you (still) can post to the list (response to
what you see on http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com).

Hi there!

 Pegasus and prefer it to TB!?

I'm really using Pegasus (and suffering from its almost
nonexistant 8-bit support), but if I preferred it to TB, I'd
probably unsubscribe from this mailing list, don't you think so?
I *need* decent support for complicated MIME structures like
MIME digests (I have heaps of these in my Pegasus mailbox),
and I would *love* to be able to transfer my folder system
together with filtering model to TB. These two are the main
reasons preventing my own switching from Pegasus to TB.

Okay, and here's my own listing of Pegasus major bugs for
those who're maybe considering switching to Pegasus (to make
them reconsider, probably). This list is the main reason for me
not to recommend switching from TB to Pegasus, _especially_
for multilingual users:

-The option "when the message is deleted, open the previous
message in the reader" causes triple GPF _always_;
-The text to the right of the reader right boundary cannot be
scrolled to (at all);
- Vertical scrollbars don't work as expected (everywhere; David
Harris says it's a Windows bug which I seriously doubt);
- Attaching another mailbox to list, switching to that mailbox's
user, then returning back results in your OWN mailbox
attached twice, and so on ad infinitum;
- The signatures in anything else then ISO-8859-1 cannot be
edited at all (they're then displayed in the wrong font); the same
applies to heaps of other places;
- The Unicode font scripts aren't understood: Pegasus
_always_ uses Western; hence to use other fonts you need to
manually add the corresponding definitions to Font Substitutes;
but even this fails when Pegasus is displaying HTML or
RichText messages --- regardless the font you've set up, these
will be _always_ displayed in Western, thus making Russian
ones unreadable at all;
- Identity attached to a folder doesn't work as expected: it
doesn't switch the "Custom heading line" to the attached
identitys one;
- Using Pegasus with HP-made printer drivers installed as
"default printer" is a pain; in a while causes system hang;
- Printing 8-bit-containing messages with the option "Auto-wrap
at right margin" doesn't work at all;
- USB printers can't be used at all;
- Printer spooler names with blanks aren't permitted;
- PGP encryption/signing strips out the signature provided that
either the message body or the signature contains 8-bit;
- You'll never be able to re-code the erratically encoded
messages without leaving Pegasus: it simply hasn't View--
Encoding functionality:-(;
- Something more that I don't remember:-)

  Nevertheless, I don't think Ethan gonna love Pegasus: it isn't
  intuitive at all, and a person that apparently can't even click on
  the "unsub" link attached to every message on this list is likely
  to get any kind of problem with the Flying Horse:-)) No personal
  offence, please!

 Who knows what his needs are anyway? Good luck to him. :)

He'll end up using OutGlitch, i believe:-)

Re[2]: unsubscribe

1999-12-05 Thread Douglas Hinds

Hello Alexander all fellow TBUDL members,

Sunday, December 05, 1999, Alexander wrote in response to Ali's
comments regarding Alex's stated preferences on TUBDL for certain
function (primarily related to filtering), which he finds more useful
in Pegasus than in TB!:

Particularly during the 30 day evaluation period, when it's reasonable
to assume that many persons are evaluating more than one email client
(as I certainly did), it's equally reasonable to assume that many
persons will for one reason or another (related as much to their own
backgrounds, perceptions and abilities as to anything else), choose to
remain with a one that isn't TB!

During the long interchange that ensued regarding "Activating only
certain filters", it was evident to me that Alexander identifies with
TB and by contributing in such a clear and detailed way (as Ali
himself has so often done) to to the discussion on filtering, was
supporting both the ability of current registered users and those
evaluating TB to understand and get the best out of TB's actual
filtering mechanisms, but also to understand other possible (and
possibly preferable) filtering options that could certainly become
implemented on future versions of TB.

To that end, two of the responses that I made to Alex at the time were
bcc'd to TB's principle programmer, believing as I still do that the
criticisms were well founded and these issues are addressable and
hopefully will be in v. 2.

As for myself, I have downloaded no alternative email clients for
trial since registering TB and am more than willing to work within
TB's current limitations regarding filtering, which I have *not*
hardly used in the past with other email clients, preferring to see it
all in one place on arrival and manually separate it from there, since
while a filter may be effective regarding (say) a given subject or
source, it can not be so effective in terms of the weight, importance
or need for follow up given to a particular message by me at the
moment.

I have begun to use TBs filtering mechanisms and *do* feel that a real
need exists to be able to invoke filters manually *on an individual
basis* through what could be termed a filter manager, where all
filters created are available for selection. (And I would like to see
a similar "manager" available for selectively activating the ticker).

This goes beyond the folder level filtering used by Pegasus that Alex
described. Being able to color code messages (or flags) via a filter
(a la Pegasus) and/or manually (as in the flags of many others) is
another a useful option I for one would like to see implemented soon
in TB, along with the ability to edit received messages (which
sometimes arrive with absent or misleading subjects, for instance).

As for Pegasus, I know people that do use it heavily but my own
experience has not been positive, due to it's erratic behavior on my
old IBM Value Point and it's "less than intuitive" (as Alex described
it) user interface. For that reason, it's not even installed at the
moment.

While TB drives me up a tree momentarily now and then due to
inadvertent keystrokes activating unwanted functions, I am very much
at home with it's advanced composition features, good stability and
ability to download and send from multiple accounts simultaneously.

In the best of all *possible* worlds, an improved TB is certainly good
enough for me, and that goes for the support received from RITLabs and
of course TBUDL itself. (I say improved because some of this was
discussed with RITLabs prior to registering). Although I've been told
of other supposedly good email email clients, I continue to dedicate
time to assimilating TB's current features and commands, which
increases my appreciation of it and lessens my interest in the
temptations posed by supposedly greener grass on another side of the
fence.

Douglas

(Any of the above is available for further diffusion if desired).
