Yeah, that is true... I forgot about that. Thanks :-P

At any rate, aliasing is the better solution for all but the extreme

Yeah, a little bit of a pain, but I guess half the people would want
it to autoset to Inbox and the other half want it to default to
something else. So I suppose nobody is going to be really happy with
it until you can set the default in the account properties.

So prior to "editing" the advanced options for the filter, remember to
change the destination folder name is the only thing I can offer.

Yes and no. By default, I agree totally with you, TB doesn't recognize
it as a sig delimiter "- --", but I, like you also have a PGP quote
cleaner, so it will recognize the "- --". Many of us do.

My point to your original post was that you didn't have "-- " which
PGP didn't convert to "- --", so nothing got snipped out of your
message when I replied. Your original message had:

,-- [ mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ]

I'll look, I think someone created a template to recognize "-BEGIN

Additionally, please snip out any irrelevant portions of the message

For the, err, fanatics of TB like us who do keep all the messages, I
totally agree with the mid: concept. However, I'm pretty sure (just
guessing here) that the majority of the list subscribers do not keep
all the messages, and that's where mid: fails. Now if we could just
get the archive tweaked where mids could be gotten from there, then
life would be good!

Absolutely. I have special address book templates for recipients on
cell phones and such so that all they get is my message (sans sig) or
my reply (sans quotes and sig).

And I agree with your comment on reading mailing lists using those
devices. Even with my Palm Pilot m515, I don't synch any of my mailing

Once again, another example of why folder templates are a bad idea
when you hardcode a list address.

Please don't use folder templates. Look into addressbook templates, or
use the macro to prevent this from happening:

%IF:"%TOLIST%CCLIST%BCCLIST"="":"%TO='[EMAIL PROTECTED]'"

If there is an address (in the case of a reply) already populated,
then it will not put in the list address.

If you open your addressbook, right click an addressbook entry, choose
properties, you can set templates for each individual addressbook
contact.

dh> I now put this into the template for my TBUDL folder, but I still
dh> don't get, what Tony has done wrong to crosspost his mail into the

Yes. What can happen for instance is if you have the macro
%TO="[EMAIL PROTECTED] in your New Message template for your
TBUDL folder, and you click on a mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED],
then your message gets addressed to both the TBUDL list and the
e-mail address you clicked on.

Try it. Click the mailto link in the above paragraph. With the Macro I
wrote, it will not address the message to the TBUDL list as well.
Without the macro, and you'll see it addressed to both when you have
%TO="[EMAIL PROTECTED] in your new message template.

Hope this helps.

What you'll want to do is place the "sound" filter at the top of your
filter list (or at least above any filters that might move this
person's message). Then on the Options Tab of the sound filter, check
the box "Continue Processing with other Filters". Make sure you don't

It's a very limited beta. Apparently there are some serious problems
with this one as there are reports of some moderators who have been
spontaneously trouted by their own beta trout. It's a very ugly
situation indeed.

However, it appears you'll be able to at least taste the trout as
follows:

This moderator's interjection is a note to all readers and not just to
the person being replied to, even if their post may have instigated
this reply. Please don't feel singled out Mark.

Please include a signature delimiter in your messages. This consists
of a , i.e., a '-- ' by itself on a line.
This allows your readers, when replying, to quote your text without
the signature and list footers since everything below and including
the sig delimiter is excluded when quoting.

You can easily automate this process by including the sig delimeter
in your templates.

Thank you.

It's because I like you so much that I make sure you get two of
everything I send...

Well, ok, here's the real reason.

I'm guessing you are subscribed to TBOT. Since I'm trying to maintain
a thread within TBOT when I declare something OT, I've been CC'ing the
OT message to TBOT from whatever list the OT message was originally
on.

Ok, that sounds confusing. You're getting two of those messages
because your filter for TBUDL is firing true because TBUDL is in the
TO field, and TBOT is in the CC field. What should happen is that one
goes to TBUDL and one goes to TBOT. There's really not an easy way to
fix this in filters.

It happens on my side too, and will happen on anyone's machine who is
subscribed to both TBOT and the TBBETA, TBUDL, TBDEV, or TBTECH list
which had the original OT message.

Doers this make sense, because I think I hurt myself... ;-)

Top posting, i.e., typing all your reply text at the top of your message

We would much prefer if you quote just that much of the message to which

Re: HTML as default on v2.00 ...........?

2003-09-09 Thread Leif Gregory
Hello David,

Tuesday, September 9, 2003, 11:40:14 AM, you wrote:
DB> And exactly how much extra is it costing you?

The point isn't so much how much you individually are costing someone,
but the collective of all e-mail, and what it costs everyone.

1. Let's say it costs 2 cents for someone to receive an HTML e-mail
vs. 1 cent to receive a plaintext e-mail. Now let's take someone
who averages 50 e-mail a day (spam included). Now let's take that
   per year.

   1 year of HTML e-mail = $365.00
   1 year of plaintext e-mail = $182.50

I can think of a million things I'd like to spend that money on
rather than HTML e-mail because someone likes cutesy colors and fat
fonts. Now, I chose 1 and 2 cents arbitrarily, but as we become
more mobile, and want our e-mail with us everywhere, cost can
become a big issue. Luckily, I'm in the U.S. where I pay a flat fee
regardless of how much, or how little e-mail I get on my Cable
connection. Conversely, when I'm mobile, it costs a *great* deal
more. Paying $40.00 for 500 minutes, HTML mail gobbles my airtime.

In the U.S. rates are pretty cheap. In other countries, even their
home internet access costs them money. Minutes are consumables,
just like toner and paper in a fax machine, and the reason they
passed the junk FAX law. When I have unlimited airtime for a flat
   fee, then I might reconsider.

Now take the HTML mail to a global scale. $365 x millions and
eventually billions of people per year. Yeah, that's a serious
   waste of money.

2. Most mobile devices have limited space. Why would I want an HTML
message twice the size of a plaintext one with no value added
eating up all my available memory.

Download 10 messages, delete 8 HTML messages, download 8 or 9 more,
   delete 7 HTML messages ad-infinitum.

There's a time and place for HTML e-mail. There are some discounter
outdoors companies that send me HTML e-mail showing their latest and
greatest deals with pics of the items for me to see. I like that, I
asked to receive them. However, I don't need a one line e-mail from a
friend saying they'll be over in an hour with some animated background
image of trees swaying.

Good question. Generally, I go to the paragraph in question and hit
ALT-L. I normally have to do this because while their original text

of them go over 70.

Oh, I absolutely agree with you 100%. Except, when an e-mail
client has HTML e-mail turned on by default, I can guarantee you 99%
of the end users will abuse HTML e-mail. That's a guarantee!!!

I should know, I manage the SMTP gateway and mail servers for nearly
5,000 people in a corporate environment which is based off Lotus Notes
which has HTML e-mail enabled by default. The end users don't know any
better.

It drives me completely insane how many people send little one liners
with big background pics, cutesy HTML fonts and colors. Things like
going away parties, retirement parties, birthday parties, furniture up

doesn't quit.

*Exactly*!! and Exactly why this is a Bad Thing (tm). When I drive
my car, and if I run over someone, I am personally held liable for my
actions in court. If I use my computer and it becomes infected with a
virus because I like to open every attachment (because somebody said

everyone in my address book, I'm not held accountable except by maybe
one of my recipients.

We as techies have the unfortunate burden of trying to educate the
masses on what is good and bad, and until the day comes where a user
can be held liable for their mis-actions on a machine, everyone
suffers. See:

This posting violated the list rules regarding top posting.

Top posting, i.e., typing all your reply text at the top of your message
and following it with all quoted text below, is not encouraged and we
actually request that you not do so on this list because

a) It makes it difficult to glean context from what you typed at the top
of the message

and

b) It encourages excessive quoting.

We would much prefer if you quote just that much of the message to which
you're replying, so we know what it is you're referring to, and then
below the quotation, type your response. If you're responding to more
than one parts of the original, then quote each part separately and
follow each part with your response.

Now, I know that you may not personally prefer this format and that you
may disagree with some of the reasoning here. We very much respect this.
However, this is the format that most of the active members here prefer
and all members are expected, and are being asked to use the format that
will make most of the active membership here comfortable reading. You'll
likely get a more responsive group when you post using a style that is
comfortable for them to read and understand.

Thank you.

Please include a signature delimiter in your messages. This consists

This allows your readers, when replying, to quote your text without
the signature and list footers since everything below and including
the sig delimiter is excluded when quoting.

You can easily automate this process by including the sig delimiter

We do have one, see the bottom of the message.

When we see someone blatantly change the topic by reply, we use the
below template. However, for messages getting out of whack in view by
reference, I have noticed that from time to time, but don't know
exactly why it happens as I never really looked into the headers. I'll
start paying attention to that to see what I can come up with.

Please don't use reply to start a new thread. Your question has been
posted at the bottom of an unrelated topic. The Bat! is a threading
mail client.

See "View | View threads by | Reference" to see where it ended up.

The result is that it will only be seen by those reading that thread
instead of by all users.

I recommend that you post your question again using a "New message"
if you want to see more replies to your query.

*Exactly* the point! There are boatloads of lurkers on the lists.
While everything is spelled out in the list rules that *everyone* gets
when they subscribe, nobody ever seems to read them. Therefore, the
lurkers would never know what's allowed and not allowed if it's not
public.

I've had this same conversation with Yuki off-list. Marck, Allie and I
have been moderating the TB lists for ages now. We've just about tried
every form and fashion of moderation known to mankind, and we stick
with what works for us over the years. We still tweak here and now
(i.e. the recent standardization of moderation messages for example),
but for the most part what we're doing does work.

Marck pointed out in his reply about users taking up the moderation
when the moderators don't make it public. When we were privately
moderating, it was unbelievable how much traffic was generated by
users telling the person who did The Bad Thing (tm) that they violated
the rules. We've been there and done that.

We still use private moderation for sensitive issues, but those are
much more rare occasions.

Alas, what Marck said also is most true... We just like to hear
ourselves talk. ;-)

Since I work for the gov't that makes it just fine! ;-)

True enough

Not that I think anybody would like to move to TBOT just to sing our

Sorry, gotta do it one more time... The sig delimiter is:

dash dash space

It looks like you're missing the space afterwards. It's gotta be
there.

:-)

This moderator's interjection is a note to all readers and not just to
the person being replied to, even if their post may have instigated
this reply. Please don't feel singled out St.

Please include a signature delimiter in your messages. This consists
of a , i.e., a '-- ' by itself on a line.
This allows your readers, when replying, to quote your text without
the signature and list footers since everything below and including
the sig delimiter is excluded when quoting.

You can easily automate this process by including the sig delimiter
in your templates.

Thank you.

I can't confirm. I just copied over all of my TBBETA messages to a
folder (4,575 of them), then did CTRL-* to expand all the threads,
CTRL-A to highlight all, and then pressed the DEL key. it took less
than 6 seconds.

To further check (just in case weirdness of copying messages), I
selected all the messages in my Kerio Firewall list folder (2,617
messages) and deleted all of them (less than 5 seconds). I haven't
read the Kerio List since their new pay version came out, so it was no
big loss.

Even deleting a single message, it was pretty much instantaneous.

Not sure what you mean here. IMAP? I'm just using POP3 to pull down
messages from the Domino server, and TB correctly updates all folders
and message ticker.

Yes, IIRC, Put will just dump the contents of a file into the e-mail
message (canned messages), include will also dump the contents of a
file into the e-mail, but you can have macro statements in the text
file which will activate during its placement. So, with the include,
you can have dynamic "puts". I use them in my mailing list to do
things like auto-enter time, date, etc.

Ouch, I'm the bad guy!

Again, not using a cut mark was something we've already tried. If
people properly trimmed the list footer and signatures from their
replies, then I would have no problem doing away with the cut mark.
However, people generally don't and therefore we get a fifth level
reply with five list footers and five sigs. Then that starts up
the whole roar over people who have to pay for bandwidth by the amount
they've downloaded (not flat rate).

As for why you (Pranav) believe the list is rude and unfriendly,
please, by all means show us where. Maybe we missed it. Maybe you
misinterpreted. Who knows, but show us why you believe it to be rude
and unfriendly rather than just saying it is and expecting anyone to
believe you.

As for some of the people who said they check over your messages many
times before sending. Why? A very simple template fixes everything.
It'll put the cursor in the right spot automatically so you don't top
post, it'll automatically put in a cut mark so your sig and list
footers get removed when someone replies. It won't help much in
overquoting, but it seems like relatively common sense. Get rid of
anything that doesn't pertain to what you're commenting on. i.e.
quoting the line "On Friday, December 23, 2009, 10:00:00 AM, you
wrote" doesn't do anything other than clutter up the reply. Quoting
the "-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1" stuff is in the
same boat.

The template is simple, here's mine:
