You mean comment, right? Not post. The author of the blog posts, readers
comment.

At which point I'll ask, who else blogs about this profession of ours? Has
anyone considered it but not followed up or, like Katie, have you just
started out? Is there anyone who doesn't know what a blog is, or how they
work (in the social aspect of things that is)?

Just curious to see who else out there shares this little hobby I picked up
a few years back..

Gordon,
Thanks for the clarification. I'm relatively new to blogging. I haven't

[TCP] Scrumming blog

2007-09-13 Thread Lisa Gielczyk (TCP ADMIN)
When I started the TCPwiki (which is growing, thanks to several
contributors--http://www.techcommpros.com/wiki/mediawiki-1.6.10/index.php/Main_Page),
I was thinking the next thing I'd do is offer tech comm blog space to
members of the TCP community.

Do you think it would be helpful to have a bunch of tech comm blogs in
one place? If you're interested in having this type of space, let me
know. If there's interest, I'd be happy to set it up. You can respond
on or off list.

Thanks!

Re: [TCP] Scrumming blog

2007-09-13 Thread Sue Heim
Personally, I don't pay a lot of attention to blogs, even if they are
professional. I also have a lot of disdain for some bloggers, who seem to
post things on various lists (not here!) and then say go look at my blog
in order to get more eyes on that blog. I think it's vanity in that case.

I also don't place a lot of credence in most blogs. Stream of thought
consciousness or not, blogs generally are one person's opinion or musings.
Also blog formats require the blogger to start the conversation and everyone
else must comment. Not a real dialogue, in my mind.

Will I ever create blog? No. Do I read blogs? There are two that I read on
an occasional basis.

I was helping out with HR a couple of weeks ago and someone came in to
interview for a developer position. His resume said he was a Scrum-master and
did Extreme Programming. Those terms just cracked me up. I was terribly
disappointed to learn that being an Extreme Programmer does not mean he
programs from a laptop while dangling off a bungi cord from the top of the
roof..he does not even do it on a skateboard...seriously, how extreme can it
be? :)

You're of course entitled to think what you want to think. However, as
someone who posts on various lists and then says go look at my blog
(at least in my sig), I can assure you that vanity has nothing to do
with it. My blog is a marketing device, pure and simple. It costs

The top graphic is the original graphic. auto means fit to original

The confusion here is that height in percents does not mean percent
of this element. It means percent of the height of the enclosing
element. In other words, its not 50% of the image size, its 50% of the

It'd be nice if w3schools explained these subtleties in their

Re: [TCP] percents in CSS

2007-09-13 Thread John Garison
Another of Subcide's excellent tutorials, this one on Relative Font Sizes:

http://www.subcide.com/tutorials/relativesizes/

Relative font sizes are something that I've avoided for far too long due
to bad experiences in the past, and being a picky designer who likes
things pixel perfect. The new subcide design has seen me change to using
em's for all my text sizing, so that I can be sure that I'm setting a
good example for everyone reading these articles.

Relative font sizes are pretty easy, so this tutorial will be short and
sweet.

  62.5%

The best way I have found to get relative font sizes to behave correctly
is by using a percentage font-size on the body, and em's for everything
else.

So first things first, set the font-size on your body to be 62.5% right
at the top of your CSS.

body { font-size:  62.5%; }

This magic number makes the units that you specify in em's, correspond
better to the same measurements in pixels. I think that was a confusing
sentence. Here's an example:

* 1.0em now equals 10px in size
* 1.2em now equals 12px in size
* 1.8em now equals (you get the idea...)

Simple right? Not quite. There's one other important thing to remember.

  It's All Relative

The main thing that you are going to have to remember is that when you
specify a font size using a relative unit like em, that means that you
will increase or decrease the size of that font relative to its parent
container.

Say you have a #content div, and you want the text inside it to be the
equivalent of 12px font size. You would do exactly as you imagine you'd do:

#content { font-size:  1.2em; }

Now, if you had an h2 tag inside that #content div that you wanted to
be the equivalent of 18px, setting it to be 1.8em would make it much
bigger than you would expect. Instead of being (roughly) 1.8x larger
than your original 62.5% size, it is now 1.8x larger than your #content
font size, which is already 1.2x larger than your body size.

So for example, anything inside the #content div that you specify as
font-size: 1.0em; would stay exactly the same size. Anything you specify
as 2.0em would be (roughly) twice the size of your #content font. If you
can be bothered to work out what your font sizes need to be using maths,
be my guest, but I suck at maths so I just do it by eye.

  Benefits

Now users in most browsers, including IE, will be able to resize the
text on your website, and it will all stay in context, with headings
being relatively larger than body text, copyright text being smaller
etc... Accessibility hounds will annoy you less, and the opposite sex
will find you more attractive.

***

And if you haven't looked at their CSS tutorial, you're really doing
yourself a disservice.

My 2ยข,

John G

2007-09-13 Thread Char James-Tanny
 Another of Subcide's excellent tutorials, this one on Relative Font Sizes:

 http://www.subcide.com/tutorials/relativesizes/

And to make life really easy in general, set the base font (using
John's example or whatever one makes you happy ;-) ), and then only
override it as necessary (for example, for headings). Then, if changes
occur (and changes ALWAYS occur!), you only have to change the font
size in one or two places, not everywhere.

(BTW, when I set up my CSS, I include a style definition for headings
just for commonalities:

h1, h2, h3, h4 { color: #000; background: #fff; font-family: Arial,
Helvetica, sans-serif; }

And then separately define the font sizes:

h1 { font-size: 1.8em;}
h2 {font-size: 1.4em;}

So if I decide to change the heading color, I only have to change it
in one place.)

it doesn't, come back here and scream at me!!

http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals/Default.aspx (Bottom right of page)
TopStyle is a powerful tool for creating standards-compliant Web sites.
Written by the creator of HomeSite, TopStyle is a single editor for CSS,

It's NOT a wysiwig -- you work with the CSS and HTML files by hand, but
there are some convenient prompts that help you learn and some built-in
tutorials.
