It's probably by design as I looked up the anaconda/changes page[1] and found two features related: * x86 uses GPT disklabels by default on all machines, even non-EFI. * If a GPT boot disk is used on a non-EFI machine, a warning will be displayed. The proposed changes are intended to make the existing criteria slightly more generic, without losing their meaning. Additionally, I've made a few other minor changes and added a few questions. Please take a few minutes to review the proposed changes (highlighted in red at the links below). If nothing alarming surfaces during review, I'll proceed with operation genericize [1] early next week. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Jlaska/Draft_Alpha_criteria_revision I'm unclear on the addition of the word 'package' to 2: what does this clarify? What is the other type of install if not a 'package install'? Deleting CD, sure. Yeah, deleting the CD's for one. It's technically not needed, but we have a lot of users that boot a DVD, and install from the online repositories. I was trying to articulate that this only applies to packages from the media. But perhaps that's redundant after saying media-based install? On the deletion of the 'primary architectures' mention from 4: we should probably replace this with something in the preamble, similar to what's there for 'release-blocking desktops'. I was hoping to avoid too much preamble, since for me, the eye really draws to the bullet list, and not the preamble. The deletion was going to be accompanied with my other ideas for secondary architecture handling. But I decided to break that up into two parts, so for now I'll back out that change. Are we at the point where we need to create a section called 'Assumptions', which would include release-blocking desktops and primary architectures? On 7: Not sure about this - I think booting from boot.iso and then using the DVD as a package source is explicitly supported, isn't it? Was this criterion meant to ensure that works? Good discussion. I was trying to bring the criteria closer to what we actually test (fedora-qa) and maintain (anaconda-devel). Booting the boot.iso with askmethod, then installing from the DVD is a use case that we don't explicitly test and I wasn't intended with the original criteria, and we'd be hard-pressed to get fixes for. I discussed this use case in #anaconda ... while we don't explicitly prevent a user from doing this, there is no logical use case to do this. They requested rephrasing the criteria to explicitly mention booting, and installing from, the DVD. Then the default DVD install can cover this criteria or we need to add the askmethod, repo=[1] and graphically adding DVD repo[2] tests? I think it's very rare to use the latter options when already installing from DVD. In addition, there's no criteria referring to 'preupgrade from order release test'[3] yet, should it be put into beta 11.[4] or the final criteria? Re: easier way for deltaiso users to deal with the xz compression change
Hi Andre, Thanks for the deltaiso executable, it works great. From the notes on 'what to test' part[1], I spent some time reading the explanation from the two mails you linked to finally find these executables. Then I think if it would be more convenient if there's a direct link to them saying that people who use F-15 deltaisos on F-14 system need them? And the explanation can be put into delta iso page[2] as you've already done. How do you think? I've posted executables at http://robatino.fedorapeople.org/deltaiso_executables/ so you can either use these, or roll your own. See the README concerning the version (f14 vs. f15). Most people will need the f15 version. The f14 versions are only for someone running F15 or later and needing to use a diso for F14 or below, which is uncommon. Of course, if you are using F14 or below and need to use a diso for F14 or below, or using F15 or above and need to use a diso for F15 or above, then just use the deltaiso package from the Fedora repos. sha256 checksums: d1a9c980404059b1fa93a0cebe00e0d17eb49c1a0782433b9e82157f4adcdf6d applydeltaiso_f14_i686_staticliblzma 23893d6f633644006b18a03c01ef4560fc8536d73f2e7712fc9736c24dc55818 makedeltaiso_f14_i686_staticliblzma 185c19740be3ed108780c1be9954aade8891841fb88006bce98ce7f5137707c1 applydeltaiso_f14_x86_64_staticliblzma 765d6d302ada19cfdbe38e7c8012cf915235791cf54c515150422a9d0059f811 makedeltaiso_f14_x86_64_staticliblzma 98ba3875e76c9a0d54a71158efa2b366c7410170261b6fe64484fc3149840708 applydeltaiso_f15_i686_staticliblzma 91e25cca3982cbf0ef72123703a9afded3c8f7ec41738cc7dce2c98c5b06c576 makedeltaiso_f15_i686_staticliblzma 702e30d7e90af66edbc693426b482ee1c79257acf37dc21a6bfb40c6c1bbe7e7 applydeltaiso_f15_x86_64_staticliblzma c7f5f0b047dd5d1d0c8315070ee09e691fc1ee016fbd13cbbead3330477216f8 makedeltaiso_f15_x86_64_staticliblzma -- test mailing list test@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/test -- Contacts Hurry FAS Name: Rhe Timezone: UTC+8 TEL: 86-010-62608141 IRC nick: rhe #fedora-qa #fedora-zh -- test mailing list test@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/test

For a test day which has many contents[1] such as What to test, Prerequisite for Test Day, How to test etc, it is hard to put all of these into the 'Notes' field. This field doesn't support TinyMCE or any other syntax editing. [1] https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Test_Days/Template Oh I see. My initial thought is this might be more of a nice-to-have feature, and possibly out of scope for the initial effort. Either way, I would say not a MUSTHAVE requirement. To me, anything content related should be left to the wiki ... the wiki does an outstanding job in this regard. Anything related to test cases and test results, should be managed by nitrate (or something similar). I see. Today I talked with TCMS members, they said they could support TinyMCE syntax editing to the 'Notes' area. Therefore we can either achieve this by a link to wiki or edit it in 'Notes' field. Okay snip Since it's internally use only, the permissions only have three: 1. anonymous - read. 2. tester - read and write any case/run/plan. 3. Admin - manage the tcms system. Correction. Testers have not only read and write any case/run/plan permission but also site/management administrations. Admin has Authentication permission besides what testers have. Should we add this to the musthave requirements list. Support for anonymous read/write *and* FAS integration? Sure, I've written them down. Thanks 7. Result type - Nitrate doesn't have 'warn' but has 'error' result status. Modify it to 'warn'? What is the significance of 'error' in nitrate? Does that mean there was a test case error, not necessarily a software error? It presents an environment error, the user guide suggesting the use of result status is: Idle - Default value. The Test Case has not been examined. Passed - Test Case met all the expected results. Failed - Test Case did not meet all the expected results, or produced an unhandled exception. Running - Test Case is in progress. Paused - This status is used to denote a problem with the test case itself that prevents the test from being completed. Blocked - Test Case has a dependency that has failed. Error - Test environment has problems that prevent Test Case execution. But I guess such 'error' status will be seldom used. Yeah, probably. I can see the case for warn, but warn really just means the test passed, but bugs were discovered during execution of the test but did not impact the outcome of the test. Yeah, then let's add another 'warn' status? In my opinion, that can be a nice-to-have feature, but not a requirement. Unless I'm wrong, we use WARN to note that the test passed, but other bugs were discovered while executing the test. That same information can be supplied in nitrate by marking the test PASS, and linking to additional bugs filed. Seems like we can convey the same information without adding a new STATE. Okay, that makes sense. Will see if there's any problem when using it in a pilot instance. snip Oh, how does nitrate designate the site admin and test run admins? So far there are two user groups: admin and tester. Both of them have the permission for site admin and test run admins. Okay, that works. It sounds like admin and tester have the same Are they single persons, or is it a user group (aka FAS group)? I think we'll want to ability to designate multiple (but few) site admins (SHOULDHAVE), and need the ability to have multiple admins for test runs (MUSTHAVE). If it only supports one user being listed as the administrator, we'll want to review what types of tasks that restricts (add tests to the run, new runs etc...). I was told that they are working on multiple site admins and multiple admins for different groups by trying to integrate with another system which is not open source. The TCMS members informed the FAS system are investigating it. Okay. snip I know you mention anonymous login support above, can you also list FAS authentication? Apologies if I missed it already. Do you mean integration with FAS? Yes please. Apologies if that was already listed, I may have missed it. It's listed. I see it now, thanks! Based on the discussion, I've updated the requirement page[1] with solution field added. When these requirements are filed to bugzilla, I will add bug no. to each one for tracking

Good, I do use this more often than I realize. 2. History comparison - Different versions can compare with each other. Yes , after talk with Hurry I understand this is very important for community cooperation testing. But the implementation of roll back of test case is really not easy . In development of 3.4 and 3.5 we plan to improve history function of test plan/case/run, show the edit history of every field. And in fact there has change log for test case. I see, if this is a difficult task, IMO we can achieve this step by step. 3. Description part in test case - Currently there's no 'Description' part for test case format on Nitrate, should we add this part or use 'Setup' part instead? No, I don't think 'setup' is the right place since we also use 'setup' in our wiki test template. Does nitrate support a summary or any other field to describe the intent of the test in human readable terms? Oh, it has Notes area, maybe we can use that. Ok , let me know if you have other requirement about this 'Notes' field. Thanks for supporting, at a first thought, we may want the tinyMCE syntax for it. 4. Grouping cases (by media) - Need a way to separate the cases to different groups in one test run. How can we achieve this in Nitrate? Probably different test runs of the same plan. One run would be for the DVD ISO, one for the netinst.iso etc... Perhaps this will need further exploration. Yeah, use different test runs or sorting the cases by order. 5. Documents in test result page(Run) - There's only a little space called 'Note' for documentation on Nitrate and it doesn't support syntax. should we ask for more spaces with syntax supported for test runs like test days? Can you explain in more detail? Are you proposing we move the test day wiki content into nitrate, so it's a one-stop-shop for test information for that event? I meant in nitrate, there's only a 'Notes' field to support a simple summary of each test run. For a test day which has many contents[1] such as What to test, Prerequisite for Test Day, How to test etc, it is hard to put all of these into the 'Notes' field. This field doesn't support TinyMCE or any other syntax editing. [1] https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Test_Days/Template I see that Test Day is a very good cooperation testing activity. I think you can use Test Plan to describe the Test Day Document instead of Test Run. The organizer write all information above in Test Plan document. And put test cases into this plan. On that day ,every tester could make a new run for himself/ herself . I user Nitrate made a test plan to simulate fedora test day on Feb25, please see the attached screenshot. In this way , information could be stored in plan documents, and test result in every test runs. Wow, good idea. Make a plan for each test day first, then include test cases to the plan and create a run. I will try this when setting up a test instance later.:) But now Nitrate can't supply the matrix test result show all user's result like the wikipage[1]. We need talk about the test result report feature in future development. 6. Moving test results - Moving previous results from a test run to another. AFAIK, there's no way to copy some of one test run results to another. Good catch. I think with nitrate, you can selectively include test cases when creating a new test run, right? Meaning, we wouldn't need to include *all* tests in the plan when creating a new test run? Yeah. but then we need to make very sure that certain cases results won't be changed in new run. The summary of the new run results is also not intact. Anyway, this is a workaround. This brings up another question ... permissions. With the wiki, anyone has permission to add or remove tests from a test run. How will that be handled in nitrate? Since it's internally use only, the permissions only have three: 1. anonymous - read. 2. tester

When RC1 is available, its test run is created for testing, if it has some blocker bugs which don't meet release criteria, RC2 with the fixes would be posted for testing. A new test run would be created and the test cases are the same as RC1 run. But for some cases that we assume the fixes won't affect, on wiki, we moved their RC1 results which are supposed to be unchanged directly to the RC2 run, see the example pages[!]. This way, for RC2 run, we have both new tested and moved results, and the cases are intact for each run. Proposed must-have Features for Nitrate compared with Wiki
Greetings, Now let's continue the discussion[1] about TCMS management. After the feature comparison between wiki and nitrate, the features which are supported in current wiki, but not in nitrate have been identified[2]. History comparison - Different versions can compare with each other. 3. Description part in test case - Currently there's no 'Description' part for test case format on Nitrate, should we add this part or use 'Setup' part instead? 4. Moving test results - Moving previous results from a test run to another. AFAIK, there's no way to copy some of one test run results to another. 7. Result type - Nitrate doesn't have 'warn' but has 'error' result status. Modify it to 'warn'? 8. Multiple contributions for each case - Support multiple test results for one case run. 9. Authorities for pages - Pages on wiki with different namespaces can have different permissions, so hopefully pages on Nitrate can also have diff permissions. 10. Supporting anonymous user read-write access - Anonymous have read-write access for specified test runs. 11. Page protection - Protect certain plans/cases 12. License the content - License the contents the same with wiki 13. Upstream project community - Monitoring it and actively discussing topics in nitrate-devel@, as well as file/share bugs/requirements in bugzilla 14. Test day page(run) creation - In Nitrate each test run are built based on its test plan. Therefore, test day plan and its cases are needed before creating a test day run. Should we change our test day process(adding test plan and its cases) or should we change Nitrate to support creating test runs without test plan? 15. Test cases priority - Nitrate now has P1, P2, P3..., modify them to Alpha, Beta, and Final? 16. Each case with different platforms - Better support two platform results(i386 and x86_64) submitting for each case run Welcome to discuss the above features and provide feedback/suggestion. If there's any important feature missed, or this reminds you the advantages of other tcms tools etc, feel free to talk. What I believe Mozilla is doing (since I have not had a chance to work with their QA team yet) is flagging test cases with a form of soft failure in that the result of a testcase neither clearly passed, nor clearly failed. So in addition to Passed, Failed, and any other common states (Blocked, In Progress, etc.) you have an Unclear result state. I didn't receive the mail replied by Samuel. Weird. Hurry is somewhat wrong to say we don't currently have an 'unclear' result; we do have the 'warn' result, which is in some ways similar. We usually use it to indicate when a test turns up some kind of anomalous behaviour which isn't exactly a failure. It depends on what 'unclear' means here and how it reflects the results. If you mean a soft failure or an issue that doesn't block the case run, the 'warn' result is similar to it, then calling it 'unclear' is confusing and not accurate in my opinion. In nitrate system, it has 'blocked', 'failed' and 'error' result status to reflect a problem. User guide suggests 'error' is used for test environment that has problems that prevent Test Case execution. I think we can modify 'error' status to include all soft failures. I've added this to the requirements for further evaluation. Re: [Test-Announce] Call for reviewing TCMS use cases and comparison!
Greetings, Many thanks for Samuel's comments, I found out many valuable things to think, identify and add to use cases/feature comparison. The questions also remind me that many testers so far may be still not familiar with Nitrate, therefore can't give any suggestion upon it. So I'll introduce Nitrate a bit here. Nitrate is a new test case management system which is open-sourced recently. It has advantages on managing, tracking and querying cases, results and is similar to testopia. The introduction pages along with some screenshots can be found at: https://fedorahosted.org/nitrate/ https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Nitrate One can set up a local nitrate system with the steps in the link, we are also planing to build a testing instance during F-15. At that point, we invested in leveraging the wiki to best of our ability. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Testopia+AF8-Evaluation https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=450013 From the bug I'm guessing this is because Testopia used Ext-JS, and Ext-JS kept changing licenses. Hopefully there will only be licensing restrictions for Nitrate on the software itself, and not the created work of what one does while actively using it. That was a question I had opened with Hurry. I have no idea how we'd license the content in the system. If anything, I'd hope/expect that to match that of our current wiki. Oh, licensing and license issues. I've listed both of them in feature comparison as requirements. I looked at it before, and all I saw were three test posts from July in the archives. I believe they do, but don't yet have a strong upstream presence since there hasn't been a lot of code/progress to share until recently. This will be something I'm sure they'll want to improve as community interest increases. Add it into requirements. But I can confirm that all the nitrate developers are monitoring the list now. When community interest increases, it will become active. :) 1. I don't think we've fully explored how best to model other spins/projects, but I don't foresee big problems there. That will be fun to explore on the sandbox/staging instance. With regards to referencing older versions of a test case, I believe that support is there, although I'm not certain it's right for our needs. Keeping test documentation (plans and cases) updated is a pretty sizable maintenance challenge. I've seen many instances where support for versioned test cases allows test plans to suffer over time as they were linked against old and inaccurate test cases. Much like how the wiki is used now, we have support for linking against older versions of tests (wiki history), but we rarely ever use that feature. I expect that trend would continue in the short-term. The reason I bring this up is because OLPC's Spin releases tend to lag behind the official Fedora release. It lists what a user may do when creating a new page. Under 'creating a common page', the row titled 'Submitting format'. Would that be better named as 'Supports data entry using a form'? Ah great, I've changed it. Under 'creating a common page', there is a row titled 'Subpage using'. I don't think I understand that use case, can you explain? Okay, for example on wiki, Test_Days is under the path of QA like: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Test_Days So I tried to compare if nitrate can also organize sub-page under its main page. Under section 'Creating A Test Case', there are some red cells for the wiki for (these are also under 'Creating a Test Plan'). What does the 'red' mean. Does it mean that they are not possible, or that the solution provided is not optimal? Oh the first two below are not optimal, the last one is not possible on wiki. * Renaming a case - move to another page I think moving to another page is not a good way to rename a case, there will be two link addresses for this case. * Case draft status - manually add draft category/note It's better to have a case status called draft, or proposed like nitrate does. * Case review status - approved in ticket or somewhere else Nitrate will send an email including the proposed case id to reviewer for approval. Then the reviewer can set 'confirmed', or 'need update' status. For wiki, I remember we used to track the cases status in tickets and after approved in tickets or reviewed in test@, the 'draft' note is removed, but no sign indicates the case has been reviewed and approved. Also under section 'Creating A Test Case', the row titled 'Test case re-use (write once, link anywhere)' talks about nitrate support for cloning tests. Does this create a new copy of the original, or does it re-use the existing test? If any changes are made to one, are the propagated to the other clone? Nitrate creates new copies, so if any change is made to one, the other clone won't change. Under 'Creating A Test Result Page Template', the row titled 'Group cases (by media)', I imagine nitrate supports other methods of grouping/organizing tests in a test run? Oh wait ... this is grouping, not sorting. How would this be done with nitrate, would a test run be created for each media type? Or would we sort tests of different media types differently? AFAIK, except the above two methods, adding tags to tests and filtering them by tags is another choice. But it requires testers to filter by themselves. So.. I need think about them and compare these methods. Under 'Creating A Test Result Page', the row titled 'Redirecting links' ... is this when a test run has expired, or been replaced by a newer test run? Like if we get RC2, we'll go and adjust RC1 so people know

Re: Testing f14 anaconda
Thanks for sharing this Mike, it's very useful for testing the anaconda package in the updates-testing repo. Cheers, Hurry On Sat, 2010-10-16 at 17:17 +0100, mike cloaked wrote: There is currently version anaconda-14.20-1.fc14 in updates-testing but I seem to be the only one who has tested it ( At least according to bodhi comments) . It would be nice if this could be pushed into the main f14 repo so that it is included in the F14 builds ahead of release. I tested tc1.1 for a DVD install, but this still has the previous version of anaconda in it. If anyone wants to test the new version of anaconda from updates-testing it may be useful if I detail what I did to test it for an install. Then others could do something similar. I used a usbkey for install but other methods could adapt the same basic idea and would be good to test an alternative method. I downloaded the tc1.1 DVD iso from http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/stage/14.TC1.1/Fedora/i386/iso/ as well as the boot.iso from http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/stage/14.TC1.1/Fedora/i386/os/images/ Then I used the script from http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Bcl i.e. the file upd_bootiso referenced from that web page, and executed it with the new anaconda rpm downloaded from a mirror for f14 updates-testing so that a new boot.iso was written containing the new anaconda. This gave a file new-boot.iso in /tmp/ which I renamed back to boot.iso to be used as the test install file. What I then did was to prepare a usbkey for the install in an f13 system, plugging in the usbkey and then executing as root: umount /dev/sdb1 (since my key was sdb) Then livecd-iso-to-disk --reset-mbr path-to/boot.iso /dev/sdb1 prepares the key as a bootable device - ready to boot the new boot.iso The last stage was to copy the DVD iso onto the key as well. To test I booted from the key and this initiated the install onto the laptop using the new version of anconda (and checked on screen as the install began)- it then referenced the DVD iso on the usbkey - the only watchpoint was to switch the writing of grub onto the MBR of the internal HD rather than the default /dev/sdb by selecting Switch Device at the bootloader settings screen, and swapping the setting of first and second BIOS drive so that grub goes onto the MBR of /dev/sda rather than /dev/sdb The install for me was then uneventful and completed normally - and I have added a comment in bodhi with positive karma. If anyone else can run a test then presumably with karma +2 the new anaconda package would get used in the next compose for rc ahead of GA? Would be nice if someone else could test for an install. -- mike c -- Contacts Hurry FAS Name: Rhe Timezone: UTC+8 TEL: 86-010-62608141 IRC nick: rhe #fedora-qa #fedora-zh -- test mailing list test@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/test

Re: F14 Beta RC3 install from DVD is a world of hurt.
Hi Steven, On Sun, 2010-09-26 at 03:43 +1000, Steven Haigh wrote: Hi all, I've tried just about everything over the last 12 hours to get F14 Beta 3 to install from DVD with no success. I've been booting from the DVD and found that at the repo selection screen, only internet repos are found. The install DVD is lost and the installation will not proceed without downloading all packages from an internet repo. This defeats the purpose of having a DVD... I could see the packages in /mnt/sysimage (I think), and the DVD was certainly present, just ignored. This is not as expected. DVD installation is a basic test included in the pre-release validation install tests, and we've verified that media repo will be selected as default if install from Beta RC3 DVD at least both on kvm and bare metal. The iso should be mounted on /mnt/source where the packages are stored. So can you provide the details of your installation steps and environment? And the contents in /tmp/anaconda.log? Is this bug[1] similar to yours? Thanks in advance. [1] https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=627789 I also found that when doing an ethereal dump on my ASDL connection that each package seemed to be downloaded twice. For each package that was downloaded, I saw 2 separate GET requests heading to the web server. I could not find any specific information about this from the installer. I also noticed that the defaults for an XFS filesystem are to continue to use a 256 byte inode. This is VERY suboptimal with selinux enabled and can cause major performance issues. I lodged a bug on this here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=637369 All in all, for a Beta GOLD release, I would have at least expected the DVD installation to be tested before RC3 was declared gold :( I've also read your another thread. Well, have you noticed the test announcements(eg.[2]) sent out when each build was available? We did it every time and both installation and desktop tests were executed and the results were provided on the results pages[3]. Then based on the results and other bugs on bugzilla, the candidate was considered if it met the release criteria[4] or not. So DVD installation would surely be tested before released, but everyone has different install environment, we cannot guarantee it passes in every way. However, if you encountered an issue, discussion is welcomed in the list to help find the root cause and resolve the problem. Test cases have been well prepared on the wiki page with the help of l10n[1] and i18n[2] team, and the steps are clear for your reference. So if you used to install in your native language or know a second language besides English, this is an opportunity to try them out and help discover the issues in this area. F-14-beta-TC1 images are available for testing in this event, executing tests in virtual guest is also acceptable if you don't have extra space in bare metal. The Test Day will run all day in Freenode IRC #fedora-test-day. [Test-Announce] Preupgrade Test Day - Thursday 2010-09-02
Greetings, Preupgrade test day is coming up tomorrow: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:Current Several problems have been reported when preupgrading to F-14 Alpha, this day we will focus on preupgrade[1] to summarize the issues. The tests were designed to cover general circumstances, including preupgrade from current release (enough /boot space), preupgrade from older release (not enough /boot space for downloading) and preupgrade-cli test. Exploring additional command-line options are also welcomed for more issues discovered under this area. Please don't hesitate to attend this test day if you are interested in it, the test day will run tomorrow in freenode IRC #fedora-test-day. So if you put 'images/' under '/' in your /dev/sdb2, anaconda can retrieve install.img successfully. Another workaround is to use 'askmethod' and then configure the disk and the directories manually when prompted. But even if the install.img can be retrieved, you will still encounter another bug for retrieving iso repo[1], this has been marked in the test result page[2]. The upper size limits are already given as exact numbers of bytes, so people can just use ls -l (which is easier to remember and not subject to rounding/truncation errors). Is this okay? I'm not sure which way it is easier to compare it :) But go ahead and try it and we will see. Quite interestingly, 'ls -s --si' (without -h) prints rounded numbers (like 400M) instead of precise numbers, at least for me. That's really not ideal. --si is likewise -h, just use powers of 1000 not 1024(see 'ls' manual). -- Contacts Hurry FAS Name: Rhe Timezone: UTC+8 TEL: 86-010-62608141 IRC nick: rhe #fedora-qa #fedora-zh -- test mailing list test@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/test

The test is never completed, it runs infinitely over and over again. It takes quite some time too. Also, no report is ever shown, just statistics are continuously updated in the lower part of the screen. Very confusing. If a test cycle is completed(From test#1 to test#8, About 5 mins for 512M memory), A test result will be shown at the bottom: Pass Complete, no errors, press ESC to exit I haven't met the failure status, but a relative result is supposed to be provided after one cycle is finished as well. Ah, I never waited long enough to finish the whole test cycle :) But the instructions also says I should change the configuration, so I changed configuration to do just test #2, and it did it like 20 times over with no end at all, just repeating itself. So it depends on user choice (and whether he knows this stuff). I think this test case is needlessly overcomplicated. We just need to test that Memory Test available on installation media just works, right? So what about something like: How to test: 1. Insert installation media and display its boot prompt 2. Select option Memory Test 3. Have the test running for a few moments 'A few moments' should be more accurate, at least test#1 - test#8 is finished. Expected results: 1. Memory test runs a tests your memory, it seems to work correctly. 2. You can use configuration to change test settings, e.g. select just one single test out of the test set to be tested. Sounds better? Also add this one to verify the test result: 3. Test Report(Or test result) is shown once a test cycle(test#1-test#8) is done. I still think we shouldn't do this. Quick check whether memtest starts and runs ok is sufficient imho. Full RAM testing is: 1. time consuming 2. you never know how to handle potential error. it may be memtest issue, hardware issue, KVM issue, ... I understand you want to test full memtest featureset (all tests work etc), but we don't do that even for more important programs, it's just not efficient. Smoke testing is all I would do here (and that's exactly what I tried to capture in sentences wait a few moments, memtest seems to work correctly). I don't intend to cover all the memtest features, but think we should at least check if there's a test result shown to reflect the test, that's the main goal to run a memtest. -- Contacts Hurry FAS Name: Rhe Timezone: UTC+8 TEL: 86-010-62608141 IRC nick: rhe #fedora-qa #fedora-zh -- test mailing list test@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/test

Ok, I have waited for the whole test cycle to complete (10 minutes on my machine). It really prints Pass complete, no errors, press Esc to exit message. But - there is no report per se, the counter is just updated (Pass +1). And it doesn't mean your RAM is ok. I have used memtest for years and checked a lot of faulty hardware with it. From my experience you need at least 2 hours of memtest checking to be quite reasonable sure your RAM is ok. 4 - 8 hours are better. That's also the reason why it continues over and over again. Also, if some error is found, you don't have to wait to the end of the test cycle. It is printed right away. The message printed after one pass is complete is really not a test result. It's just a message how to exit the test. The test results are updated continuously - the screen is blue, you're good, the screen is red, you're not good. The longer you wait (measured in hours) the more trust you have in your hardware. So maybe that's the main misconception between us? Yes. I thought whether the memory test was passed or not depended on the report Pass complete, no errors,... and I never met any failed one. So if the error is printed right away, then this result is not that important and running a few moments is reasonable. Thanks for clarifying this. Chuck's would seem to be something different. Actually, I've discovered a wrinkle here. The 'Basic video driver' option isn't actually working right. For Radeons, it will result in the installer using the 'radeon' driver, but with UMS not KMS, which will indeed have unpredictable results: it could certainly work for some people but not others. Okay, that's cool. Anyway, we still have to write a specific test case template if we want help from the L10N members. I believe this is worth testing because we had a lot of trouble with this issue during the Fedora 13 development cycle. Yeah, recently I found a bug(#617040) in F13 GA which even prevents install by using Arabic language. This is one of the issues which should have been discovered under the F13 cycle. So to improve on this, in F14 cycle, how about we hosting it as a test day topic[3]? The translation is gonna be finished after Alpha phase, so this test day could be someday in the beta phase targeting on language translation and keyboard tests in anaconda for Beta candidates. Test cases[2] could be further modified or changed for use, and then we need to find testers both inside and outside the groups to maximum the participation and bugs discovery on that day(s). For me the loss of the other options on the menu isn't really critical until beta, but the install process should at least start if you just boot and wait at Alpha stage. It may be too much effort to draw this distinction, though, in which case we may as well go with #1. Yeah, definitely #1. I found out that the tests in your template are to test packages on desktop, so I'm curious about the language/keyboard tests in anaconda during installation of images(such as boot.iso, DVD, or CD). I had a talk with noriko earlier, she told me that the translation of built images will be due before 2010-08-23, therefore the test of this part is planed to happen between 08-23 and 08-31[1]. So will there also be a similar test template and test results page for tracking the tests of translation and keyboard in anaconda?
