I think Peter Strickland may have paid the cash bond one
time and successfully recovered the money (or most of it) upon leaving Mexico.
I was not aware that there was an official requirement to
exit Mexico through the same border station that one entered
through. I certainly never paid attention to that and never had a
problem, even as recently as a couple of years ago. Never heard of
anyone having that problem. It seems especially unnecessary now that
they have all of the border stations linked by computer and can
easily cross check permits issued elsewhere. I couldn't find the
Spanish equivalent of the page Bill referenced but I did find a
Spanish FAQ, and it simply said that you have to cancel the permit at
one of the border stations rather than online. There was no mention
that it had to be the same one where you entered. That page was on
the Banjercito site (which actually processes the vehicle permits)
rather than the consular
one:
http://www.banjercito.com.mx/site/siteBanjer/Bicentenario/iitv/con_preg_frec.html.
It's ridiculous that there is still a $50 limit on other
items besides luggage that one may take into Mexico. That must not
have been updated for at least 20 years. These days you couldn't
take hardly anything, like an iPod, cell phone, GPS or nearly any
piece of caving gear without going over the limit. Of course I've
never seen that enforced either. They occasionally balk when they
see large amounts of new gear for expeditions, but even then a bit of
talk and maybe a brochure paves the way.
Interesting to see the requirement for anyone under 18
travelling without parents needing a notarized permission letter. I
had to have one of those on my first caving trip to Mexico back in
1968 when I was 17.

Mark Minton

At 03:26 PM 6/12/2011, Mixon Bill wrote:

I'm not sure that the alleged recent rule about deposits on cars taken
into Mexico is anything new. The purpose of using a credit card to pay
for the car permit has always been to allow the Mexican government to
charge to it a fee if the car is left in Mexico. A cash bond was only
required if you didn't have a recognized credit card. I don't know
whether that actually ever happened. The rule apparently also is that
you have to turn in your vehicle papers and leave the country at the
same point you entered it, but I've never heard of that being
enforced. See

http://portal.sre.gob.mx/was_eng/index.php?option=displaypageItemid=62op=pageSubMenu

Of course, whether the Mexican Embassy knows what it's talking about
may be dubious.

This is your opportunity to make your opinion on WNS and federal cave closures

Subcommittee on Fish, Wildlife, and Insular Affairs.

Please spread this email as far and wide as you can. Talk about it in your

Peter ASAP, so he can add your insight to the information he is amassing.

Peter Youngbaer, NSS WNS Liaison has been asked to testify and let Congress
know the cavers' viewpoint at the end of June. Mr. Youngbaer is also with the
Northeast Cave Conservancy, the cave conservancy which covers upper New York

Congress know, in no uncertain terms, what we think of federal WNS

some usable data and opinion to support the cavers' case that cave closure

I am really fond of my Sten light. It is not cheap but it is dependable,
robust, and fairly water resistant.

In answer to Malory’s original question, I used to use a Duo and it worked well
for me. I highly recommend the LED version. For casual caving, it will work
just fine.

2011-06-13 Thread Herman Miller
I started caving with a Petzl Duo 8 and a Duo 14 in that order. The lights
held up fine but I would not get one with a remote battery pack
http://www.petzl.com/us/outdoor/duo-series-0/duobelt-led-5 , when I had
just started caving having that extra length of cord was a pain and led to
the eventual destruction of the original electrical connections. The Duo 14
was my primary before upgrading to the STEN and I would still recommend it.

Re: [Texascavers] Headlamp question

2011-06-13 Thread Josh Rubinstein
Allan,

I like my Sten Light too. It is not NOT a good waterproof light. The
battery contains circuitry. The plug connection between the battery and the
light is a portal for water. Not a good combination. The risk can be lessen
by coating the connection with dielectric grease.

The light I use for exploring water caves is no longer available. Speleo
Technic FX2 was the brightest, least bulky and most robust light of its
day. Now the incandescent light powered by a NiCd battery on a belt is
still one of the most robust. Mine is a twenty plus years old. If I have
not killed, it is not for lack of trying. I have surveyed with the head
piece half filled with water with no ill effect. But in this era of retina
burning lasers, it is no longer the bright light.

RE: [Texascavers] Headlamp question

2011-06-13 Thread Stefan Creaser
I second the durability of FX-2's; I've had mine for more than 15yrs and it's
still going strong. It's outlasted numerous helmet mounted lights, though it is
more robustly made (for caving).

Looks like you can still get old ones:

Allan,

I like my Sten Light too. It is not NOT a good waterproof light. The battery
contains circuitry. The plug connection between the battery and the light is a
portal for water. Not a good combination. The risk can be lessen by coating
the connection with dielectric grease.

The light I use for exploring water caves is no longer available. Speleo
Technic FX2 was the brightest, least bulky and most robust light of its day.
Now the incandescent light powered by a NiCd battery on a belt is still one of
the most robust. Mine is a twenty plus years old. If I have not killed, it is
not for lack of trying. I have surveyed with the head piece half filled with
water with no ill effect. But in this era of retina burning lasers, it is no
longer the bright light.

RE: [Texascavers] Headlamp question

2011-06-13 Thread Mark Minton
Whatever kind of light you get, you'll definitely want to go
with LEDs. Incandescent just can't compete when it comes to
brightness and battery life. And for batteries, you can't beat
lithium ion. They are small, lightweight, long-lasting, very
reliable and much cheaper in the long run over disposable types. I
dislike waist-mounted battery packs with their respective cords, but
with lithium ion you can easily mount the battery on the helmet.
For my money, the Sten Light is the best available for
general caving. It is not a diving light, but it is definitely
waterproof enough to use on any normal trip, even in a wet cave like
Honey Creek. According to their web site it is waterproof to 8
meters, which is enough for anything most cavers will
encounter. I've worn mine on free dives a couple of meters deep with
no problem. The cord connector, while definitely not watertight, has
never been a problem for me. They're not cheap, but a very
worthwhile investment. They also have excellent customer service and
will usually repair any problem short of actual abuse for free.

2011-06-13 Thread Karen Perry
For those interested, we had to evacuate Carlsbad Caverns National Park due to
fire incroaching on the vistor center. The rangers where great, had everyone
out of the cave in 1 hour. The fire seems to have started along the scenic loop
road and is now in Rattlesnake Lechuguilla Canyons and may have or is
expected to jump into Walnut Canyon. When I was leaving I could see the Flames
coming up the gully about 50 yards from the main road just before the loop road
turn-off. Tonight I can see the flames from my backyard, in town!

Please pray we get some rain! This will be the 6th major fire in the Guads
since the end of April. And to top it all off, y'all have our bats! We are only
seeing about 200 each night when it should be 250 to 350 THOUSAND!

You could always search around the Lost Petzl Cave System for Melanie
Alspaugh's lost Duo. It's been there for a few years, so it might need new
O-rings. ;-)

Re: [Texascavers] Headlamp question

2011-06-13 Thread Herman Miller
I started caving with a Petzl Duo 8 and a Duo 14 in that order. The lights
held up fine but I would not get one with a remote battery pack
http://www.petzl.com/us/outdoor/duo-series-0/duobelt-led-5 , when I had
just started caving having that extra length of cord was a pain and led to
the eventual destruction of the original electrical connections. The Duo 14
was my primary before upgrading to the STEN and I would still recommend it.

But in this era of retina
burning lasers, it is no longer the bright light.

more robustly made (for caving).

Please spread this email as far and wide as you can. Talk about it in your

Peter Youngbaer, NSS WNS Liaison has been asked to testify and let Congress
know the cavers' viewpoint at the end of June. Mr. Youngbaer is also with the
Northeast Cave Conservancy, the cave conservancy which covers upper New York

I am really fond of my Sten light. It is not cheap but it is dependable,
robust, and fairly water resistant.

In answer to Malory’s original question, I used to use a Duo and it worked well
for me. I highly recommend the LED version. For casual caving, it will work
just fine.

I second the durability of FX-2's; I've had mine for more than 15yrs and it's

more robustly made (for caving).

Looks like you can still get old ones:

I second the durability of FX-2's; I've had mine for more than 15yrs
and it's still going strong. It's outlasted numerous helmet mounted
lights, though it is more robustly made (for caving).

Looks like you can still get old ones:

Allan,

I like my Sten Light too. It is not NOT a good waterproof
light. The battery contains circuitry. The plug connection between
the battery and the light is a portal for water. Not a good
combination. The risk can be lessen by coating the connection with
dielectric grease.

The light I use for exploring water caves is no longer available.
Speleo Technic FX2 was the brightest, least bulky and most robust
light of its day. Now the incandescent light powered by a NiCd
battery on a belt is still one of the most robust. Mine is a twenty
plus years old. If I have not killed, it is not for lack of
trying. I have surveyed with the head piece half filled with water
with no ill effect. But in this era of retina burning lasers, it is
no longer the bright light.

In answer to Malory's original question, I used to use a Duo and it
worked well for me. I highly recommend the LED version. For casual
caving, it will work just fine.

I'm kind of curious as well about the best waterproof headlamp for
the money out there. For what I used them for these days, the cheap
ones work fine. But for caving I would want a much tougher light.

Hello Cavers!

I am toying with the idea of purchasing a new headlamp and wanted
some opinions--is anyone using the Petzl Duo? If so, how do you like
it? For the money, is there something else you would recommend?
