I am not for or against but I just feel the changing environment around the hot
tub is a sign of a changing demographic of the "Texas Caver.". I noticed a few
years ago the "Aggie explosion" that began a changing of the guards if you
would. While the ASS represents a growing percentage of Texas cavers, they
also represent a group of cavers that are both casual and transient. I feel
the large influx has eroded some of the tradition that being a Texas Caver
represents. For the casual Caver they may never know what it's like to come
out of a cave soaking wet on new years day with your only care being to get out
of your wet muddy clothes and to get warm or to get to the one point in your
cave trip where you have to cross that near sump where it would be completely
pointless to get everything wet.

I think we should welcome every caver with open armswell not the best words

that of the Texas Caver!!!

[Texascavers] Thanks for the hot tub

I'd like to say a BIG thanks to Pete for the hot tub and sauna.
I helped a little this year and realize just how much work it is to set up and
tear down the whole thing
And where the cooks have a base group with others coming and going over the
years, Pete does the whole thing year after year!

Again, Thanks Pete

Just checking in to see if there is any new info as to services for Rod and to
thank whoever set up the memorial for him at TCR.
It was very thoughtful, beautiful, touching, and well done.
He would be most pleased.

Thanks,

I hope some pictures were taken of the tent memorial because I missed it
completely, and Rod was an old, old friend.

It was posted on CaveTex about a week ago. Services will be (or maybe WERE by
now) held in Memphis, TN, where his family is.

I agree, it was a nice memorial at TCR. Thanks to Paul and Katherine and
whomever else was involved.

Soon after I started caving, I became interested in reading AMCS
newsletters. But it was
not easy for me to get my hands on an issue.I usually had to buy
one once a year at TCR,
in order to get the privilege to read it.But I was a college
student on a very tight budget. So,
it took me several years to get caught up on all the speleo-history of
the AMCS.

Today's new cavers don't realize how lucky they are.

Many issues are view-able online as PDF's, and can be saved on your
iPad, or e-Reader.

The one below mentions Richard M. Smith ( as a staff member of the
newsletter )

http://digital.lib.usf.edu:8080/fedora/get/usfldc:A30-9/DOCUMENT_PDF

Here is another:

 http://www.cave-exploration.com/papers/Yaxchen-AMCS.pdf

It looks like quite a few of them are view-able from the KarstPortal
site:

http://www.karstportal.org/FileStorage/Assn_Mex_Cave/1975-v001-January.p

I look forward to the day, when I have a portable gadget where I can
easily manage
and retrieve all the cool caving information that has saturated the
internet.A creative caver
could sell a caver-modified iPad at the next NSS Convention that is
pre-loaded with
Speleo-Bloatware.That would be so awesome. How much extra would
you pay
for an iPad 2, that had built-in apps just for cavers ? And how
would it be different from a
stock model ? ( e-mail me privately and I will share the comments
with others. )

Hi cavers & cave friends,

I would like to formally solicit talks for this year's Winter Technical
Presentations and Annual Meeting, on Saturday, January 28, 2012, all day. That
sounds like it's far away, but it is a mere 3.5 MONTHS!! Get your projects and
trips in gear so you have something to talk about. Email me with your name and
a title to get on the program. Please feel free to forward to anyone who might
be interested in attending or presenting.

This year's ARA WT will be in the ENRB Room 253/Catalina Room (that's upstairs
in the USGS/NWS building on the NE corner of 6th and Park: 520 N. Park Ave,
Tucson, AZ 85719).  Maps and directions will shortly be posted on the ARA
website.

Anyone and everyone is welcome to present a technical project, slideshow, trip
report, musical performance, etc.  Also, we will be electing new ARA board
members at the meeting, so show up if you want a say in the Arizona region's
cave happenings.

Finally, I am taking suggestions for a keynote speaker - ideally someone from
around Arizona who might just be traveling through and want to give a talk.
Contact me if you have any cool ideas.

That's all from me for now.  Let me know if you have any questions, concerns,
or comments. And send me those talk titles!!

Cheers,
Sarah

There were a few people who paid their registration fee while (essentially)
standing in line. There were no wrist bands available at the time so a few
people may have appeared to not have paid but I don't think there was anyone
in line who didn't pay.

drafting new maps, extremely useful and informative. In addition, it was a

I happened upon the tent/shrine while trying to find my way back to
camp, in the wee hours of the morning - quite a surreal and deeply
moving experience.
My heartfelt appreciation also to those who put it together.
It meant a lot to me to have a way to say "goodbye".

WERE by now) held in Memphis, TN, where his family is.

I agree, it was a nice memorial at TCR. Thanks to Paul and Katherine

It was very thoughtful, beautiful, touching, and well done.

He would be most pleased.

[Texascavers] a cool caver-type project

2011-10-18 Thread Herman Miller
PpI am not for or against but I just feel the changing environment around
the hot tub is a sign of a changing demographic of the "Texas Caver.". I
noticed a few years ago the "Aggie explosion" that began a changing of the
guards if you would. While the ASS represents a growing percentage of Texas
cavers, they also represent a group of cavers that are both casual and
transient. I feel the large influx has eroded some of the tradition that
being a Texas Caver represents. For the casual Caver they may never know
what it's like to come out of a cave soaking wet on new years day with you

I think we should welcome every caver with open armswell not the best

[PBSS] Officer Elections

2011-10-18 Thread J. LaRue Thomas
Anyone who wants to vote for officers but does not plan to be at the
November meeting, please contact me. If you give me a good mailing address I
will, in exchange, send you a ballot.

If you are not current on your membership, there's still time to contact
Bill Bentley (treasurer for a while longer) and re-up. Then you can vote!

I will need to know by the end of the week as we need time to mail out and
mail back.

[PBSS] Deep Cave Thanksgiving weekend

2011-10-18 Thread J. LaRue Thomas

Caving alert!
Matthew has arranged for a trip to Deep Cave over the Thanksgiving weekend.
So far there is one trip leader (me) and groups are limited to 6 total (5
and the trip leader).

Is anyone interested? There are a couple of slots (maybe only one)
available, but speak up if you are interested as we have enough time to come
up with another trip leader.

Let me know if you're interested.
