At the Welder Wildlife Foundation headquarters (living quarters, lab and libraries, admin offices, etc) comprising an area of 5 or so acres they have a 4-foot high hog-wire perimeter fence with a 12 or 18 inch barrier of 1/2-inch hardware cloth (set into the soil a couple of inches) wired to to the bottom of the hog-wire around the entire perimeter. The hog-wire keeps the larger animals out of the compound and the 1/2-inch mesh keeps the majority of the rattle snakes out. Anyone who abuses their land or the plants and animals therein (lets add water, rocks, and caves too!) should have their land confiscated by big government and the land set aside in perpetuity as a park. [SWR] GCC dig - June 8-10
Cavers, This is a reminder that the next dig weekend at Grand Canyon Caverns is coming up on the weekend of June 8-10, 2012. We've got the Big House reserved, so there should be bunk space for everyone. If we run out of bunk space, there's also couch space and floor space (and the motel, and the campground). Bring your favorite implement of mass deconstruction. If you've got personal safety glasses, gloves, and earplugs: bring those too (don't worry, we have spares in case you don't have your own). I will be arriving sometime Friday in the late afternoon or early evening. We will work until Sunday morning, and be finished by lunchtime Sunday so everyone has a chance to get home in a timely fashion. The cafeteria is going to be open so we can eat there, but there's also a full kitchen and refrigerator in the house. We can cook food at the house, eat at the cafeteria, or head into Seligman for dinner at Westside Lilo's (pie!). Grand Canyon Caverns is a privately owned tourist cave just off of historic Route 66, about 20 miles NW of Seligman, Arizona. Access to the dig is by elevator, concrete pathway, and finally down a 100' rubble slope. We have electricity at the dig face. We've been working this project for almost 7 years, and have an excellent relationship with the cave's owners. If you're interested in coming out for a good time busting up rocks underground, please let me know. If you're planning to attend, or if you have any questions, shoot me an email at rbohm...@cox.net. Feel free to spread the word. See you underground, -Rich ___ SWR mailing list s...@caver.net http://caver.net/mailman/listinfo/swr_caver.net

We still remove turtles to the relative safety of our highway rights of way. Too many uninformed individuals condemn all snakes due to the lack of public education such as that afforded by BCI for bats. If harmful snakes invade your immediate territory remove them to a distant similar habitat. I consider myself an environmentalist but not so extreme as to place all creatures needs above that of man. There is always a way to satisfy both goals. While I like to see rattlesnakes protected, they should not be placed on the endangered species list unless there is solid evidence that they are in danger of becoming extinct. There is already too much government intervention in our daily lives. I have never been in favor of the Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup and other such events even if it did put them on the map for tourists. This is money the town could do without. VIVA LA RATTLESNAKE! Fritz -- Well, I WILL admit that any rattlesnake who ventures onto MY yard IS endangered! We have an understanding. THEY stay in the wild and do NOT come in MY territory and I will leave them alone. Otherwise, they will go to the great snake heaven in the sky. Jackie Feds Considering Adding Rattlesnakes to ‘Endangered Species List’ to Deny Land Rightshttp://visiontoamerica.org/9869/feds-considering-adding-rattlesnakes-to-endangered-species-list-to-deny-land-rights/ Environmental groups have convinced the federal government to propose listing the poisonous eastern diamondback rattlesnake as an endangered species in order to protect the reptile from “human persecution.” “Survival of these snakes in large part depends on whether people continue to persecute them or instead choose to allow

I wouldn't think a wildlife foundation would find any variety of snakes to be undesirable but I do understand the human safety factor. The hog-wire keeps the larger animals out of the compound and the 1/2-inch mesh keeps the majority of the rattle snakes out. Desirable snakes and other beasts are permitted inside the compound. --Ediger On Wed, May 23, 2012 at 2:13 PM, wesley s mudmal...@hotmail.commailto:mudmal...@hotmail.com wrote: We have deterrents in place like chickens and a cat but they still come into our territory. Tastes like stringy fish that had been eating rats. I've skinned, gutted, defleshed, and skeletonized about a hundred of them and they are not the most appetizing snake for food. Fresh boa or python looks and smells pretty good and the boneless backstraps are huge. Still, the eats rats thing. .
