My name is Ross Burns, and several people on Facebook suggested that I post
this question to your group. It concerns spelunking in the Austin area in the
period of 1953-54.

I am a fan of the old Pogo comic strips by Walt Kelly. He frequently mentions
real people. events, and groups in the strip. I have been reading a recent
re-issue of the strips for 1955 and 1956. In a storyline he published
beginning in January of 1955, he repeatedly mentions the University of Texas
Spelunking Team. Partly I know that he loved to play with words including
spelunking. However the repeated mention of UT and Texas over 2 or 3 months,
makes me wonder if there was a particular event that he was referring to. Some
of the characters are trying to reach the team to help rescue a frog that was
swallowed by Albert the alligator. So, it may have been some sort of rescue or
similar event.

Since Kelly wrote the strips well ahead of publication date, he probably
started this storyline in November or December of 1954.

I would appreciate any information that you might be able to shed on this
mystery.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Andy as far as I know Carl Kunath has the negatives with the bill Helmer took
Carl wanted me to scan them he said he only had about 100 negatives but when I
sign for me they must’ve been for 500 and I just wouldn’t do it so I sent him
back to Carl he had some pretty good images some of them were really bad the
scan those negatives would’ve taken me months and I have the equipment and the
knowledge but I just didn’t want to spend that much time as far as I know Carl
still has the negatives

Dear Friends of Honey Creek,

Last week a few people received notices that Silesia had applied for a new
Texas Land Application Permit (TLAP) for Honey Creek Ranch. You can read the
notice
here.
You can see the Affected Landowner Map
here
 and the Groundwater Quality Report
here.
 You can see more information
here
under "Honey Creek Waste Water Permit".

This means that the clock starts over as this is an application for a new
permit. We all need to respond with comments and request a public meeting for
Proposed Permit # WQ0015835001

You may also request a contested case hearing. To do so, you must include your
name, address, applicants name (Silesia Properties LP) and Proposed Permit #
WQ0015835001, the location and distance of your property/activities relative to
the proposed facility, a specific description of how you would be adversely
affected by the facility in a way not common to the general public, a list of
all disputed issues of the fact that you submit during the comment period, and
the statement "I request a contested case hearing".

If a contested case hearing is granted, the subject of the hearing will be
limited to disputed issues of fact or mixed questions of fact and law related
to relevant and material water quality concerns submitted during the comment
period. So, make sure that all your concerns are stated in this communication.

You may submit your comments
on-line

by entering WQ0015835. Or you can mail comments to TCEQ Office of the Chief
Clerk, MC-105, PO Box 13087, Austin, Texas 78711-3087.

TCEQ will hold a public meeting if the Executive Director determines that there
is a significant degree of public interest in the application or if the
requested by a local legislator. Requests to Representative
Beidermann,
 Senator
Campbell,
 and Comal County
Commissioners
asking them to contact TCEQ to request a public meeting would be helpful.

We had a great meeting at the Mammen Public Library on December 4th. In
addition to the new permit, we discussed reports that bull dozers began
clearing on the site, in violation of the City of Bulverde's Tree ordinance.

* Fundraising: To date $23,555 has been raised assuming we meet the $15,000
match. We still need to raise $7,455 to secure the full match.

Brie Jameson and Joyce Moore will work on fundraiser at Honey Creek Cave. This
would be a high dollar ticket event. (Thank you, Joyce and Brie!)

Julie Whittaker: reported on bids for SAVE HONEY CREEK signs and Facebook info

Julie Whittaker: reported on bids for SAVE HONEY CREEK signs and Facebook info
with block font in med blue.

Lone Star Reprographics: 4'x8' fence signs in Coroplast. $112 each, 50 Yard

Ladies and Gents, the Texas Cavers Reunion is almost upon us, 10-13 October.
As for the past four years, we will once again be at Paradise Canyon Campground
near Rio Medina, just west of San Antonio. They have a great web site with
directions and a map if you need one. The price is the same also, only $30 for
adults. This gets you camping, the Big Feed, contests, hot tub and sauna,
vendors, mud wrestling, wine tasting, bands, a Parade (“Under the Sea” theme —
wear costumes and bring a float!), beer, socializing, door prizes, reminiscing
over lost companions, and other aspects of the biggest Texas caving party each
year! There is no cell phone service in the canyon, so we can’t process credit
or debit card payments. Bring cash or checks! Ice will be available at
Registration, and hot showers are also available, but you’ll need quarters for
that. We still need some volunteers to help set up and tear down various things
over the weekend, so if you have some free time, consider helping out. And
don’t forget to say “thanks” to those who help put on this fabulous production.
See you there a week from Thursday!

*Don Broussard*

August 17, 1948 – May 16?, 2019

Famous caver, Don Broussard, from the Austin, Texas area, passed away
probably on Thursday, May 16. His close friend, David Honea, had visited
Don May 6-10, and they usually spoke on the phone on Sundays, but David
could not reach Don on May 19. Nancy Weaver was asked to check on him, and
she found him deceased in his home between Wimberley and Driftwood, Texas.
The cause is not known at this time. Don was diabetic, but he was in good
health lately.

Don was an active caver who went on many hard caving trips from about 1967
through the 1990s. He continued to be part of the support crew for major
expeditions to Huautla and other destinations until recently. Don was
always cheerful and helpful. His trademark was to walk up and say “Good
morning!” even if it was late at night. Everyone noticed how unassuming,
modest, and quiet he was. His good friend, John Fish, said, “Don was a
faithful helper, a faithful friend.”

Don and David Honea were friends in Houston schools from 1st through 12th
grade. Don went to the University of Arkansas, where he started caving,
then to the University of Texas, where he joined the UT Grotto caving club.
He, David, and Bill Elliott were caver pals and roommates in 1968-1969. In
the summer of 1969 Don worked with Bill Elliott and Jim McIntire in the
Sierra de El Abra, mapping and making cavefish collections in many caves
for Robert W. Mitchell’s cavefish research. After that he worked for John
Fish from 1971-1973 in the El Abra as part of John’s dissertation work on
hydrogeology. Most of Don’s work in the El Abra is documented in AMCS
Bulletin 14 by John Fish, Karst Hydrology of the Sierra de El Abra, Mexico
(2004) and AMCS Bulletin 26 by Bill Elliott, The Astyanax Caves of Mexico
(2018). Don was declared the “King of the El Abra” because he went in more
caves for science and mapping than anyone else. Friends presented him with
a free copy of the cavefish bulletin in 2018 and had a lunch in his honor.

Peter Sprouse said, “The passing of the first generation of AMCS cavers,
those who were active in the 1960s, continues with the loss of Don
Broussard. Don was very involved in the exploration of the Sierra de El
Abra and Aquismón in San Luis Potosí in his early caving years. In the
1980s Don led efforts to explore and survey the Crevice in the deepest part
of Sótano de las Golondrinas. Has was also active in explorations in the
Huautla area of Oaxaca and the Purificación karst of Tamaulipas. ¡Vaya con
Oztotl, Don!”

John Fish remembers the time when he and Don returned to Ciudad Valles
after a crawlway trip in Sótano de la Tinaja. They emerged covered in mud.
When they returned to their rented room Don walked straight to the concrete
shower stall and proceeded to wash down his muddy clothes before stripping
and scrubbing himself down to the skin. That way he got all the mud off in
one session.

Bill Elliott is working on an index to Don’s name in all of the AMCS
newsletters and maps he participated in. His name was on 47 maps in San
Luis Potosi and Tamaulipas alone. Don was involved with mapping Sótano del
Venadito, Tamps., from 1969 to 1998. He led the re-survey of the cave from
1989-1998, the longest project in the Sierra de El Abra.

News, and the AMCS publications he produced, my contact with him was of the
literary nature. The massive amount of work he did for the TSA, AMCS, the TSS
and almost every other literary phase of caving seemed almost humanly
impossible for one person to accomplish. The editing and binding of the AMCS
Activities Newsletter made this into a world class publication. He will be and
is missed. One of the last things he did was to make his home available to the
TSS as the new home of the TSS Library. The TSS Library now has a permanent
home for the TSS Publications, Texas Caver, and maps which will protect those
materials well into the future for next generations of cavers. Thank you very
much Bill for all you did to enhance and preserve the literary history of Texas
and Mexico.

Since William Russell discovered whirl pool cave not only discovered but dug

Jimmy Walker.

With heavy heart and a sense of considerable personal loss I report to you that
Texas has lost one of the pioneer
members of its caving community. Jimmy Walker passed away October 12, 2017 age
90 after a short final illness. It
was my honor to be counted as one of his friends.

Many of you may now be confused and asking "who?" Take a look at page 33 in 50
Years of Texas Caving to see
Jimmy in action. Also see page 25 for an iconic view of Devil's Sinkhole with
Jimmy holding aloft a safety flare.

<10-2001%20adjusted%20-%20Jimmy%20and%20Carol%20Walker%20(2)%20(Large)[3].jpg>

Jimmy's prime caving days were in the 1950s with others of the era such as Bob
Hudson, James Papadakis, Preston
McMichael, Bob and Bart Crisman, and the enigmatic Frank Nicholson. Jimmy's
caving exploits while substantial,
were but a small part of his life. He was a skillful writer. During his caving
career, he wrote several short stories that
were published in the "adventure" magazines of the time such as "I Fell Into
The Lost Cavern" that was set at Cascade
Caverns. A later book, Win, A Casino Survival Guide is much more than the
title would suggest.

Jimmy was an accomplished photographer and consummate painter. His paintings
were photo-realistic and he
trademarked the term "Absolute Realism."

Jimmy and his wife, Carol, were world famous collectors of pressing irons and
for several years they published Iron Talk,
a bi-monthly newsletter. In 2004, when their collection of 1,700 irons was
sold at auction, it took several days to disburse
the collection.

Jimmy had a professional career as a magician and partnered with Walter Blaney,
a sometimes caving companion. See
page 318 of 50 Years for a picture of them in the Lower Cave at Carlsbad
Caverns.

Jimmy was one of the early explorers at Caverns of Sonora and was with Preston
McMichael for the first explorations
of Deep Cave. Here is a photo of Jimmy and his wife, Carol, in the early days
at Caverns of Sonora.

This short memorial does not do justice to the incredible depth and
multi-faceted personality of Jimmy Walker.
Moreover, this is the kind of thing that should appear in a nice newsletter
such as the now moribund Texas Caver.
This bulletin board is a poor substitute.

We are diminished.

In Carl's message about digging open the lower entrance from inside Midnight

Carl's original version is in the chapter on Midnight Cave in his 50 Years of
Texas Caving pp. 458-467.
It is better than my synopsis below.

LowGun

The successful dig gave Carl Kunath, Ron Bridgemon, Chuck Pease, and Nick Lucas
a rare opportunity to play a devilish trick on the other two members of the
team. Jan and Orion Knox were at the back of the cave where they had pushed
through the tortuous Corkscrew into a significant unexplored section of the
cave.

The dig crew exited the new entrance, walked over to the pit entrance, and
pulled up the rope. They reentered through the lower entrance and met up with
Jan and Orion, who were not told of the discovery. Arriving at the bottom of
the pit entrance to find no rope, the conspirators feigned dismay and
consternation, but were disappointed at the calm reaction of Jan and Orion. A
brief quest for another way out surprised them with sunlight coming through the
new entrance.

I have decided to give blogging another try.My previous attempts failed
miserably to annoy anybody.

I am not sure how you find me on a blog, but I think the link below shows 10
post that I blogged over the last 4 years.

 https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6768672593579462012
Blogger

Below is an example of a post that I added to my blog I today.

http://david-locklear.blogspot.com/2017/06/mageia-6-release-candidate-may-2017.html

I should I have another blog out there somewhere on the web that I have not
used in years, from
before the blog above started.

The NSS Convention is just 19 days away. In order for me to attend that I
would want to leave
Houston by Thursday the 15th, or Friday the 16th. But knowing my past
attempts, I will probably
leave late, and arrive late.

I have some new drama this year that I did not have on my road-trip to Nevada
last summer. I ma
living in a motel, and it would be stupid to pay for a motel here in Houston,
during the days I am out
of town. While that would only be about $ 280 thrown away, it is still just
stupid. Moving out of the
motel, would be complicated as I have most of my stuff here just as I would in
a furnished apartment,
It would take a full-day to pack up and store all my stuff in storage. That
would just be inconvenient,
as I would have to repeat the process when coming back.Plus I do not want
to lose this particular
room as it is the best one in the motel. My next issue is 2 shyster
customers ripped me off and it
is starting to look like I am going to lose about $ 1,400.My next issue, is
my gas-guzzling Seqouia
needs lots of maintenance. If I were a betting person, I would bet that I
do not make it to the Howdy
Party this year. So realistically, I need to lower my expectations, and
just try to attend the Tuesday
festivities only and just get a Day Pass.

Re: [Texascavers] GPS Navigation gadgets

2017-05-30 Thread JAMES JASEK via Texascavers
I use an app in my iPhone called Topo Maps: It really is a fantastic app as you
can load in any Topo Maps of all of American and it is just part of the app.
Maps can be loaded as a small map, but I recommend using the full topo maps.
This way the map can be enlarged to see full detail.

The app was developed by Phil Endecott, a Brit, and he does some caving and is
an avid backpacker. He also replies to all emails. The app is fantastic and
very very complete and will allow you to record cave locations. When maps are
loaded in you can go from map to map seamless .

http://topomapsapp.com

There is more in this app than I can describe. Look hat the site I sent

Dear Ronald, My name is Mary Newcomb, daughter of William W. Newcomb, an
anthropology professor and Director of the Texas Memorial Museum for many
years. You may have heard that the College of Natural Sciences will cut
all funding - $620,000 – to the museum beginning next year. This is a
travesty that can not be tolerated! My husband and I have started a
grassroots effort called Save the Texas Memorial Museum. Our goal is to
gather many thousand signatures on a protest petition and deliver it to
Dean Hicke of the College of Natural Sciences on Jan. 15, 2014 – the 75th
anniversary of the museum’s opening. We have a Facebook page and a group

our first gathering, the details of which are on meetup.com. Or, we will
email you the petition which you can sign and mail back to us. Thank you

Re: [SWR] Tom Meador Award

2013-10-23 Thread James Jasek
Tom was pretty much the Historian for the TSA, and he had a massive collection
of memorabilia of caving, photography, postcards, literature of Texas and New
Mexico in his collection.

Collecting cave history was a passion for Tom. Since collecting an maintaing
caving history is our window to the past, I feel the Tom Meador Award should be
designed to encourage the collection of Texas caving history.

Tom was a personal friend and a really good fellow.

Yup! Agree. Solo requires planning and caution. It is unsafe but so is caving
with a group.

Re: [Texascavers] Solo Caving

2013-09-17 Thread James Jasek
It really goes without say anyone doing a solo trip make the necessary surface
precautions to come looking for you after a prescribed time period.

Even at time time the caver is to be out of the cave, it will be a fairly long
time before a rescue is started.

The trick is not have an accident. This sounds dumb, but think of the hundreds
of times we have gone caving without a single problem.

Solo is different? Only different in that one is alone. Every move, every step
I make is calculated in a slow deliberate manner. I never jump, watch my head
clearance, and pay attention where I am all the time in the cave. I never take
the slightest risk, but them again I cave this way even today.

Is solo safe? No!

Re: [Texascavers] Solo

2013-09-16 Thread James Jasek
Yes the thread has morphed into something else, but finally, after those who
condemned it, rightfully so, those cavers who have and are still doing solo
caving have contributed really good material.
Thank you.
Solo caving can be divided into three main parts. Those who seek out a cave to
explore on their own for whatever reason right or wrong. Then there is one
aspect of solo caving many cavers are involved in today: Route finding and
there are many risks. The last is solo vertical climbing deep drops to exit the
cave. It is solo, but others are coming up and can offer help of needed.

In ready the submitted solo trips, some solo on side a large cave is spur of
the moment rather than planned. Such as checking a lead and being gone from the
group for hours.

I am not here to judge right or wrong. My interest was to find out what other
cavers do while underground.

To me a lot of solo caving depends in how comfortable you are with the cave.
Good examples are Robber Baron and Amazing Maze. One caver is very comfortable
with Whirlpool Cave. There are other cave that qualify

Do I solo? Yes!

None of recommend others do solo caving as we all know it has many unknown risks

I thank everyone who sent in their experiences

Thank you. I raised you right. I was there when you crawled into this hell hole
of mud in tight breakdown in Kiwi. Your mom and me were helping with the dig.
When you came you told me not to go in there. You were covered in wet mud

Thanks. Cool account if the solo trip. Made me feel as if I was there. This is
more or less the type if cave I was asking about as to a easy cave to do a solo
trip.

Others have contributed solo trips I feel are well beyond what I was asking
about. Being alone in the water crawl is an easy place to scare you good due to
noises.

I have enjoyed the really interesting solo trips cavers have admitted to. At

Yes. Solo is risky to life thrusting but the point was to find out what others
have done. It has been very interesting

Thank you. It is starting to come out, about who has done and is doing solo.
Amazing Maze would make a good solo trip if one knows the cave. Easy to get
lost :)

A ten hour solo trip is a long one.

To me it depends on the cave. Horizontal and no vertical.

Also letting someone know as to your plans sort of goes without saying

Re: [Texascavers] Solo

2013-09-15 Thread James Jasek
Thank you for your solo caving experience. You are only the third person to
admit to actually doing a solo trip.

Sounds like it was a memorable experience :)

Most cavers seem to condemn solo caving, rightfully so, but I feel there is
more solo caving going on than cavers admit to.

I feel a solo trip has a lot to do with the cave and the desire to be
underground than a disregard for safety

Thank you

Jim

[Texascavers] Solo caving

2013-09-13 Thread James Jasek
Let me rephrase my solo caving question. I was hoping an active caver, who has
done, or has recently done, some non vertical, solo caving would reply. What is
the mind set and why go solo caving? What are the limits set to what
difficulty or degree of caving while underground? What is included in your cave
pack in case of an emergency?

[Texascavers] Solo Caving

2013-09-12 Thread James Jasek
What is the general feeling regarding solo caving? I am not talking about solo
climbing for exiting deep vertical cave. This is abut going in 500 to 1000 feet
crawling walking with some short down/ up climbs.

(Today's report. Justin and Guin and maybe others were watching and
have reported to me most of the following, minor parts of which I
remember.) Sometime after lunch we were gathered around several
leads at the bottom of a pit dig of a small city-owned cave in South
Austin which was being excavated for aquifer recharge purposes. The
discussion was over and I stood up to leave, had a momentary
blackout, and fell backwards into a 10 or so feet deep pit that was
one of the dig leads. I remember the very first part of the fall but
not much of it. I landed on my back amongst several large boulders
which had been dug out but not moved yet. I'm told that I was
unconscious for 15 seconds or so (who was counting?) and then began
speaking incoherently for, maybe, another minute. Troops were
dispatched to call 911 and I, apparently, got up and started heading
out the entrance which was 40 or 50-feet away via a sloping passage
big enough to stand up in--mostly. I remember none of it. The
ambulance (or fire truck) responders and I showed up at the entrance
about the same time. I was packaged and taken to St Davids South,
about a mile from my house. I remember one short segment in the
ambulance and then finally came back to reality in the emergency
room just as they were wheeling me off for a cat-scan. It showed 10
fractured ribs, some minor vertebra damage, and an intact skull
despite the nice lacerations yall have seen in Ellie's earlier post.
If I held still there was no noticeable pain but virtually any
movement resulted in big-time hurting the my left rib cage and left
shoulder. Strangely, I had no headache or other aches or pains. They
kept me in the hospital overnight so my condition would settle out.
My blood pressure was pretty high (I suspect adrenalin), all other
organs operating pretty much according to specs. I spent the night
sitting up, sleeping (mostly) due to a generous sleeping pill, and
took a walk in the hall with the PT girl who determined that I had
normal mobility--and pretty much everything else. Just remember that
the next time somebody says something about me around the campfire--
ha. The doctor made his afternoon rounds and, at my request, set me
free. Getting in and out of bed or chair required some caving
maneuvers and MUCH pain. I try to limit that. Every time I move I
try to make it a learning experience to see what hurts and what
doesn't. I have been sitting up on the side of the bed typing--
instead of sitting in the chair or leaned back in bed--and it seems
to be the most relaxing and painless approach although I'm going to
get tired of it at some point. I tried to roll over on my side but
couldn't do that painlessly and suspected I could be damaging some
of the tender rib fractures. Transitioning between sitting and
standing (mostly standing) induces pain in my lower-left-rear ribs
but mostly goes away after standing a half-minute. I have no spinal
pain best I can tell, just the cracked ribs whenever I try to move.
I've moved into the back living room because my usual bed is on a
loft about 5 feet up a set of stairs and my general access is easier
to obtain. Thanks to all who sent messages and smart-assed remarks.

Thank you for the accident report. Now you can join the small group of
cavers who have been involved in a caving accident.
