RE: [Texascavers] News report on threat to Bracken Bat Cave
Thanks for the interesting post, George. I do have one question, though, and I am NOT picking sides here: What's the difference between houses 800 to 900 yards away from the Bracken Cave entrance and bats living under the Congress Street Bridge in Austin, smack dab in the middle of downtown Austin? The Austin colony seems to be functioning fine and thriving, may I say, growing? And the buildings (read high rises) are much closer than 800 to 900 yards. Just playing dumb here, so please don't advocate having me drawn and quartered and left in a pile of guano! Inquiring minds just want to know. Your thoughts? Have you been smokin’ something, John, or it this an appropriate “story”, given today’s date? Just talked to ‘em and they laughed and said they wish. Got enough to wet the ground and the cave and the area above it are, fortunately/unfortunately, still dry as bone. Project is still on for this weekend. Gawd, let's hope not, Stefan! The move to a two way membership (cheaper for online TEXAS CAVER. Higher for mailed version), IMHO, probably saved the TSA and kept it solvent. The NSS needs to do this. I would have no problem with an online (cheaper) option. I read 'em once and then they go on the shelf. I'm not that attached to printed material. . Matt Turner said it’s silly to have so many cave organizations in Texas. Jim talked about old ways that the organizations were run, and how the current ones are doing better. LeeJay said it’s a responsibility of the leaders to build up their organization. Matt mentioned that there are a lot of “fun-time cavers” who want to cave, but not help with the organization. Agreed! Other than that, great job, y’all, and glad to see that the TSA is doing so well and in the black. (A HUGE hand to Michael for this, as well! At 7 lbs. 3 oz. and 19 inches long he should be pretty good at pushing leads; however, Jen is emphatic that it will be many years before he sees another 'birth canal'. [Texascavers] Reminder! - Longhorn Caverns Project Weekend- This Saturday, March 2nd!
This just an announcement to remind you about the next Longhorn Caverns Project weekend. We will meet at the parking lot up from the Visitor Center at around 9:30 this coming Saturday, March 2nd. The TPWD has graciously followed through and approved funds and is assigning work crews to begin some long overdue trail improvements to quite a few areas throughout the cave. Other funds for several other projects in the cave are to follow. In the meantime, we will be trying to stay out of the way and work on a few other projects, both in the cave and above the cave, and maybe even try to work in some ridge walking. If you'd like to volunteer, TPWD is requesting that you register as a volunteer at: http://ec.volunteernow.com/custom/1353/ http://ec.volunteernow.com/custom/1353/ All volunteers must apply, then select a location, easiest to plug in Longhorn's zip code, 78611. The new system works faster than the older paper system. (Don't freak out! It's not some One World Order/Black Helicopter/Fluoride in your water conspiracy!). It's not that big of a deal! It's just an easier way for them to track volunteer hours and for YOU to see what's available and needed at parks across the state. As a reward for helping out with this, the park is offering: · Free camping Friday and Saturday nights · Free use of The Basement for wild cave tours (the Crownover back entrance is still off limits). · A Free Vanishing Texas Bald Eagle Boat Cruise Sunday on beautiful Lake LBJ to observe bald eagles! · The usual gathering at Bluebonnet Café in Marble Falls Saturday night. Bring cash or a check, as they don't take credit or debit cards! If you have hand tools (large tarps, shovels, hand saws, limb loppers, chainsaws, wheelbarrows), please feel free to bring them. This is a truly fun and enjoyable project and we try hard to keep it that way and we guarantee a great weekend! If you have any kids interested in getting into caving, volunteer service, camping, and just hanging out with some cool folks, bring 'em along! Come out to a spectacular and historic cave and park, friendly park staff, and the always entertaining camaraderie of cavers! We'll even try to make sure we don't accidentally lock you in afterwards! J Hope to see you next month! Thanks! Mark

RE: [Texascavers] Beck Ranch Cave Closed
Thanks for the update, Mike. Could I make one other suggestion:? Please publish the names of past and future violators. A bit of public shame and humiliation may go a long way to getting the situation under control. (Plus, we'll know who to personally thank for the new set of restrictions!). Just my 1/50th of a dollar, Send me a SASE if you'd like a refund. We had cavers that went into the cave without permission and one group was detained by the Sheriff. Other caver related factors contributed to the closure. Since the closure, security efforts including a Home Owners Association Patrol, electronic and other security activities has been started. PLEASE DO NOT GO INTO BECK RANCH CAVE. If you are observed within the fence or in the cave YOU WILL BE ARRESTED. The Texas Cave Conservancy will host our TCC Winter Conference February 22-24 in the Cedar Park Texas area. We have caves there that you will be able to visit. The owner of Beck Ranch Cave is holding an event that same weekend and they will be out in the field. They know that we are hosting our event in Cedar Park and have asked the Sheriff to provide an extra patrol at the parking area and around the cave. It is painful to have to send this message out, however, I feel that I owe the Texas Caving community this notice- to give them a chance to decide if a trespass trip is worth the effort. Please spread word of this message to other cavers. Come on out and have fun at the TCC Winter Conference. Thank you for working with the Texas Cave Conservancy. [Texascavers] REMINDER - Longhorn Caverns Project Weekend- Saturday, February 2nd!
Well, with the Holidays and the failed Mayan Apocalypse behind us, what better way to kick off 2013 than a Longhorn Caverns Project weekend?! We will meet at the parking lot up from the Visitor Center at around 9:30 Saturday, February 2nd. If you can help out Friday night, please let me know. The TPWD has graciously followed through and approved funds and is assigning work crews to begin some long overdue trail improvements to quite a few areas throughout the cave. Other funds for several other projects in the cave are to follow. In the meantime, we will be trying to stay out of the way and work on a few other projects, both in the cave and above the cave. One of these we will have to perform after hours on Saturday night (after going into town to dine at the Bluebonnet Café!) and, if there's enough interest, I'd like to do this on Friday night, as well. If you have hand tools (shovels, hand saws, limb loppers, chainsaws, wheelbarrows), please feel free to bring them. Finally, the TPWD and the folks at Longhorn are requiring volunteers to register before coming out. (Don't freak out! It's not some One World Order/Black Helicopter/Fluoride in your water/Birth certificate type of conspiracy!). It's not that big of a deal! It's just an easier way for them to track volunteer hours and for YOU to see what's available and needed at parks across the state. Please go to http://ec.volunteernow.com/custom/1353/ http://ec.volunteernow.com/custom/1353/ to sign up. All volunteers must apply, then select a location, easiest to plug in Longhorn's zip code, 78611. The new system works faster than the older paper. Hope to see the old hands back at the project this month, as well as any new faces interested in helping out. Hope to see you next weekend! Thanks! Mark

[Texascavers] Longhorn Caverns Project Weekend- Saturday, February 2nd!
If you have hand tools (shovels, hand saws, limb loppers, chainsaws, wheelbarrows), please feel free to bring them. Hope to see the old hands back at the project this month, as well as any new faces interested in helping out. Hope to see you next month! Thanks! Mark

Kyle brings up a good point and one that I neglected to mention. TPWD and the folks at Longhorn are requiring volunteers to register before coming out. (Don't freak out! It's not some One World Order/Black Helicopter/Fluoride in your water conspiracy!). It's not that big of a deal! It's just an easier way for them to track volunteer hours and for YOU to see what's available and needed at parks across the state. Thanks for the heads up, Kyle! RE: [Texascavers] Crystal Skull Lawsuit
Disney and LucasFilms should also be sued for making a terrible movie, as well. As much as I wanted another Indiana Jones movie, uh, Steve? Should have stopped at 3, buddy! Mark From: dirt...@comcast.net [mailto:dirt...@comcast.net] Sent: Saturday, December 08, 2012 1:32 PM To: Cave Texas Subject: [Texascavers] Crystal Skull Lawsuit A caver friend called this to my attention. Some of you know David and Eleanor Larson's XMET project in Belize. That project gets permission to visit and map caves in Belize from Dr. Jaime Awe, who filed this lawsuit about the Crystal Skulls DirtDoc On Wednesday, one of the most entertaining lawsuits of the year was filed in Illinois federal court. It comes from Dr. Jaime Awe, director of the Institute of Archeology of Belize. This real-life Indiana Jones is suing on behalf of the nation of Belize over the Crystal Skull artifact, popularized in the 2008 Steven Spielberg film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Awe is demanding the return of the Crystal Skull from a treasure-hunting family who allegedly stole it 88 years ago from Belize, and if that's not enough, the lawsuit targets Lucasfilm, its new owner the Walt Disney Co. and Paramount Pictures, which released the Crystal Skull film, for allegedly using a replica likeness of the Crystal Skull. Among the damages claimed are the illegal profits of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The movie grossed about $786 million worldwide. According to the lawsuit, the Crystal Skull is attributed to Mayan culture and is a hardstone carving from clear or milky quartz that resembles a human skull. It's believed to have magical or otherwise supernatural powers, and there are four known valuable Crystal Skulls in the world. Three are on public display at the British Museum in London, the Musee du Quai Branly in Paris and the Smithsonian in Washington. And the fourth? Awe, whose profile is listed here, says that a proclaimed adventurer named F.A. Mitchell-Hedges traveled to Belize in the early 1920s. His adopted daughter Anna Mitchell-Hedges is alleged to have first discovered a Crystal Skull under a collapsed altar while exploring temple ruins in Belize. She reportedly disclosed this in a documentary that aired on the Sci Fi Channel (now Syfy) in 2008. The skull is described as 5 inches high, 7 inches long and 5 inches wide. It was taken to the U.S in 1930, then travelled with the father to England and remained there until his death in 1959, after which it was kept by the daughter and later the daughter's husband in Indiana. The family is said to have made money exhibiting it. STORY: Steven Spielberg Proud of Fourth 'Indiana Jones' Movie Criticisms The 2008 film is noted as utilizing a replica that clearly resembles the Mitchell-Hedges Skull and specifically references it. On the other hand, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull says the artifact was found in Peru and was of unspecified Native American heritage. LucasFilm never sought, nor was given permission to utilize the Mitchell-Hedges Skull or its likeness in the Film, says the complaint. To date, Belize has not participated in any of the profits derived from the sale of the Film or the rights thereto. The plaintiff is suing the Mitchell-Hedges family for removing the Crystal Skull from the country and never returning it. In movies, an adventuresome archeologist might steal it back. In real life, they go to court. Just as provocatively, although arguably a tad late, is the claim that the exhibition of the skull in the Spielberg film is unlawful. The lawsuit filed by attorney Adam Tracy attempts to make this claim by saying that Belize has a right, title and interest in and to the Mitchell-Hedges Skull and its likeness, and that the film companies have participated in a civil conspiracy and tortiously interfered with its prospective economic advantage.

Two of the bugs were captured in the cabin and two were captured around the porch areas. Here is the email recently sent to me by Kristy Orsburn Murray a researcher at Baylor. We finally were able to develop and establish the PCR for testing the insects for Chagas. We ran the PCRs yesterday. I wanted to let you know that 3 of the 4 kissing bugs were positive, including the blood fed triatomine. It was still alive when we received it, and it had defecated in the Ziploc baggie. We are running a blood meal analysis on it to see if we can identify the source of the blood meal. If human, do you know who was in that cabin at the time of the collection? Perhaps we should test those of you who might be exposed to these insects. With such a high percentage positive, the risk for transmission of Chagas could be high. Most of them are not directly harmful to H. sapiens. Therefore, before anyone jumps to any conclusion, how specific is the PCR used by Baylor College of Medicine for Trypanosoma cruzi? Where PCR primers used for detection tested against other related protozoa? Have the primers withstood the test of clinical practice? Rafal Kedzierski DFW caver From: gschin...@edwardsaquifer.org To: texascavers@texascavers.com List-Post: texascavers@texascavers.com Date: Thu, 6 Dec 2012 14:18:40 -0600 Subject: [Texascavers] Results of testing for Chagas in Kissing bugs in Texas Folks, Back in June, I collected four kissing bugs from the Deep and Punkin preserve in Edwards County, Texas. This was in support of some research being conducted by the National School of Tropical Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine. We took the feces separate from the insect and also ran PCR, and the feces was positive. This was the insect that said it was found under a rug in one of the cabins. We are running a blood meal analysis on it to see if we can identify the source of the blood meal. If human, do you know who was in that cabin at the time of the collection? Perhaps we should test those of you who might be exposed to these insects. With such a high percentage positive, the risk for transmission of Chagas could be high. Let me know if you have any questions. We are happy to help. Best wishes Kristy I suspect that the results from the bugs collected at the Deep Cabin are not unique to south Texas and that many of these bugs are positive. I have five additional bugs from Bexar County that will be submitted for testing. Chagas is not a nice disease and I suspect that a number of cavers who have camped out in the hill country over the years have been exposed. Below are some links on Chagas information. It is a personal decision on whether you should get tested and where and how you sleep. I'm sure this will create some lively discussions. [Texascavers] Volunteers Needed for Girl Scout Winter Jam at CBSP, January 12th
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and, now, I need your help. For the last several years, cavers from around the state have participated with the folks at TPWD and GS leaders from the Austin and San Antonio area for their annual event at CBSP. I just wanted to let you know that we have been invited to again assist the Girl Scouts from the Austin and San Antonio area at Colorado Bend SP for their annual Girl Scout Extravaganza. They are needing our help to lead groups of girls on caving trips on Saturday, January 12th. They are usually split into three (or four groups) and we typically visit Dynamite Cave, Turtle Shell Cave, and Cicurrina (sp?) Cave and, possibly, Gorman Falls. A short cave talk at the Park office is usually given beforehand and the girls will be providing their own equipment. Female leaders are especially effective with the Scouts, as they seem to like and appreciate members of the fairer sex who aren't afraid to have fun and get dirty! I was planning on helping, as were the kids, as we have the last 6 or 7 ( 8?) years, but I found out my parents will be swinging through the DFW area to see us and, primarily, their two new great granddaughters that same weekend. If any of you could head up this endeavor, I would be very much indebted to you and the Conference Center available for GS caving volunteers' use. Please let me know if you can assist and I appreciate your past help and, I hope, participation in January. Thanks! Mark Alman

[Texascavers] Longhorn Caverns Project Weekend, November 2nd thru 4th!- POSTPONED TILL February 2013
Good morning, y'all! After discussions with folks at TPWD Friday, and a future meeting the week of November 5th on current and future projects and priority/scheduling, I have come to the conclusion that it would be best to hold off on the Longhorn Project till 2013. Complicating project dates, much to my delight, is the fact that our family is about to be blessed with the birth of two granddaughters and future cavers around the first of December and around the Christmas timeframe. (If you think I'm going to miss the birth of these two little cuties for a caving project, you're plumb loco!). Thanks for your current interest and past participation in this fun and productive project in 2012! TPWD and the folks at LCSP sincerely appreciate it! Give me a holler if you'd like more details. Thanks! Mark

(Cue the patriotic music and Texas and American flags waving in the background) During this highly politicized election year, I am pleased to announce the two candidates running for TSA Vice Chair and TSA Secretary. They are (drum roll please): Vice Chair: Roger Moore Secretary: Ryan Monjeras A sincere thank you to those who took the time to nominate someone and to those of you who took the time to think it over (at least a minute or two) before declining! Please be sure to attend the TSA business meeting at 8 AM and greet the dawn (Good morning, Crash!) and perform your civil duty by voting for these fine folks or, if you must cast a write in vote, you'll be free to do that, as well! Or you can send you write in votes to me and I will forward them to Don. Remember: In order to vote, either at TCR or by email, you MUST be a registered TSA member! Vote early and vote often! Finally, a humongous hats off to Ellie for serving the last few of years as Vice Chair and to Denise for her excellent service as TSA Secretary, all the time while attending nursing school! I am in awe of you two ladies and the TSA extends its thanks and appreciation for your years of hard work and dedication to making the TSA what it is. [Texascavers] Just a Few Days Remain! - Request for officers for 2013 - The TSA Wants YOU To Volunteer!
Thankfully, I have had a pretty good response to my last plea and we even have some candidates (!) for the open positions of TSA Secretary and TSA Vice Chair. Thanks to all of the cavers who have responded with nominations and those of you who thought it over AND declined or accepted their respective nomination! The TSA could not function without people like you willing to serve or, at least, think it over. I'm going to close nominations on Monday, October 8th, and will post the candidates soon after on CaveTex, after conferring with the TSA leadership. Meanwhile, if this sounds like something you'd like to do or you have someone in mind, shoot an email my way. I also know that there are PLENTY of people out there who like to tell the TSA officers how to do their jobs, how they are doing them wrong, how they could do them better, what is wrong with the TSA, or want to conduct change on an institutional scale. Now is YOUR time! If I don't hear from you, I'll assume everything in the TSA is hunky dory and the new TSA leadership will not be bothered by your criticisms and you will forever and evermore hold your peace. So, nominate that special someone or volunteer now and be sure to vote at TCR. Make your voice heard! Democracy is a terrible thing to waste. (cue the patriotic music and flag waving in the background about now). Mucho gracias! Mark Alman (Borrowing from one of Ron Ralph's excellent past emails from when he was the TSA Nominations Chair). Cavers: It is once again time to consider running for office. The Texas Speleological Association needs your hat in the ring for the 2013 election at the Texas Caver Reunion. The positions are for one year and duties are outlined below. Knowing your reluctance to volunteer for any position, I am asking your friends (ha!) to suggest to me that you will be a fine candidate. I will then contact you and ask if you will run and serve. Our present officers (2012) are: President - Don Arburn (standing, unless someone REALLY wants to run) Vice-President - Ellie Watson (OPEN. Ellie is standing down, after many years of superb service to the TSA). Secretary - Denise Prendergast (OPEN. Denise is standing down, after many years of excellent record keeping for the TSA). Treasurer - Michael Cicherski (standing, unless someone REALLY wants to run) This is the first call for nominations.
RE: [Texascavers] Beck Ranch Cave Update
Thanks for the update, Mike, and all you and the TCC do for Texas caves! It's a real shame when trespassers and cavers (who definitely should know better) flaunt the rules and policies governing access. I'd like to see a list of caves that we have lost access to, due to unauthorized access by cavers (whom once again, should have known better). River Styx and some after hours unauthorized trips in Carlsbad come to mind. Must be several more that slip my feeble memory. This is one of the few caves under TCC management that does not have a cave gate. The cave entrance was not gated in order for the bats to be able to enter and exit the cave. A high quality nine- foot tall iron fence was build to attempt to control access. Local teenagers were using it for a party cave. The fence allowed us to greatly reduce the party traffic so we could protect the cave. Today, locals continue to trespass and go into the cave. Texas cavers are going in without permission as well. Both the locals and the cavers have been confronted by law enforcement and issued citations for trespassing. In addition, the TCC has not been able to prevent the authorized caver groups from creating problems such as changing cloths in the parking lot of a public park. Cavers in their underwear, and less, have made it difficult to keep cave open. As a result, all authorized trips will be for cave management activities such as cave clean up, the bi-annual monitoring, fire ant control and inspection, etc. These trips will be set up by the Texas Cave Conservancy. We will host an annual cave clean up and restoration visit. The next clean up day will be Saturday -February 23, 2013. If you are interested in assisting us in conducting the cave management activities, send us your name in an e-mail to tcc-ca...@austin.rr.comWe will place you on the list and contact you prior to our work project. Further, the TCC would like to make it very clear to Texas cavers that steps have been taken to alert law enforcement when unauthorized visitation is taking place. The TCC now has to notify the cave owner prior to each authorized visit. A Neighborhood Watch system is in place to observe the cave. A house near the cave can easily observe people entering the cave and call for law enforcement. In addition, electronic monitoring should greatly increase the number of trespassers arrested. We have been notified that all unauthorized visitors that are detected will be arrested and charged with trespassing. This will include cavers. We want to thank all of the cavers that worked with us to protect the cave. Your work has made a difference. The TCC has done everything possible, short of these new actions, to prevent problems. I will be at the Texas Caver's Reunion in October if you would like to ask questions. Once again, Thank You for working with the Texas Cave Conservancy. [Texascavers] Resend - Hello!? - Request for officers for 2013 - The TSA Wants YOU To Volunteer!
Sorry. It's early! It should read that I've had ZERO response for TSA VICE CHAIR. The crickets are chirping so loudly that I thought I better re-announce this. It's been a week since I announced the beginning of the 2013 officer nomination process for the TSA. So far, I have had two people respond with their interest in serving as TSA Secretary. Thanks you so much (you know who you are)! That's the good news. The bad news is that we have had ZERO response for TSA Secretary. This is definitely very bad news, as we are on course for no TSA Convention this spring, unless someone steps up! Please consider this and volunteer. We need some new blood to step up! Received 9/11/2012 from a close friend. Time to really increase the prayer time. I am sending this to those of you I know that care about Israel and are prayer warriors. My brother and his family live in Jerusalem - he is a minister - and a former Navy SEAL - his office is close to one of Israel 's largest underground military bases. He called me last night which is very unusual - usually it is email. He called to tell me that he is sending his family back to the US immediately due to what he is seeing happen within the last week and what he is being told by his military contacts in both the Israel and US military. He said he is seeing with his own eyes military movements the likes of which he has never seen in his 20+ years in Israel . What he called a massive redeployment and protective tactics of forces is underway. Over the last two days he has seen anti-aircraft missile deployments throughout the Jerusalem area including 3 mobile units that he can see from his office windows. In addition, he has seen very large Israeli armored columns moving fast toward the Sinia where Egypt has now moved in Armor. There are reports of the top military leaders meeting with Israel 's Sr. Rabi which is something that has happened preceding every prior military campaign. His admonition is to watch carefully and pray for Israel and its people. He is convinced that barring something extraordinary Israel will attack Iran - with or without the US - and very soon. It is the belief in Israel that Obama does not stand with Israel but with the Arab countries. He has told me before that Israel will saber rattle from time to time but that this time is very different from what he is seeing and hearing. He was at the Wailing Wall 2 days ago and there were hundreds of IDF soldiers there. As he was leaving he passed at least 20 military buses full of soldiers in route to the wall. He has never seen this before either. Just thought I would pass this along. My brother is not an alarmist by any means. When he talks like this it gets my attention for sure and usually I find he knows more than he shares. There are reports that Israel is asking Obama to come to Israel immediately but they are being answered with silence. My opinion is that I see the making of the perfect storm.
